CYNTHIA GREIG—TRUE LIKENESS: REPRESENTATIONS AND NATURE MORTECynthia Greig makes images that at first glance don’t look like the photographs they are. Developing a technique that combines color photography with painting and drawing she has created visual hybrids that deconstruct how we see, identify and remember by denying our perceptual expectations of both photography and reality. Join us Tuesday, February 23, for a Coffee @ Ten with Cynthia.

YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL SELFIE PROJECTThe Selfie Project is a celebration of the age-old art of the self-portrait made new. In the age of Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, and a camera on every device, we see “selfies” on a daily basis. The goal of the Selfie Project is to promote age-appropriate, artistic self-expression for students and families in Charlevoix and Emmet counties. Crooked Tree Arts Center is excited to see your artistic take on this now everyday medium. There is no entry fee to participate. Enter online April 12-25. Exhibit and reception April 30.

WILDHEARTED: A FRESH TAKE ON NORTHERN MICHIGAN'S ENVIRONMENTWHEN: March 15-May 14 • OPENING: March 15 • 7:00-9:00 pm

ABOUT: A group of creative professionals and environmentally conscious artists push the boundaries of convention for this contemporary exhibition that’s rooted in the spirit and stewardship of our natural resources. These thirteen emerging artists—all between the ages of 20 and 40—explore topics related to outdoor recreation, exploration, woods, water and the kind of soul-searching that only nature can offer. Featuring installation, mixed media, wood, paint, graphic design, video and photography, viewers will have the chance to experience what so many of us love most about northern Michigan—the wild. Special recognition to guest curators, Dani Knoph and Courtney Michalik.

RAENETTE AND STEVE PALMER

Raenette and Steve Palmer have devoted much of their lives to art. From falling in love with the process and creation of art at young ages, to studying it as students, and teaching others to fall in love with it, too, the Palmers have long supported the arts in their personal lives, within their community, and with Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Their affiliation with the Arts Center began when they moved to Northern Michigan. As the principal in Harbor Springs, Steve’s school was the first to become involved in the Strings Program for elementary students in 2000. Raenette, an elementary teacher in Petoskey, toted a classroom which nurtured both creativity and learning, and she regularly brought her students to see the exhibits as well to participate in educational experiences. Each found a way to connect with the Arts Center by way of introducing the community’s youth to the inspiring opportunities available, just as they were introduced to art at young ages.

Steve grew up with parents who had strong art backgrounds; his father was a writer, as was his mother, who was also a painter. Steve took photography and ceramic classes in high school and college. And now, at this stage in his artistic career, he works in glass, and creates found object fish sculptures. One of Raenette’s earliest art inspirations was Captain Kangaroo, who encouraged viewers to put together an art supply shoebox, so that they could follow along with his art lessons. Raenette found creating artwork to be a fulfilling pursuit, but it was when she started to teach that she realized the importance of sharing her passion. Just like Captain Kangaroo, she passed along the love and appreciation for creating and enjoying art with her students; watching them blossom in their discovery of art. Raenette works in fiber and mosaics, and between the two of them, the Palmer’s vibrant artwork can be seen in 40 galleries nationwide.

Being involved with CTAC has been gratifying for the Palmer’s. They have donated to D’Art for Art for years, and particularly enjoy the Annual Juried Fine Art Exhibitions— a show both have been featured in. Steve’s fantastical fish sculptures give rise to waves of nostalgia as viewers recognize items from the past and discover unique objects being used for fins, eyes, and gills; Raenette’s vivid mosaic creations, a rainbow of colorful hues, showcase everyday items in high-brow formation. Each artist tempts the viewer’s creativity, inviting them to explore the idea of art.

Both Raenette and Steve have many fine memories of CTAC, but for Steve, the complete renovation of the Arts Center tops the list. “I became Chairman of CTAC at the end of the [renovation] process in 2003, and held that role until 2005, which was the same year our current President, Liz Ahrens, was hired.” The Palmer’s have witnessed the growth and changes of CTAC, and have helped make it the organization that it is today. Fond memories aside, and always with the future in mind, they share this sentiment at heart:

“With the merger of CTAC and the Art Center of Traverse City, CTAC is embarking on a challenge as great as the complete remodeling it went through a few years ago. This time CTAC is positioning itself to spread its influence in Northern Michigan and the rest of the state. [We see] this challenge as a wonderful opportunity for CTAC to deepen Northern Michigan’s connection to the arts—supporting and providing opportunities for artists as well as providing artistic experiences for the greater community. The future is CTAC, and the arts are great.”

NEW YEARS EVE AT THE ARTS CENTER

For this ninth celebration, we expanded our cultural corner in downtown Petoskey. It was a carnival type atmosphere with the “Midnight @ 9” celebration moving to Mitchell Street, including stilt walkers, fire poi and LED hula hoopers. Programming was held in the Petoskey District Library with outdoor activities on the library’s labyrinth and CTAC’s Bidwell Plaza. Guests wandered between the buildings with four live music spaces and numerous drop-in crafts and workshops—all provided by CTAC instructors, area artists and organizations including Petoskey District Library and Blissfest Music Organization.

Fred Wurster, an area elementary student, was the featured artis for 2016. His artwork was used for the t-shirts and admission buttons for the event.

New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center is sponsored in part by Moran Iron Works and The L’Arbre Croche fund at Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.

Dear CTAC Members—Networking, collaborating, sharing, partnerships. Here at CTAC we relish an opportunity to work with others. So when we were approached by Ann and Steve Loveless to host their 2015 ArtPrize People’s Choice winning artwork, Northwood Awakening, we jumped at the chance! The 25' x 5' panel is a northern Michigan woodland scene created by Steve, a landscape photographer, and Ann, a textile artist. CTAC will exhibit the stunning creation beginning April 1 through May 20. This is your chance to see an ArtPrize entry in Petoskey!

PS: Put these dates on your calendar as Ann will lecture and teach for CTAC this fall! - Tuesday, November 1: Coffee @ 10 in Petoskey- Saturday, November 5: Workshop in Traverse City
