» In the bedroom:Wake up the way yourroom looks with aneasy-to-make head-board. Have a sheet ofplywood cut to thebed’s width and about48 inches high. Wrap

the plywood with quiltbatting and then stapleon a colorful fabric, such as an extra flatsheet that coordinateswith the rest of yourbedding, wrapping it tothe back. Screw theheadboard to the wall, hiding the screws atthe bottom behind thebed.

A quick, easy way tomake your bed lookmore luxurious andinviting is to add avariety of pillows indifferent shapes, sizesand textures. To bright-

If you or someone youlove snores, the causecould be obstructivesleep apnea (OSA). Infact, it’s estimated that 22million Americans sufferfrom sleep apnea, and ashigh as 90 percent ofthose don’t even know it,according to the Amer-ican Sleep Apnea Associa-tion. But in addition tobeing annoying, OSA, ifleft untreated, can causeor aggravate serioushealth problems:

» Hypertension orheart problems – Repeat-ed, sudden drops in bloodoxygen levels duringsleep apnea increaseblood pressure and strainthe heart. And if you haveunderlying heart disease, these multiple episodes oflow blood oxygen canlead to sudden death froma heart attack.

» Fatigue/accidents –Although you don’t real-ize you’re waking upseveral times each night, your body knows. Every

time you stop breathing, your body “wakes up,” soyou never enter the rest-ful period of the sleepcycle for any length oftime. The end result isextreme daytime fatigue. And research has shownthat people with sleepapnea are nine timesmore likely to have motorvehicle accidents.

» Depression – In astudy in The Journal ofClinical Psychiatry, thepercentage of total re-spondents with OSA was4.6 percent, and of thatgroup, 4.3 percent alsohad major depression.

» Diabetes – OSA isassociated with impairedfasting glucose, glucoseintolerance and type 2diabetes

Dr. Timothy J. Kitzmil-ler, DDS, possesses akeen understanding ofthe hazards of OSA be-cause he has it. In fact, hestarted Cincinnati DentalSleepMedicine as anextension of his dental

practice because hedidn’t like wearing thecontinuous positive air-way pressure (CPAP)mask when sleeping. (ACPAPmask is the mostcommon treatment forOSA.) His solution: anoral appliance that fitsover your teeth and holdsthe lower jaw forwardwhile you sleep, keepingthe airway open.

Dr. Kitzmiller’s pa-tients who have had asimilar reaction to theCPAPmachine receivedimmediate relief with theoral appliance. “I went toDr. Kitzmiller because Icouldn’t tolerate CPAP.The oral appliance hasdrastically improved mylife. I sleep better, havemuch more energy, andmuch less depression.Gratefully, the ‘new’ JudyG.”

With all the TV shows, magazines and websitesdevoted to decorating, people are bombardedwith so much home de-sign advice that it can beoverwhelming. The de-sign team at Best Furni-ture Gallery in FortThomas, Ky., takes a lookat the top interior designmistakes homeownersmake and offers somesimple tips on how to fix(or avoid) them.

»Not using color andlight properly

Color and light havethe biggest impact on howa room looks and feels, yet many people may bereluctant to paint because

they’re afraid of choosingthe wrong color, or theyuse only light colors to“make the room lookbigger.” According toCarolynn Reis, who ownsBest with husband Craig,“Your home should re-flect you and the colorsyou love. And you’re notadding any square foot-age by keeping thosewalls beige.”

Striking colors areexciting and dramatic,

and they pull togethersmaller elements in yourroom. If the idea of aroomful of color is stilltoo much, try accent walls(using only one or twowalls for your color state-ment).

Similarly, pay attentionto lighting. For mostrooms an overhead lightisn’t enough. “Properlighting is one of the mostimportant elements ininterior decorating be-

cause it helps set themood and activity in theroom. Not enough lightcan be depressing andbulbs that are too brightare harsh and glaring,”said Carolynn.

Try to incorporate asmuch natural light aspossible – it’s upliftingand warming. Then con-sider the different activ-ities (reading, playinggames, doing homework, paying bills, etc.) that willoccur in each area, anddon’t be afraid to usemultiple interior lights.“Floor lamps, table lampsand dimmers can giveyou more lighting options,as well as the ability to

change the mood of theroom for different occa-sions,” said Craig Reis.

