Mystery shrouds the drowning of a

professional British diver in a swimming pool here earlier this year, following a report about the incident appeared in the British press that the case has several loose ends.

Christopher Severn, 32, was reportedly found dead in a swimming pool at his friend’s villa in Saar village on February 25.

According to the report published by Devon Live, a news website based in Severn’s hometown, the deceased was a

former British Navy diver who was believed to be drunk on the

night he died.“It’s an unusual situation. I

can’t be certain how he came to drown,” the report quoted a local coroner there.

The report mentioned that the deceased’s blood alcohol level was not analysed by the Bahraini police as such procedures are only done if police deem a death to be suspicious.

According to the people accompanying Severn on the night of the mishap, he was drunk on that night and slept before everyone else went to bed. They said that they were shocked to find his body inside the swimming pool on the next day.

However, the news website quoted the man’s girlfriend in

its report stating that “he never passed out before” and that “he was an excellent swimmer and the pool wasn’t deep”. The report also mentioned that “lots of food and alcohol were consumed on the night of the mishap”.

Raising more questions on the case, the report included the testimonies of the people accompanying the deceased that night stating that no indicators of him being drinking alone at the time of the incident were found in the surroundings of the pool, such as glasses or alcohol.

The authorities here didn’t reveal any further information on the case.

A mother is suing a local nursery school accusing

it of negligence, deceit and endangering the life of her daughter. The mother claimed that her two-year-old daughter Fatima was left suffering from a fractured shoulder at the nursery for over six hours without any attention.

Speaking to DT News yesterday, Um Fatima told that the incident took place at Madeleine’s Preschool on Thursday and that she was initially informed by the teachers that they (parents) should pick Fatima up from the nursery as she’s sleeping.

“I sent her father along with the nanny to pick her up since I was at work. She was crying at the time they picked her up but they didn’t have any clue about the fracture,” Um Fatima said. She said when she reached home after work she saw her child crying hysterically, in pain and in a terrible condition.

“I knew something isn’t right as my daughter was in wrenching pain. I contacted the school to clarify what has happened to my daughter but reached a dead-end, as I was told by the educator responsible for my daughter’s class that she was not allowed to speak to parents. They weren’t cooperative at all, and when I threatened that I will take the matter to the police if they continue to deny informing me about what happened to my daughter, another teacher told me that she took a tumble from the slide,” she explained. The worried mother immediately took her daughter to the hospital after suspecting the behaviour of

the teachers. At the hospital, X-ray examinations showed that Fatima suffered from a fractured shoulder. Um Fatima told that the school continued to deny their responsibility of her daughter’s injury.

She also said that the school rejected her repeated requests to see the footage of the surveillance cameras installed inside the school to acknowledge what has really happened to her daughter.

“I insisted to know what happened to my daughter inside the school. They avoided my requests with several excuses, such as not having access to the school after school hours or not knowing how the cameras worked. At the end of it I was shocked when they told me that the cameras weren’t recording since September,” the woman said. She confirmed that she immediately lodged a complaint against the school at Nabih Saleh police station

and that she’s now in the process of hiring an attorney to take the matter to the court.

“How could they have surveillance cameras that don’t record what’s happening inside the school. What if my daughter or any other child was abused or mistreated,” the concerned mother questioned.

She added, “If I was told the truth from the beginning I wouldn’t have taken the matter to the police. Maybe register my daughter somewhere else. Accidents do happen. But they weren’t honest with me and I’m still unaware of what has caused this severe injury to my child. We paid annual fees of BD2,400 to ensure our child is in good hands, but this is disappointing.”

A spokesperson from Education Ministry told DT News that no action will be taken by the ministry, as nurseries come under the responsibility of Labour and Social Development Ministry.

Robber gang arrestedDT News [email protected]

A gang of robbers has been arrested for stealing goods

worth more than BD70,000 from several areas in the Kingdom.

The 14-member gang members, believed to be of Asian nationalities, sold liquor and were involved in flesh trade to cover up their robberies, according to the police.

The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science confirmed that the gang was involved in six burglaries in different parts of Bahrain, all carried out in a well organised manner.

“Investigations revealed that the gang robbed precious items worth more than BD70,000. Its members were also involved in prostitution, liqour sale to cover-up their thefts,” the directorate said in a statement

issued on Thursday. “The investigation team

probed the case carefully and monitored surveillance cameras footage from various locations, including Bahrain International Airport. This led to one member of the gang who was spotted stealing from a house and the robbery method was similar to the other unsolved cases, “ the directorate said in a statement.

According to the directorate,

further investigations showed that “the gang used rented cars to do crimes and wrote in the leasing documents inaccurate addresses”.

“The suspects were identified when their home was located, raided and arrested after a warrant was issued by the Public Prosecution. Legal proceedings were taken and the case was referred to the Public Publication,” the directorate added in its statement.

Well-known 3D chalk artist Jincy Babu has

turned Ramli Mall’s atrium into a canvas to celebrate and create awareness on the “International Day of the Girl Child”.

The artwork, which measures around 1240 square feet in area, is also an attempt to enter ‘Guinness World Records’ for the world’s largest 3D chalk painting.

The painting, which depicts a refugee girl rising from water with the Earth in her hands, needs to be viewed, from a certain angle, either through a 3D lens or through a mobile phone camera,

to enjoy. 3D Street Art, often known as 3D Chalk Art is a 2-dimensional art work drawn on the streets to give a 3-dimensional optical illusion when viewed from a certain angle.

“I am trying to spread the message that if you give an opportunity to a girl,  she can indeed change the future of the whole world,” Jincy, who is a talented street artist, muralist, organiser and an expert in 2D & 3D pavement art, told DT News.

Her husband, Limnesh Augustine, who works in the Ministry of Interior in Bahrain, is a world-renowned c h a l k artist.

