Listing out the little annoying things that happen in our everyday lives, which we create band-aid solutions for, or even ignore.

Images on the right are some “band-aid” solutions people around the world use and share as, “life hacks and daily living tips”. Some are ridiculous, some actually allow you to be resourceful with your left-over materials. They are just fun to look through.

I came across an article I read about a successful ice cream cooler, Meltdown Analyzer TC 1, in which they did tests to check how fast it melts. In order to examine this process better, they used a perforated surface to see the outcome directly. I wanted to use this method to build up a level of excitement and enthusiasm about the ice-cream melting.

From strainers to drains, I was thinking about the different ways people might perceive a drain on something that we eat. Playing with the irony of what a drain is normally used for, and what it would be used as in the concept I’m pursuing to develop.

(______)Strategy: Pattern Breaking

Design a blindfold for an Art Center fundraiser event: “The blindfolds should be sensual and elegant. The dinner’s theme has an Indian and Moroccan influence, please use those for inspiration. Design them to be unisex as they will be worn by both women and men. Hopefully more than once.”

INITIAL IDEAS Brainstorming

F E B R UARY 2015

Given the type of dessert the guests will be serving, and the theme of the dinner party, I was looking which aspects of the challenge I need to keep in mind, and don’t need to really consider.

Thinking of activities or situations where blindfolds / bandanas could be used in not in the conventional ways. I wanted to sell the endless possibilities what the bandana can provide. Whether it comes handy in a no toilet paper situation or during camping.

F E B R UARY 2015

IDEATIONConcept Development I want to make the blindfold memorable, so the guests will want to take it home, giving it

a new purpose in life- other than just covering someone’s eyes, or used as a bandana. So, I decided to give them names which allows people to picture the scene they would use the bandana as _____. This will make them think about whole new ways to utilize the bandana.

THREE MAGIC POTIONSStrategy: Gift as an artform

Using the collection as a starting point for inspiration, create a unique gift for the person that you have been assigned. Consider meaningfulness, longevity and usefulness in the conceptual development of this project. Ben was selected to be my gift receiver. As a ‘secret santa’ I was asked to prepare a “priceless gift” based on the collections Ben brought that described him. Ben is a 24 year-old graphic design student at Art Center. His work reflects simplicity, and graceful organization through typography. The objects below are his collections:

To add to the tea experience, I wanted to include a jar of coffee beans for triggering motiva-tion and inspiration. Which then inspired me to add a small bottle of wine for celebration after he finished his work. This could be a possible addition to the ritual Ben can embed!

HINAMATSURIStrategy: Vision Calibration

Calibrate the bission of Hinamatsuri (by bringing it to the U.S.) Design the artifacts and symbols that will be used to celebrate this new national holiday. This strategy is about setting my own personal “North”, and only doing things that gets closer to the goal. It requires recalibrating my routes according to reaching the set goal.

“Girl’s Day”, also called “Doll’s Day” is a holiday celebrated in Japan to pray for their daughters’ future happiness and growth. This holiday was originated during the Heian period when they believed dolls possessed power to contain bad spirits. It is influenced by two main traditions - hina-nagashi (doll floating), and hina-ningyo (dolls passed down from generation). Usually paper dolls and 3+ layered rice cakes are put into a basket to float away the ‘bad spirits’.

New I wanted to keep the same colors but create new meanings. Girls will be required to wear white before the ceremony/festival, where they will be painted with green, pink, and red paint.

Page 40: Creative Strategies Work Sample

Each girl receives a plain wooden doll, which she gets to decorate, draw, and paint to portray herself in the future. Through this activity, which will be done with her parents, she will get to think about who she wants to become, why, and how she will become her future self. This doll is supposed to represent how she sees herself.

Every girl is required to wear white clothing to the festival, which will be covered with pink, red, and green paint later after their doll making part of the ceremony. She is required to go through an obstacle course that she will journey through alone. At the end of the obstacle course, she will celebrate for being ready to become a stronger woman with her power, beauty, and heart to love.

This part of the tradition is done during the night time, after the sun sets, and when everyone is hungry for treats. During this time, the family shares and even trade snacks with other families. The ceremony of burning the paper blossoms concludes the holiday, as it represents sending the girl’s dreams to heaven (to God) as a prayer. The papers are shaped as peach blossoms to represent growth, long-life, and prosperity.

