Amar KaulTerritory Vice President – India, Middle East & South Africa Compression Technologies Ingersoll Rand (India) Ltd Website: www.ingersollrand.co.in

Tell us about Ingersoll Rand, its brands and to whom it caters to?

Ingersoll Rand has been one of the oldest American investments in India dating back to 1921 and one of the first companies which made India the Global Sourcing hub for its different product lines. We have been pioneers in bringing centrifugal technology into the country as well as the Award winning "Nirvana" energy saving VSD Rotary Compressors, and Best in Class "Trishul" Dryers. Ahead of the market, Ingersoll Rand had the courage to invest in manufacturing of centrifugal compressors in India, in 1989, when the technology was barely known and hardly accepted in India. This leading approach has been handsomely rewarded by the market. Over and above bringing global innovations to India, we also continue to design and develop local innovative solutions for our customers in India. Apart from centrifugal air compressors, we have localised contact cooled rotary air compressors, refrigerated air dryers, and many other products and services, the latest being the graduation from old concept of Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) to Package Care and Package Care+.

We invested heavily on "remote monitoring" to monitor the performance of our machines through remote access system. This helps in preventive maintenance, ie, we ensure that the machine is well serviced before it reaches level of break down, which in turn helps in reducing machine downtime and

any loss of production for the customer. Most importantly our vision is to bring to the Indian industry at a level of service that is only been exhibited in the consumer goods space as of now. We have already made couple of strides in this direction and which have been well received in the industry. With two state-of-the-art ISO-9001 and ISO-14001 approved manufacturing facilities at Ahmedabad and Sahibabad, we have a Pan-India presence with direct sales and service offices and a well-networked distribution setup. Today, we have a strong network of our valued partners in more than 50 locations covering all Tier I-II Cities in India. Globally we have 60 manufacturing sites employing 40,000 employees spread across different parts of the world. We also have tie-ups with institutes like IITs and IISC for technology development and innovation as well as with top engineering colleges for the skill development of their graduates.

What are Ingersoll Rand’s vision, purpose, values and goals? What are the things that unify Ingersoll Rand as an organisation?

Our Vision: A world of sustainable progress and enduring results Ingersoll Rand is committed to India and is implementing strategies for product and design innovation for industrial technologies; food safety; energy efficiency and sustainability. Our workplace emphasizes the values of Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, Innovation and Courage. Our Brand Promise, Vision

and Values are the language that unifies us as an organization and creates a common purpose: Advancing the quality of life by creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and efficient environments.

How does Ingersoll Rand enhance the quality of life? What are the things that have special meaning and make your company deeply proud of?

We inspire progress through releasing the potential in people and technologies to advance the quality of life by making environments comfortable, sustainable and efficient, and help enable our customers to achieve real progress and create a positive impact in their world. We continue to identify ways to improve the work we do, the products we make, and to meet our commitments to our customers, our colleagues and our communities. With a major emphasis on ‘Innovation’ to drive ‘Productivity’, the company has had many firsts to its credit. Through our innovations and dedication to corporate citizenship and sustainability, we seek to create a positive impact on societies throughout the world. Our products help conserve energy, improve user safety, enhance economic growth, increase the yield of the global harvest, and provide a host of other benefits to society. Ingersoll Rand is a pioneer in bringing centrifugal technology into India and started manufacturing

CENTACS (Centrifugal Compressors) way back in 1989 when centrifugal technology was hardly known and accepted. In recent times, with the focus shifting to energy efficient compressor technology, Ingersoll Rand launched the award-winning ‘Nirvana’ energy saving rotary compressors. The company continues to bring latest technologies to India and launch localized products keeping in mind the requirements of the Indian market. Not just path-breaking technologies and products, Ingersoll Rand’s key strength is its world class service that it provides to its customers across the countryOur focus on sound environmental, safety and health operating practices is leading to decreased use of hazardous substances; reduced waste and emissions; improved energy and water conservation; greater reuse and recycling of materials; and prevention of accidents and injuries across our operations.

To make the products to succeed in these markets and to address society’s pressing energy and environmental challenges, what is it that Ingersoll Rand believes in?There is a greater demand for energy efficient (low life cycle cost or operating cost) and minimum maintenance (high reliability) machines. Today, the purity of air has become the most important element if you have critical oil-free applications

which are catered to by our Class 0 range of oil-free compressors for rotary screw and centrifugal technologies. Similarly, if you have a multiple-compressor installation, advanced controllers — coupled with extensive system audit services enable our customers to have optimum air efficiency, consistent flow, pressure and extended life of system components.

What are the things Ingersoll Rand will do to deliver on the customers’ needs and the communities where Ingersoll Rand operate to achieve optimum premier performance? Over the past few years, we have been consistently investing in initiatives that have improved our productivity and this continues to be the journey of operational excellence. Ingersoll Rand is at the forefront of customer-centric ‘Innovation’ and we are constantly innovating products and solutions that are relevant to the Indian market and our customers. To sum up, our innovative approach, customer-first and solutionizing mind-set has driven us into the position of market leaders.Market opportunities are governed by the mega trends that define the economic progress. Growing population and scarcity of power become the basis industries in all verticals like FMCG, F&B, Pharma, Power coming up with strong growth potential. Air compressors being one of the most ubiquitous industrial workhorses energizing modern day factories, hospitals, workshops and residential complexes, their demand is expected to be recurrent.

What are the company’s expansion plans, both geographically and in terms of capacity addition? Are there any new or emerging sectors that the company is planning to tap into?Ingersoll Rand is committed to India and had announced last year that it is investing Rs 100 crores to upgrade its manufacturing facility in Naroda, near Ahmedabad. The transformation is in progress and the Phase-I of this project is completed. This strategic investment reinforces Ingersoll Rand’s overall growth Strategy in India that is focused on driving innovation, technology and product development and is a reflection of its long-standing commitment to the country. manufactured at the Naroda Plant will be distributed across both Indian and global markets. We will continue invest in customer centric innovations, partner with our customers to make them successful in their business. The simple philosophy is that if we help our customers be successful and grow, we automatically will grow and be successful.

