The Problem
"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” Luke 14:27 (NASB)
The Cross, In Short:
For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.
So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
2 Corinthians 4:11-12 (NIV)
The Choice, In Short:
Self-Protection Self-Sacrifice"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”

Then:After saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we
sailed…and landed at the harbor of Tyre, in Syria, where the ship was to unload its cargo.
We went ashore, found the local believers, and stayed with them a week. These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go on to Jerusalem.

Cross-Bearing: Brothers and Sisters
From “Bad” to “Worse” (Acts 21:8ff NLT)
The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who
had been chosen to distribute food. He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.
Several days later a man named Agabus, who also had the gift of prophecy, arrived from Judea. He came over, took
Paul’s belt, and bound his own feet and hands with it. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit declares, ‘So shall the owner of
this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.’”
Cross-Bearing: Brothers and Sisters
From “Worse” to “Catastrophic” (Acts 21:12f
NLT)
When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged
Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.

2 Timothy 2:24-26 The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition,
if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

Cross-Bearing: Brothers and Sisters
From “Catastrophic” to “Depressing” (Acts 21:17f)
When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly.
…they praised God. And then they said, “You know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all follow
the law of Moses very seriously.”
Cross-Bearing: Spiritual Darkness
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)
