‘NEW HORIZON’ - BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Have you recently been bereaved? Looking for friendship and support?

How about coming along to ‘New Horizon’? This group started several years ago as a way of offering care, friendship and support to people who have recently been bereaved. We meet on Thursday afternoons every fortnight at 2.30 pm for about an hour in the Conference Room at Cox Green Community Centre. Sometimes we go for meal out instead. There is no charge for our fortnightly meetings at the Community Centre, although donations are welcome towards the costs of running the group.

For more details visit the Church website: www.chogs.org.uk. Alternatively you can phone the Church Office on 01628 632567, or email us:[email protected].

Newcomers are very welcome.

Marriage Preparation This is offered to all couples getting married in, or through our parish. Most attend a Marriage Preparation Day with other couples getting married in the coming year, which is shared with two other local parishes. This is usually held in the Community Centre, or St Luke’s Church, or All Saints, Boyne Hill. The day is very relaxed and informal.

If you are not getting married in church, but would be interested in attending our Marriage Preparation, do make contact with the Church Office and we will do our best to accommodate you. Details of our marriage preparation can be found on our website, as well as feedback from couples who have attended. You would be very welcome.

CELEBRATING SPECIAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES If you have a significant wedding anniversary coming up, you may like to consider having a special service in church as part of your celebrations, or special prayers and/or a blessing within a church service. This would be an opportunity to give thanks to God for your life together and renew your commitment to one another. Re-affirming your marriage vows can be included if desired.

Please contact the Revd Joan Hicks for more information on 01628 632567.

COX GREEN LUNCHEON CLUB IS 30 YEARS OLD

Yes, that’s right – the Tuesday Luncheon Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year.

It started in 1986 (soon after the new kitchen extension at the Community Centre was completed) as a joint project of the parishes of All Saints, Maidenhead, St. Edmund Campion RC Church and the Church of the Good Shepherd, Cox Green. Under the guidance of Ron Blackmore, with a team of willing volunteers from the three churches, the aim was to provide a freshly cooked two course meal, at a reasonable cost, for those living within the three parishes who were housebound or lonely through age, disability, ill health or bereavement. Thirty years on this is still our goal and the club continues weekly on Tuesdays, run entirely by volunteers from the three churches and the local community.

Thanks to generous donations from The Maidenhead Advertiser Cracker Appeal and Johnson and Johnson and Milans Limousines we are able to fund some special events to celebrate this milestone. The main one being in June with a special lunch followed by entertainment, tea and cakes. Invited guests will join our members for what promises to be a great day.

The first lunch in February 1986 was attended by 30 members, and our average attendance last year was 44. We can accommodate up to 55 members and at present have some vacancies. The club is open to people aged 60+ living within the parishes of All Saints, Maidenhead, The Church of the Good Shepherd, Cox Green, and St Edmund Campion RC Church. If you or someone you know would like to join us you can get more information from Ruby on (01628) 630703 Why not come along one Tuesday and enjoy lunch with us in a friendly atmosphere – you will be sure of a very warm welcome.

Now a plea for help

we need volunteers to join our rota of drivers to transport members to and from the club.

If you are able to help, even once a month, we would like to hear from you – contact: Don Dunning on 01628 415821 or Ruby Doughty on 01628 630703

Do you want to move with less aches and pains or reduce the discomfort of a stiff back?

You may well have been told to try Pilates before or maybe you’ve been told you need it.

Is it something you have thought about but not yet investigated?

Sometimes it just the fear of the unknown that stops us helping ourselves.

I want to remove any excuses so that you can try Pilates and see if its as good as everyone says.

You can have a free taster class, all you have to do is turn up and take part.

Let me remove the unknown. My classes take 1 hour 15mins. You will find men, women, young, old, flexible, inflexible, every shape and size at class. Pilates isn’t just for the super fit.

We start with a standing warmup then we move down onto the mat. Pilates focuses on your breath, just breathing in and out - my students say that it takes just enough concentration to stop them thinking about their daily tasks. We move, lengthen and stretch through the whole body, sometimes we use a band to assist. The key is that you work to your own pace. Slowly you will see that you are more stable or stronger in an exercise as you start to progress.

The results are more flexibility, better spinal alignment, better balance - to name just a few. I’m told that some of my clients have given up their regular visits to the Chiropractor, the Physiotherapist and the Bowen Therapist as Pilates provides the maintenance needed. Some students report better sleep, feeling lighter, more relaxed. Some report better scores in golf as they have more powerful swings now.

One thing is for sure, you will become more aware of your body, how you stand, sit, walk. This will help you reduce the chance of injury.

Whatever your goal, lets see how Pilates can get you there.

Take up this free taster class now, call me on 07917 762227 or email [email protected] .

MUSIC AND MORE AT MAIDENHEAD FESTIVAL 2016

No one is going to be bored at this year’s Maidenhead Festival, taking place in Kidwells Park on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July. A whole weekend filled with circus themed fun….here’s our roundup of the attractions you can expect to enjoy.

Providing a range of musical styles from rock n pop, to folk to good old sing-along songs, Maidenhead Festival is where it’s at this July. We have a fantastic array of entertainment for you, headlined on the Saturday by the incomparable Big Girls Don’t Cry, who featured in the hit musical Jersey Boys. They will be joined by The Dolly Parton Story as the warm-up act, fronted by Andrea Pattison, a professional singer of many years’ experience.

Festival is not only about the music but also the 60 stalls that are joining us to sell their wares, services and to support the numerous charities and community groups – including a variety of food stalls and a real-life beach in the park, a funfair and a 9-hole mini golf course.

Maidenhead Festival is organised for the community by the community, is the biggest, regularly organised, free, public event in Maidenhead and was enjoyed by almost 7,000 people in 2015.

CONSIDERING A CHURCH WEDDING? If you live in Cox Green and would like to get married in church, it may be helpful to know the procedure for those living in this parish.

Anyone who lives within the boundaries of our parish, or who is on our Church Electoral Roll, or has a ‘qualifying connection’ is entitled to be married at the Parish Church. The Church of the Good Shepherd is located in the Community Centre on Highfield Lane.

However, as our Parish Church is based in the Community Centre, we have the somewhat unusual legal situation whereby couples from Cox Green may be married either at the Good Shepherd, or in one of the following churches in our neighbouring parishes:

• St Mary's, White Waltham,

• All Saint’s, Boyne Hill,

• St Michael's, Bray,

• St John's, Littlewick Green,

• St James the Less, Stubbings.

Whichever church is chosen, couples should make contact with the Revd Joan Hicks (Vicar of Cox Green) in the first instance. She can be contacted via our Church Office on 01628 632567 or by email: [email protected].

If you would like to be married in one of our neighbouring parishes, we will make the necessary arrangements with them. The marriage service is normally taken by the Vicar from this parish, even when one of the neighbouring churches is used. Marriage preparation is also organised through our parish. Changes in Marriage Law in recent years mean that you can be married in or through our parish if you have a ‘qualifying connection’ such as:

• If one of you has been baptised and/or confirmed here

• If one or both of you has lived in the parish for 6 months or more, at any time during your life

• If one or both of you has attended worship in the parish for at least 6 months

• If your parents have lived or worshipped in the parish (during your lifetime)

• If your parents or grandparents were married in the parish.

More details about getting married in church can also be found on the church website: www.chogs.org.uk, or the Church of England website: www.cofe.anglican.org (under ‘Life Events’)
