Flying Start This week during Flying Start, we listened to a story on the interactive television and decorated a dinosaur in a mosaic fashion. We used glue to stick on lots of coloured square bits of paper, with some students making a pattern along their dinosaur’s back. Our gluing and name writing skills are developing and students are engaging in activities for longer periods of time. After our morning tea, we enjoyed playing in the warm sunshine, we didn’t even need our big coats. Three more Flying Start sessions left then it will be Orientation Week in Term 4 commencing Monday 18

th to Friday 22

Infants Town Library Visit This week it was 1/2 Kangaroo and 1/2 Emus turn to visit the town library. As we are going to Canberra to watch the performance of Possum Magic, by Mem Fox, the lovely ladies at the town library thought it would be exciting to read another story written by Mem Fox. Claire Plumb read the book ‘This and That’, then we all used our amazing paper folding skills to make our own mice bookmarks. We have thoroughly enjoyed visiting the library and we look forward to our next visit which will be our last for the term.

Emma Campbell, Indi Fahey and Georgie Robertson work

together to make their fantastic mice!

Angus Taylor enjoys our new ground! This week our school had the pleasure of welcoming Federal Member Angus Taylor to the school to enjoy the new synthetic turf that has been installed on Benson’s Green. Mr Taylor is a strong supporter of children and sport and was very interested in hearing about the current success of both our girls and boys hockey teams. Both teams have enjoyed practising on the turf, similar to that they play each of their games on. Mr Taylor and Mr Whittington both enjoyed a furious game of hockey on the turf with some of our boy and girl players. Mr Taylor was very impressed with the skills of our players and looks forward to following their progress in the future.

Students test out the turf with Federal Member Mr Angus Taylor.

Friday Fun Day We love Friday Fun Day afternoon activities. It’s something that we look forward to every week. Last week we had some fun and exciting activities on offer; games in the hall, icing biscuits, farmyard play and STEM activities. Miss O’Neill organised the icing of some milk arrowroot biscuits. Students who chose this activity mixed the icing, added some colour, spread the icing on their biscuits, decorated them with smarties and snakes then got to eat their creations. They tasted delicious!

Aria’s gloves were just a bit too big!

Zoe Knight decorated her biscuits with blue icing.

Life Education Van Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have had visits to the Life Education van this week. Kial and Harold delivered important health lessons to all year groups. The lessons covered a range of areas including; taking care of our bodies, making positive decisions, growing good friendships and being cyber wise. Students enjoyed the hands-on learning and working outside of the classroom environment as well as meeting Healthy Harold, which many parents would remember from their childhood. Students were able to purchase merchandise from the van during lunch breaks, the favourites being the handballs and the small soft giraffe toys.

Kindergarten got to meet Kial’s friend Tam who taught us

about vital organs inside our bodies.

Aria Bailey couldn’t quite reach the red poster where she

was to put her ears.

Kindergarten loved meeting Healthy Harold for the first time.

Stage 2 Homework Stage 2 have been busy this last fortnight with their homework tasks. Their challenge was to make a vehicle using recycled and reusable items they found around the house. These tasks aim to stretch students’ imaginations and creativeness and the students thoroughly enjoyed sharing their creations with their peers at school. Students across Stage 3 have been looking at ways to reduce their own personal waste and were excited to attempt to build things from materials they found around their homes.

Ada Dunn proudly shares her recycled car that she built with

her father.

Year 6 Exploring Rising Salt Levels While the Middle School Program was operating, Year 6 have enjoyed being back together and participating in a very relevant, close to home, hands on unit in science called ‘Rising Salt’. Students have explored problems of the rising salt levels in our soils and how this is impacting on our environment and local farming practices.

Students designed and ran various experiments to explore the damage caused and researched current farming practices and how they are either hindering or helping the current situation. Students then thought about ways to change their own farming practices to be more sustainable.

Kiarna McCarten and Ella Hollis with the experiment that

looks at whether levels of water will affect plant growth and health.

George Lee and Billy Snape examine how various levels of salt in the water and soil will affect the health and growth of

Fathers’ Day Stall Last Friday, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 walked to the school hall to purchase a Fathers’ Day gift for their dads, pops and grandfathers. There were coffee mugs, stubby holders, key chains and much more for the students to buy for their loved ones. It was an extremely successful stall with almost all the items selling. Thank you to all the parent helpers who assisted with wrapping the gifts and selling them at the stall. We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Fathers’ Day!

Addie and Jim Dawson were very pleased with the gifts they purchased for their dad.

