North Axholme Police Report

St Oswalds Church Grounds, Church Street, Crowle –

Youths Causing annoyance. In the absence of any other

major issues in Crowle, the Neighbourhood Policing Team has

now recorded St Oswalds Church grounds as the number one

priority. This area has been on the police patrol matrix but

recent reports of youths congregating on the seats and grass

playing football have caused concerns amongst local residents.

The youths are frequently moved on complaining that there is

no where else for them to go and the local park closes on an

evening. The Police are to contact the trustees of the park to

discuss longer opening hours. The Neighbourhood team are

looking for the support of parents to address these

community concerns with their children, and for parents to take responsibility for knowing where they are on an

evening and not allowing them to drink alcohol. The Crowle Youth Club, Street Sports and other activities are

provided by the local and town council. Crowle Town Council is being asked what facilities it may be able to provide

in the future for the young people. The previous Priority One relating to the antisocial behaviour of youths in Crowle

Town centre has been closed as at this time there have been very low calls for service. The last concern was relating

to detergent being placed in the fountain in the Market Place. If anyone has any information regarding the culprit

please can they contact the Police so that suitable words of advice can be given. The town centre area will remain on

the Police patrol matrix and continue to be monitored by the Neighbourhood Team.

Manor Park/Johnsons Lane, Crowle – Youths causing a Nuisance. Calls for service are being received due to

the closure of the park during the evening. Members of the park committee are attending to lock the gates to be

confronted with youths who are using the park as a meeting area who are then reluctant to leave on request. The

Policing Team is to meet with some of the committee to discuss the need for securing the park during the evenings.

The previous Priority Two relating to the antisocial behaviour of youths and vehicles on Station Road at Keadby has

been closed as there have been low calls for service. The Neighbourhood Team will continue to monitor the

behaviour of any youths congregating at the bus shelter and on the new Generation car park. The youths have

previously said that the reason they congregate in the car park of the playing field is due to the lack of other facilities

in the village. The Neighbourhood Policing Team is continuing to patrol the area and will liaise with Street Sports, local

residents and the Parish Council. Partnership work has also been instigated and there have been media releases to

encourage people to make reports of instances and also to name any offenders seen or involved in this anti-social

behaviour.

Wildlife Crime Last months Priority Three was Wildlife Crime on Axholme North but this has now been

removed from the priority list. There is a Farm Watch/Country Watch scheme running on the Isle of Axholme and

together we are actively seeking ways to resolve rural and wildlife crime. Wildlife crime is of concern to farmers and

landowners on the Isle of Axholme. Some offenders are travelling great distances with dogs to trespass on land in the

search and pursuit of game, mainly hares and deer. It is important that every effort is made to reduce the opportunity

for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice. The Neighbourhood team together with their

uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating secure environments for farmers and landowners on the

Isle of Axholme. Since the last monthly update there have been a number of calls for service across the Scunthorpe

Division in relation to persons poaching on farm land. The offenders are usually in vehicles and move from area to

area in search of game. One male was witnessed hunting wild mammals on farm land at Crowle and has been

reported for summons for an offence under the Hunting Act of 2004.

Possession of Cannabis = A male at Keadby has been issued with a warning after being found to be in possession of a

small amount of cannabis for his own personal use. The drugs were seized and have been destroyed. Update re

Cannabis Production = A male from Crowle is currently on bail to North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding

the offences of possession of cannabis a class B drug, production of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of

an electric stun gun which is a prohibit weapon. Update ASB Vehicles = The Neighbourhood Team and Roads

Policing continue to deal with anti-social use of vehicles in Crowle. One male has been stopped regarding his manner

of driving and has had his vehicle seized as there was no valid insurance in force. Update Traffic Offences = An off

road motorcycle has been seized from males on Chapel Lane Keadby after being used on the public roads without

valid insurance cover. Update Firearms Offences = Three males have been dealt with regarding firearms offences at

Crowle. Update Wild Life Crime = Several males have been reported for daytime poaching offences in the area. The

offenders use vehicles to move around the Scunthorpe Police Division and are known to have been hare coursing on

farm land at Eastoft. Update Theft of Motor Vehicle = A male has been arrested for theft of a motor vehicle after

being seen driving a Ford Transit tipper and abandoning it in Crowle. The vehicle had been reported stolen from

Scunthorpe. Enquiries regarding the theft is still on going. Update Theft From a Dwelling = A male from Crowle has

been charged with the offence of theft of items from a family address and has been bailed to court.