What is Ingersoll Rand’s India strategy for product innovation and design for industrial technologies, food safety, energy efficiency and sustainability? We see a definite shift from oil-injected compressor technology to Class O oil-free compressor technology. In centrifugal compressor space, we see a movement from small and medium capacity machines to large capacity machines. Today, energy efficiency is not a unique selling proposition, it is considered given. Customers prefer solutions that have the lowest cost of ownership. Often compressed air systems in factories and facilities are not energy efficient. The world without electricity is unimaginable; it touches every aspect of our life whether it is industry or domestic world. Similarly power plants without compressed air are unimaginable. Whatever may be the power generation approach, whether it is thermal, hydro, nuclear, solar farm or wind farm. Compressed air is indispensable in every type of power plant. It is one of the most important and critical utility used for operating and controlling the power plant instrumentation system. It also contributes in keeping a pollution-free environment. Hence it is very important to design a compressed air system which is highly reliable, efficient, provides right flow and pressure at right price. Ingersoll Rand approach has been to understand requirement in terms of application, optimum and critical pressure and flow requirements, load unload pattern, plant layout, reliability. Our buying process study tells us that efficiency is key to power plants as against the myth that it’s not important since they produce power at low cost and in big quantity. Power saved is power sold for power plants. We design compressed air system keeping in mind continuous usage for one year without maintenance. Ingersoll Rand understands

this well and offers highly reliable proven equipment with advanced system controllers.Ingersoll Rand has demonstrated capability of Engineering, Procurement, and Erection and Commissioning of equipment like compressors, heat exchangers, dryers, filtration units, cooling towers, controls, instrumentation, piping and valves. On top of this, this equipment can be integrated based on criteria decided with customers. Utility arrangements like plant lighting, drinking and wastewater system, etc, can also be provided.Through our experience in handling energy audits, we have seen that the audit processes are extremely educational and informative. We encourage our customers to participate and learn the methodology during such audits apart from just monitoring and implementation. With compressed air being one of the poorly managed industrial utilities, there is enormous opportunity to change the way it works now.

What are the current challenges faced by Ingersoll Rand in India and what is the way forward according to you?

The focus of the industry is moving towards the quality of air considering critical applications in certain industrial sectors. As this requirement becomes critical in deciding the selection of the air compressor, our best-in-class oil-free technology provides customers with the peace of mind that they look for. Also, the industry has moved towards higher energy efficiency (low life cycle cost or operating cost) and lower maintenance (high reliability), for offsetting the capital cost which is incurred on the machines. The new wave in the market is the Heat Recovery Unit which is gaining importance due to its feature of recovering the heat energy from the compressor to generate hot water for various applications like boiler pre-feed, space heating, sanitary purposes and any other process applications.

What is the percentage of funds allotted to carry out research work?

We have made significant investments in R&D. We run a DSR approved laboratory in Naroda which is benchmarked against Ingersoll Rand's global R&D facilities on regular basis for accuracy and consistency.

We test the entire range of our products in this lab for its performance and reliability. In addition, we also operate Engineering Technology Centres in Bzengaluru and Chennai. Number of patents filed by us in US talks about our commitment to innovation through R&D. With local innovations, we have produced products like Evolution compressors (rotary), Trishul dryers and 3CIIi Centac machines, which are best in Class of their own with multiple patents. Often compressed air systems in factories and facilities are not energy efficient. System owners have great opportunities to improve operating margins and reduce costs through energy savings. As every industry tries to cut down costs, audits of compressed air systems help in reducing hidden costs and ultimately contribute to increase in savings. Ingersoll Rand's Audit Solutions offers services that help our customers identify potential leakages and take corrective actions to conserve energy. Some of the real cases after acting on actions from energy audit have had pay back of less than 6 months after which is pure savings. Through our experience in handling energy audits, we have seen that the audit processes are extremely educational and informative. We encourage our customers to participate and learn the methodology during such audits apart from just monitoring and implementation. With compressed air being one of the poorly managed industrial utilities, there is enormous opportunity to change the way it works now.

What is the growth rate you are aiming at during the current fiscal and how is it poised to grow in the next 5 years?Product improvement is a continuing goal at Ingersoll Rand and this is not done in isolation. We are continuously engaged with our customers through “Voice of customers”, survey and interviews to find out their exact requirements and unmet needs.Happily, in 2014-15, the Indian economy has started showing signs of gradual improvement with business expectations, exports and industrial production recuperating. This more favourable outlook reflects stronger sentiment resulting from the new government’s promise to prioritize economic reforms and enhance the country’s business environment. ◘

Shavo Group Cementing their Position as a Solution Provider

T he germination dates back to I960 when their founder and Chairman, H K Shah, decided to depart from

the family textile trading business of three generations. He identified a growing need for fluid power solutions covering pneumatics and hydraulics. In I960, he signed a marketing and manufacturing JV agreement with Norgren of USA for the manufacture of air fi lters, regulators and lubricators. Shavo Norgren, which subsequently started its manufacturing facility in Mumbai in 1968, went on to become India's largest producer of pneumatic FRLs, selling well over a million units.

Their core selling concept would have to be their deep application knowledge and command over the technologies they sell. For any solution-oriented company, this is critical. They have gone from selling components to systems and solutions and have complete turnkey capability allowing them to leverage the technologies they provide and offer better value to customers.

further arrangements were made to obtain advanced lubrication equipment and application know-how from Lubriquip Inc, USA now a GRACO owned company, who are world leaders in the field of industrial lubrication for more than 100 years, with brands like TRABON and MANZEL.

Products Shavo Group’s early years were dedicated to manufacturing compressed air filters, regulators and lubricators but the past 20 years have seen them focus heavily on high-technology products in the areas of industrial lubrication and spraying, fluid control technology, energy absorption and static neutralisation.