He is well known for his work “Piece4Peace” which earned him the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest 3D painting. The couple, representing Bahrain, had also won numerous accolades from street art festivals held in USA, Holland, France, Germany, Italy, India and Mexico.

Jincy started working on her record-breaking attempt in Ramli Mall on 11 October 2017, which also falls on the International Day of the Girl Child. United Nations Information Centre (UNIC)

Manama, LuLu Hypermarket and Ramli Mall are

backing the artist  in this endeavour.

She explained that the painting, done using standard Sidewalk chalks and Liquid Chalk, aims at raising awareness on the importance of empowering the girl child as well as UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

“Being a girl and breaking this record will spread the message of the importance of girl child and how we can conquer the world using the willpower.”

Pointing to the lifebuoys in the painting, she said, “It represents six out of the 17 sustainable development goals

by the United Nations that are crucial to the well-being of girl children the world over.” “They are floating around to support her,” Jincy Babu explained.

The painting completed on 18 October 2017 is open to the public until  24 October 2017, which is the United Nations Day.

Commenting on the initiative, LuLu’s Regional Director, Juzer Rupawala, in a statement, said: “LuLu Hypermarket is honoured to collaborate with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) for the Gulf countries to highlight the important

cause of

empowering the girl child and to also showcase key aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals to raise awareness.”

“This event, held under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth & Sports Affairs, underscores our commitment to the young people of Bahrain,” he said adding: “We welcome Bahrain’s residents to come and cheer for the artist in her Guinness World Record attempt that will bring accolades to Bahrain.”

When asked about her future plans, Jincy told DT News that her next attempt will be in Amsterdam for

the Almere Chalk art festival.

World Energy Day (WED) is celebrated annually on October 22 every year to raise awareness on global

energy-related issues. The day was first proclaimed on July 22, at the World Energy Forum 2012 in Dubai, UAE. The World Energy Day is celebrated to raise awareness of the need to rally around the creation and implementation of policies that increase energy efficiency and conserve natural resources. The aim of the WED is to demonstrate the impact of energy choices made with regards to production and use on the environment at large.

The World Energy Day aims to raise awareness on the importance of energy and its crucial role in our daily life, as well as positive impacts on developing peoples economically and socially, and on ensuring their well-being. It is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The goal no. 7 mentions to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

In the country, the Standardization and Metrology Directorate, Ministry of Industry and Commerce highlighted the importance of technical specifications and regulations in supporting efforts to conserve energy and rationalize its consumption. The directorate seeks to activate control programs that enhance energy conservation, and promote consumption rationalization. It also raises awareness on the need to preserve energy. The WED is witnessing a new beginning in the move for a new energy civilization.

The WED will increase the mutual cooperation as well as knowledge and expertise exchange among countries seeking tangible progress towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy that enhance the social development.

The UN Secretary General has mentioned that “one of five people lack access to electricity and some 2.7 billion people depend on wood or animal waste for cooking at a great cost to human and environmental health. With climate change looming as a growing threat across the planet, sustainable energy is the way to meet with these challenges. We believe it can support economic growth, social equality and healthier environment. He proposed that “energy access should be a fundamental right for every person and should be made a priority by highest authorities in every land.”

The World Energy Day includes a series of activities to raise awareness of the importance of conservation and rational use of energy and to promote the sustainability of energy. Events include those that cover sustainability, conservation, climate change, carbon emission reduction, and environmental protection. This includes increasing the efficiency of transportation networks, industrial processes, buildings, and the electricity grid. It also aims to increase energy efficiency and sustainability.

Below are some ideas to get involved and take action for World Energy Day. Spread the word. Involve and engage, getting everybody to use the WED platform. Organize meetings and awareness campaigns on energy savings, create energy challenge conservation contests within departments. We need to understand that “today’s energy wastage is tomorrow’s power shortage”.

Organize meetings and awareness campaigns on energy savings, create energy challenge conservation contests within departments. We need to understand that “today’s energy wastage is tomorrow’s power shortage”.

As an individual, being energy efficient can make a big difference to the cost of our energy bill. These are some tips to help us in saving energy:• Switch off or unplug any chargers or applianceswe

Russia formally handed over six MiG-29 fighter jets to Serbia Friday, part of an arms delivery that has the potential to

accentuate tensions in the war-weary Balkans. “Thank you for these beautiful gifts,” Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at the ceremony, which was accompanied by an air show and attended by tens of thousands of visitors.

The works council of Tata Steel Netherlands said on Friday it opposed preliminary plans by Tata Steel and

Thyssenkrupp to combine their European steelmaking operations into a joint venture (JV) and would fight to block it if necessary. The JV, signed in September, would have 42,000 employees, with 10,000 in the Netherlands.

German Chancellor on Brexit

Brussels

British Prime Minister Theresa May won a modest reprieve in

stalled Brexit talks yesterday, with European Union leaders signalling their readiness to move the negotiations forward in the coming months.

But despite a more positive tone, a weakened May now faces a delicate political balancing act as she tries to meet EU demands for more concrete pledges on Britain’s divorce bill without stoking a backlash from Brexit campaigners at home, some of whom would prefer she walk away from the talks.

EU leaders said at a summit in Brussels that they would begin preparations to move into “phase two” of the Brexit negotiations in December, a step forward that would allow London to discuss its future trade relationship with the bloc.

Yet they also made clear that May would have to move between now and the end of the year on settling a financial bill that EU officials have estimated at around 60 billion euros (53.72 billion pounds).

“I think it is very clear what additional steps need to be taken,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel told a news conference at the end of the summit, saying movement on the financial settlement was crucial for progress in December.

French President Emmanuel Macron was tougher, saying the two sides had not yet completed even half of the work on the financial settlement and accusing Britain of “bluffing” by using the media to suggest there could be no deal.

“A lot is in the hands of Theresa May,” he said. An EU official said it took just 90 seconds for the 27 other leaders to adopt their Brexit

conclusions at the end of the meeting, underlining how united they are.