MATCH REPORT CUP SEMI FINAL

CROWLE COLTS JFC U11’S Vs MARSHALL SPORT MW U 11’s

MARSHALL SPORT KICKED OFF THE 1ST HALF AND Crowle colts took charge from the start .

Arran Hawksworth totally dominated the midfield for Crowle Colts putting kai Cross through on several

occasions with the goalkeeper making some great saves . On ten minutes Arran Hawksworth put a ball

over the top for Kai Cross to run on to and as the goalkeeper came running out, Kai Cross kept his cool

and chipped the keeper to put the ball into the back of the net.

Crowle then showed some great passing of the ball and Marshall Sport was chasing the game for the next

ten minutes.

On the 20 minute mark Marshall Sports had their first real attack of the game with the defence holding

strong limiting the Marshall sports to long shots only with the Crowle goalkeeper Marcus Zincke pulling

off some superb saves .

Marshall sports were then rewarded 1 minute before half time for their sustained pressure with an

equalizer.

HALF TIME Crowle 1 – Marshall Sports 1

Crowle kicked off the second half but Marshall Sports put Crowle under pressure from the start.

David Camfield cleared the ball off the line for Crowle as the goalkeeper was beat.

Marshall sport started to pile on the pressure down the left wing but they were stopped every time with

some great tackles by Sam McCullagh stopping one attack after another. Arran Hawksworth then put a

great ball in for Kai Cross to run onto with a great shot saved by the goalkeeper winning a corner for

Crowle Colts. Sam McCullagh Took the corner and scored directly from the corner 2-1 to Crowle with

15 minutes left.

Crowle then had to put a really hard 15 minutes work in as Marshall sport piled on the pressure with

Marcus Zincke making some very good saves and

Adam Protheroe heading off the line as well .

The final whistle went and Crowle Colts have

won this epic encounter 2-1 and well

deserved.

EPWORTH POST OFFICE Epworth Post Office is of architectural interest with its Dutch gable. The building was apparently built around Vermuyden’s time although no one is quite sure because the original deeds have been lost. It became the Post Office in 1953 after being used some previous years as a general store.

OWSTON FERRY DRAIN PUMPHOUSE

The Gainsborough Steam Preservation Society renovated the pump-house and steam driven pumps at Owston Ferry, in the 1970’s although still owned by the Drainage Board. The pump-house and steam driven pumps were built in 1910. The steam boiler and engines were built by Marshshalls of Gainsborough and the pumps were built by Drysdale and Co Ltd. Of Glasgow. Fred Clayton did brickwork for the pump-house. The two pumps were each capable of lifting 80 tons 0r 20,000 gallons of water per minute. On a days pumping about two tons of coal each would be needed. The Owston Ferry Drain runs parallel to Snow Sewer as far as Westwoodside about four and a half miles. Before the pumping station was built water from the drain ran out by gravity regulated by a sluice. The steam driven pumps have been relieved by a diesel engine installed in 1964. There is still one steam driven pump in working order grandly polished and shining, showing the care taken by Mr Charlie Harrison, then the pump controller. The steam driven pump acts as a back-up pump; the deficiency of this pump is that, when the River Trent is high, the pump can only pump at about half capacity due to the Trent River Water being forced up the outfall pipe. Next month only in the Arrow WINDMILLS OF THE EPWORTH AREA Make sure you see a copy....

The Wedding of the Year

May I belatedly wish you a very Happy Easter? I nearly always manage to eat any chocolate I am given

within 24 hours and the rest of the family have to hide their eggs!

Now Easter is over, the ‗wedding season‘ begins. For some people, the ‗Wedding of the Year‘ took place

on Friday 29th April. The day before, I was invited to be The Archbishop of Canterbury at a local school

preparing for Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s big day in a ‗pretend‘ wedding service.

For at least 18 couples in the villages where I work, the ‗Wedding of the Year‘ has yet to take place. That‘s

just counting the couples who will have their Marriage Service in The Church of England.

Surely every couple, wherever they get married, believes their wedding to be ―The Wedding of the Year‖.

It‘s the only one that really matters. The vast majority of couples I meet are head over heels in love and

have huge optimism for the future.

There are sadly some married couples who fall out of love with each other or fall in love with someone

else. But as I begin another wedding season, I am full of hope that our God of love will be present at every

―Wedding of the Year‖ and with couples the world over, until death do us part‖.

From Saturday 28th – Monday 30th May, we are holding a Flower Festival at St Oswald‘s Church Crowle

with wedding dresses as a focus for the flowers. We invite you to come on the Sunday evening at 6.30pm

to celebrate marriage, renew your wedding vows and toast each other with a glass of wine!

