Crane - lifts and moves heavy objects; liftingtackle is suspended from a pivoted boom thatrotates around a vertical axis.

A crane-like device for suspending or loweringequipment.

A simple crane having lifting tackle slung from aboom.

Used to move loads over variable (horizontal andvertical) paths within a restricted area.

Used when there is insufficient (or intermittent) flow

volume such that the use of a conveyor cannot bejustified.

Provide more flexibility in movement than conveyors.

Jib craneJib crane

A jib crane with the vertical member running on a track,its upper end guided by a parallel overhead track.Operates like an arm in a work area, where it canfunction as a manipulator for positioning tasks.

A hoist is attached to the arm for lifting.

Arm mounted on the wall or attached to a floor mountedsupport.

Arm can rotate 360.

The hoist can move along the arm .

Gantry CraneGantry Crane Similar to a bridge crane except that it is floor supported

at one or both ends instead of overhead (wall) supported.

Used to span a smaller portion of the work area ascompared to a bridge crane.

The supports can be fixed in position or they can travelon runways.

Can be used outdoors when "floor" supported at both

ends. Types of gantry cranes are Single leg, double leg, andmobile.

Stacker craneStacker crane

Similar to a bridge crane except that, instead of a hoist, ituses a mast with forks or a platform to handle unit loads.

Considered fork trucks on a rail.

Used for storing and retrieving unit loads in storageracks, especially in high-rise applications in which theracks are more than 50 feet high.

Can be controlled remotely or by an operator in a cab onthe mast.

Can be rack supported

Wheel mounted craneWheel mounted crane

This crane consisting of a rotating super structure withpower plant, operating machinery and boom, mountedon a base or platform equipped with axles and rubber-

tired wheels for travel. The base is usually propelled bythe engine in the superstructure, but it may be equipped

with a separate engine controlled from thesuperstructure. Its function is to hoist and swing loads at

various radii. Various sizes and have capacities from 5 to 35 tons or

larger.
