DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: GrandparentsAssembly One of our very favourite events in the school calendar is GrandparentsAssembly when we get a number of generations together to celebrate all the very best aspects of family. It is an opportunity to show love and respect for our wonderful grandparents, or people who are like a grandparent, and we showcase our choir and students in a variety of joyous ways. This year we chose to hold it in autumn to avoid the extremes of heat or cold and if the number of attendees is anything to go by it was a great decision. This event continues to be immensely popular with our whole community and we even had Sofias Babushka join us all the way from the Ukraine. Tatiana is Yana Chertkovas mum. She speaks Russian but with some sign language and interpretation from Yana we got along famously! School Board On Monday night new members of the Board attended some training to ensure that they know what their role is in representing the parent body and promoting the school in our community. We are busily planning the activities that the Board will be involved in to set the direction of the school for the future. The current Board members are; Parents– Alison ONeill (Chairperson) Amy Ngarimu, Nathalie Neervoort, Danika Edwards, Natalie Eastman and Dannette Hawkins Staff - Carissa Carroll, Amanda Robinson, Karen Pope and myself. A couple of parent members have had to relinquish their position due to work rosters and we are seeking passionate and energetic souls who are free twice a term, from 2.45-4.00pm for meetings. An effective Board is even more so if it is fully representative of the community and has a balance in terms of gender and culture etc. We really could use some fellas to provide their perspective. Please feel free to come and chat with me, or Alison ONeill, if you want more information or wish to nominate. Community members could also nominate someone they think would be a good representative. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a framework for creating safe and

orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the social-

emotional outcomes for students.

It is a proactive approach that relies on research based practices,

including developing clear behavioural expectations, teaching these

expectations, acknowledging appropriate behaviour, consistently

correcting inappropriate behaviour, and using behavioural data to

systematically solve problems.

At Craigie Heights PS we create a safe and orderly environment by

consistently rewarding students for learning, living and playing in

Harmony. Here is just some of the ways we reward students who follow

our expected behaviours.

Play-Based Learning at Craigie Heights Primary School

Our Business Plan 2019-2021 identifies as a strategy… “Refocus the development of play based learning for Kindergarten to Year 2 students”. Play is an essential part of every child’s learning. When children play they are building their knowledge, skills and attitudes for lifelong learning. At Craigie we believe that play-based learning is an essential part of a balanced approach, alongside explicit teaching and learning. There are different types of play: Adult-led: Activities that have a clear goal and are

organised and directed by an adult. Guided: Where adults join in to extend learning through

demonstrating and questioning. Child-initiated: More spontaneous play chosen by the child.

A play-based learning environment encourages talking, enquiry thinking and social skills. Children may use literacy and numeracy skills and they can see that these skills as part of everyday life. If you would like more information on play-based learning visit : www.education.wa.edu/play-based-learning

Student Councillors are Leaders!

On Monday 25th March, Mrs Carroll & Mrs Nielsen took the Year 6

Student Councillors to the Perth Convention Centre for the 2019

National Young Leaders Day. The National Young Leaders Day consists

of keynote talks from various speakers, multimedia presentations and

interactive learning that seeks a range of specific outcomes for young

people who aspire to lead themselves and others well. The speakers

included Leisel Jones (Olympic Swimmer), Matt Cosgrove (Author),

Akram Azimi (Young Australian of the Year) and Liv Phyland (Host of

The Loop). The inspiring and high energy day was enjoyed by all CHPS

participants. The Student Councillors will present their new found

knowledge at the Happy Kids / Harmony Day assembly.

Grandparents’ Assembly Last Thursday we hosted our annual Grandparents’ Assembly. It was a wonderful morning and was well attended by our school community. We raised $508 for the Cancer Council. Terms 2 & 3 As the cooler weather approaches, we ask for students to arrive at school at 8:25am to prepare for the start of the school day at 8:40am. Students here before that time will be directed to sit in the alcove at the Early Childhood Learning Block. Students will not be permitted to play games, like handball, during Terms 2 and 3. Camp Australia is available for before school care. School Sculptures The sculptures, at the front of the school, are not safe to be played on, as there is no soft fall. Positive Behaviour Support Policy Please take the time to check the changes to our policy online. The recent Directive from the Director General is reflected by new statements that students who intentionally harm other students, start fights or video fights will be suspended and lose Good Standing for a period determined by the Principal. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PBS CORNER DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT SCULPTURES BY THE SCHOOL