St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School

Newsletter

Welcome to our May Newsletter

Following on from HRH Prince Seeiso of Lesotho‘s visit earlier this year, we are continuing to forge

links with our new friends overseas, full details of which will be released in a later issue.

We have arranged some events in school which we will be inviting members of our community to

attend. The first is a ―St Norbert‘s Got Talent‖ evening which has been requested by the children. This

will take place on Friday 17 June. This will be

followed by an Auction of Goods and Favours

which will be held on Saturday 2 July. Full

details of both will follow in a later issue.

Our children have, once again, been very

successful at this year‘s Scunthorpe Speech and

Drama Festival in all categories. The

photograph shows the children who entered

both as individuals and as part of our Choral

Speaking Group with their certificates and

trophies and our ―giant‖!

Thank you to all our parents who kindly

transported their own and other children to

and from the festival in Scunthorpe.

The children in Class 4 also performed poetry for the Primary Music Festival at the end of March.

They received numerous compliments on their performances of poetry based on ―Civilisations

throughout History‖ including the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. The children were also praised for

their behaviour and dress. Well done to all who attended!

Our Nursery and Reception Classes have been taking part in ―The Rhyme Challenge‖ this term. This

concluded with two performances for their parents and grandparents of the nursery rhymes which

they had learnt over the past term.

The children in Classes 3 and 4 have been learning about Fair Trade. We were very happy to welcome

Mrs Hindley to our school who taught the

children about Fair Trade. The children

were then able to look at fair trade goods

and purchase some if they wished. Class

3 then based their parents‘ assembly on

Fair Trade. The photograph shows our

three ―Fair Trade Freds‖. Thank you to

Mrs Hindley for supporting us in school.

Class 2 have also been very busy this term

and have ended the term with a very

enjoyable visit to The Ropewalk. While

they were there, they took part in a Warp

and Weft Weaving Workshop. They have

also learnt about the importance of

recycling with a workshop in school this

week.

North Axholme School Newsletter

Class Act

North Axholme‘s Class Act heat was held on Thursday 24th March. Eleven acts competed against each

other for a place in the semi-finals. The judges had a tough decision as the standard was exceptionally high

this year. The winners were chosen as Chloe Brocklesby who sang ‗Grenade‘ by Bruno Mars & Georgia

Wharton & Jaye Quinn who danced to a medley of music. They will now go forward to compete in the

semi-finals against other schools.

L-R Jaye Quinn &

Georgia Wharton Chloe Brocklesby

On Friday 11th March North Axholme

took part in lots of different red

activities for Red Nose Day.

Everyone took part in some sort of fundraising. Students and staff

had to come in something red on their top half with every red item

costing 50p. Student Council had a bake sale and the dinner ladies

had a competition to see if we could guess who was who from baby

pictures. The bake sale raised around £60. Alex Laurens, a member

of the student council commented ―We weren‘t expecting to make

so much money, we were thrilled with the contributions.‖

Alex Hall and Nicole Curtis won the Baby pictures competition

getting five out of eight correct. The prize for it was a Thornton's

Easter egg and Nicole commented ―It was good way to raise money

for Comic Relief.‖

As well as this Mr Creasy had his legs waxed for charity which

raised about £60. Although he didn‘t scream we all saw him wince

in pain! Who knows what he will do next year for Red nose Day?

Overall we raised lots of money totalling £420.

Everyone had a great time and this year we raised much more than

expected. It was truly a great day!

2nd Crowle Scout Group News

The Beavers have completed the Friendship badge which involved learning about differ-

ent countries including Spain and China. They also enjoyed tasting different Chinese food.

The Cubs are currently working on their DIY badge which includes understanding how

to use tools safety and making a key rack.

The Scouts have completed their DIY badge. This involved painting part of the building,

practical exercises including changing electrical plugs safely and bleeding radiators and

knowing about safety hazard signs.

Below can be seen photos

of the day out at a high

ropes course in Market

Rasen where 22 Cubs and

Scouts enjoyed climbing

through the trees, going on

a trapeze, high rings and zip

wire. The day was com-

pleted with a barbeque

before heading home.

20 Beavers, Cubs and

Scouts also enjoyed a swim-

ming session in April gaining

a swimming badge and hav-

ing free time on the pools

inflatable.

The next event is St Geor-

ges Day which this year is

being celebrated on the 17th

April due to the Royal

Wedding and school holi-

days. This year the parade

will be in Goole.

There is going to be a day

out at Normanby Hall in

May, the Camp in June, a

day out to the National

Railway Museum the 2nd July,

PGL in September, and a

Beaver sleepover in Octo-

ber.
