The freshmen are enjoying the last few classes of their first semester! We are wondering how time went by so quickly! Within the next couple weeks we will be taking our first round of final exams as our classes finish up and we will be done with our first CSD classes! Phonetics is so engrained in our minds that we are transcribing everything we see from our friends’ speech to our homework from other classes! Even walking down halls, you see phonetic transcription on the doors! In Intro to CSD we are learning about all different disorders and seeing which ones are most interesting to us! We just did our first presentations for college and overall they went extremely well!

In the Eyes of a…

Now that our three classes with Dr. Griffer are over, we sophomores are enjoying our abundant free time. We have been finishing our Capstone Projects and many of us have been taking this time to observe in the clinic. Everyone has registered for spring semester courses and we are all looking forward to taking Introduction to Language Disorders in Children, Introduction to Articulation and Phonological Disorders, and Hearing Science. It is a great feeling to be able to start to put together everything we’ve learned so far and think of it from a clinical standpoint.

-Natalie Turner

The fall semester has flown by! I can’t believe the juniors are about to begin the transition from undergraduates to the graduate portion of our program. In Language Disorders in Adults, we’re finishing up the last of our happy quizzes (woo hoo!) and continuing to learn about the different types of dysarthrias. In Audiology, we’re going more in-depth with audiograms as we learn more about speech testing. We’re still enjoying the practical, hands-on experience that comes with Audiology Lab. It definitely helped those of us who were squeamish about ears to get over our apprehension J. Good luck to everyone during final’s week! Be sure to have a fun, safe winter break.

With Christmas break fast approaching, the first-years grads are doing great. After many weeks of work, we are looking forward to the relaxation of Christmas break. Clinic is wrapping up and with that comes all of the end of the semester paperwork, but we are getting through it with the help of our supervisors and each other. Just as clinic is coming to a quick conclusion, so are our classes, and while we are still disappointed that we had to cancel our brain dissection, we are optimistic for finals week and what next semester has in store for us. We are sad that we will not see Vijay next semester in our classes, but welcome Dr. Burrows as a great professor for

First-Year Grad

The second-year grads are very busy as the semester starts to come to a close. We are working hard on our group projects for Dr. Griffer's class and they are coming along nicely. In Vijay's TBI, Dementia, and RHD class, we just finished up our presentations, which were very interesting and are starting to prepare for our last final. Our internships are going well and we are learning a lot with all of the hands on experience we are getting. It's hard to believe that our internships are almost over already, but we will be able to walk away with many valuable experiences as well as a wider range of knowledge. Although we are sad to say goodbye to our first internship, we are looking forward to our next one where we will be able to expand our horizons even more!

his classes. It’s hard to believe that after this semester we will have officially earned our bachelor’s degree and will be able to write B.S. after our names. Earning our bachelor’s degree means that we are one step closer to becoming SLPs.

Q: What has been your favorite CSD

course so far?

A: A few students in the sophomore class

said that Phonetics was the best class they've had so far. It was great being able to learn and understand our own CSD language that only SLPs could understand. But they also really enjoyed the Anatomy and Physiology of Speech class. Although it was difficult memorizing and learning pretty much the whole body from the waist up, it was so cool to actually understand how the body develops and works!

Q: How do you break up/distribute your study

time between all of your classes?

A: In between classes when I have a lot of work to

do and a lot of classes to go to, I make sure I find time to read for class and do quick study sessions, even before class while I'm just sitting around McGowan. But no matter what, I make sure to take time out to relax, take a nap, go on Facebook, and rest my mind for a while.

-Erin Byrne

Q: What is your preferred study method for

finals?

A: We could not have gotten through finals

without the help of flashcards. Studying them by ourselves in our rooms or with a big group of people was beyond helpful. To this day, we still remember our flashcard info for Anatomy!

Q: As sophomores, how often do you have to

think on your feet and improvise during/in preparation for therapy?

A: As for clinical practices and improvising

during clinic, since we are sophomores and haven't really been exposed to clinical practices yet (aside from observations), we're not exactly sure how that stuff works yet, but that is an awesome question for the juniors, and the grad students! We look forward to experiencing clinic in the next few years!

Freshman Lauren Price interviewed the Sophomore Class for helpful hints and study tips for the upcoming week of finals! Good luck, everyone!