May has said she cannot provide a specific financial pledge until she knows the shape of the future relationship.

Asked whether she had improved an offer of about 20 billion euros, May said she had repeated commitments she made in a speech in Italy last month, when she said the bloc would not be out of pocket when it came to its budget which runs until 2020.

“What I made clear to my EU counterparts in relation to financial contributions... is that nobody need be concerned for the current budget plans ... and that we will honour the commitments that we have made during our membership,” she told a news conference before returning to Britain. (Reuters)

Study links pollution to millions of deathsLondon

Pollution is killing millions of people worldwide, mostly

through the diseases it causes including heart conditions, strokes and lung cancer, according to a large international study.

Almost all pollution-related deaths - around 92 percent - are in poor or middle-income countries, the research found. And in rapidly industrialising countries such as India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Madagascar, pollution is linked to as many as a quarter of all fatalities.

“Pollution is much more than an environmental challenge – it is a profound and pervasive threat that affects many aspects of human health and wellbeing,” said Philip Landrigan, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

in the United States who co-led the study. The study found pollution was linked to around nine million deaths in 2015.

Dirty air - caused by everything from transport and industry to indoor fires - was the biggest contributor linked to 6.5 million deaths, it said.

The next biggest was polluted water that spread gastrointestinal

diseases and parasitic infections and killed 1.8 million people.

The greatest numbers of deaths linked to pollution in that year were in India with 2.5 million, and China with 1.8 million. The research used data from the Global Burden of Disease study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

The Royal Bahrain Navy and the Royal Saudi

Navy have concluded a bilateral military exercise in the Arabian Gulf, during which they displayed a series of advanced drills to increase combat readiness and counter-terrorism capabilities.

The joint naval exercise

‘Bridge 18’ that concluded on Thursday also enhanced skills in protecting vital installations, main waterways, conducting live ammunition, reconnaissance operations, diving and sea landing operations, reported Asharq Al Awsat.

“This exercise is an extension of the series of drills carried out in both countries simultaneously to increase the combat preparedness

and exchange experiences between the two countries in implementing the joint operations against any potential threat,” the report quoted Commander of the Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral Fahd al-Ghafili as saying.

“This drill will strengthen and support the supply of joint forces in any armed conflict overseas, and the development of joint operational coordination

between naval units,” he told the newspaper.

The report, quoting Commander of “the Kingdom of Bahrain” fleet Rear Commander Eyad al-Mannai, also said that the drill is aimed at increasing battle readiness and performance in all marine operations.

He told the newspaper that the drill will unify control and enhance marine battle management.

India stood ready to further strengthen ties with the

United States, the government said yesterday, after U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson vowed to dramatically expand cooperation as a way to counter China’s influence in Asia.

Tillerson, who is visiting India next week as part of a tour to the region, said in a speech the United States had begun to discuss alternatives to Chinese infrastructure financing in Asia that critics say has spawned resentment and fears of a debt trap.

He also called for expanding the scope of security cooperation between India, the United States and Japan to include other countries such

as Australia, a plan that China has said in the past would be de-stabilising to the region.

An Indian foreign ministry

spokesman said Tillerson had made an important speech on the future of India-U.S. relations and India looked

forward to detailed discussions next week.

“We appreciate his positive evaluation of the relationship and share his optimism about its future directions,” the spokesman said.

Tillerson did not say what he meant by creating an alternative to Chinese infrastructure financing, which India has also been increasingly concerned about as China seeks to build trade and transport links in Asia. India was the only major country in Asia not to send a representative to a “Belt and Road Initiative” summit in Beijing in May because an economic corridor that China was building in Pakistan ran through territory claimed by India. The lifespan of a volcano can be measured in

millennia, and so waiting a few days for it to erupt may not sound too stressful.

But for the tens of thousands of Balinese people forced from their homes, the “imminent” danger that they have been living with for more than a week feels very real.

Ketut Seri says she has already lost track of time since arriving at one of the emergency shelters.

Sat surrounded by thin plastic bags stuffed with her children’s clothes, she says she can’t help but worry about what she’s left behind.

“I wish I had brought my cooking utensils,” she tells me, a sign that she expects to be here for the long haul.

“I’m tired, I’m sad because I cannot work,” she explains, “I cannot find any solution.”

Her children chase a football around the concrete hall they have been living in alongside another 100 evacuees.

But Ketut’s husband is absent after venturing back to their empty village to check on the animals. He is not the only one taking that risk.

The fate of the cattle and chickens many had to leave behind in the hills weighs heavily on people’s minds, and so some are crossing back and forth into the danger area every day to check on their well-being.

According to the volcanologists monitoring Mount Agung, this situation could continue for weeks, maybe even months.

An eruption may not even happen, they simply don’t know.

At the government observation base, senior

seismologist Devy Kamil remains patient - despite the long queue of journalists who have been knocking on his door all week, hoping for some news.

“There are some examples where you have swarms of activity for as long as six years,” he explains, “and it is not always ended by an eruption.”

When lava last flowed from Mount Agung in 1963, the measuring instruments they use today were not in place, and so it is impossible to know the signature behaviour of that shows an eruption is coming.

But while some here scrutinise every little piece of scientific data, others are waiting for spiritual signs.

At the Goa Lawah Hindu temple, daily prayers continue at the site of a cave that many Balinese believe is connected

to the volcano’s energy. When I ask Iputi Juliad, one

of the temple officials, what people are praying for, he says most just want good luck.

He sees the wait for news from Mount Agung as part of a much longer process. “There is a circle of life, a circle of sacrifice” he explains.

When I ask if the seismic activity is seen as a sign that the gods are angry, he is very careful in his reply.

“It is not a punishment, not a punishment,” Juliad repeats, anxious to move on from a sensitive subject.

Instead his focus is on the need to accept fate.

“Maybe an eruption, maybe not, nobody knows.”

