Critchlow Adkins Children’s CentersBuilding Brighter Futures
2015-16ANNUAL REPORT
2015-2016 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
My career as a Pediatrician focused
on children’s physical health. Upon
retirement, I was pleased to have
the opportunity to help steward this
valuable organization devoted to
helping children develop healthy brains.
Learning experiences in early childhood
are critical for optimal social and
intellectual growth. Without appropriate
stimulation, the brain pathways of
children atrophy and intellectual
potential is permanently lost.
Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers (CACC) prides itself on a commitment to quality care and
education. Our teachers are certified, all five sites are accredited, and all have earned the
highest quality ranking score from the Maryland Department of education.
Our entire community benefits from CACC’s services. The availability of a dependable, safe,
caring environment where children are learning, developing appropriate skills, and having
fun allows parents to pursue their educational and career goals. This maximizes parents’
opportunities for successful, rewarding careers and family lives. There is also an important
secondary benefit for their employers and work colleagues. If one’s nanny or babysitter is
sick, the parent has to say home, which places a burden on co-workers. If a CACC caregiver
is ill, the staff shifts to fill in so the parent needn’t stay home. Finally, many CACC graduates
remain in Talbot County and provide essential services to all of us. This becomes particularly
critical as our population ages.
Please help CACC continue to help our community. Providing quality early childhood
education is expensive. We need your support to keep fees affordable for young families in
need of our services. It is an important investment in the health of Talbot County.
Thank you for being a friend of CACC.

White Marsh Site Receives MSDE Acccreditation
Cheryl Willis, Site Director, White Marsh, left and Ann Atkinson, right, celebrate their accreditation announcement with several of their students.
Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers (CACC) White Marsh Site was recently awarded accreditation by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This voluntary accreditation follows a rigorous process of self-study, document prepara-tion, program enhancement, verification by early childhood education professionals, and a final review by MSDE. Accredi-tation is valid for a three-year period.
“Our team, led by White Marsh Site Director Cheryl Willis, worked very hard to achieve this important achievement. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication to build bright-er futures and touch the lives of children and their families each day,” says Kris George, CACC’s Executive Director. “Re-search continues to shows the direct link between the quality of a child’s early childhood setting and their success in school and in life and we are proud to be able to provide such a quali-ty school age program for the families we serve.”
MSDE accreditation is reserved for exceptional early childhood and school age programs that substantially exceed minimum state licensing requirements. Parents seeking care and educa-tion for their young children can use accreditation as a means of locating the highest quality programs. As a MSDE accredited program, CACC has maintained its place among a select group of early childhood education centers statewide distinguished by their quality, their commitment to young children, and their dedication to excellence.

As part of CACC’s 45th Birthday, we honored two of our longtime volunteers, Adrienne Rudge & Bill Lane for their service to the organization.

Left, Members of CACC’s Board of Directors hosted an annual Staff Appreciation last October as a way to thank our teachers and staff for their hard work and commitment to our children! The event was held in the fellowship hall of Trinity Cathedral. Center, Judy Gaston, RN, of the Eastern Shore Oral Health Education & Outreach Center, travels to each of our five sites annually to talk to our children about dental health. Right, School Age Site Assistant Site Director, Keieve Colbert postes with participants of the site’s annual Tricky Tray fundraiser held last May. The event raised over $900 for new summer program materials!
CACC Celebrates 45th BirthdayIt’s a story 45 years in the making that started simply enough. Two women, Happy Critchlow and Janice Adkins, saw a need in our community to provide quality childcare for working families in Talbot County. Their vision – which began with eight children and two staff in borrowed classrooms at St. Marks United Methodist Church, has now grown into a fully accredited program serving approximately 450 children at five sites throughout Talbot County.
Mrs. Critchlow and Mrs. Adkins weren’t trying to be pioneers when they set out to fill this void - but their passion and commitment to affordable, quality childcare for the working families of Talbot County
has enriched the lives of nearly 10,000 children – now going on three generations worth. At the heart of all of CACC’s programs is a fully accredited program – recognized by the state as being the top level of child developm ent programming – aimed at assuring that each child receives all the tools he or she needs to be at the head of the class when they go to school.
The services CACC provides are just as much for moms, dads and other caregivers as they are for the children in our care. Parents can go to work focused on their own work, knowing that their children are in a safe, nurturing learning environment with teachers who love them. Through our tuition assistance program – usually around $125,000 annually - we are able to help families help themselves.
Tuition assistance that assures that all families can access our quality programs was at the forefront of our founding mother’s mission – and will remain a commitment for the future members of the Critchlow Adkins family. Program enhancements to help each of our children be the best they can be – is there any more important investment? Their future is – simply stated - our future.
We are closing the achievement gap for our at risk children by providing an affordable, quality learning experience for children and peace of mind for their families to continue to work or further their educations.
With your help, we will continue to do this important work for many years to come. Thank you for helping us reach 45 years - and for helping us to write the next chapter of the Critchlow Adkins story – full of happy kids and healthy families.

To say that CACC has an amazingly talented and committed group of managers is an understatement at best.
