Joe & Laverne Greenwood “It was Like at First Sight”

Joe Greenwood was born in Detroit in April of 1929, the youngest of four children. Laverne was born the oldest of 11, in

Milwaukee in 1926, and it was in Milwaukee where the two met on a Sunday in 1945. “I was up from the Great Lakes with a buddy for a visit.”

at first sight, but it was ‘Like’. When I saw him again, I knew why I had kept writing.” Through the years,

Laverne stayed with nursing; always in labor and delivery. He worked first for Hudson Motors,

followed by what he calls “lots of jobs.” They raised 4 children; 2 sons, and 2 daughters. They have 2 grandchildren.

They live in a little cabin on a quiet lake; a cabin Joe used to visit with a friend of his. “Then he bought a place down the way. His brother wanted

to buy this cabin, but his wife said ‘no’. So, we bought it! We borrowed against our life savings to do it, and paid all of $4200 for it! That was 27 years ago,” Joe said. “We don’t have a lot, but we’re living a good life.”

“He makes me laugh,” said Laverne. “You know, he always told me he was a saint, and then I had ovarian cancer and

he took care of

me. He took care of the house, He took care of everything.” She smiled at her husband. “He wasn’t lying. He’s had to put up with a lot.” “I sure do!” Joe

exclaimed. “She’s bossy. She makes lists for me.” But he’s smiling as he says it.

Last March, Joe had a heart attack

requiring triple by-pass surgery. And then Laverne

needed a pacemaker, and they ended up in the hospital at the same time. “They put us in the same room,” Laverne said, “and they pushed our beds close together.” The two, married 68 years now, share the kind of smile with each other that comes only from decades of partnership and love.

Joe continues to pursue his hobby of building little boats, and Laverne makes dolls and does other crafts. They

read. They play euchre. “She learned to drive when she was 64,” Joe said. “That’s when she learned all her cuss words. Then she got on Facebook and learned

some more!” As Ken Wright snapped yet another

photo of the two, Joe quipped, “Oh Good! This will be a good one for our obituary!”

Laverne laughed until tears came, gripping his hand. They laugh a lot. His dry wit and her effervescent chatter seem to prove that their friendship is the tie that binds them.

“That’s the secret,” said Laverne. “That’s the secret.”

From Bob Simpson, District Manager

Traverse City Social Security Office

ROSIE THE RIVETER:

WORKING WOMEN’S ICON “Rosie the Riveter” is an American

icon representing women working in

factories during World War II. These

women learned new jobs and filled in for

the men who were away at war. They

produced much of the armaments and

ammunition to supply the war effort.

They also paid FICA on their wages,

contributing to the Social Security

program. These “Rosies” embodied the

“can-do” spirit immortalized in a poster

by J. Howard Miller. Both the image and

the spirit live on today.

If you asked Rosie about Social

Security, she would use her rivet gun to

drive home the value of Social Security

for women. More Rosies work today, and

nearly 60 percent of people receiving

benefits are women. Women tend to live

longer than men, so Social Security’s

inflation-adjusted benefits help protect

women. You can outlive your savings and

investments, but Social Security is for

life. Women provide their own basic level

of protection when they work and pay

taxes into the Social Security system.

Women who have been married and had

low earnings or who didn’t work may be

covered through their spouses’ work.

Today’s Rosie will turn her “can-do”

spirit to learning more about Social

Security and what role it will play in her

financial plan for the future. She focuses

on our pamphlet called What Every

Woman Should Know available at

www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10127.html

for a game plan.

She rolls up her sleeves and sets up

her my Social Security account

(www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount) to

review her earnings and estimates. If she

finds an incorrect posting, she’ll locate

her W-2 form and quickly contact Social

Security to correct it because she

understands these are the earnings used to

figure her benefits.

She dives into understanding benefits

at our planner pages at

www.socialsecurity.gov/planners. She

examines how marriage, divorce, death of

a spouse, work, and other issues might

affect her benefits. She studies our fact

sheet When to Start Receiving Retirement

Benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/

to help her decide when it’s time to lay

down the rivet gun. And when the time is

right, she will file for retirement benefits

online at www.socialsecurity.gov/retire.

Whether it was keeping the war effort

production lines humming or discovering

what is available to her from Social

Security, Rosie symbolizes the motto:

“We Can Do It.” Rosie and millions like

her rely on the financial protection

provided by Social Security in

assembling their own financial futures.

SENIOR

CENTER

DINING New Times,

New changes

With the hire of our new Nutrition Manager, Dale VanVliet, we are slowly transitioning to a new style of serving in our Senior Center Dining. We are taking baby steps with this process and hope that you’ll share your feedback along the way. Currently, all participants are now being served in the dining room vs. standing in line to get food. We hope you enjoy this increased customer service in a more restaurant type atmosphere.

Effective February 5th, we will take the next step and increase our serving time from 15 minutes to 1 hour. Lunch will be ready and served from 11:30am-12:30pm and dinner will be served from 4:30pm-5:30pm. We hope this will allow guests more access to our meal program. As this transition takes place we will also be transitioning back to plated food instead of the trays currently used.

In the near future, we will upgrading our menus, adding creative options and offering more food choices. Would you like a menu of items to choose from? Would you like to make your own entrée salad? What healthy items would you like to see added to the menu? Interested in a small salad and wrap option for the summer? We need to hear from you! We will be having a couple of “foodie” group meetings in February to gather your input.