The uncertainty is having an impact on everyone on Bali, even if they haven’t been evacuated.

The village of Rendang sits

just outside the exclusion zone, and normally the market place would be bustling with the traders selling fruit, flowers and rice.

But according to stallholder Ketut Astiningsih, most people have stopped coming and her income has taken a massive hit.

“No one is shopping. Before I could get 400,000 Rupiah ($30 USD) a day, now I can only earn 50,000 Rupiah ($3.7USD)” she explains.

So far the economic consequences for Bali’s tourism industry have not been so grave.

At the hotels, the busloads of holidaymakers keep on coming, reassured it seems by the government’s message that they will be kept well out of harm’s way.

Of course every tourist has heard or read about the

volcano, and many have been contacted by worried relatives back home.

But for most the only concern is whether an eruption would mean they could be marooned here.

As he sipped a beer on the beach at Sanur, Mathew Hunter from Cairns in Australia seemed pretty relaxed by that prospect.

“I could definitely do with a few more weeks here,” he chuckles, before adding that he is far more concerned about the fate of the tens of thousands of evacuees in emergency shelters.

Like most people on Bali, he says he would like to see this waiting game with Mount Agung come to a swift but peaceful conclusion.

“I just hope it has a few little belly rumbles and then life goes on.” (BBC)

The colossal success of A Separation has triggered an interest in director Asghar Farhadi’s back

catalogue and now his previous work, from 2009, has come to the UK. It is a really absorbing picture, powerfully acted, disturbing and suspenseful. Like A Separation it challenges the sensual politics of contemporary Iran and further shows how different Farhadi is from the older generation of Iranian masters such as Kiarostami and Makhmalbaf. The points of reference for About Elly are probably more European: Polanski’s Knife in the Water, Antonioni’s L’Avventura; and Farhadi also has Michael Haneke’s beady eye for the dynamics and symptoms of group guilt.

A group of friends – well-to-do professionals from Tehran – have gone on holiday together to the seaside, with their young children. Farhadi shows that this is a trip they have organised quite impulsively: when they arrive, there is some confusion about where they are supposed to be staying, and they have to move into a beachfront villa that happens to be vacant, but is chaotic and derelict. And there is something else. One of the party, the vivacious Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) has invited along someone of whom they know next to nothing: a young woman called Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti), who is their children’s teacher. Mischievous Sepideh is hoping to set Elly up with the single friend in their party: Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini), who is recently divorced and has just returned from a long stay doing business in Germany.

Ahmad and Elly good-naturedly see what is going on, and even go along with it, to the extent of having an intimate conversation when they go off together on an errand in the car. But Farhadi creates strange swirls and eddies of tension. (theguardian)

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANY

Date : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National Theatre

The Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniver-sary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to undertake a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this produc-tion was the second scenic interpre-tation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transitional piece between the almost mythical setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

LECTURE : LIFE AND DEATH IN EARLY DILMUN: STORIES FROM THE DILMUN BIOARCHAEOLOGY PROJECTDATE

Date: 22 November 2017, 6:30pmVenue : Bahrain National Museum –Auditorium

Since 2008, the Dilmun Bioarchaeology Project has been studying and pub-lishing the collections from Peter B. Cornwall’s 1940-41 expedition to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which now reside in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley. Cornwall excavated at least 24 burial mounds in the northern and western parts of Bahrain Island, and conducted surface survey at several archaeologi-cal sites in the al-Hasa region of Saudi Arabia. He drew on thesematerials to argue that the Bronze Age polity of Dilmun had been located in that region. By documenting and analyz-ing the skeletal remains and artifacts collected by Cornwall, our team hopes to add to anthropologists’ understand-ing of how life was experienced and death commemorated in Dilmun. Preliminary findings have been pub-lished in academic and public-orient-

ed peer-reviewed journals. We also mounted a touring museum exhibit entitled “From Death to Life in Ancient Bahrain” that features the facial recon-structions of two Early Dilmun people. Recently, we launched a new phase of the project in which AMS radiocarbon dating and stable isotope analysis are confirming the dates of the Bahraini burial mounds and shedding light on the residential mobility and dietary practices of the people buried in them. We look forward to sharing the results of our research with the audience at the Bahrain National Museum. Alexis T. Boutin (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Advisor in the Cultural Resources Management M.A. Program at Sonoma State University. Her bioarchaeological fieldwork and museum collections research focuses on ancient Near Eastern, Gulf, and eastern Mediterranean societies. Alexis’s publications use human skel-etal remains, archaeological contexts, and ancient texts to tell stories about embodied personhood in all of its iterations. Her recent projects empha-size community collaboration and stakeholder-oriented interpretation and outreach.

Your hard work is finally paying off. You can expect to receive acknowledgement and advancement, along with a possible salary increase or substantial bonus. You should receive the good news soon. Celebrate tonight with family and friends. They could also have some good news of their own to report.

This is a day for good news, particularly regarding the home. It’s likely that some positive changes are occurring or are about to occur. You may be considering a move or a major renovation. Whatever it is, all signs indicate that the changes are for the better. One way or another, by this time next year you’ll be living in a bigger, better house.Good news from distant lands could have you feeling good about your life and eagerly anticipating the future. Your thinking is sharp and clear. This is a good day to make plans, particularly if they involve travel or education. If you have the feeling that the coming weeks bring some dramatic changes for the better.

When you give your imagination free rein, you have a creative way of expressing yourself. Today you might feel like doing some public speaking or creative writing. The Peruvian Congress has approved a bill that

authorises the medicinal and therapeutic use of cannabis and its derivatives.

The proposal received 67 votes against five as three abstained in a full legislative on Thursday, allowing the bill to be enacted by the executive without going through the second voting session as required by law.

The bill will legalise the medicinal use of marijuana and its derivatives, such as cannabis oil, to alleviate

the symptoms of diseases such as cancer, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease, Efe news reported.