The Shavo Group has a diversified portfolio with a presence in various sectors. From being India's largest producer of compressed air processing equipment to being pioneers in the field of aerosol lubrication and bringing to India some of the most globally recognised products and solutions in energy absorption, gas management, static elimination, valves and fittings, and air moving products, the company has indeed come a long way.

The industrial sectors that these products find an application are steel, defense, aerospace, automotive, plastics, laboratories, R&D, infrastructure and many more. Their engineering equipment group deals with the more mechanical-based sectors and their fluid control group is focused on the process markets. While a diverse product portfolio brings its own challenges as against complementing products, they believe this has served their group well over the years.

Energy absorption has applications wherever they need to decelerate motion, in the industrial space. Factory automation especially with pneumatics is the key application, but Shavo also finds safety applications such as end stops for large cranes like those found in steel and ports as an important area. Lately their focus has been vibration isolation with special attention to strategic electronics in the defence sector which has some of the most stringent requirements for G force transmissibility.

In the plastics and converting area a lot of contamination and material misbehaviour, is often attributed to other causes when they really they are static related issues. Shavo provides static elimination solution with some leading technologies like integrated power supply ionising bars with full feedback control.

For gas delivery systems, they have some of the most sophisticated fully automated systems capable of dealing with the most dangerous gases, they offer from HORIBA a multi-gas, multi-range mass flow controller and many more such products across their range.

Corrosive gases are used in a wide range of industries from chemical, tooling and the new areas of nanotechnology, photovoltaics, etc. Many corrosive gases are also liquefied which need special considerations. Shavo Group continues to publish articles and bring awareness to the industry by working with a number of industrial associations.

Four decades of pioneering work using aerosol lubrication technology in India led to expansion of this business line and a separate entity, Centraline Lubro-Tech Engineers (P) Ltd was formed in 1984 to focus and specialise in the field of industrial lubrication. Centraline designs, supplies and installs complete lubrication systems. It specialises in the supply of conveyor lubrication systems. rolling mill lubrication systems, sugar machinery lubrication and machine tools related lubrication systems to suit the needs of various clients, Progressively,

Foreign PrincipalsPost 1996 their primary focus has been to represent foreign manufacturers, especially in high-technology niche products, cementing their position as a solution provider with deep techni¬cal know-how and a world-leading product portfolio.

While they work in niche markets they have established themselves as offering a high level of technical support, combined with their decades of application knowledge, thereby offering their customers excellent value. The Shavo Group has always been associated

Approvals and Certifications

The valves and regulators Shavo supply to the chemical industry in general have a wide range of certifications. For valves, they have course type approvals from various third parties like Lloyd’s, TUV, DNV, etc, and the products meet all industrial standards and wherever required such as ASTM F-1387 for oil and gas; ECR 110 for automotive; NACE for sour service and many more. In fact their Tescom vaporizing regulators, in addition to having ATEX approval, is the first such unit to have PESO/CCOE approval from Nagpur.

R&D

Since their portfolio has the world's leading companies they have constant access to leading edge technology in almost all their areas of activity. The Shavo Group in

itself contributes with its in-depth skills and experience and constant updating in terms of application knowledge. They have found use of their principals' products in many application sectors as a first, which have then been repeated globally. Shavo contribute regularly on committees with their principles in development of new products in light of their years of experience, especially as companies develop products which are India-centric, eg, with their locally manufactured lubrication solutions they were the first to introduce aerosol lubrication to India and they continue to develop new systems as machinery speed and technology change.

Expansion Plans

They are already a pan-India operation with head office in Pune and factory

in Bengaluru. From an expansion standpoint they have strategically added fluid control solutions to cater to the high-purity nanotechnology and semiconductor business, which is on the anvil of robust growth. They have also expanded their lubrication offering to cater to the naval and defense requirements such as radar systems, wind turbine areas and considerably expanded their system capabilities for testing along with customised systems like oxygen dosing. This has enabled them to add value to their principal products by offering complete solutions. Another area of keen interest is the development of their technologies in vibration isolation, which they have deployed both for seismic and electronic applications.

New or Emerging Sectors to TapThe company is excited about some recent developments indicating that India will finally get a couple of semiconductor FABs. This level of FDI will be unprecedented and require a complete eco-system to support it, much like the automotive sector. Needless to say, semiconductor FABs will open up a number of fluid control opportunities across this sector. Further, the defense sector also offers, many new opportunities with both ongoing upgradation in the Navy and Air Force and many other programs, which require Shavo’s vibration and fluid control technologies. Recent developments in the plastic sector related to in-mould labelling also offer new opportunities to apply static generation equipment as against the traditional conduction foam technologies.

Changing Industrial Scenario of the Country

With the growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) many international technology solutions and practices penetrated India, moving many sectors from lower technology to higher technology solutions. This change is something they had anticipated early on and built their capabilities around, thus allowing them to provide these solutions to a variety of customers, be it specialised aerosol lubrication, gas delivery systems for toxic gases, static neutralisation and generation, etc. Also, the industry's move to automation with a focus on quality and safety in general has been a driving factor.

Growth Percentage Over the Past Decade

Post liberalization, they have seen a steady growth as imports opened up and duties reduced, In the past decade their annual growth has consistently exceeded 15 per cent annually. Shavo feels fortunate to work with some of India’s top companies and institutions like Reliance, Tatas, Hindustan Lever, Ashok Leyland, Biocon, GE, Dept of Space, Ministry of Defence and many more. It has in excess of 1,000 live accounts.

