Anniversary Tap Takeover!
Its been an exciting start to the year at Crafty!
In January we began partnerships with Tryon Distributing in Charlotte,
Mutual Distributing & Preyer Brewing in Greensboro Winston, and
Fullsteam in Raleigh-Durham to clean and maintain their draft lines! Left
to themselves, beer lines naturally become plagued with mineral deposits
and micro-organisms, producing off-flavors in the beer, discoloration, and
clumps of beer stone. Crafty cleans all lines every two weeks according to
the Brewers Association Guidelines to ensure the pint consumed tastes
exactly as the brewer intended.
If youre lucky enough to have scored tickets to Super Bowl 50 to support
our Panthers, check out the Michelob Trailer, built by SME (of Mooresville,
NC) and the draft system installed by yours truly! It was an honor to be
part of such a projectcheck out pics on page 4. Keep Pounding!
And be on the look out for Untapped for Business We will have our full
beer selection listed with descriptions on Untapped as well as a tab on our
Facebook page and embedded menu on our website, plus notifications on
your Untapped and FB if you have favorited Crafty!
Cheers to another great month and see you at Crafty!
Cheers & beers,

Weve all heard the term thrown around whenever someone encounters a beer that just seems off. The term skunked has somehow been adopted by many as a catch-all term to describe a perceived flaw in a beer but it has a very specific meaning and origin. The industry standard term for a skunked flavor is in fact lightstruck. It comes from the fact that the iso-humulones derived from alpha acids that impart the often sought after hop bitterness to a beer are sensitive to UV light exposure. When UV light passes through a beer it breaks apart those molecules and some of the resultant compounds bind with sulfur compounds to create a new chemical similar in structure to the aroma particles found in skunk spray, hence the loveable nickname.
Unfortunately, this is a relatively quick and irreversible process and is usually much more noticeable in lighter styles with fewer other bold flavors to mask. The type of packaging also impacts the rate at which skunking occurs. Clear glass blocks no UV light, green glass blocks only about 30% of UV light, brown glass can block up to 98% of UV light but the only packages that truly offer 100% protection are cans and kegs. Cardboard cases and tall bottle holders help to mitigate this effect. So keep an eye out for direct exposure to natural and fluorescent light when shopping for beer and when in doubt, go for a can.
Heres a diagram for the science savvy:
We met several of their employees at the NC Craft Brewers Conference
last December really nice and knowledgeable folks. They love their jobs.

Innately predisposed to be smooth
when Poured Hard, this nitro coffee
porter builds a pillowy, toffee-sweet
head. Coffee and flavors of
caramelized sugar, cacao and hints
of blueberry lead to a light, smoky
finish.
Its impossible to forget your first
squeeze. Once a year, as the
newest humulus lupulus harvest
arrives at Tregs, they blend these
super-fresh hops into an Imperial
Amber Ale. Excessively dry-hopped,
Nugget Nectar is an explosion of
pine, resin and mango.
Sunday Morning Stout, 11.3% ABV, is
an American Imperial Stout aged in
bourbon barrels. The result? A
beautiful ebony pour with a large,
creamy, off-white head that lasts and
lasts. The aromas of roasted coffee
and bourbon awaken your senses
while their flavors blend with hints of
chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and
caramel.