Congressman Alberto de Belaunde, who was the advocate of the proposal, said that once the bill is promulgated the government will have 60 days to work on the regulations.

De Belaunde added that this document must be published in advance so that all citizens will have access to its content and send suggestions and proposals.(IANS)

North Korea has sent a letter filled with Trump-

bashing to the Australian Parliament, urging MPs to condemn Washington’s saber-rattling, while at the same time assuring them of its “highest consideration.”

The letter was penned by North Korea’s Foreign Affairs Committee and sent to Australia’s Indonesian embassy late September, but was received by Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop

only last week. The letter starts with

the North Korean embassy extending compliments to the Australian Parliament and saying that it has dispatched similar letters to the lawmakers of other countries.

The thrust of the letter is fervent criticism of US President Donald Trump’s declared principle of putting America first “at the expense of the whole world.” (RT)

“If you want to negotiate with (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un, and your goal is to avoid war and try to be able to have a diplomatic resolu-tion, the worst thing you can do is first threaten to destroy his country in the United Nations”

Senior militant commander Asad Afridi has emerged as the favourite to become the new leader of a deadly Pakistani Taliban faction, days after a U.S. drone strike killed the group’s chief.

Do you think concerns raised by former US presidents Barack Obama and George W Bush could weaken Donald Trump’s popularity?

Wanted man turns himself in after losing bet

Washington

A wanted Michigan man has turned himself in

after losing a bet he made with police on Facebook. Michael Zaydel had promised to give himself up to police if a Facebook post about an existing arrest warrant received more than 1,000 shares.

The cocky 21-year-old even promised to bring Redford Township Police Department (RTPD) officers a dozen doughnuts if they were victorious in the challenge.

“I’m not worried about it,” he wrote. “If your next post gets 1,000 shares I’ll turn myself in with a dozen doughnuts and that’s a promise...And I’ll pick up every piece of litter around your public schools.”

In a follow-up post, the department said he “may or may not be a man of his word,” adding, “it is our experience everyone gets caught at some point. He has drawn a lot of attention to himself, and that makes it hard to hide from reality.” (Telegraph)

Washington

The father of a fallen soldier said President

Donald Trump offered to send him $25,000 during a condolence call, but that he hasn’t received a check.

Chris Baldridge’s son, Army Cpl. Dillon Baldridge, died in Afghanistan in June, the Washington Post reports. Baldridge says Trump called a few weeks later and they spoke for about 15 minutes. When Baldridge noted he was struggling to make ends meet, while his ex-wife

was expected to receive a $100,000 death gratuity from the Pentagon, Trump offered to write a check himself.

“He said, ‘I’m going to write you a check out of my personal account for $25,000,’ and I was just floored,” Baldridge said. “I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded. He said, ‘No other president has ever done something like this,’ but he said, ‘I’m going to do it.’”

When Baldridge later received a condolence letter,

he says, “I opened it up and read it, and I was hoping to see a check in there, to be honest. I know it was kind of far-fetched thinking. But I was like, ‘Damn, no check.’ Just a letter saying ‘I’m sorry.’”A White House spokesperson said, “The check has been sent. It’s disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and sincere gesture, made privately by the President, and using it to advance the media’s biased agenda.” (time.com)

Father of fallen soldier: Trump promised $25,000

CIA Director Mike Pompeo said the United States has to act as if North

Korea is on the verge of being able to strike it with a missile and act accordingly -- and that President Donald Trump is ready to do so.

“From a US policy perspective, we ought to behave as if we are on the cusp of them achieving that objective,” Pompeo said Thursday at a security forum held by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

“They are so far along in that, it’s now a matter of thinking about how do you stop the final step.”

“Whether it happens on Tuesday or a month from Tuesday, we’re in a time where the President has concluded that we have a global effort to ensure that [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Un does not obtain that capacity,” Pompeo continued. (CNN)

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W Bush have voiced concern

about the current political climate in the US, in comments seen as a veiled rebuke of Donald Trump’s leadership.

Obama urged Americans to reject the politics of “division” and “fear”, while Bush criticised “bullying and prejudice” in public life. They were speaking separately. Neither mentioned President Trump by name.

Trump, who has been critical of his two predecessors, is yet to comment.

Ex-presidents traditionally shy away from commenting publicly on their successors, and Obama said on leaving office he would extend that courtesy for a time to Trump, as George W Bush had to him.

He has broken his silence since to issue statements on Trump’s efforts to dismantle Obamacare, as well as his controversial “Muslim ban” and decision to abandon the Paris climate accord. (BBC)

Moscow

The launch of Sputnik, the first man-made satellite,

60 years ago kicked off the space race between the Soviet Union and America.

The satellite was a success not just in terms of scientific advancement but in terms of providing a propaganda opportunity for the socialist state.

Early reports detailed a wealth of technical information about the launch of the “Earth satellite”, such was the general interest in it.

‘Like a flashing spark’One news correspondent described seeing the satellite appear “like a flashing spark over the horizon” and the Communist Party’s main newspaper, Pravda, wrote that “all the world heard

the announcement of the launching of the artificial moon”.

But reports by the state news agency Tass also mentioned its orbital velocity of about 8km a second, the fact that it was travelling at up to 900km above the surface of the earth, and that Sputnik was making one complete revolution in an hour and 35 minutes.

Russian media also detailed the frequencies and wavelengths on which Sputnik was emitting regular beeps, saying its transmitters were powerful enough for amateur radio operators to be able to receive them.

Later, radio broadcasts to America touted the fact that the Soviet magazine Radio was offering “special prizes” for radio hams who submitted reports of the signals.

Special broadcasts listed the places and times the satellite was expected to pass over.

The day after its launch, Tass and Russian radio reported world reaction to it, noting how major media outlets like AFP, the Daily Mail and the BBC had reported it and how “some US radio stations interrupted their programmes in order to broadcast the satellite’s signals”.