With respect to exports, they plan to tap opportunities in the growing markets of both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka over the next financial year, first with their lubrication solutions aimed at the steel sector and then other sectors, followed by some of their other products. Export orders have been executed to China. Dubai and Uganda, among other countries. ◘

• Asepco: aseptic valves and magnetic mixers for the biopharmaceutical industry

• FlowSmart: high purity sanitary gaskets, silicone transfer tubing and reinforced silicone hoses for the biopharmaceutical industry

Extension to Qdos range offers opportunities for upscale to higher flow rates - and opens up new, powerful opportunities for process engineersWMFTG is proud to release the new Qdos 120, offering flows up to 120 l/hr at a

max pressure of 4 bar, double the flow of existing models in the Qdos range of peristaltic metering pumps. This latest addition to the product range builds upon the core foundations of the Watson-Marlow’s design thinking for the widely deployed Qdos suite of high-accuracy chemical metering technology. Qdos 120 - not only offers double the flow of other models, it delivers a step-change in performance and usability compared to conventional solenoid or stepper-driven diaphragm metering pumps. All models in the Qdos family are designed to eliminate the need for ancillaries, boost productivity, and cut chemical wastage due to its highly accurate, linear and repeatable metering.

Powerful combination of features This powerful combination of core features offers significant benefits to process engineers in the water/wastewater, industrial and agri-chemical sectors. It is easy for customers to upscale to the higher flow rate of the Qdos 120 as it maintains the same common interface, connectivity and functionality of the existing Qdos models.Driven by market demand for pumps that

offer low total cost of ownership (TCO), the Qdos 120 allows engineers, as well as skid manufacturers and packaged-plant designers, to overcome a host of issues associated with diaphragm pump technology, such as poor suction lift and the downtime resulting from blocked valves and gas-locking. The peristaltic operating principal of the Qdos 120 has been designed to deliver continuous, smooth flow for optimal fluid mixing, while high accuracy provides chemical savings and increased process quality.

Safe, One-minute maintenanceThe combination of high reliability and low maintenance ensures minimal operational expenses. There are no valves or seals to clog, leak, gas-lock or corrode. Moreover, process uptime is maximised with no-tools maintenance and quick and easy pumphead replacement. In fact, there is only one consumable part on Qdos 120 pumps, the ReNu pumphead, which can be replaced in 60 seconds to return the pump to its as-new state. What’s more, the fully contained pumphead ensures no spillage or exposure to chemicals.

Increased flow capability at development partner sitesAmong the many success stories emerging from customers involved in the validation of Qdos 120s product development, is a seed treatment company, which since adopting the Qdos 120 has enjoyed improved flow capability and accuracy at a higher viscosity. Previously, the company was limited to the chemical types it could run on its existing Qdos 60. In contrast, the 120 allows a single pump to cover all flow ranges, providing users greater flexibility with a single spare part inventory.Additional benefits include the need to stock only one pump and a single component spares inventory. Furthermore, the company’s customers are now afforded more flexibility to apply material at higher-than-design rates if needed, while another positive comment made by the user alluded to fluid recovery on the Qdos 120, which was said to be simpler than on competing peristaltic pump models. The application at the seed treatment

plant involved pumping viscous and shear-sensitive polymer chemicals from 11 litre packaged containers to a 1,200 litre tote (via a 3-metre pipe run) ready for seed coating. Here, any pulsation would affect consistency because the pump is feeding an air-powered atomiser. The flow range of the Qdos 120 is ideal for this application because different seed is treated with different levels of chemical, on demand. The company does not want to make up large batches of treatment which would then go to waste. Here the self-priming and dry running capabilities of the Qdos pump play a vital role in facilitating this requirement.

High accuracy meteringAt another customer site – an electroplating business - the use of a Qdos 120 pump proved highly successful when metering various chemicals that included sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 50% and calcium fluoride. Features of the pump praised by the company included high accuracy along with low pulsation and reduced

maintenance requirements. The facility targets a “set and forget” approach to its plant requirements, which is fulfilled with a pump such as the Qdos 120.Further benefits available to all users of Qdos pumps include reduced installation costs as there is no need for the pulsation dampener, strainers, de-gassing, back pressure or foot valves required with diaphragm metering pumps. In addition, system design can be simplified thanks to high suction lift and viscous handling, eliminating the need for flooded suction, day tanks and specialist piping schemes. Logistics costs are also minimised due to the inherent accuracy of Qdos pumps, which enable higher concentrations to be used.

Control options

The Qdos 120 range includes a number of models offering different control functionality depending on customer requirements, extending from manual speed control models, through universal+ (manual, 4-20 mA input/output, pulse), to remote and Profibus control options.

Subodh Engineering: Filtration System with High-operational Safety

Subodh’s multi-tube filter consists of

elements made up of' multi-tubes

and dressed with seamless filter

hoses to obtain clear filtrate. The number

of elements housed in a pressure vessel

on tube sheets and various registers are

externally fitted to avoid complexity and

corrosion due to deposition of solids on

pipes if located inside the vessel.

• Pressure vessel: Designed under ASME Code, filtration is done with moderate pump pressure and initial circulation of slurry to obtain the clear filtrate.

• Filtration: As soon as filtrate is clear, the clear liquid is collected in the receiver.

• Scavenging:Soon the slurry exhausts in the tank, pumping is stopped and compressed nitrogen supply is restored in the filter vessel which filters the hold up till the end; the heel volume is filtered through single cartridge sintered metal filter fixed in inlet line.

• Drying: In order to effectively discharge the cake in solid form, the deposited cake is further blown with compressed nitrogen and dried to permissible limit.

• Discharging the cake: Special system is designed to collect the solids in closed bin through chute fixed with cloth sleeve to dissipate the clean air while solids are received by the bin. Special actuated butterfly valve is fixed at the drain point.

• Slurry discharge: In case of catalysts applications the same candles after drying the cake is back-flushed with clean liquid being hydrogenated in subsequent batch so that entire catalyst is re-slurried and collected in the reactor.

Description

• Construction of the filter element is with Hexa perforated tubes with centre rising tube closed at the bottom and provided with outlet at the top.

• The element is dressed with compatible seamless filter hose and clamped at the top and bottom.

CirculationandFiltration: In circulation and filtration mode, the flow is regulated from outside to in and the clean liquid flows from six tubes to bottom and taken out from centre rising tube to register and conveyed to the outlet.

