have a fabulous re-developed Garden area which is suitable for
ages 0 – 11 years olds. We have a separate baby area, as well as
separate water & digging areas and a beautiful gazebo and willow

as indoor play and are extremely excited that our children have
this wonderful garden to play in and enhance their learning.

Editors Letter...
Here we are another year over and
2013 just beginning...New Year's Eve has
always been a time for looking back to the past,
and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we
want (or need) to make and resolve to follow
through on those changes.
Did your New Year resolutions make my top
five list:
Stop smoking. Fight the bulge
Spend more time with friends/ family
Get fit. Quit drinking
Did you know that 88% of those people who set
resolutions actually fail! Perhaps we have
unrealistic targets and need to address theses to
more realistic targets! Lets make this year
different and achieve our goals. Good luck
everyone!
2012 was a good year for The Arrow! We have
excellent delivery staff ensuring the magazine is
delivered to every door in the Isle and we have
groups and individuals sending me articles every
month and of course our advertisers who
continually choose to promote their businesses
each month. A big thank you to every one for
making the Arrow the success it is today.
Enjoy the read!
The deadline for February issue is
Friday 11 January.

Isle Dance for Health-Over the next
three months a group of local musicians and dance
instructors will be running a new programme of
nine afternoon English Country dances in the Isle.
They will be helping the local NHS to encourage

of activity through gentle, enjoyable and sociable
dances.
The dances will be held from 2.30 to 4.30pm on
Thursday and Friday afternoons from 17 January in
Westwoodsie, Epworth, Crowle and Ealand. There
is no charge for the dances, but donations towards
refreshments are welcome.
So, are you over 40? Feel a little unfit? Want to try
something different that’s not too strenuous?
Prepared to try some gentle activity and learn
some dance routines?
We will explain and lead you through the dances at
your own pace so you can exercise and have fun at
the same time. No previous dance experience is
needed. No partner required! No need to book!
Just turn up with comfortable, flattish shoes.

The Crowle Christmas Craft
Fayre was the best yet. The mix of
quality products on offer and the informal, festive
atmosphere makes this event special. Nearly all of
the stallholders are from Crowle and surrounding
areas, and those who are not have family links in
the town and is a chance for the Isle of Axholme
to show off it's talented people.
We raised £160 for Jerry Green Foundation Trust
this year who do amazing work looking after and
re-housing unwanted dogs.
A massive thank you to all who attended and to
the local businesses of Crowle who very kindly
donate raffle prizes each year, and not forgetting all
the stallholders. Finally, the biggest thank you is to
Caroline who sets time aside from her busy
schedule to ensure everything runs smoothly and
to pull me back into line when required.
Without any of you this event couldn't happen.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Whatever 2012 might
have been like for you, I hope 2013 will be
better. The New Year is the time some of us
make ‘New Resolutions’. But if you are anything
like me, new resolutions don’t last long. Last year I
was forced to make a ‘mid year New Resolution’
when a doctor referred me to a Dietician! I
resolved to reduce my consumption of Cadbury’s
Wispa bars dramatically (except for my birthday,
Christmas and Easter) and cut out ‘midnight
snacks’. I have surprised even myself by sticking to
this New Resolution most of the time.
If I am going to make a New Year resolution this
year, it must be something sustainable, achievable
and measurable if it is to be worthwhile. Watch
this space!

South and West Yorkshire
Wing Duke of Edinburgh
Presentation
Saturday, 1st December, saw cadets and staff
members from South and West Yorkshire
Wing gather at Wing Headquarters, in
Castleford, for the inaugural Duke of
Edinburgh's Award presentation. The event
was open to all cadets and staff from the Wing
who have either completed the award this
year, at Bronze, Silver or Gold level, or have
completed one of the training courses run for
the award within the last 12 month and
provided an opportunity to recognise some of
the hard work and effort put in by members of
the Wing throughout the year.
The event was hosted by Wing Commander
Brian Daniel, Commanding Officer of South
and West Yorkshire Wing and was organised
by Flight Lieutenant Andy Williams, the Wing DofE Officer. Representatives from many of the Squadrons
involved with the award were present, as well as representatives of the Wing admin staff and various Sector
commanders from the Wing.
The event saw a number of cadets presented with awards for their achievements throughout the year in
completing various levels of the award. The award contains either 4 or 5 sections, which a cadet must
complete in order to be gain the award for their given level.
Wg Cdr Daniel said “The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a fantastic qualification. It ties in so well with the Air
Training Corp, with the aims of the Corps and what we do. Cadets get a lot out of the award without having
to do lots of additional work outside of the Air Cadets” He continued “It is a fantastic achievement for the
cadets and a valuable award. As an employer it is something I look for, it shows the applicant has
commitment, determination and drive. It is something I look for on a CV.”
Flt Lt A Williams said “I would like to echo what Wing Commander Daniel has said, the Award is a great
achievement for both cadets and staff. It does require commitment and time, both on behalf of the participant
and the staff who help support them.” He continued “I would like to thank everyone who has participated
and assisted with the award this year and hope that you will continue into the New Year.”
The event was a great success and has helped cement the importance of D of E within the Wing. In total 107
cadets, nearly 8% of the Wing, have gained an award this year with a further 18 staff members being
recognised for their efforts this year in passing various training courses. This builds upon the large number of
cadets and staff who have already been awarded awards at various levels over the previous years or who have
undertaken the various training courses required to run the Award.
It is important to recognise the time and effort that both the Cadets and Staff have put into the Award over
the year and over the previous years. The cadets give up a lot of their time to organise and take part in the
various aspects of the award and often come away with a great sense of achievement when they complete it
and see what their hard work can accomplish. But also the various staff in the Wing give up a lot of their time
to assist the cadets in achieving their awards and without their efforts, time and commitment the cadets would
not be able to achieve as much as they have done.
Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is one of the many opportunities the Air Training Corps. offers
to its members, both cadets and staff. It is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17 to join as a
cadet. It is also open to those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such activities
and to participate and complete their own award. If you are interested in finding out more about Air Cadets

Crowle Cadets Learn to Lead the Way A number of Crowle Air Cadets have completed the South and West Yorkshire Wing Junior Non-
Commissioned Officer (NCO) courses. The course aims to teach the cadets how to manage and work as
part of a team, how to control a group of cadets and how to get things done.
The course teaches communication skills and problem solving, as well as team management skills, all of
which are useful in civilian life as well as within the Air Cadets. It also allows cadets from many different
Squadrons to meet and interact, with many cadets forming lasting friendships that last after the course or
to renew friendships made at pervious events or camps.
Many cadets return from the courses with a new found confidence and ability to lead. This not only helps
the cadets who have attended the course, but also those back at the Squadron. It encourages others to
attend the course and develop their own skills.
Courses and training are just some of the many opportunities Crowle Squadron offers to its members,
both cadets and staff. Air Cadets is a youth organisation open to anyone aged 13-17. It is also open to
those over 20 who wish to join as a staff and assist in the running of such events If you are interested in
finding out more about Air Cadets in Crowle and surrounding area why not come down to the Cadet
Hut, Axholme Academy grounds on a Monday or Wednesday between 7:00pm – 9:00pm.