‘Victory for the Soviet order’On Soviet radio, various scientists, such as jet propulsion expert Professor Kirill Stanyukovich, called it “a great victory not only for Soviet science but also for Soviet order”.

“I think that the very fact that this has been a c h i e v e d in our socialist c o u n t r y must not be regarded as mere c h a n c e , ” a n o t h e r academic told listeners. “ T h a t we are not as rich as America is no secret to us. Why then has it happened that we have been capable of solving these most

advanced and difficult scientific and technical problems ahead of Americans?”

Several digs at America made their way into reports.

“For 40 years they closed their eyes to the enormous successes of Soviet industry and agriculture,” one radio broadcast said. “Now the most reactionary personalities in the USA are trying to raise some

doubts about the tremendous value and great significance of this new success of Soviet science.”

BBC Monitoring, a unit of the World Service which monitored Soviet broadcasts at the time, notes that “Leading officials were quoted by Tass as showing reluctance to accept the news; and Moscow radio told the home audience on the 7th that the United States Information Agency had adopted a policy of minimising the military and scientific significance of the achievement. US scientists, on the other hand, were given as expressing pleased congratulations.”

Influence in a different spaceToday, the name Sputnik is also associated with an

international news agency, which has a presence on the web and radio, and is one of the main media outlets through which Russia influences global opinion. Sputnik tends to seek audiences on the political margins - whether it’s supporters of the Front National in France, or the Democrat Bernie Sanders in the US.

Its political stances include the idea that NATO is a menace to world peace, criticism of what it sees as US hegemony, and the general decadence of Western democracies and their institutions, especially in the face of the challenges posed by Islamist terrorism and migration into Europe.

Sputnik is still potent force for Russian influence, just in a different sort of space now. (BBC)

Keep your eyes to the sky this weekend: You’ll be

able to see one of the year’s best space shows — the peak of the Orionid meteor shower.

“The Orionids are popular among stargazers because all of its individual shooting stars are fragments of the most famous comet of all time, Halley’s Comet,” Slooh astronomer Bob Berman said.

The shower should be visible both Friday and Saturday nights, and the best viewing will be between midnight and dawn.

Though the meteors will emanate from the eastern horizon, they will streak across the entire sky and will be visible from anywhere on Earth, according to NASA. By dawn, they should be high in the Southern sky, Sky and Telescope said.

From a dark site, you might see a maximum of about 10 to 15 meteors per

hour, said Bruce McClure of EarthSky.

The meteors that streak

across the sky are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor showers because the

Earth is hitting the stream of particles almost head-on, according to Space.com.

As the comet moves through space, it leaves debris in its wake that strikes Earth’s atmosphere

most fully around Oct. 20-22, each year. Although the comet itself is nowhere near Earth, we’re now intersecting the comet’s orbit.

If the meteors originate from Halley’s, why are they called the Orionids? “Meteors in annual showers are named for the point in our sky from which they appear to radiate,” according to EarthSky’s Deborah Byrd. “The radiant point for the Orionids is in the direction of the famous constellation Orion the Hunter.”

This year will be a particularly good year for viewing the Orionids since the peak of the shower falls just days after the new moon, meaning there will be little natural light pollution for the shower to compete with, AccuWeather said.

If you miss this shower, you can still catch the Leonids in November and the Geminds in December. (usatoday.com)

Medium pacer Hasan Ali grabbed three wickets

to celebrate his rise to the top of the one-day rankings as Pakistan downed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the fourth day-night international in Sharjah yesterday.

Hasan took 3-37 while spinners Shadab Khan (2-29) and Imad Wasim (2-13) also chipped in with useful wickets as Sri Lanka were skittled out for 173 in 43.4 overs.

Only Lahiru Thirimanne resisted with a 94-ball 62 on a flat pitch at Sharjah stadium on which Babar Azam scored a stroke filled 69 not out and Shoaib Malik matched him, also with an unbeaten 69, to help Pakistan overhaul the low target in 39 overs.

Despite Pakistan losing three early wickets, the target was never out of reach as Azam and Malik shared an unbroken 119 runs fourth-wicket stand.

Malik smashed Milinda Siriwardana for a boundary and a six to seal the victory.

He hit three sixes in all and two boundaries in his 81-ball knock while Azam, who had scored successive hundreds in the first two matches, had five boundaries off 101 balls.

Pakistan lost Imam-ul-Haq for two after his debut hundred in the last match while Fakhar Zaman fell for 17 and Mohammad Hafeez made nine.

This was Pakistan’s eighth consecutive win which also included their Champions Trophy triumph

in England in June while Sri Lanka succumbed to their 11th consecutive ODI defeat.

The fifth and final match is also in Sharjah on Monday.

Earlier, Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start when their in-form skipper Upul Tharanga was bowled by debutant left-arm pacer Usman Shinwari for nought off his second delivery.

Shinwari was one of two changes Pakistan made from the third one-dayer which they won by seven wickets in Abu Dhabi. Also brought back was Wasim. They replaced Fahim Ashraf and Rumman Raees. (AFP)

Andre De Grasse eyes Canadian 100m record

Toronto

Andre De Grasse is eager to return stronger from a season-ending

hamstring injury that deprived him of a showdown with Usain Bolt and is now focused on breaking the Canadian 100 meters record.

The 22-year-old triple Olympic sprint medallist, who was expected to be Bolt’s main rival for his 100m crown in the Jamaican’s farewell championship in London, begins training next week for a campaign that will come with lofty expectations.

“Still trying to map out my goals,” De Grasse, who acknowledged it will be years before he seeks the title of world’s fastest man, said in an interview.

“I want to break the Canadian record but definitely there are ways and steps to do it and I haven’t thought

about the whole process of the goals yet but it’s early.”

To break the Canadian 100m record of 9.84 seconds which was set by Donovan Bailey when he won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, De Grasse said he needs to focus on improving his starts.