»Weakwindow treat-ments

Window treatmentsare an easy and inexpen-sive way to put the fin-ishing touch on a room, when they’re done right.A couple of commonmis-takes to avoid are hanginghardware too low, andbuying the wrong-sizedwindow treatments forthe intended space. Hang-ing the hardware too lowwill result in bringing theroom down andmakingthe ceilings look lowerthan they really are. “Asimple trick is to mountyour hardware 6-10 inch-es above the window to letmore light into the roomandmake your ceilingsappear higher,” explainedBest design consultantand window treatmentspecialist Linda Barbian.

» Floating rugsArea rugs add texture

and warmth and tie to-gether various elementsof the room. But center-ing a rug that is too smallruins the effect and looksout of place.

“Rugs should be largeenough for all of the fur-niture to sit on top, orsmall enough for the fur-niture to frame the rug,”said Alma Rohrer, long-time design consultantwith Best. Alma addedthat, “In all my years inthis industry, I have neverseen more area rugs be-ing sold than I do today.”

» Furniture thatdoesn’t fit

Toomuch furnituremakes a room seemcrowded, but too littleseems boring and unin-viting. The idea is to findthe right balance.

While the NationalAssociation of HomeBuilders finds that homeremodeling is at its high-est level since 2005,homeowners are stillbeing understandablycautious with their in-vestments. It’s a growing trend:Twenty-one millionhouseholds are plantingcontainer gardens. Itsaves space, helps con-trol pests and overcomesoil issues, and lets youenjoy fresh, homegrownproduce even without ayard.

To ensure your suc-cess, it’s important topick the right plant forthe pot. Fortunately, seed companies are de-veloping vegetable seedswell adapted for contain-er gardens.

“Today’s containergardeners now haveaccess to even moreplants that are compactin size, yield more, tastegreat and feature uniquecolors and shapes,” saidJohn Marchese of Semi-nis Home Garden seed.

To help you get start-ed, consider these tipsfrom experts at the Uni-versity of Illinois Exten-sion:

CHOOSING ACONTAINER

» Anything that holdssoil and has drainageholes in the bottom maybe transformed into acontainer garden forterrestrial plants.

» For vibrant plantgrowth, the containersmust provide adequatespace for roots and soilmedia, allowing the plantto thrive.

Soil» Soils for containers

need to be well-aerated

and well-drained, whilestill being able to retainenough moisture forplant growth.

» Never use gardensoil by itself for con-tainer gardening, nomatter how good itlooks or how wellthings grow in it out-side.

» Containers often

use soilless or artificialmedia that contain nosoil at all.

» When these mixesare used, they shouldbe moistened slightlybefore planting. Fill atub with the media, addwater and lightly fluffthe media to dampen it.

CONTAINERGARDENING:Choosing the rightplant for the pot

CARING FOR YOUR VEGETABLES» Containers offer the advantage of being portable.

As the seasons, temperature and light conditionschange, you can move your containers so they enjoy thebest conditions for peak performance.»Most fruit-bearing vegetables such as tomatoes,

peppers, cucumbers, squashes and eggplant require fullsun.» Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and spin-

ach can tolerate more shady locations, unlike rootvegetables such as radishes, carrots and onions.» There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to

watering. You have to watch your containers and un-derstand howmuch moisture each plant needs. Feel thesoil – if the first inch or so is dry, add water until it startsto drip out of the drainage holes.

Special Seeds“Just because they are using a smaller space to grow

the plant doesn’t mean the fruit has to be small, too,”said John Marchese of Seminis Home Garden seed. “Forexample, if container gardeners are looking for a com-pact plant that produces large and tasty tomatoes, theyshould try a new hybrid tomato variety called Debut.”Container gardeners don’t have to sacrifice flavor for

a more conveniently grown plant either. “Husky Red is amedium-sized tomato hybrid that has great flavor. Wehave also developed a cherry tomato hybrid versioncalled Husky Cherry Red that has the potential to setlots of sweet, flavorful fruit,” added Marchese.Other compact hybrid tomato varieties include Patio,

which produces about a 4-ounce tomato, and a sal-adette tomato variety called Yaqui that produces large-sized fruit.

Talk to any contempo-rary architect, remodeler, interior designer orhomeowner, and you’llfind one of the hot topicsthese days is “flow.” Goneare the days of floor plansburdened by closed-off,claustrophobic rooms, each designed aroundspecific functions.

