Grading:

Homework/Group work – 10% A: > 92%, A- : 90 – 92%

Quizzes – 15% B+: 88 – 89%, B: 83 – 87%, B- : 80 – 82%

F: < 58%

Homework/Group work: By doing homework problems you can only increase your grade.

Homework will be online through BVTLab. All due dates will be specified online and in class.

Sometimes I will ask you to solve problems in a group. The points that you will get for these

problems will go toward your homework/group work points.

Section Code for BVTLab: B50A87

Quizzes: There will be approximately 6 quizzes during the semester. All quizzes will be in

class. Some quizzes will be in groups. No quizzes will be dropped.

Exams: Exams will be based on recent homework/quiz with some variations. All work must be

shown to earn credit. Each exam will worth 100%. You will be allowed to use a scientific

calculator. You may not use a cell phone as a calculator. It is your responsibility to bring a

calculator for the test. Sharing a calculator with your neighbor is not recommended since it will

create a distraction in class. On the exams all work must be shown to earn credit. There are

absolutely no make-up exams unless if there is an emergency (illness, injury, death of

relative/friend, etc.). Your emergency must be verified via documentation. Statements such as

job, babysitting, vacation, the car is out of fuel, traffic, unspecified family emergency, etc., will

not be considered as explanations toward being excused for having a make-up exam.

Exam 1: February 13, Sections 1.5 – 4.1

Exam 2: March 15, Sections 4.2 – 6.5

Exam 3: April 24, Sections 7.1 – 9.4

Final Exam: The final exam will cover selected topics from all chapters that we will cover

during the semester. You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator. No cell phones will be

permitted. There is absolutely NO swapping time and dates for ANY exam including the final

exam for this class. Final exam will be in class and will last for 120 minutes.

FINAL EXAM is on Wednesday, May 17th, 8:00 – 10:00 am

If you will fail to take the final exam, a grade of “F” will be assigned for the course.

The final exam score may also be used to replace the lowest test score (a missed test does

not count).

Attendance: Regular class attendance and full participation are essential to success in this

course. If you miss a class, YOU are responsible for the material covered during that class. Keep

in mind it is the student’s responsibility to notify the records office when wishing to drop

the course. Consistently being late for the course may affect your course grade. You should

notify me before the class starts about leaving early or arriving late for the next class meeting.

Extra Credit: You may receive an extra 2% toward your overall score at the end of the

semester, if you never missed any more than two lectures for the semester.

Extra Help: The lab, Math 399, is an excellent source of help. During the lab hours you will

receive help with homework, as well as assistance toward exams. The other source of help at

CSUCI is the LRC at the library. You can get help at the STEM Center in El Dorado Hall. They

provide free tutoring services. If you need help outside of class or if it is necessary to miss class,

be sure to use this resource.

Office Hours: Please, remember to attend my office hours. I cannot help you if you will NOT

ask for help. Study groups during my office hours are always welcome!

Peer-Lead Team Learning This program consists of learning communities designed for

students who want to excel in class while simultaneously developing study and learning skills

that will be of use in all science and mathematics classes. A weekly 2-hour commitment is

required. For more information, visit

www.csuci.edu/projectacceso/student-support-services.htm

More about PLTL The philosophy and practice behind PLTL is that leaders are not "experts" (as tutors and

professors are expected to be), but that they're trained to bring out the best in a group in terms of

learning, developing self-sufficiency and effective study skills, etc. When it works, students

learn how to learn – frequently in study groups – and take that skill to their higher-level courses.

One long-term goal is that students become more independent in their learning and use

themselves, various materials, and their peers as resources without immediately concluding they

need the intervention of an expert.

In the Peer-Led Team Learning model, a student (the Peer Leader) organizes and oversees

weekly workshop sessions on topics recently covered. Peer Leaders receive training on course

content, group facilitation skills, and college success skills (note-taking, study habits, etc.). Peer

Leaders' responsibilities include attending training and providing advice, insight and support to

workshop participants. Workshops begin in the second or third week of the semester and go

through the 14th week of classes.

Students with Disabilities: Cal State Channel Islands is committed to equal educational

opportunities for qualified students with disabilities in compliance with Section 504 of the

Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. The

purpose of Disability Resource Program is to assist students with disabilities to realize their

academic and personal potential. Students with disabilities needing accommodation are required

to contact the Disability Program office at (805) 437-3331. All requests for accommodations

need appropriate advance notice by the student to avoid a delay in services. Please discuss

approved accommodations with faculty.

Cheating/Plagiarism: By placing your name on a paper, you certify that the work is yours.

During homework, quizzes or exams, copying, allowing copying, or having another person do

your work for you constitutes fraud and is prohibited by the law of the Educational Code. In

study groups ideas should be shared verbally. Avoid copying answers from tutors. If several

students do this, their papers, being identical, will appear to be plagiarized. I am responsible to

report instances of cheating to the Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs and for Student Affairs

or their designees and give a student a grade of “F” for this work. For more information on the

University policy, please see the University Catalog.

Change of Program Table: Please refer to this website regarding specific deadlines and forms

for changing the program or withdrawal from the course with or without a W on your transcript.
