Peer Support TrainingOn Wednesday 10 August Year 9 students from both Ballina High School and Southern Cross School K-12 attended a leadership workshop which was held at Dunes on Shelley Beach. The purpose of this workshop was to help prepare these students for upcoming leadership roles. The workshop included three main focus points:Resilience, Collaboration and Facilitating. These three values will help the peer leaders give a good example to the Year 7’s coming to the school next year. The day started off with “icebreaker” games to get to know one another. Then the students were put into three groups to participate in the three workshops in rotation.Overall the students had a great experience and are looking forward to positive interactions with the 2017 Year 7 group.

DebatingOur Year 7 and 8 Debating team went to Alstonville High School to debate the topic 'That we should ban beauty pageants'. They put forward some well thought out ideas including the fact that we all have the right to choose what we participate in. Unfortunately, Alstonville were able to present more fleshed out ideas and won the debate.

Changes to Sick Bay NotificationWe have introduced a text messaging system to advise parent/carers when students are to be collected from school due to illness. To ensure students well-being is foremost, if we do not receive a reply to the text message in a timely manner, or if the matter is urgent, we will phone and speak with you.It is important that mobile phone contact details are kept updated.

New School UniformsThe designs for the new school uniform are progressing. A big thank you to the hard working members of the uniform committee. We are now asking for feedback on the designs. If you would like to have a say please click on the links below. For Boys:https://goo.gl/forms/XtAPqjDmlwBWGKJM2For Girls:https://goo.gl/forms/9DYcpTlVJ4pYwwxL2Students in Years 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 will complete a survey separately during school time.Pictured above are some options for the 7-12 girls uniforms.

Congratulations to a number of students and staff this week: our Year 12 who completed HSC Trials, ably organised by Donna Ryan, to our Year 10 who played in the snow, organised by Jesse Coates and our other Year 10 work experience, organised by Donna Ryan. Thank you to Mrs Edwards and Mr Rhodes who interviewed students for 2017 School Captains.Last week I attended a funeral for a woman in Temora who supported Public Education for over 25 yeras, both as a parent and as a member of SASS. Her funeral was a celebration of her impact on students. She co-directed musicals, organised Year 12 Farewells and assemblies and was a Secretary of the local football club.

Next week we celebrate the work of SASS (School Administrative and Support Staff) in our schools. Whether they be teacher’s aides, general assistants or office staff - we cannot do without them. Everyone has the opportunity to have a positive impact on our students; the bus driver who greets them each day, the friends parents who check on them, the canteen workers, their teachers, their friends - we need to look after each other. This week we have rolled out surveys on choices for the new uniforms. Please take the time to have your say.Have a great fortnight. Janeen Silcock.

In memory of Sybil HouseFor many years Mrs Sybil House gave two hours every week to hear K-6 students read. As a community reading volunteer she rarely missed her day. Even when she could no longer drive her car, she would arrive by mobility scooter, even when raining.Sybil worked along side me for the past two years and we had many a chat, about all sorts of things. On behalf of the students and staff of Southern Cross School K-12, I would like to extend our sympathies to Sybil’s family, especially daughter Kate Lee who taught at this high school. Sybil will be sadly missed.Chris Porter, K-6 Learning and Support Teacher.

On Thursday 4 August, the Southern Cross School K-12 primary debating team had a debate against the Lennox Head debating team. We had a great time debating on the topic 'Primary school students should / shouldn't have a one day a week job'. Our team was against the idea. We had a lot of fun and our audience was wonderful. Congratulations to the winning team... Lennox Head. A special thank you to Mr Christie. By Michelle Schlenker 5/6F

Music OpportunityA group of senior students visited Griffith University in Qld to investigate more about the Popular Music Course and to attend a workshop where they wrote and recorded their own songs in the University recording studios. Two groups each wrote and recorded a song in 4 hours. The students thought this experience was valuable and most enjoyable.

Teams of students each representing a different country, participated in games modified from Olympic events. We were grateful for a wonderful day of sunshine which contributed to an enjoyable day of events for all students and family members who attended. Funds raised will go towards resources for K-6 students. The total raised so far is over $2,000 which will increase as sponsorship is still being collected.A huge thank you to Mrs Faulks and her many helpers for all the effort they put into organising and setting up this great day!

Australia’s Biggest Collector? The Australian Childrens Television Foundation interviewed Joe Marshall, Yr 12, about being one of Australias biggest childrens TV merchandise collectors. His first memories of collecting came from an accumulation of Thomas the Tank Engine toys that he had as a child.Joseph says the most important part of his collection does not come from the quantity or value of pieces, but from the items that hold the most sentimentality.Joseph shows no signs of slowing down his search for rare TV items. He plans to continue collecting, and to inspire others to do the same. Please have a look at the article from this link.http://actf.com.au/news/10294/is-this-australia-s-biggest-kids-tv-collector