Once he gets upright, De Grasse showcases a speedy stride that is near perfection.

But De Grasse, who has been running competitively for five years, has not perfected the complex string of movements to quickly get from the sound of a pistol into a full gallop.

“My transition phase is getting good, my finish is strong so just trying to work on that first 30 meters,” said De Grasse, who finished third at the Rio Olympics with a personal best time of 9.91. (Reuters)

Dale Steyn targets November returnLondon

Fast bowler Dale Steyn is hoping to make a comeback

following a year out with a shoulder injury at next month’s South African domestic Twenty20 competition.

Following an extended spell of rehabilitation, Steyn said he has finally recovered from the shoulder problem he suffered while bowling against Australia during last November’s test series.

“My arm is perfect, if anything its stronger than it was before because it’s (been) reinforced with a pin,” the 34-year-old told ESPNcricinfo.

“It’s 100 percent now. I’ve

just got to start reminding myself how to bowl at high speeds because I haven’t done it for a year.”

Steyn is particularly excited to work under Ottis Gibson, the former fast bowler who is now South Africa’s new head coach.

“It’s the first time in my career I have had a head coach who was a bowler,” he added.

“It gets me excited because he (Gibson) is on the same wavelength as us. For the first time its also great to see that the head coach is out in the middle when the bowlers are bowling and not in the nets with the batters.” (Reuters)

Hamilton fastest in first practice in USAustin

Lewis Hamilton set a searing pace as he dominated first

practice at the United States Grand Prix.

The title leader’s Mercedes was 0.593 seconds quicker than rival Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari, with Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas third.

Hamilton will clinch his fourth title on Sunday if he wins the race with Vettel lower than sixth.

But he has labelled this idea as “silly”, saying he expects Ferrari will not have a fourth bad race in a row.

Vettel’s title hopes have been almost completely crushed by three consecutive terrible results in the races in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, from two of which he retired.

Meanwhile, Hamilton has been in a rich vein of form that has seen him win four of the five races since Formula 1 returned from its summer break at the end of August.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen ended the session fourth,

on a day on which his team announced that he had extended his contract with the team until the end of 2020 in a deal that is believed to include a significant pay rise.

But Verstappen starts the weekend knowing he will drop down the grid as a result of Renault fitting an upgraded engine to his car.

Although it has not been

officially confirmed, the Dutchman is to be given a new internal combustion engine which will mean a penalty for excessive engine usage.

The new engine is also being given to Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg, whose 20-place grid penalty was confirmed on Friday, and Toro Rosso debutant Brendon Hartley.

Hartley ended the first

session of his belated F1 debut 14th quickest and then received a 25-place grid penalty for his car’s engine change.

Their team-mates will not receive the upgrade for the rest of the season.

Hulkenberg ended the session 12th, two places behind new team-mate Carlos Sainz. (BBC)

Verstappen extends Red Bull deal to 2020

Austin

Max Verstappen has extended his Red Bull

contract by a year to the end of the 2020 season.

The move seems to end speculation about the possibility of the 20-year-old Dutchman moving to Mercedes or Ferrari within the next couple of years.

He said: “Red Bull has always shown their faith and belief in me.

“I’m very happy to commit further to them and I’m looking forward to working together to enjoy more success

in the years to come.”Verstappen’s previous

contract ran until the end of 2019 but had clauses that could have seen him leave at the end of next season, depending on certain circumstances which are not public.

He was promoted to the Red Bull senior team from Toro Rosso part-way through the 2016 season and won his first race for the team at the Spanish Grand Prix.

He has since impressed with a series of starring drives, and took a second career victory in Malaysia two races ago. (BBC)

Brendon Hartley will have hefty grid penaltyAustin

New Zealander Brendon Hartley collected a grid

penalty before he had even stepped into the car for his Formula One debut at the U.S. Grand Prix yesterday.

The 27-year-old, taking the place of Frenchman Pierre Gasly at Toro Rosso, took to the track for the first free practice session knowing he will have a drop of at

least 25 places on Sunday due to power unit changes.

The governing FIA said Hartley, who last drove a single-seater race car in 2012, would have a new engine, motor generator unit-heat (MGU-H), energy store and control electronics.

The new components incur penalties for exceeding the season’s allocation.

Team principal Franz Tost said

the decision to change the power unit components had been taken before Hartley was announced as Gasly’s temporary replacement.

The French rookie is racing in Japan, where he can win the Super Formula title this weekend.

Hartley, a Le Mans 24 Hours winner and world endurance champion, is the first New Zealand driver in Formula One for 33 years. (Reuters)

Venus Williams secures Muguruza rematch at WTA FinalsSingapore

Venus Williams will get an opportunity to avenge

her Wimbledon final defeat by Garbine Muguruza at the eight-player WTA Finals after the veteran American was placed in the same round-robin group as the Spaniard at yesterday’s draw.

World number two Muguruza swatted aside the 37-year-old 7-5 6-0 in July to claim her second grand slam title and next week’s showdown will be the highlight of the White Group, which also includes Czech Karolina Pliskova and French Open

holder Jelena Ostapenko. The power-packed pool, full

of aggressive players armed with big serves, will open proceedings on Sunday when Pliskova faces 2008 WTA Finals champion Williams, before Muguruza takes on Latvia’s Ostapenko at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“Maybe I need to channel some of those memories (from 2008) to play well here... we have an amazing field, the tournament is the best it has ever been run and the excitement level is high,” Williams said at the glitzy pre-tournament gala

ceremony.World number one Simona

Halep was drawn in the Red Group alongside Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki and in-form Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, with play in that pool starting on Monday.

Halep will also have revenge in mind when she faces Garcia for the second time in three weeks after the Frenchwoman beat her in the China Open final in Beijing, a day after the Romanian became the 25th woman to climb to the top of the WTA rankings. (Reuters)

Olivier Giroud scores winner

London

Olivier Giroud scored a stunning winner as a much-changed Arsenal

side saw off 10-man Red Star Belgrade in their Europa League clash.