Scavenging and Drying: While scavenging and drying of cake the flow of nitrogen gas is regulated from outside to in and the liquid is filtered and flows down and taken out from centre rising tube and conveyed to outlet through register pipes located outside the vessel. While drying when vessel is empty the filtrate collected while de-liquoring the cake in the same fashion.

Multi-tube Filter.

DischargingSolidsWhen the cake is dried to permissible limit, the filter vessel is depressurized and the limit is back-blown in reverse direction and the solids are collected from drain nozzle.

Choosing the Right Vacuum Pump

What’s the best vacuum pump? It is one of those maddening questions that can only be

answered with another question such as, What are you trying to do? That is because the real answer is that there is no best pump, and there is no worst pump. The best pump is and always will be the pump that does the best job at what you need it to do. Although that answer might seam to be obvious, the question continues to arise. It seems to arise due to the common human need of finding the answer to a problem. A team of experienced technical Toshniwal Engineers are ready to solve your problem.

This is especially true when considering vacuum processes and vacuum pumps. There is no single type of pump that will provide all the attributes necessary to meet any and all process requirements. Although the available varieties of pumps seem to present a puzzling collection of choices, the best choice becomes more

and more apparent as you go down the list and remove the pumps that will not meet your process requirements. This requires a careful analysis of your process and its pumping needs before you begin the elimination sequence. There are a number of important considerations to keep in mind when boiling down to the final and best choice for your process. Obviously, you need to consider the pumps ability to produce and maintain the ultimate pressure your process requires. The pumping speed vs pressure curves usually supplied in the various manufacturer’s literature need to be carefully considered and compared. The pump must have enough pumping speed to easily achieve and maintain the ultimate pressure required, etc.

All of these points can be garnered by a careful reading of the manufacturer’s data sheets and consulting the experts of vacuum pumps system manufacturers.

As the field narrows, the time arises to begin to look at the economic

aspects. Although the purchase prices is important, you should think carefully about cost of ownership. These include operating costs, maintenance cycles and costs, consumables, etc.

Roughing pumps are required by any vacuum process when it is necessary to reduce the pressure within the chamber from atmospheric pressure. All roughing pumps tend to have their highest pumping speeds at or near atmospheric pressure. As the pressure is reduced by the pump, efficient pumps such as offered by us do not decline in their pumping speed. Vacuum pumps that suck 20 per cent more volume than other single stage pumps, therefore, allowing the use of pumps within lower capacity are available in the market and are some of the most efficient ones.

Pumps with water liquid ring are also often used to avoid condensate but in this case there are great user in conveniences:

Electrical energy consumed by watering vacuum pumps are 40 per cent higher than multi-vane oil-lubricated vacuum pumps. Maximum achievable vacuum is 92 per cent unlike Toshniwal's that is 99.95 per cent.

The ultimate pressure is of course important. This can be clearly understood by the pump down curves the manufacturers provide in their data sheet.

There are various types of roughing pumps

• Oil-lubricated vacuum pumps

• Oil-less vacuum pumps.

An example of the graph of pump down curve is given below comparing an oil sealed manufacture oil-less vacuum pump of a different manufacturer and a liquid ring vacuum pump. The oil-lubricated vacuum pumps works on a principle of a very small amount of oil being injected in the stator which acts as a sealing medium and lubricant. There are generally 3 or more vanes rotating at high rpm creating a centrifugal action without any springs internally.

Even though as perceived by many that an oil sealed vacuum pump cannot tolerate vapour, these pumps as they operate from 80 to 120oC can work effectively even under water vapour load. The subject of

will have to live with that choice. Going carefully through the decision making processing described here will get you closer to the best choice for your process, but remember that there is no best pump. There is only the best pump for your process, installation and expectations, and that choice should not require any compromise.

Questions to ask while choosing a pump

• What ultimate pressure is required?

• Do the pumping speed vs pressure curves match the process requirements?

• Can the pump be installed easily on the system?

• What maintenance requirements or problems are there?

• What will the cost of ownership be?

Vacuum technology frequently makes it possible to replace processes that harm the environment with others that protect the environment. This is true of vacuum pumps and other vacuum components such as measuring devices and leak detectors, which are involved in many industrial applications.

These include among others

• Vacuum packaging of food,

• Evacuation and environment-friendly charging of refrigerators and air-conditioners,

• Production of ultra-pure high-strength metals,

• Manufacture of flat-panel displays,

• Evacuation of lamps and picture tubes,

• Chemical drying process,

• Distillation.

water vapour in terms of processes breaks down into two major segments. In some cases, the process itself is to remove water vapour. Examples would be such processes as vacuum drying of materials. Processes that are designed to remove water from materials will obviously result in extremely high gas loads of water vapour that result in a pumping problem that is traceable to the gas laws in that it is necessary to compare the vapour in order to pump it away. Compressing a condensable gas causes it to liquefy whenever it is compressed beyond the critical point in some cases, steam jet or water ring pumps that are able to easily deal with condensate are used, but they are limited in the ultimate vacuum levels they are able to produce and very high power consumption factor. If the drying process requires that lower ultimate vacuum be achieved at the end of the process, oil-lubricated vacuum pumps can be used.

The new generation oil-lubricated vacuum pumps can replace a liquid ring vacuum pump for better efficiency and better vacuum.

A better understanding of the practical work-a-day performance of vacuum systems can provide a better choice of pumps, pumping speeds and pump installation techniques.

