Marywood Simmentals is the legacy of more than two decades of intensive genetic development through a

breeding program designed to produce breeding bulls and replacement females. This tradition is carried for-

ward through the Marywood Co-operators. We strive to produce calves that mature early, are exceptionally

fertile, reach 700-lb at weaning, 1,400-lb at breeding and breed back within 60 days. This program allows us to

offer you bulls that are at the top of their class for adding more lean meat yield, calving ease and maternal

traits to your herd. We try to improve our numbers every year so that you can improve yours. We pride our-

selves on our bulls because of the positive influence they can have on your calf crop and your breeding pro-

gram!

Information we use to make good breeding decisions.

Marywood Co-operators are dedicated to producing the highest quality animals using every resource available to make

the best breeding decisions. We evaluate the genetic potential and future production capabilities of our animals using

production measures, genetic evaluations and good common sense. A genetic evaluation tool that works for all breeds of

cattle is the BIO Across Breed Calculations (ABCs). These ABC values are expressed as a percentile; this makes 100

the top of the class and 0 the bottom. ABCs are calculated using data collected from all breeds of cattle which makes

this a tool for comparing traits, such as calving ease (CE), within a breed, between breeds and in crossbred cattle as well.

For example a breed like Angus will have a higher ABC number for birth weight (BW) than a Simmental because on

average the physical weight of an Angus calf will be lighter. The best way to use these numbers on your herd is to

purchase animals with numbers that would complement your breeding goals. If you don’t know the numbers for your

herd, the table below shows the average BIO ABC rankings for all breeds as well as Angus, Charolais, and Simmentals

for reference. This table is here to show the norms between breeds and highlight how our bulls measure up compared to

the Simmental breed in general.

Understanding genetic evaluation (GE) terms.

Genetic Evaluation (GE) An animal’s observed performance for a trait is known as a phenotype. The

phenotype (or performance) is influenced by the environment the animal is subjected to or raised in, as well as

the genetic contribution of the animal’s parents (dam and sire).

Phenotype = Genotype + Environment

Across Breed Comparison Percentile (ABC%) BIO calculates percentile rankings for all traits. With

percentile rankings, 100 is the best possible rank. For an animal that ranks 95 for a trait, they are in the top 5%

for that trait across all breeds. With ABCs one breed can be compared to another, a purebred can be compared

to percentage cattle and percentage cattle can be compared, regardless of their breed composition.

Calving Ease (CE) Calving ease ABC is a prediction of the ease with which a bull’s calves are born. This

number represents the difference from the average percentage of unassisted births calculated across all beef

breeds. Average Simmental CE -1.6 with an ABC% ranking of 23, as of 2012.

Example: Bull A has a CE of +5% and Bull B has a CE of -0.5%. From this information we predict that 5% more of

the calves born from Bull A will be born unassisted than the average from all beef breeds. Bull B would have 0.5%

less unassisted births than average. Comparing the two bulls we predict that Bull A will have 5.5% more unassisted

births than Bull B.

Birth Weight (BW) Birth weight ABC is a prediction of the effect a bull will have on the birth weight of its

calves. This number represents the difference in the effect on birth weight in lbs from the average birth weight

that would be expected across all beef breeds. Average Simmental BW 1.8 with an ABC% ranking of 21, as of 2012.

Weaning Gain (WG) Weaning Gain ABC is a prediction of the ability of an animal’s calves to grow from

birth to weaning. This number represents the difference in gain from birth to weaning from the average

expected gain across all beef breeds. WG numbers are expressed in lbs of gain. Average Simmental WG 44.4 with an ABC% ranking of 79, as of 2012.

Example: Bull A has a WG ABC of -1.0 and Bull B has a WG EPD of +3.5. We predict that Bull A will have calves that gain 1

lbs less from birth to weaning than we expect across all beef breeds. Bull B will have calves that gain 3.5 bs more than we expect

on average. Compared to each other, Bull B will produce calves that gain 4.5 lbs more than those of Bull A.

Milk Milk ABC indicates the ability of an animal’s daughters to provide their calves with milk and mothering

ability as measured by heavier calves than expected on average across breeds. This number is expressed in lbs. Average Simmental Milk 27.1 with a ABC% ranking of 83, as of 2012.

Yearling Gain (YG) Yearling gain ABC expected progeny differences (EPDs) are a prediction of an animal’s

calves ability to grow from birth to yearling. This number represents the difference in gain in lbs of calves off

of this animal as compared to the average gain that would be expected from calves across all breeds.

