The First Crusades The First Crusade was started when the

Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II for knights to fight the Muslims Turks.

At the Council of Clermont in 1095 Pope Urban called Bishops and nobles to action.

Pope Urban called for a crusade to free the Holy Land because God said so.

First Crusade was a religious war.

Campaign to retake lands in Spain from the Muslims who took it.

Took the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella and 400 years to retake Spain.

A church court set up to try people accused of heresy.

Jews and Muslims had to covert to Christianity. If they didn’t they could be tried and killed.

This united the country but drove many of the skilled workers out of the country.