Once the possible choices are narrowed down through whatever sorting stages are required, the particular choice of the actual pump becomes more and more important. Comparing vendors can be a complex task. Always keep in mind that the field of vacuum technology contains more opinions than facts and it becomes essential to talk to a number of people who are actually using a particular pump to collect their opinions. Then and only then should you attempt to reach that final and crucial decision. After all, you

Maag Industrial Pumps EnviroGear seal-less internal gear pumps have taken the safe, efficient and reliable handling of high-value, dangerous or hazardous chemicals to the next level of full containment. Traditional magnetically coupled internal gear pumps utilize two fluid chambers that are separated by an adapter plate, which can result in product

entrapment and poor reliability when transferring high-viscosity fluids. However, EnviroGear pumps feature a revolutionary between-the-bearings design that places magnets directly on the rotor, eliminating the need for an adapter plate and allowing for a single fluid chamber. The result is a pump that features a simpler flow path, which allows the pump to handle both water-like liquids and those with viscosities to 50,000 cSt, while providing leak-free product containment.

EnviroGear pumps have been constructed with only seven primary parts. Additional features include a SS, ductile-iron or carbon-steel construction; a rotor and idler supported at three locations that eliminates cantilever load; large, long radial bushings to support the entire length of the rotating element; and consistent flow when handling either water-like or highly viscous liquids.

SRS Pumps offers domestic and industrial diaphragm type dosing pumps for hazardous, toxic and poisonous liquids, where leakage is not at all permitted.

In hydraulic pump the process liquid is isolated from plunger by hydraulic oil and a diaphragm. The reciprocating plunger transmit displacement through hydraulic oil to the diaphragm, the oscillation of diaphragm produces pumping action on process fluid with help of non-return valve at both ends. Normally, Teflon is used as a diaphragm material.

Shaped diaphragm or mechanically operated diaphragm pumps provide absolute solution for batching operations. It is developed for handling corrosive liquid and those containing suspension of abrasive solids. Here the shaped diaphragm is directly connected to the reciprocating mechanical parts from the connecting rod mechanism. Viton, Neoprene or Teflon faced rubber are working as a diaphragm material.

Sandwich pumps have two identical diaphragms mounted together and operating as one piece. Since either diaphragm is capable of full pump performance, each is the backup of the other. Should one fail, operation continues without interruption on the other. There is no leakage or air sucked into the process and no mixing of the process fluid with the hydraulic oil. A pressure gauge reading between the diaphragms monitors the diaphragm conditions; no pressure indicates the diaphragms are okay while pressure indicates that the pump is operated on one diaphragm.

IRM Systems (IRMS) offers the Valve Integrity Management Solution (VIMS), an innovative method of maintaining critical pipeline valves to the highest performance

standards and criteria that can save up to 70% in lost production, excluding the substantial cost of associated labour, equipment and specialists.VIMS was developed in direct response to the distinct lack of analysed data associated with valve integrity and maintenance in the industry. Following a comprehensive audit of the number - and condition - of all valves on a designated pipeline, IRMS logs and analyses the data, integrating it via the VIMS into the operator’s existing systems and processes. Data on individual valves and assets can then be immediately accessed, in order to review a full range of benchmarked factors in, for example, design, construction, maintenance and reliability. By using this standardised approach to valve integrity maintenance - which relies upon solid risk and reliability engineering – operators can make informed decisions about inspection plans and repairs, saving time and money.

KBL offers magnetic drive pumps - ROMAK Pump Series. This includes ROMAK (RMK) process pumps that are used for handling various types of clear/clean chemical liquids without any suspended particles by various process industries. RMK pump is magnetic drive pump comprising permanent magnets.

A magnetic drive pump uses a balanced magnetic field to create the rotation of the fluid impeller. A mag-drive pump eliminates the direct drive mechanism and replaces it with a magnetic field.

Magnetic drive pumps can be easily substituted for DIN/ISO pumps without modifications at sites. Moreover, they have a lower life cycle cost compared to solutions with double mechanical sealed pumps.

RMK are available in different sizes varying between 32 to 100 mm with a total discharge capacity of up to 300 m3/hr. They are made for various applications in process industries and handling liquids, which have a temperature between -50 to +180°C. The Series has total 22 models in innovative designs.

ROMAK pumps have a centerline delivery with self-venting. The back pullout type design makes the installation of these pumps easy. These pumps are designed for suction pressure 5 kg/cm2. These magnetic drive pumps have a leak-proof coupling between the motor and the pump body. This in turn reduces the need for unexpected shutdowns.

Vibration and oil sensors provide crucial live data about the wear and tear. Vibration analysis then enables conclusions about the state of the bearings as well as the gearing, and oil analysis can help

determine when the lubricant needs changing.

LANXESS offers Lewatit-brand ion exchange resins for demineralization, removing arsenic from drinking water and heavy metals from wastewater, and to its Lewabrane RO membrane elements. Lewatit FO36 is a high-performance hybrid adsorber comprising a plastics-based anion exchange resin and an iron oxide with a goethite structure. By a special production method, the iron oxide is distributed in the pores of the slightly alkaline ion exchange resin in a layer just a few nanometers thick. This fine and thus highly reactive iron oxide layer can selectively bind the arsenic. Only the arsenic is removed because, unlike other anionic components in water, such as chloride, nitrate, sulphate and carbonate, it alone has a high affinity for the iron oxide surface. The other mineral substances – some of which are nutrients – remain in the drinking water.

Lewatit MonoPlus TP 207 is a weakly acidic, macroporous cation exchange resin with chelating iminodiacetate groups for the selective extraction of heavy metal cations from weakly acidic to slightly alkaline solutions. It is characterized by a monodisperse particle size distribution, meaning it comprises beads of uniform size. Its superior kinetic behaviour results in the faster uptake of ions and better capacity utilization compared to ion exchange resins with a heterodisperse particle size distribution. It is particularly suitable for the concentration, extraction and recovery of heavy metals from hydrometallurgical solutions, the removal of metal contaminants from processing baths, the recovery of useful metals from electroplating rinses, the selective removal of trace heavy metals from wastewater and from groundwater for the production of potable water.

