For the freshman class, this semester's speech classes are more science-based. Our Anatomy and Physiology class presents itself as quite the challenge, as there are so many structures and functions to learn from each system. It is mind-boggling to think that in order for speech to be produced, countless structures and processes are necessary contributors. In Speech Science, we are learning the scientific aspects of speech, from physics to neurology. Though we are not required to complete any observation forms for this semester's speech classes, it is important for us to remember to keep up with out observation hours so that we meet the mandatory 25 hours for the program.

In the Eyes of a…

The sophomores are relieved to have finished their first Speech Science test with Dr. Pagotto and we could not be happier with our success on this test! In Language Disorders in Children, we just finished up looking at all different kinds hands-on standardized testing methods for children who would be tested for a language disorder. As for both our speech/language classes with Dr. Burrows, we are eagerly awaiting our midterms

We are now in full swing this semester! Our midterms are coming up soon! It seems like it will be no time before we are going to be in clinic. We have submitted our graduate school and graduate assistantship applications! We're continuing with presentations in Special Topics, writing research papers for Aural Rehab, and writing behavioral objectives in Clinical Methods. And we all continue to observe in the clinic in order to finish up our hours and for the Clinical Methods requirement. We are very, very busy!

As told by Charles Dickens, "It is the best of times and it is the worst of times." The first year grads are enjoying their classes and clinic, but are already feeling their time together dWENDELLing. Having quizzes twice a week (one in Adult Neurogenic Motor Speech and one in Research Methods) are keeping them happy. Artic and Phonology with Dr. Burrows rules and Fluency is going

First-Year Grad

After two months apart, the second year grads were excited to reunite and take our comprehensive exams, one of the last steps before graduation and earning the master’s degrees we’ve worked so hard for! It’s hard to believe that we are about halfway through the spring semester and that the end is near. Now that we’ve experienced both child and adult placements, many of us are starting to think about post-graduate life and what type of setting we think will be the best fit for us. We’re looking forward to seeing each other again for a cohort meeting at the end of March. Congratulations to those who passed the national exam and good luck to those who will be taking it in the coming weeks! Hope all is well! J

Morgan Leitold Where? Exmore, Virginia

What? We will be working with Habitat For Humanity. We will be working with our hands, possibly doing some reconstruction! Eye goggles and work gloves are a must!!!

Why? I chose this trip because it involves a similar service as the trip I attended last year. It's another habitat trip, but in a different place. I was looking for different, but familiar and I found that in this trip. I like helping others because I believe no one should have to go through hard times alone. We are all here and capable of making a difference in someone's life for the better. The grateful smiles on the faces of the people you are helping speak volumes.

What will you gain? I hope to gain a lot from my trip: I hope to learn about the people of Exmore and see first-hand what it is like to live there. I am excited to have the opportunity to share this powerful experience with my group members! I hope that they really take the time to reflect and grow from the experience of the trip.

Questions for some CSD students participating in Service Trips

Abby Nicolas Where? Exmore, Virginia

What? We will be working with Habitat For Humanity and building homes.

Why? I've always wanted a chance to work with Habitat for Humanity and to do a service trip outside of my home state. For service I've only ever done donations; to actively make something will allow my service to reach an entirely new level. I like helping others for the reward. I love putting smiles on people's faces from doing work I enjoy; it makes the effort worthwhile.

What will you gain? A sense for construction work, team building, and a challenge from experiencing an environment very different from what I'm used to.

Rachael Amarante Where? Two wonderful locations on either side of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala: San Lucas and Chichicastenango - we often shorten that last one to "Chichi" to give ourselves a little break.

What? This particular trip is all about cultural immersion and really spending time in and among the people. In San Lucas, we will be giving our time and talents to the lovely students of an all-girls' school and the surrounding community, additionally gaining a bit of experience by assisting with their English language classes - a truly fantastic opportunity! In Chichi, we will spend our time living in the community, interacting and working among the people. Whatever we are asked to participate in, we will offer our services. In past years, this has included coffee farming, local reforestation, and hauling rocks for the completion of a road.

Why? We as humans are not here for ourselves. Focusing on our own needs, in isolation, without any consideration of those around us, is fruitless. Such a life never leads to true happiness. There are individuals - families, communities, and entire countries - in need. Sometimes that need is material, while other needs are emotional. If I have learned anything through service, it is that the main need in humanity is a sense of companionship and belonging. Nothing is more fulfilling than the knowledge that, by simply existing amongst others, showing genuine care and interest in personal thoughts, needs, and desires, encouragement, and purpose, a sense of human dignity is reinforced. In a nutshell, I serve on the basis of compassion for and investment in the recognition of human dignity for all persons.

What will you gain? It's always ironic to realize that we as participants go to serve, and essentially give of ourselves to others, yet end up gaining experiences that affect us and give us thought-provoking, motivating memories that last a lifetime. I hope to gain an even deeper love for the various cultures of my brothers and sisters worldwide as I plunge into unknown territory. I hope to gain an appreciation for the good things that I am fortunate to have, and perhaps in the process, learn what I can and should truly do without. It could be the start of a process of lifestyle de-cluttering - learning what is truly important. I also hope to gain a deeper connection with myself, which tends to happen when I am in contact with new perspectives. It truly is an amazing, provocative, altering experience. I am beyond excited to step out of my comfort zone - everyone needs to challenge themselves once in a while to try something new!
