Remember Your Flowers

One of the most beau.ful expressions of our Easter joy is

our flower cross. Perhaps an early spring will mean lots of

flowers available. Bring them to flower the cross before our

Easter worship.

As Pastor Gary con nues to recover from

surgery, here’s one of his favorite ar cles he

wrote over ten years ago.

Some things you might not know:

• There are male pine trees and female pine trees,

and the males are the ones that put out all this

yellow stuff all over the place, hoping it will find a

female tree.

• The pollen on your car may have come from Ala-

bama. Pine pollen is very buoyant and can travel in

the air for hundreds of miles.

• If you’re having sinus trouble, you can’t blame the

pine trees. Their pollen is too big — you are re-

ac%ng to all the other pollen out there along with

it.

• In China, they collect pine pollen manually and eat

it as a delicacy and a health food.

• It’s a nui-

sance that

we get really

%red of for

about two

weeks every

spring.

I’ll bet you knew

that last one. As

I write this, my

car outside is covered in a dus%ng of yellow/green

grains — and I know there’s no need to wash it yet

because it would be covered again by the %me I fin-

ished.

And the weather has been wonderful, but we don’t

dare open the windows at home or we’d have yellow/

green furniture.

I hear people talking about their eyes, par%cularly if

they wear contact lenses, I hear sniffles and coughs

during the sermons, and it’s the only %me when the

need for a rain to wash it all away seems to be the

topic everyone talks about.

It’s a real harbinger of spring, but one we typically

can’t wait to be over, in part because we know that

dogwood and azalea season is almost here.

To me, the pine pollen means that

something else is almost here too.

You see, I really like pine pollen sea-

son. When I see my yellow car, I get

a sa%sfying feeling somewhere deep

inside that life has won again.

We’ve come through another win-

ter — cold temperatures, bare

branches, bi,er winds, dark days.

But the story didn’t end there.

No...spring has come, and in a mystery far beyond my

understanding, our dead, barren world bursts forth

into life before our eyes. The future is embraced. The

promise is fulfilled.

That’s the message of the pine pollen.

Yes, it’s spring, but the pine pollen means even more

that it’s Easter. Easter — that wonderful, astounding,

stunning gi0 of grace that assures us that as dark and

empty and barren as our world may seem, as bi,er

and bi%ng as death itself seems, it’s not the end of the

story.

From a tomb, life came forth.

Easter means the future is embraced. Easter means

the promise is fulfilled. Easter means that all that is

wrong, God has now made right. And that grace is

pervasive — everywhere, covering everything — just

like the pine pollen does. Death isn’t the end. Life is.

Rejoice in the yellow stuff! Pollinate the world with

the news! Jesus lives! And with him, so do we.

In Appreciaon

Each month the Church Council recognizes and

thanks those among us who have offered themselves

to the work of the church in special ways. This month

we appreciate:

Our Wednesday meal teams which provide support

to our Wednesday programs and a wonderful fellow-

ship opportunity,

and to the whole congregaon for serving as

Bereavement Teams to offer love and support

to our church family in 3mes of sorrow and

loss.

A Note about

Church Council

The council did not meet in the

month of February, therefore

there is no council report for this month.

To My Redeemer Family,

Thank you so much for the very

generous gradua3on gi? and

party! You all mean so much to

me, and I truly consider you

family.

Thank you for puCng up with me since high school, and

for always suppor3ng me.

Sing on! Love,

Amanda Kaiser

Members of Redeemer,

Many thanks for the calls, texts, and cards I

have received since my surgery and hospitaliza-

3on. You may not know this, but this is such a

highlight of your day when you are confined

and not feeling your best. Thank you for think-

ing of me.

Fondly,

Jane Higgins

Redeemer Friends,

Thank you for all of the cards and prayers for Lois Merkle

since she moved away from Redeemer. She certainly did

appreciate them. We will keep you informed as to her

memorial later in the spring or summer.

A Li2le Locke Is on the Way

A Time to Prepare

Well, we are entering the halfway point of Lent. How’s your

Lenten discipline going? Did you take on the Instagram Len-

ten Picture Challenge? What about the countdown chains

we made at LIFT? Maybe you gave up soda or meat or took

up a daily devo'on? Remember, that no ma)er what your discipline is, the

important thing is that it helps you direct your a)en'on to God. Lent is a

'me of turning back to God and preparing for Easter. You may slip up and forget to post a picture one day, or acci-

dentally order a Coke at lunch, but don’t give up. Those 'mes that you spend thinking about your discipline, turn them

into 'mes of prayer and reflec'on. Lent can be one of the most meaningful 'mes of the year, don’t let this opportuni-

ty slip by you.

Wednesdays in March

During Lent, March 7th

, 14th

, and 21st

- dinner will be at 6:00 and youth will be from 6:30-7:00. At 7:00 we will head to

the mid-week Lenten worship service together. Pick up is s'll at 7:30.

There will be no Wednesday acvies the week of Holy Week.

hopes to both create and sustain community among the families who join us, whether

members of Redeemer, visitors, or friends. All are welcome! You make a difference when

you’re there!

Don’t keep the gi of your presence from others!

SC LCY Middle School Retreat

Friday, March 16th

– Sunday, March 18th

South Carolina Lutheran Church Youth will be having their Middle School Winter Retreat at Camp Kinard. This is an

incredible 'me for the youth of Redeemer to meet and get to know youth from all across South Carolina! SC LCY has

always been a special part of the youth here at Redeemer, and you’re sure to have a great 'me! Cost is $35 to Re-

deemer and Redeemer will send in a payment for the full cost of the retreat ($95). You must register online (h)p://

scsynod.us/lcy910wr). Sarah will know you’re registered when she receives your payment.