LANXESS’s membrane elements for RO, marketed under the brand name Lewabrane, also serve the treatment of brackish water and seawater. LANXESS membrane elements boast a good permeate yield, effective salt rejection and low energy requirements. Innovative models recently became available with a novel feed spacer in which the mesh comprises strands of alternating thickness. The new product family is named after this alternating strand design (ASD). LANXESS’s technological and application expertise in membrane technology and ion exchange are continuously being incorporated into its LewaPlus design software. A new module of this software tool is now available that enables calculations of condensate treatment in water-steam circuits. These circuits are very widespread in industry, specifically in the power plant sector, and often place high and very specific demands on water quality.

Thermographic measurement and testing in the field of microelectronics is considered to be technologically demanding. This is due to the fact that users often want to detect temperature differences in the milli-Kelvin and micro-Kelvin range. IRBIS 3 active software meets all the requirements and supports analysis in which only a few micro-Kelvin separate defective and intact structures. Complex analysis algorithms within IRBIS 3 active form the basis for gaining more robust results. The software allows for the superimposition of different views at the pixel level, such as time with domain images, layout or visual images with amplitude or phase images. This enables the successful and precise pinpointing of abnormalities at their location. Users can easily adjust the desired degree of image superimposition using the menu. The values for a selected measurement point can also be viewed separately for all angles of measurement. Simultaneous zooming for the respective views is even possible.

IRBIS 3 active ensures secure processing and storage for large amounts of data – without the userhaving to intervene. This software offers similar flexibility with respect to the pace of measurement. Due to rapid temperature changes, high-frequency excitation is often required during measurements to gain sharper images. So-called “under sampling” proves to be a great advantage on site. With this feature, the excitation frequency can be increased to a multiple of the thermal camera frame rate. The test management feature of IRBIS 3 active allows various parameter settings to be set easily, neatly organized and quickly retrieved. This shortens the preparation time and ensures that measurement tasks can be performed by different processors under identical conditions.

This innovative idea by Quintex GmbH is already established using an easy-to-use overpressure system. Fabrication and assembly is now simplified by the ‘release’ operation by a gas detector.

No sophisticated technology is required using the Quintex program, allowing the parameters to be quickly set which then automatically ‘select’ the required enclosure type and size calculating the price instantly for the created system using standard ‘off-the-shelf’ components.

Using calculation programme “Calculation for pressurised enclosures” one can configure a system suitable for operation in an Atex Zone 1 or 2, gas or dust environment certified area by calculation.

Often you may find yourself in a situation where you are required to supply a minimum quantity of assembled units and it is not cost-effective or viable to obtain the necessary Atex approval from a certified body. Quintex have already paved the way with their SPZ Series standard sized enclosures (specific for connections under low pressure) to allow all customers to carry out their own installations and assemblies using an approved over-pressure system that is already approved and certified for use without any necessary flushing phase or pre-set requisites.

The online configurator is there to assist you with the design and valuation. It is easy and simple to use by entering only 4 key factors.

These self-explanatory input fields are entered in a normal manner and by the simple click of a button are then interpreted and calculated with the result appearing in a new programme window.

Essential components for torque measuring flanges in test benches are shaft couplings, which reliably compensate for any shaft misalignments. Based on the tried and tested, backlash-free and torsionally rigid ROBA-DS construction series, mayr power transmission offers compensating couplings which are specially tailored to the high requirements placed on them in measuring flanges.

The misalignments cannot be completely eliminated due to the existing tolerances in the measurements of the components used and the external influences. Therefore torsionally rigid shaft misalignment compensation couplings are used together with the measuring flange. mayr power transmission offers ROBA-DS compensating couplings, which are especially tailored to the requirements placed upon them by modern measuring flanges.

The ROBA-DS disk pack couplings compensate for radial, axial and angular shaft misalignments. They thus not only ensure precise measurement results, but also protect the bearings installed in the shaft train against unnecessary loads and therefore against unnecessary downtimes and costs. On the ROBA-DS couplings, the nominal torques stated in the catalogue can be used without any restrictions. The couplings are compact, and simultaneously unite high performance density with completely backlash-free function. They transfer torques up to the nominal torque completely backlash-free and with a consistently high torsional rigidity.

EVERPACK SM column packing is the sheet metal version of the popular EVERPACK WM (wire mesh) and HYFLUX (knitted wire mesh) packing. EVERPACK SM is supplied in modules, which consists of parallel layers of uniquely designed embossed sheet metal strips which are corrugated and arranged vertically. These modules are then stacked with an alternating 90 degree orientation of every other layer which gives a good lateral distribution of liquid. The embossed metal strips help to draw the liquid in all directions into a thin film and provides a marked improvement in uniform wetting of the packing bed. With the improved internal liquid distribution, high volumetric mass transfer efficiency is achieved and low pressure drop is maintained. Also because liquid is evenly distributed through the packing as a thin film, the total liquid hold-up in the packing is substantially reduced.

The standard packing version has specific surface area of 250 m2/m3 (EVERPACK SMY 250). However, other variants with specific surface areas of 125 m2/m3 (SMY 125), 175 m2/m3 (SMY 175), 350 m2/m3 (SMY 350), 500 m2/m3 (SMY 500),750 m2/m3 (SMY 750) and X crimp (60 degree crimp alignment) are also in addition to the column packing, Evergreen Technologies also design and manufacture high efficiency column internals (distributors, collectors, support grids, etc). Good initial distribution together with systematic redistribution is critical to optimum tower performance.

The FTIR instrument, a Gasmet DX4040, has been purchased by North Shore Environmental Construction (NSEC), a specialist in the management of hazardous materials response and clean-up and field-based environmental construction.

As a portable FTIR gas analyser, the DX4040 effectively enables laboratory grade analysis onsite which dramatically increases the speed with which contamination can be assessed, and avoids the problems, costs and delays associated with transporting samples to a laboratory. The DX4040 is able to measure up to 25 individual compounds simultaneously. It achieves this by producing a spectrum for the measured compounds, which means that the instrument can be set to display almost live readings for the compounds of potential interest.A major advantage of Gasmet’s FTIR analyzers, however, is their ability to identify unknown compounds. Calcmet software facilitates the identification of unknown peaks in a spectrum by comparison with Gasmet’s vast library of stored spectra.