I wanted to create a modern, and friendly representation of the holiday. It should be able to reflect the fun, and creative activities the festival holds for strong girls who are going to become strong women. Most importantly, the festival logo should reflect the the origin of the traditions, and culture the holiday was born in. I was in search for fonts that have a bold, yet friendly statement and feel.

MARKET INTERVIEWCollege Students We interviewed our friends, and used ourselves to question, as we ourselves, were our target

market. College students usually compromise their desires, and health by relying on vending machine food. Mainly due to lack of time, they always find themselves in front of the machine.

MARYANN CHI (21)Always working at school where only options are cafeteria and vending machines unless driving out to buy food, which wastes time and energy. However, when working late at night, nothing’s open and wants something substantial and wholesome

INGRID BENITEZ (22)Works full time at the while going to school full time with no car. She is also training for marathons throughout the year. Unless her mom cooks a solid meal, relies on vending machines, school food, and whatever fast food is near her next bus stop throughout day.

ARTHUR CASAS (21)He is on the wrestling team at school and constantly trains year-round. Works part time at the YMCA where he trains when not at the school gym. Needs to be conscious of diet, but as a young guy is constantly hungry. Avoids vending machines despite cheap price due to lack of nutrition.

USER SCENARIOMary, college student

Today, she has class from 2pm until 7:50pm and a class that starts at 8pm immediately afterwards. Right before the teacher dismisses her she is already in a rush to get to her next class.

She runs to her class and she sees Greg. “Hi! Greg!”

On the way to class, she sees a vending machine. She stops and stares at the vending machine for a while to decide on her snack. 5 minutes later, she is still staring at the machine with no clue what to buy.

Then, she sees CREATE. Create provides unseasoned snacks that can be flavored to Mary’s desired taste. If Mary has a hard time figuring out what to get, CREATE can randomly create a customized snack for her instead.

Mary hurries to create her own custom snack instead of going for the randomly chosen option by picking her main ingredient and seasoning flavors.

Next day, she comes back to CREATE. She brought the empty packaging used in yesterday’s CREATE snack. She feeds the bag into the slot so that CREATE can reuse it to package her new snack. Plus, she gets 25 cents off as an incentive.

Pick a wall at Art Center and create a “typical” portfolio review. It should have the same proportion and elements that we are accustomed to. CONCEPT GENERATIONInitial Brainstorm We approached from two different ways to go about this project. Choosing a specific place

that could be used from the Art Center halls, or choosing a perspective that we’d want see the ‘review’ from.

Page 71: Creative Strategies Work Sample

Dog’s POV We decided to look into this review as a dog. We felt that it may be generic, however we were

challenged by how we would execute each pieces to be relatable to many people since there are a handful of dog-lovers in the general population everywhere.

We decided to imagine what artworks Joey would create if he was a student majoring in Illustration and photography. Joey is Mia’s little buddy, who she adopted from him from the pound, a year ago. The photos were edited to imagine viewing with a dog’s range of color sensibility. At this point, we started thinking about what would be considered a “masterpiece”. A wrecked piece of furniture? A skinned stuffed animal, with its inside all over the floor? A new, chewy pair of Nike sneakers?

THE ENDReflection

TO BE CONTINUED...

These strategies are going to be a part of the tools, and ‘vision-filters’ that I have gathered, and am still in the process of collecting. As a developing designer, I also want to be able to apply these strategies to my life -- daily habits, and lifestyle, more aggressively.

Looking back at my approaches, and thoughts behind each decision-making points, I saw a connection between my personality and the strategies I enjoyed using the most. As for the ones I struggled with, the reasons may be fear, hesitation, or even laziness. However, I think it all comes down to what my habits are; Where, and how did they become habits?

I have a good mix of some positive, and negative habits, just like ev-eryone else. However, I don’t think I value my positive factors enough, since I always end up focusing more on whatever I think is a flaw. I am now trying to to use these strategies in my daily life to stop falling into patterns of things, and to search for the right questions beneath layers of complex ideas.

Overall, Creative Strategies is one of the few classes I would happily to recommend to those who are in search for something challenging + fun. I was able to appreciate the level of variety in all of our creative interpretations from the identically written prompt.
