Dear Cowern Families & Friends, “It’s the Most Won-derful Time of the Year” was recently sung in my office by a colleague and I hope that rings true for you and your family. The weeks before winter break can oftentimes look different in a school setting as chil-dren are excited for break, but also anxious about not being in the
routine that school pro-vides. We will be work-ing up until Thursday, December 22 to provide a stable environment where we celebrate the upcoming break, but also hold students ac-countable. On Thurs-day, we will be continu-ing with Cowern tradi-tion and having Holiday BINGO. I’m excited for my first experience with this fun event! My favorite moment from the last few weeks came during a classroom visit to Mrs. Swanson’s room. Students were busy learning about the cray-fish and then got to investigate them—the hands on learning opportunity was very
engaging! We also en-joyed the presentations put on by CLIMB Theatre about our envi-ronment. I hope your child enjoyed it, too. I hope that you have a wonderful time over winter break and are able to spend quality time with family and friends. Best, Dr. Jen Wilson

Please be sure to call in your child’s absence OR if they are going to be late for any reason call our at-tendance line at: 651-748-6824 (please call by 8:45 a.m.). Attention: When calling in your child’s absence, please do not leave a message saying “they are sick” or “not feeling well.” Be more specific about the absence. Let us know the type of illness your child has (i.e., flu, vomiting, stomach ache, etc.) The Health Office needs to know this information for their records. If a phone call is not received, the absence remains unexcused. If a child has 3 unexcused absences or 10 out-of-building tardies, the school will send written notification to the family and report the situation to the appro-priate county agency. The county agency will exercise progressive steps, if the unexcused absences and/or tardies continue.
Plaza Theater Movie Night Thank you to all that came to make Plaza Theater Movie Night a huge success! The winner of the bag of movie snacks is Cole Trombley in Mr. Kern’s Room.

CLIMB Theatre at Cowern Elementary School
On Wednesday, December 14, CLIMB Theatre presented our students with two performances. CLIMB Theatre, located in Inver Grove Heights, MN, is a nationally recognized non-profit company that has provided programming to K-12 schools for 40 years. CLIMB’s work is not only entertaining, it is educational. CLIMB’s theatre artists write, produce and present plays and drama classes on topics like bullying, self-control, respect, and the environment. Sponsored by the City of North Saint Paul.
CLIMB Theatre presents “PEGGY’S PROMISE,”
a play on environmental respect for grades K-2.
Synopsis of the Play:
Peggy loves to work in her dad’s garden. One day,
she gets a surprise visit from a giant worm named
Red. Red informs Peggy that he was sent from
the Worm Coalition to stage an intervention be-
cause Peggy’s dad keeps taking all their trash to
the landfill instead of recycling it! Peggy promises
to help save the worms’ future by teaching her dad
all about the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, and recycling)
and composting.
CLIMB Theatre presents “PROJECT EARTH,” a play
on environmental conservation for grades 3-5.
Synopsis of the Play:
Project Earth is a brand new play. It follows the
adventures of three classmates whose teacher
has given them an assignment to create a model
of a town and to make decisions about how to
manage resources and the waste stream of the
town. They learn how large and small choices
alike have a profound impact on not only the mod-
el town’s environment, but on their community’s
environment as well.