Sculptures by the School Earlier this term the Year 5 & 6 students attended an excursion to Sculptures by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach. The students came back to school inspired to create their own masterpieces. They spent time designing, making and appraising their art work. Mr Shaw coordinated this project that culminated on Grandparent's Assembly and morning tea with an exhibition of the students' work. All classes were invited to attend the exhibition. Community members and students voted on their favourite art works for the People's Choice Award. What a motivating and inspiration learning activity it was for the Craigie Heights students. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PBS CORNER DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT BOUNCE BACK BEAR

Bounce Back Bear has landed in year 2 Rooms 6 & 8! Bounce Back is teaching the students about resilience. Resilience is having the ability to bounce back. Bounce Back Bear is a normal bear that teaches us that everyone has good days and bad days. He knows he might get somethings right on some days and other days he may make mistakes. We are learning that being resilient involves seeking new experiences, opportunities and taking safe risks. Bounce Back Bear and his tub of goodies goes home with three special students every week for an entire week. During this time the students have opportunities to discuss what being resilient means and get to share some great times with the bear. We are loving learning about resilience!

TENNIS—ACADEMY PLATE

On the 21st & 22nd of March, CHPS entered a boys and girls tennis team in the Academy Plate. Both teams played 7-8 singles & 7-8 doubles each over the day in hot conditions. They displayed awesome skills, determination & excellent tennis etiquette. The boys - Jett R, Lochlan K, Jayden D & Oscar J, finished 4th in their pool, with 3 wins, 3 losses, a terrific improvement on last year. The girls - Ella H, Lyla G, Mia R & Isla H, did wonderfully well with 4 wins and 2 losses, earning themselves a spot in the division 2 finals which they won! The students are to be commended on their efforts over the last month at trials & training, as well the tournament. Their behaviour was exemplary, a credit to CHPS. Also a big thank you to all those 40 students who tried out for the 8 spots, I hope to see you back next year!

Parent parking is available in the car park in front of the Early Childhood Area. This area is not a ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. Provision has been made for two disabled parking bays in this car park. Please do not park in these bays as we have families requiring these spaces. Never use the staff car park. "Kiss and Drop" - If you wish to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area, there is a zone specifically for this purpose on Spinaway Street. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in this area. Additional parent parking is kindly offered at the Craigie Baptist Church car park beside the school, which is a short walk to the school. We are so lucky to have this additional parking so please respect everything on their site. The school oval will also be opened for parking for assemblies and school events. Parking on the verges around the school is extremely dangerous and puts our students at risk. Unfortunately a number of parents continue to park on our neighbours verges or drive-ways and this has been reported to the Joondalup Council for their action.

The Munch Room Canteen – Wednesday & Friday Specials This is your last chance to grab a term one special! Check out the picture to see the delicious meals on offer. Term two specials will include homemade lasagne and homemade mac and cheese – yum! Canteen prices effective as of Term 2 The Munch Room has always strived to maintain affordable canteen prices for our Craigie Heights families, however small changes will be made starting next term which will see a slight increase in a small number of items due increasing costs from our supplier. Thank you for your continued support and should you have any concerns with these changes or any ideas, please contact Amber. Orders Our Canteen is open on Wednesdays and Fridays, and located in the undercover area. Come and place your order at the window before school or online at www.quickcliq.com.au. Volunteers Our Canteen Manager Amber is always looking for willing volunteers to help in the Munch Room. If you have some spare time (even one day a term!) we would love to hear from you - your kids will love it and we will have some good laughs while making some yummy food for our school. Be sure to follow The Munch Room Canteen on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest specials! https://www.facebook.com/TheMunchRoomCanteen/

Position Vacant – Fundraising Co-ordinator We’re looking for an organised and enthusiastic volunteer to take on the elusive role of Fundraising Co-ordinator. This person would be responsible for the planning and implementation of fundraising events throughout the year. Working with a committee that already has a number of enthusiastic members, we have a number of events already booked for the year ahead (which are well documented on how to arrange), as well as the opportunity for some exciting new events to be introduced. This role is one that can be shared or taken on alone, and is well supported by our P&C members, and our fabulous CHPS volunteers! If you are interested please contact: [email protected] .

Netball Goals – Help Needed! We are looking to install a netball goal onto our existing basketball hoops, but at a lower level for our younger students to use. A suggestion has been to weld these at a lower level, and to a different angle, but we must ensure this is done correctly and is safe. We are looking for advice and help on how best to do this, and then carry out the works. If you are in the know how please email us at [email protected] and we will contact you!
