Phone Call As the 2015 – 2017 Crookwell Public School Plan comes to the end of its life our thoughts are turning to the development the 2018 – 2020 Crookwell Public School Plan. In the development of a school plan it is imperative that each of the various stakeholders contribute towards the plan’s development.

Consequently, before the end of term a phone survey of randomly selected school families will be conducted to gauge your views as parents. It is not an onerous survey, there are only five questions to which we are seeking a frank and honest answer. I encourage you to enthusiastically participate in the survey to help us best develop a plan that effectively caters for the educational needs of all of Crookwell Public School’s students. If you are not contacted by phone in the coming weeks and you would like to take part in the survey, I encourage you to contact the school to complete the questionnaire. Poster Competition

MADD Night at Crookwell High Year 6 students were once again invited to perform at the Crookwell High School biannual MADD Night held last Friday night. Students performed a Djembe percussion routine, danced to a musical item performed by Year 12 students and sang with students from St Mary’s Primary School and Crookwell High School students. Participating students were enthralled by the items performed by high school students and were thrilled to see many of our ex-students on the stage, singing, dancing, acting and involved in a variety of musical items. Once again our students brought credit to our school, not only through their amazing performances, but also by their behaviour and their adaptability. Well done Year 6 performers!

Our amazing and talented MADD Night performers!

Hockey Gala Day On Wednesday 20th September Crookwell Public School and St Mary’s are running the Annual School Seven-a-side Hockey Gala Day at Todkill Park. This day is for all students in Years 3 to 6 who would like to participate. The day is all about participation and learning a new skill, so even if you have never picked up a hockey stick before, this day is suitable for you! Students will need to bring their own mouth guards and shin pads but sticks are available for loan if needed.

There will be canteen and BBQ facilities available on the day and these will be run by parents from both St Mary’s and Crookwell Public School. Students may bring money to purchase from these facilities.

The day will begin at 9.20am and students will arrive on their school buses or need to be dropped at Todkill Park by their parents. Buses will be organised to pick students up at the end of the day from Todkill Park. If your child usually walks home or is picked up by a parent, this will need to happen from Todkill Park.

Students will play approximately six shortened games of modified hockey against teams from Crookwell, Goulburn, Gunning and the Southern Highlands.

There will also be a skills session run by NSW Hockey representatives, State Representatives and other recognised players. Umpires and helpers will be supplied by high school students from Crookwell and Goulburn.

We are also seeking parents who would be able to assist for an hour to work on the canteen and BBQ. If you can assist please contact the school on 4832 1213.

Notes for all students in Years 3 to 6 will be handed out this week and if you would like your child to participate these notes must be returned no later than Friday 8th September.

Hope to see you there, Miss Anna Kemp

Flying Start During Flying Start this week, we explored numbers and patterns. We read the story ‘The very blue thingamajig’ then decorated our own thingamajigs with coloured paper. Some students made patterns using their coloured paper. After our morning tea we went outside for a quick play as the wind made it a little cool. There is only two more Flying Start sessions left for 2017, with the last one being celebrated with a little party. Orientation Week will be in Week 6 of Term 4, 13th-17th November.

STEM Camp A small group of students from Years 5 and 6 will be participating in a very exciting program during the upcoming school holidays. Students will be joining others in Years 5,6 and 7 from across the district at Trinity Catholic College for a three day camp in which students must complete a variety of challenging tasks that will expand their knowledge in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This camp aims to build students problem solving skills and expanding their knowledge as they enter secondary education as well as developing friendships with staff and students within the local schooling community. Tasks will involve experimentation, designing, making, evaluating and building a variety of objects to solve problems based upon a fictitious “Day Zero” scenario.

Robotic Revolution Students in Years 3 to 6 had the opportunity to participate in a whole day robotics workshop to explore various STEM concepts. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities encourage the students to think beyond their normal parameters and challenge them in a variety of problem solving techniques. Students had to design, build and program a range of robots for activities such as rescues and creating timed dance sequences.

Vincent Bill, Myles Pitt-Lancaster, Lachlann Tetley, Levi Woods and Riley Osborne design their rescue robot.

Bethany Murray, Bonita Holman, Isla Stephenson and Emma Ward design their dance robot.

Regional Athletes Last week seven students represented Crookwell Public School at the Regional Athletics. Alana Hollis, Oliver Corbally-Stourton, Tiana-Mae Lewis, Lillian Skelly, Luke Palmer, Mackenzie Gauci and Sophie Ward qualified to go to the AIS in Bruce, Canberra.

Crookwell Public School students displayed outstanding sportsmanship and achieved great results in their events. Alana Hollis and Mackenzie Gauci competed in shot put events, with Mackenzie coming 11th in her age group. Oliver Stourton and Luke Palmer both leaped 115cm in the high jump event. Luke Palmer also competed in the 100m placing 16th, 200m placing 7th and 800m placing 22nd. Lillian Skelly came 25th in the 100m, she came first in her 200m heat but just wasn't quick enough to make it in the top three for state and 15th in the 800m. Sophie Ward came 5th in her heat for the 100m and was a member of the girls relay team.

The girls relay team consisting of Tiana-Mae Lewis, Lillian Skelly, Sophie Ward and Mackenzie Gauci, (thank you Mackenzie for filling in, the support you showed to your peers is tremendous), ran their race in 1:07:84. They finished 5th in their heat and came 23rd out of 31 schools. Fantastic effort girls! Milton Public had the quickest time in the heats with 1:01:93, so the girls weren't really that far behind.

Another student who showed wonderful support to his peers was Luke Palmer who helped the girls relay team get their baton changes right before the race and he even went down with them to the marshalling area to support them. Luke really took it in his stride to fill the role of manager. Thank you Luke!

Many thanks must go to the parents who transported children to and from the event and for their amazing support on the day. Thank you!

If you’re a parent, grandparent or have time, then please consider helping to deliver ethics classes. Volunteers often say that they find the classes interesting and informative to teach. Volunteers are well supported by teachers who stay in the classroom.

Primary Ethics provides the opportunity for NSW public primary school students who don’t attend scripture classes (SRE) to participate in philosophical ethics classes. Primary Ethics employs professional experts to train and support volunteers and who are always available for you.

The weekly lessons are scripted for you and easy to follow. It takes about 30 minutes to prepare for lessons held during school term. The scripted lessons do not tell the children what to think but rather prompt the children’s own thinking and discussion about topics such as friendship, sharing, laziness, fairness. You are there only to help everybody have input into the discussion. The classes teach children how to think about and discuss moral issues in a mutually respectful way. The children develop skills they can use to solve problems throughout their lives.