Average Simmental YG 75.3 with an ABC% ranking of 70, as of 2012.

Fat Thickness (FAT) Fat Thickness ABC is a prediction of the difference in an adjusted 365-day 12th rib fat

thickness for calves produced by this animal. This number represents the difference in predicted fat cover

thickness in mm for calves off this animal than what is expected on average across breeds. Average Simmental FAT -1.6 with an ABC% ranking of 23, as of 2012.

Ribeye Area (REA) Ribeye area ABC is a prediction of the adjusted 365-day rib eye area measured at the 12th

rib for calves off this animal. This number represents the difference in ribeye area measured in square inches

for progeny from this animal as compared to the average across all breeds. Average Simmental REA 0.33 with an ABC% ranking of 73, as of 2012.

Intramuscular Fat (%IMF) %IMF ABC is a prediction of the percentage of the ribeye area that is taken up

by intramuscular fat for calves off this animal. This number represents the percentage of REA that is made up

of intramuscular fat (or marbling) in calves from this animal as compared to the %IMF expected on average

across all breeds. This measurement reflects marbling which is one consideration used in grading carcasses. Average Simmental %IMF -0.09 with an ABC% ranking of 31, as of 2012.

The BIO$ Economic Index is an easier way to sort out prospective sires since the BIO$ Economic Index

considers all ABCs of the evaluated bull and calculates the predicted profit based on a production system with

a defined market for offspring. The BIO$ Index is aimed at efficient lean meat production for a market

focused on AA carcasses between 775 and 900 lbs. The index predicts the amount of increased return a

producer should expect from a particular bull over 2 calving seasons. Average Simmental BIO$ 2975 with an ABC% ranking of 52, as of 2012.

Understanding ultrasound data.

Ultrasound technology allows us to actually see under an animal’s hide to measure ribeye area (REA),

marbling (IMF) and back fat (Fat). These values can be used to calculate lean meat yield (LMY). It is

important to use this information to ensure the genetic evaluations (ABCs and CSA EPDs) are pointing us in

the right direction. As important as genetics are in beef production, you can’t get away without looking AT

your animals to make sure they are sound with good conformation. Ultrasound lets you look in your animal to

make sure that you are producing a quality beef product. At the end of the day this is a beef producing

industry! Average measurement for animal on test:: ribeye area (REA) of 13 in, marbling (IMF) of 3.9% intramuscular fat, back fat (Fat)

of 8 mm, and lean meat yield (LMY) of 61% of live weight to saleable meat. 2

started with percentage animals and soon after introduced Fleckvieh into the herd. They have remained

the foundation for our breeding program even with the introduction of blacks and reds in the early '90's

and retain that status today. Our goals are to produce top quality animals to meet the requirements of both

purebred and commercial herds as well as the feedlot and freezer meat trade. These customers have led us

In 2001 we watched the interest in red Simmentals grow, so we

decided to be a part of this growing red purebred breed. People

wanted easy calving, small framed animals, with equal weight

gain as the fullbloods. It was a matter of demand, so let’s supply.

We started out purchasing yearling heifers from Western Canada

and so it began. We are very pleased with our red program.

There has been quite a demand for our bulls. The calves are

smart and get up very quickly when born, the cows are extremely

maternal with great dispositions and milk ability.

TERMS: Payment of the sale price shall be made in cash, and animals shall not be released to the buyer until satisfactory settlement has been made.

BIDS: The Auctioneer shall accept all bids, other than those considered to be irresponsible, and the bidder offering the highest bid shall be the buyer. In

By-bidding is prohibited except in the case of a joint ownership when the purpose for the bidding is to re-apportion the owners’ shares and provided that the

intention to so bid and the purpose thereof, is announced prior to all bidding for the animal.

RISK: Animals error noted in the catalogue will be announced from the Auctioneer’s stand. Any announcements from the Auctioneer’s stand will take

precedence over any matter in the catalogue, all statement in the catalogue are accurate to the best of our knowledge. All sale are final.

CERTIFICATES: Each animal offered for sale as registered, must be registered in the Herd Book of the Association. If any animal is offered for sale as eligi-

ble for registration, the seller is responsible for obtaining the certificates of registry and application therefore must be made before the animal is sold. If the

certificate of registry, together with the certificate of transfer are not provided to the buyer within 120 days following the date of the sale, the buyer is enti-

tled at his option to return the animal and to a refund of the purchase price. Certificates of registry and transfer shall be provided by the seller to the buyer

and it will be at the buyer’s responsibility and expense to transfer certificate of registry and to register.