• Tuesday, Feb 20th at 3:30pm • Friday, Feb 23rd at 10:30am All of these transitions are happening

across the country in Congregate meal programs to increase participation especially with Baby Boomers. Throughout this transition, we will continue to look for ways to “enhance” the dining experience while also serving healthy meals.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE DISENROLLMENT PERIOD

People on Medicare who have Prescription Drug Plans or Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are familiar with the Open Enrollment period. This period extends from October 15th to December 7th each year. People have the option of changing plans during this period. There is, however, another period for people with Medicare Advantage plans to disenroll from those plans and return to original Medicare. This period starts on January 1st and extends until February 14th. During this time, the person may leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. The person may also, during this time, join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. The new plan coverage will begin on the first day of the month after the plan gets your enrollment request. During this special period you can’t:

1) switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan,

2) switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another,

3) switch from one Medicare Prescription drug plan to another or,

4) join, switch, or drop a Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan.

There are a few other circumstances in which a person may be able to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan. These would be:

1) moving out of your plan’s service area, 2) if you have Medicaid, 3) if you qualify for Extra Help or, 4) if you live in an institution (such as a

nursing home). There is one other circumstance which may be available. All Medicare Advantage plans are rated from 1 to 5 stars with 5 being an excellent rating. A person can switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan from December 8, 2017 through November 30, 2018 provided that there is a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan in your area. You can only switch once during the Special Enrollment Period.

Reaching Seniors and Beyond!

The Crawford

County Commission on Aging still has funds available from a $2,500 grant from Meals On Wheels America to assist low-income Crawford County older

adults with pet food and vet bill assistance. Fick & Sons also donated an additional $500.00 to

assist those needing help with spaying or neutering surgery along with the Grayling Hospital for Animals assisting in helping make the surgeries more affordable.

As a reminder, this program is designed to

supplement, not replace, a person’s pet food or veterinary spending. A person may receive up to 1 bag of pet food quarterly (in any 3 month period) and a

one time assistance with a vet bill up to $75.

To be eligible for this assistance, a person must be a resident of Crawford County, age 60 or older, and have income at or below $1,508 per month for an individual ($2,030 for two people). In addition, a person will also qualify if they receive Food Stamps, SSI or Medicaid.

People who believe they may qualify

for this assistance should call the

Commission on Aging at (989)348-7123 to be screened for eligibility. Proof of

income is required.

Please wear clean, dry shoes!

Suggestion: I’d like a mirror in the hallway above the water fountain, please.

Response: Since there are mirrors in each bathroom, we have decided not to spend money on an additional mirror in the hallway. Is there some reason, why the bathroom mirrors aren’t enough? Let me know if I’m not thinking of some other angle.

Suggestion: Could we please have something other than these bagged apples? Response: We have heard you! A switch was made to regular apples. Would you like

them sliced for you while you eat? Or do you like to eat them whole?

Suggestion: Put the butter out earlier so it is soft..

Response: Based upon your feedback, we switched from margarine cups to butter cups. Health department guidelines require us to keep butter refrigerated so we cannot leave it out to

soften. Margarine on the other hand can be left out. We have switched back to margarine so it should be softer now.

Suggestion: Can we please have a Salad Bar on Thursday – we really miss it.

Response: A salad entrée (meal) is something we are working on for this summer.

Please note: There were several suggestions in the box about the food served. We are in the process of revising our menus. In addition, the state is revising the standards we have to follow for our meal programs. We will be looking at all your comments in conjunction with the new standards. Make sure you let our Nutrition Manager, Dale, know at each meal if there is something you’d like to see changed. Better yet, come to the Foodie Group

monthly meetings if you’d like more input too! (see page 11 for details) Thank you for all of your suggestions! Alice Snyder, Director

In the USA almost 800,000 people have heart attacks each year. Although two thirds are first time heart attacks, there is one third of the population that has repeated heart attacks. According to the Center for Disease

Control (CDC) one in four Americans die of heart attacks. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups including African Americans, Hispanics and whites. Heart disease costs the Unites States about $200 billion each year. The cost is attributed to health care services, medications and lost productivity.

There are many risk factors and half of Americans have at least one of these risk factors. They are:

• High Blood Pressure • High LDL Cholesterol • Smoking • Excessive alcohol use, • Physical Inactivity, • Poor diet • Overweight and obesity • Diabetes

Many symptoms are non-traditional with a heart attack. For instance we all think

we would have chest pain. That is a sign of a heart attack, but also there are other major signs:

• Discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or even the stomach

• Shortness of Breath • Breaking out in a cold sweat • Feeling nausea or light headedness

If you think you are or someone

else is having a Heart Attack

call 911 immediately With the devastating statistics there are healthy changes we can all make to our lifestyle and lower the

risk of heart disease: • Watch your weight: if you are getting too heavy, start eating healthier food and exercise • Quit smoking: and stay

away from secondhand smoke • Learn to control your stress and

blood pressure. • When drinking alcohol, drink in

moderation • Get active (at least 150 minutes a

week)

• Choose a healthy diet. You can always find healthy ways to prepare food and exercise through some of the following websites:
