Time has changed for many…
Springtime is in the air, no slowing down now
unless you got caught up in daylight savings time.
I always have a problem with my biological clock
trying to adjust to the sudden shock of a one hour
difference. Too early for me but now we can get so
much more accomplished. An extra hour of productive time on our hands.
For me, an extra few hours in a week to try to adjust to the new time. Why
can’t they just leave the time thing alone? What is the answer? If you find
out, please let me know. One man once said, “Time is the most valuable
thing a man can spend.” Let’s spend our time wisely and learn something that
can help improve our service as a locksmith.
It is now time for the elections at CSCLA. We need your help to select our
board members. Please think about running for office to help out our
Association. We have not had our elections this year due to weather and the
lack of members at the meeting. Please plan to attend the meeting and vote.
It’s meeting “TIME” again, make plans to attend this Friday night.
Your President,
Mike Middick, CML

ALOA RESOURCES YOU CAN USE NOW TO BATTLE LOCKSMITH SCAMMERS
ALOA’s ongoing strategy to battle the locksmith scammer issue includes public awareness, working closely with state Attorneys General, the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, and promoting locksmith licensing as a way to give states more authority to tackle the locksmith scam situation through legislation. We also promote programs that “set members apart” from the scammers. Below are ten resources ALOA has developed that you can use today to help consumers and the industry battle the locksmith scammers. Public Service Announcements – Making the Public Aware ALOA produced a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and postcard mailers for members to use. You can go to the Members Only section of the ALOA website (www.aloa.org), click on Important Documents and download a PSA release form, then fax a signed copy back to the ALOA office (214-819-9736). You will be mailed two discs with 60 second, 30 second and 15 second radio and television spots, including instructions on how to place them at your local stations. ALOA took the pro-active measure and sent the PSA to television markets that ran “locksmith scam” stories over the last three years. The PSA’s have the ALOA tag-line, “Locksmiths You Can Trust” on the end, but another set was produced with no ALOA tag-line so members can put in their own company tagline and logo. Easy Way for Consumers to File Complaints In order for the states to know what’s going on, they need to hear from consumers on how they are being ripped-off daily. ALOA has on its homepage (www.aloa.org) a place for consumers to file a complaint with their state’s Attorney General, the FTC and the FBI (for website fraud). Direct them to the bright orange button, “Consumers Defrauded by Locksmith Scams Click Here”. This will take them to a page where they can become familiar with the problem and take direct action themselves. Filing a Formal Grievance and Keep our Industry Safe If the individual happens to be an ALOA member, we encourage consumers and members to file a formal grievance. They can contact Membership Director, Mary May at [email protected] to send them the form. ALOA member can get the new form off the Members Only section under Important Documents. While ALOA cannot get involved with pricing issues because of anti-trust laws, there are a few sections of the Code of Ethics that scammers routinely violate. Because they often use false addresses, in their advertising your Board of Directors adopted the policy that it is a violation, “To advertise and conduct business in a non-deceptive manner.” This includes the listing of an address in any print or electronic medium, whether it is an advertisement, directory listing,
CSCLA 9
business card or otherwise holding oneself out to the public as conducting business from that address, when in fact the member is not conducting business from that address. Scammers usually do not use licensed locksmiths, which violates, “To abide by applicable licensing, registration, and business regulations.” This includes not having a registration or license when the state requires it. They also spring the final cost onto the consumer after the work is done which violates, “To practice their profession in the spirit of fairness to their clients, with fidelity to security in conformance with appropriateness, and with high ideals of personal honor.” This includes failure to provide customer a written estimate and their approval before work is started. If the grievance is for false advertising, please submit evidence of the physical address (es) the member is using (phonebook listing, website), and evidence that this address does not belong to that business. This may be photographs of the location in question, county tax records that show this address doesn’t exist or the website of the business who actually has this address (with their address listed on the website). Please note that if you are submitting online directory listings, you must also submit evidence that the hone number and website is attached to that member (see below). If the state requires state licensing or registration, please print out and submit the state licensing website listing showing that they are not licensed or registered (see below). Finding out who owns the scammer’s website If the consumer got the contact information off the scammer’s website, but can’t tell who the company is or how to contact them (other than the toll free number which goes to a call center), there is a resource to find out who is the administrator of that website. Go to www.domainwhitepages.com and type in the URL. Scroll down and it will give you the name and contact information. This is also useful information when the consumer wants to contact the scammer company or give that information over to authorities. If the company is using the trademarked ALOA logo, please send that information to ALOA. ALOA can send a “cease and desist” letter or send the complaint to contacts at the hosting service who have authority to take down the website if they don’t comply. Looking up a Locksmith License We also provide consumers (and you) a way to see if a locksmith company or individual is licensed in their state on the ALOA Legislative Page (www.aloa.org/legislation) by clicking on the orange “CONSUMERS: Look up a locksmith license in your state click here” Reclaiming your web information from Google One of the tricky ways scammers fool the public is by either going into the information on a legitimate locksmiths listing in Google Maps and changing the information to their phone number and website, or by creating a new listing using the legitimate locksmiths name and changing all the other information. The September 2009 issue of Keynotes magazine ran the article, “Hot to Fight the Cyber Battle” (pages 31 to 35). It gives a step-by-step on how to combat
10 CSCLA
deceptive listings on the internet and claim your site back if it’s been “hijacked.” This issue can be found in the MEMBERS ONLY section under Keynotes Archives. Pre-written Press Release ALOA has available to members a pre-written press release you may send to your local print and broadcast news media outlets. This press release gives an overview of the problem and a checklist of key factors on avoiding a locksmith scammer. Make sure you put in the date and the name of your city in the highlighted areas and include your name as a follow up – they may want to do a story! This press release can be found on the ALOA Legislative page under “Take Action Against Locksmith Scammers”. Showing the Epidemic: Scammer News Stories Thanks to many of our members, ALOA has one of the most effective tools to describe this nation-wide problem. Scammer news reports from San Francisco to Miami can be found on ALOA Legislative page under “Take Action Against Locksmith Scammers”. These reports with hyperlinks to the actual story can be used when you are trying to get authorities to understand the epidemic and how consumers are being taken advantage of daily. You’ll want to bookmark this page, as stories are updated at least every two weeks. Finding a Qualified ALOA Member The improved FindALocksmith.com™ website will give the public an easier way to locate an ALOA member in their area, with members who are certified listed first. Enhanced features are an “opt out” procedure, and a way for ALOA members to enter data like specialties, shop hours and zip code input for radius searches. Make sure you go into the “Get Listed” portal of the website and update your information today! ALOA Yellow Page Campaign As many of you know, ALOA and TMP Directional Marketing have undertaken a new directory advertising program ALOA has undertaken. This program will allow members to advertise under a trademark ad in a column listing with the other ALOA members. This column ad will be supported by a branded ad that will appear elsewhere in the “locksmith” heading. Also, by having close contacts with the directories nation-wide, TMP will be able to cut down on the number of non-members using the ALOA logo. If you find a directory ad for a company that you know is not an ALOA member, fax that page to the Legislative Manager, along with the contact information for the offending ad. ALOA needs your help too! Because this issue takes resources above what is available at the ALOA Headquarters, is takes individuals volunteers to be the “point person” for their states. If you are willing to be that “point person” in your state, please contact ALOA.