GZA GeoEnvironmental has developed a strong working relationship with NSEC; NSEC providing emergency response, and GZA delivering clean-up monitoring and site clearance. Portable FTIR, in the right hands, is a very powerful tool, helping to define the composition of gaseous contamination, which reduces risk and builds assurance in remediation activities.

For reliable online bath monitoring the LiquiSonic analytical technology from SensoTech is used, monitoring continuously and in real time processes in degreasing,

preservatives or quenching baths. The LiquiSonic sensors are installed directly into baths or pipes of any size and measure precisely the concentration of, eg, cleaning, anti-corrosive or quenching agents. This makes an immediate and exact replenishment possible to ensure an optimum process performance and product quality. Furthermore, costs savings can be realized by avoiding over- and underdosing. In addition to the concentration measurement, the LiquiSonic sensors determine the contamination degree in cleaning baths. This enables the efficient control of bath changes, optimizing the component cleanliness while saving resources. The LiquiSonic technology is based on sonic velocity measurement providing accurate and every second updated measurement results. The measurement is inline and the real-time results are provided online to PCs and control systems.

INLINE ANALYTICAL TECHNOLOGYA falling film evaporator is used for concentration and evaporation of relatively low viscosity liquids. Steam, hot water or hot oil is used as the heating media and the process is carried out under atmospheric or vacuum condition. The evaporator is used for volume reduction where dilute products are concentrated

to a medium concentration. The process is continuous. The liquid to be concentrated is fed from the top and a distributor ensures proper feed distribution in each of the tubes. The distributor also ensures that all tubes are wetted and that the liquid flows in a film. The liquid and vapour both travel vertically downward. Due to a relatively thin film, the heat transfer coefficient is better than that obtained in reactors and simple shell and tube evaporators. If further concentration is required, the concentrated product can then be fed to the WFE

Atlanta, Georgia: American Process Inc, a leading biorefi nery technology developer, announces launch of their patent-pending GreenBox++ technology that replaces chemical pulping for production of high-strength, lightweight paper-based packaging using a chemical-free, water-based process powered by nanocellulose.

GreenBox++ technology is a 2nd generation enhancement of API’s GreenBox+ technology. In June 2015, API announced commercial installation of the GreenBox+ technology at Cascades’ Norampac-Cabano paper-based packaging facility in Quebec, Canada where a sodium carbonate-based chemical process was replaced with API’s patented hot-water extraction process. With GreenBox technology, the facility reduces its environmental footprint and process energy costs.

According to Dr. Kim Nelson, API’s VP of Nanocellulose Technology, “We have enhanced the performance and market potential of our GreenBox+ technology with addition of a bolt-on nanocellulose processing line. Utilizing nanocellulose produced on site from pulp made from our GreenBox process, the strength of paper-based materials used for packaging such as corrugated medium can be significantly increased. The strength-boost offered by nanocellulose makes GreenBox++ technology suitable for retrofitting both sodium carbonate and kraft pulping processes. This strength increase may also allow papermakers to lightweight packaging, or reduce the amount of material used.”

North Carolina, USA: Engineering researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a suite of techniques that allow them to create passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags that are 25 per cent smaller -- and therefore less expensive. This is possible because the tags no longer need to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) in order for the tags to function effectively.

In passive RFID technology, a “reader” transmits a radio signal that is picked up by the RFID tag. The tag converts the AC of the radio signal into DC in order to power internal circuits. Those circuits control the signal that is bounced back to the reader. Passive RFID technology is used in everything from parking passes to merchandise and asset tracking. For example, passive RFID is the technology that tells a traffic barrier to lift when you wave a parking pass in front of the scanner.

“By eliminating the hardware that is used to convert the AC signal to DC for powering the circuit, we are able to make the RFID tag much smaller and less expensive,” says Paul Franzon, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper on the work. The research was conducted with NC State Ph.D. students Wenxu Zhao and Kirti Bhanushali.

New Techniques Make RFID Tags 25% Smaller

Tokyo, Japan: Scientists at Tokyo Institute of Technology have produced airstable 1-aryl 1,3-diphosphacyclobutane-2,4-diyl materials by direct arylation with electron rich aromatic substituents. This method enables the fine tuning of the electronic properties of such phosphorous heterocycles compounds for applications including fabrication of organic electronics and hydrogen fluoride sensors.

Materials scientists have a strong interest in the development of methods for the synthesis of so-called ‘open-shell singlet P-heterocyclic’ materials systems for applications in the organic electronics industry including organically based sensors and optoelectronic devices. Here, Shigekazu Ito and colleagues at School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology report on a new method for the production of airstable 1-aryl 1,3-diphosphacyclobutane-2,4-diyls— an open-shell singlet P-heterocyclic’ materials system—by direct arylation with electron rich aromatic substituents.

Fine Tuning Phosphorous Heterocycle Materials for Organic Electronics Ohio, USA: Researchers from the University of Cincinnati recently

studied the sources of methane at three sites across the nation in order to better understand this greenhouse gas, which is much more potent at trapping heat in the atmosphere than is carbon dioxide.

The UC team, led by Amy Townsend-Small, assistant professor of geology, identified sources for methane in Carroll County, Ohio; Denver, Colorado; and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, by means of an analysis technique that consists of measuring carbon and hydrogen stable isotopes (isotopic composition). This approach provides a signature indicating whether methane is coming from, say, natural gas extraction (fracking), organic/biologic decay, or the natural digestive processes of cattle.

In findings to be presented at the May 18-21 regional American Chemical Society Conference held in Covington, Ky., Townsend-Small will present research results achieved with a team consisting of Claire Botner, recent UC graduate student; Paul Feezel of Carroll County Concerned Citizens; Don Blake, professor of chemistry, University of California-Irvine, and Josette Marrero, former UC-Irvine doctoral student.
