HOLIDAY PET PRECAUTIONSAs you celebrate the season, it’s important to keep your companion animals safe and stress-free. Here are some helpful hints:1. Be careful with holiday decorations. Common yuletide plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy and holly berries can be poisonous, possibly even fatal. Tree adornments and candles can cause choking or severe intestinal problems if swallowed. Be sure to discard all bows, yarn and curling ribbons. 2. Crowds of people and holiday festivities can frighten animals. If you plan to entertain, plan ahead on your pets’ behalf. Make sure they have a safe haven where they can retreat.3. Pets are not garbage disposals for the holiday leftovers. Poultry bones can splinter and cause blockages, chocolates are poisonous and any sudden change of diet, even for just one meal, can give your dog or cat stomach pain or diarrhea.4. A Christmas tree should stand in a fl at, wide base. You might also want to anchor the tree – cats often see trees are fabulous climbing posts. You also might want to consider putting the tree in a room with doors that close. Tinsel and popcorn strands can be deadly to pets, and glass balls can shatter in an animal’s mouth.By taking proper precautions, you can help your pet enjoy the holiday season too. Merry Christmas!

Violet calls me Peaches (and my brother is Cream, of course). We came to the Haven together as kittens, were adopted by a nice lady in West Van in 1995, and returned to the Haven last year when she had to move and couldn’t take us with her. We’ll live here for the remainder of our lives. If you’d like to become one of our foster parents, we’d be thrilled!

A nervous girl on first introductions with people, Pepper can come off as quite confrontational with her bark. Pepper is looking for a strong and confident, dog-experienced leader to show her how to greet people of all varieties and would do well with a playful canine companion.