“Today’s new homesand home remodelingprojects embrace farmore open designs, allow-ing for unprecedentedlevels of flexibility. Thesefloor plans permit gather-ings to spill out of thedining room, family roomor living room into ad-joining spaces with noloss of sociability, or takeon a welcome aura ofprivacy when needed,”says Michael Myers, marketing director forJohnson Hardware, man-ufacturers of pocket, sliding and bifold doorhardware. They also en-able interior spaces toserve new purposes witheach new day. The resultis a new kind of American

home, one where roomsassume different person-alities as occasions andspatial requirementschange.

Sliding doors are thesmart designer’s answerin creating openness with-in spaces that can’t ac-commodate hinged, swinging interior doors. In today’s homes, slidingdoors have been given aliterally and figurativelylarger role in room deco-rating. They can glideinto place to create wallsbetween rooms, or easilyglide back out if wide-open spaces absent ofwalls are desired.

“Consider, for in-stance, the value of slid-ing doors during the holi-day entertaining season.Large family gatheringsmay require adding a leafor two to the dining roomtable, making that diningarea a trifle too confining.A wall of sliding doorscan expand the diningroom into the family

It’s going to be a busyseason for roofers. Be-cause of record winds, rainfall and accumulat-ing snow, “many roofs inthe area are failing,”explained J. D. Shoemak-er of A New Rooftime.

In the current econo-my, there’s a movementby homeowners to “im-prove, not move,” mean-ing more people arechoosing to invest intheir house by addingattic insulation and re-placing their roofs. Inaddition to the beautyand comfort these type ofimprovements create, homeowners also receivethe added benefit of im-proved property valueshould they ever decideto sell.

At Rooftime, springhas sprung and the roof-ers are working everydry day, while the estima-tors have been busy pre-paring new estimatessince the first of the year.Rooftime stays busyyear-round due to theirapproved insurance ven-dor status. In addition,Rooftime had a booth inthe recent Home andGarden Show, where theysigned up more than 100new bid requests.

Rooftime is a wisechoice for homeownerslooking for honest, skilled work. They haveearned the prestigiousAngie’s List award everyyear since 2006. Fewerthan 5 percent of theroofing companies inCincinnati receive theaward; fewer than 2 per-cent win it with consis-tency. Rooftime’s A-plusrating as members of theBBB and complaint-freerecord prove that home-owners can trust them todo everything they prom-ise. “It is our No. 1 priori-ty to always do the rightthing by our customers,”said Shoemaker.

Rooftime is also one of

only three contractors inthe Tristate that are Ow-ens Corning-certified as“Top of the House” in-sulation-ventilation-roof-ing experts. “We exclu-sively recommend andinstall the Owens Cor-ning line of products,”explained Shoemaker.“Homeowners know andtrust the OC brand, plus, the quality, price andselection are second toanything else out there.”

Rooftime crews arerequired to always be upto date on the newestproducts, technology andcodes, through company-paid seminars and certifi-cations annually conduct-ed by Owens Corning.

The company also usesqualified estimators whodo not work on commis-

sion. This ensures thatthe customer alwaysreceives an honest esti-mate.

“We’re not the biggestcompany,” said Shoemak-er. “There are some thathave been around longer, some that are cheaper, and some that may befaster, but there is notone that will match thelevel of detail or workharder for their custom-ers than Rooftime.”

Most roofers can onlybe reached weekdays 9 to5. However, storms hap-pen on nights, weekendsand holidays. “If youneed us, we’re here,”explained Shoemaker.“We know if someone iscalling it means theyneed help, so we forwardour office lines to an

emergency cellphone tobe available around-the-clock.”

Rooftime providesfree written estimatesand will explain whatthey can do to fix ahome’s issues.

Services include newroofs, roof repairs, atticinsulation and skylightrepairs. They are alsobox gutter experts andlove working on olderhomes. Their use of digi-tal cameras, satellitemeasurements and athermal camera allowsthem to provide to-the-inch measurements forto-the-penny pricing.

» When filling con-tainers with media, don’tfill the pot to the top.Leave about a one-inchspace between the top ofthe soil and rim of thepot.

Fertilizer» A regular fertilizer

program is needed tokeep plants growingattractively all season.

» The choice of fertil-izer analysis will dependon the kinds of plantsyou grow. High-nitrogensources would be good

for plants grown fortheir foliage, whileflowering and vegeta-ble crops would gener-ally prefer lower-nitro-gen and higher-phos-phorous fertilizertypes.
