Carole Brungar "The Road To My House" class.  And a photo of Carole Brungar herself – report by Alison Spurdle

We had a great two days creating and letting ourselves create without pressure to be perfect. The first day started off easily enough using our tea bags to create our background. Then we were encouraged to free‐motion stitch small pictures of houses, trees, animals, whatever had relevance to us. For some of us that was a challenge, but the idea was not to be perfect but to have a casual look about our pictures.

Day two saw us embellishing some of our pictures with embroidery floss, beads, buttons, ribbon etc. By the time we were finished we had a plan for being able to complete our work. Our challenge is to finish them so Carole can take them to Mini‐symposium in July.

Carole was a great tutor; very patient and encouraging. Carole has written a book which several of us have read and so we purchased a copy for our library.

President’s Report – Lee Nattrass Hello Fellow Quilters

March is proving to be such a busy month – it started for me with a retreat with a group of friends, which included a visit to new quilt shop ‘Fox’s Cottage’ in Foxton.  What a lovely shop with a great selection of fabric, yarns, notions and gift options.   We are going to include this in the ‘Shop Hop’ bus trip in August so you will be able to check it out for yourself.

This past weekend I attended Carole Brungar’s class and learned to be not so afraid of free motion quilting. This was a fabulous class with everyone making wonderful little machine stitched pictures – such fun.   I understand that our committee had you well entertained with their show and tell at the March meeting.  Sometimes, despite our best efforts situations change and speakers pull out, it is so reassuring that we can cover those situations from within our club.

At the meeting, it was also mentioned that the committee has been reviewing the constitution, it is 20 years since it was written and so we are just looking to make sure it stays current.  More info will be coming out about this shortly to give everyone time to have a look at our suggestions.

It was also announced that Coastal Quilters is going to be involved with the Craft and Quilt Fair that is being held at Te Rauparaha Arena from 8‐10 September.  Lisa Avery has been liaising with the organisers and they are keen for us to exhibit a variety of quilts.  So, we are issuing a challenge for this exhibition and the theme is ‘Fair’.  We are really keen to see how people interpret the word ‘fair’, as it has so many meanings.

I hope you all enjoy your Easter and if you are traveling wish you safe travels. Yours in quilting Lee

Tip of the Month The club now has a SIzzix machine. Lisa Avery gave us a demonstration of how it cuts fabric to the selected template shape.  It actually seems straight forward.  There is a lot of information about it on the internet – search on SIZZIX  FABI quilt or start with www.sizzix.com.  We have a range of fabric dies and intend to buy more.  If you want to try it talk to Lisa at the next meeting.   The Sizzix machine is available at Sit and Stitch, meetings, and retreats.

MEMBERSHIP  In March we have 144 members. Our newest member is Leonie Reeves, please make her welcome.  Most members receive their newsletter by e‐mail.  The preferred way for members is via email through Yahoo Groups, so please join the Yahoo CQEvents group.   If you paid your subscription online remember to fill out a membership form, and hand it in at the meeting or email it.   If you need help contact Mary Goldsbury.