Arsene Wenger made nine alterations from the team that lost at Watford on Saturday and it was an underwhelming display from his side until Giroud’s overhead kick settled the game in favour of the visitors.

The 1-0 win maintains Arsenal’s perfect start to their Europa League campaign as they move closer to qualifying for the round of 32.

Red Star hit the post in the first half and worked Petr Cech, and the hosts were incensed to lose Milan Rodic to a red card in the closing stages.

Despite making a host of changes, Wenger’s experienced campaigners showed their class, Cech making a number of key saves before Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Giroud combined for the only goal of the contest.

It was a slow start for both sides but Red Star goalkeeper Milan Borjan did superbly to keep out Walcott’s effort on 15 minutes, saving with his feet from the England international.

Red Star skipper Mitchell Donald arrowed a shot wide of Cech’s goal with the hosts’ first opening of the game.

Striker Richmond Boakye, reportedly attracting the attention of Chelsea, headed against the post when free in front of goal as Arsenal failed to deal with Nenad Krsticic’s corner.

The visitors seemed rattled and Reiss Nelson allowed Nemanja Radonjic to collect the ball from a cross, forcing a low save from Cech before Nelson recovered to block Radonjic’s second attempt off the rebound.

Arsenal should have taken the lead soon after the interval.

Teenager Joe Willock did well to break into the box and feed Walcott, whose drilled strike flew towards Giroud, with the Frenchman prodding at the ball when

unmarked seven yards from goal.Nelson was next to make in-roads

but his pass to Walcott saw the forward miskick altogether, the young wing-back then stinging the palms of Borjan with his own strike.

Red Star almost made Arsenal pay for their profligacy as Krsticic sent a bullet header goalwards but too close to Cech to beat the Gunners captain.

Elneny then gifted possession to Radonijc and he too forced Cech into action with a well-struck effort.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, Red Star were reduced to 10 men when Rodic was shown a second yellow card with just under 10 minutes remaining for catching Francis Coquelin with a stray arm.

It took Arsenal hardly any time to make their numerical advantage pay off as Wilshere and Walcott exchanged passes before the latter headed the ball across for Giroud to finish in spectacular style and secure the win. (espn.in)

Jose Mourinho expects Ibrah to return in 2017

London

Jose Mourinho has confirmed he expects Zlatan

Ibrahimovic to be back playing for Manchester United before the end of the year.

Ibrahimovic has been sidelined since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in April. But the Swede is stepping up his recovery at United’s Carrington training base and Mourinho is confident he will be back in action this year. Telegraph Sport reported last month that Ibrahimovic expects to be available again in time for the Christmas run of fixtures although he could return before then.

“Zlatan is here, under our control, working as I would expect, so, so hard, but he’s not

back in a week or a couple of weeks,” said Mourinho.

“Let’s let him take his time and be back in the right moment. Do I think he will be back in 2017? Yes I do, but it’s just a feeling.”

Marcus Rashford will be available to face Huddersfield Town on Saturday, despite being substituted against Benfica on Wednesday with a knee problem.

But Mourinho was again unprepared to put a timescale on Paul Pogba’s return. The France midfielder is currently in Miami as he recovers from a serious hamstring injury but the United manager said he did not know when the player would be available again. (telegraph.co.uk)

Dream Days event: Stars meet fansManchester

Manchester United’s stars posed for photos

with fans during the club’s charity event at the Aon Training Complex.

United host two ‘Dream Days’ events a year which enables seriously ill children and adults to meet their idols at the club.

Marcus Rashford was among a host of players to take a break from training to meet and greet the fans.

Jose Mournhio’s men were kept busy taking selfies with their guests along with the club’s Red Devil mascot.

The adults and children suffering with life-limiting illnesses were able to have a look around the training complex before meeting and then watching their side prepare for Saturday’s match against Huddersfield.

United will hope to take inspiration from the fans they met in order to keep up with their City rivals at the top of the Premier League.

The United players are returning from their latest Champions League tie on Wednesday, where they beat Benfica 1-0.

Despite the victory, United failed to impress in a dour game in Lisbon but the three points put them in a strong position to qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition.

One concern from the midweek match was the injury to Rashford who was forced off after receiving a knock to his knee.

However, the youngster’s injury does not look too serious which will give a boost to Mourinho’s plans for the weekend. (dailymail.co.uk)

Nibali ends season with victory

Taipei

Bahrain-Merida’s Vincenzo Nibali ended his 2017 season with victory at the Taiwan KOM Challenge,

finishing more than a minute ahead of Spain’s Oscar Pujol and John Ebsen.

Nibali reportedly set a new record for the event with a time of 3:19:54. The 106km event starts at sea level and finishes at an altitude of 3,275 metres atop the Wuling Pass, Taiwan’s highest road.

Former Cannondale rider Phil Gaimon finished sixth, 10 minutes back, with 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans 10th. Britain’s Emma Pooley won the women’s race.

The Taiwan KOM Challenge brought down the curtain on Nibali’s 2017 season. He raced for a total of 81 days, finishing third at Giro d’Italia, second to Chris Froome at the Vuelta a Espana and winning Il Lombardia for a second time.

“It was a hard race because we went from sea level up to 3,275 metres. I’ve never ridden such a long and hard climb before in my entire life,” Nibali said after posing on the winner’s podium.

“I waited until the final 10 kilometres to attack when I saw the other riders tired and suffering. It was my last race of the season and so now its finally time for some holidays.”

A total of 600 riders took part in the event. Nibali and Pooley each collect a prize of 500,000 Taiwan dollars – close to 14,000 Euro - for victory. Nibali took part with his brother Antonio and Bahrain-Merida teammate Chun Kai Feng and team manager Brent Copeland. (cyclingnews)