Some Benefits of Regular School Attendance For Students:

The development of skills and attitudes such as self-discipline, punctuality, and being organised will optimise life choices.

Regular attendance leads to making friends and learning how to maintain relationships over a length of time.

Regular attendance leads to learning social skills necessary to live and work with others.

It’s safer at school than on the street.

The more students attend, the more they will learn and the more they will like school.

How many days of school has your child missed this term?

Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term! Jump Rope for Heart is a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program that has been run by the Heart Foundation for 35 years. It’s a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs. Students will be skipping throughout the term in PE lessons and during recess and lunch breaks, to develop their skipping skills and fitness.

Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $75 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work.

Rather than have individual students fundraise for this worthwhile cause, we have decided to fundraise by holding a Jump Off Day at school. We ask that all students wear casual clothes (sensible footwear for skipping please!) and bring a gold coin donation.

We will hold our school Jump Off Day on Thursday 26th

September. This will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills. All classes will be presenting a skipping routine at the CPS Jump Off Day, held in the hall/COLA area on Thursday 26

th September beginning

at 12pm. Family and friends are invited to attend our Jump

Off Day and stay for a BBQ lunch with their child/children afterwards. All money raised will be donated to the Heart Foundation.

BBQ We would appreciate pre-orders for our BBQ. Please fill in the following order form and return it with payment to your child’s teacher. (Cash only please, unfortunately we cannot accept online payments for the BBQ). There will

be tea/coffee and a limited number of extra sausages available on the day.

Jump Rope for Heart BBQ

Number of sausage sandwiches @ $2.50 each

Number of poppers @ $1 each

Number of Zooper Doopers @ 50c each

If you would like to make a donation to the Heart Foundation, please place money in a sealed envelope labelled ‘Heart Foundation’, and hand in to the office. Please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Caffery if you have any questions.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!

Book Busking (Note: change of date for 3/4 Echidna) During the last week of term, providing the weather is agreeable, students will ‘Book Busk’ in the Crookwell main street area. If the weather is inclement and you are unsure as to whether Book Busking will go ahead, please contact the school by phoning 48 321 213 before journeying down the street to support the buskers.

Book Busking occurs when our students read down the street, under the supervision of their class teacher, to showcase their reading skills. Often passers-by make a donation to show their appreciation. The money raised is used to help purchase additional reading resources for the school.

This is a very inspiring activity for all our children. We rely on the support of the community to help our children shine in the spotlight for just a short time. Please drop down the street and support the reading buskers if at all possible. We’d love to see you there!

There have been several reports of children being infested with head lice across district schools. Lice certainly don’t discriminate about who they infest. They are a persistent problem. Please inspect your child’s hair regularly and take immediate action if you find any signs of their presence.

The information below may prove useful and assist with effective treatment:-

The topic of head lice is often a taboo subject and embarrassing when our child gets them, but relax – it has nothing to do with being clean or dirty. Head lice are caught like a common cold is – by being close to someone who has them (or sharing hats or brushes) – so it can happen to any one of us! The good thing is that they aren’t life-threatening and they are easily treated. The first step is to look out for them. As only 50% of children with head lice will itch, it is a good idea to check your child’s hair once a week. Whilst the lice themselves are very small and hard to see, the eggs are more visible as small whitish flecks firmly attached to the hairs, usually quite close to the scalp. If you see these, don’t panic!

The treatment is easy and requires only two important and inexpensive tools: white hair conditioner – any brand and price will do – and a fine tooth comb (available at our local chemists).

Treatment

1. Wash your child’s hair as you usually would, then apply a generous amount of white conditioner to the hair and leave it. 2. Next use the fine-tooth comb to comb through your child’s hair, wiping the comb on white tissue. Check the tissue for dead lice which will look like small brown spots. 3. Continue combing until no more conditioner can be combed out (this may take five minutes or more in a child with long hair) and leave to dry.

The conditioner works by immobilizing and suffocating the head lice. After one treatment your child is considered safe to return to school and have contact with others, but for proven lice eradication this treatment must be repeated every second night for a total of four treatments ( i.e. – over seven days), to immobilize any further lice which may have hatched and prevent the remaining eggs from hatching. You may still see ‘eggs’ in your child’s hair – don’t panic! The glue that the lice use is very sticky and empty egg cases may remain in the hair, growing out as the hair grows, over a period of weeks.

To prevent head lice becoming a problem in your home, a simple solution is to treat your child / children one night a week with white conditioner and fine-tooth comb.

The Tell Them From Me student survey (Term 3, 2019) I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student

feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is attached to the back of this week’s newsletter. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 13

th September.
