Unemployment in Coventry and Warwickshire

•There are currently 13,966 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in the Coventry and Warwickshire area (Coventry: 7,687; Warwickshire: 6,099)

•This is down 17% from this time last year

•The fall was greater in Warwickshire – down 19% compared to 16% in Coventry.

•The register has fallen for nine consecutive months

•Now at its lowest level since late 2008

Unemployment in Coventry and Warwickshire

•The JSA register is now close to pre-recession levels, when unemployment tended to settle at around 12,000 – 13,000.

•At the height of the recession in August 2009, the register peaked at over 23,500. It has fallen by 41% since then.

Youth Unemployment in Coventry and Warwickshire

• There are 3,530 young people aged 18-24 claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Coventry and Warwickshire (Coventry: 1,950, Warwickshire: 1,580)

• The register has fallen for 4 consecutive months and by 21% over the past year (in Coventry by 20% and in Warwickshire by 24%)

• The register has nearly halved (49%) since its peak in November 2009

JSA on-flows in Coventry and Warwickshire

• The total for November 2013 – 3,180 - was the lowest since 2008.

Long-term unemployment in Coventry and Warwickshire

• Of greater concern is long-term unemployment in the area. There are currently 800 young people aged 18-24 who have been claiming for more than nine months (Coventry: 465; Warwickshire: 340)

• In December 2008 there were only 170• The figures has recently started to decline rapidly, having peaked at 785

in October 2012• DWP offers a range of support for these customers through our Youth

Contract (Work Experience, sector-based work academies, Wage Incentives etc)

• The table in the next slide shows the long-term unemployment trend for young people from January 2008

Long-term unemployment in Coventry and Warwickshire

• There are currently 3,240 people aged 25+ who have been receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance for more than a year (Coventry: 1,965; Warwickshire: 1,275)

• Although this figure has fallen for four consecutive months, it remains high – in November 2008 the figure was 1,255.

• The figure peaked at 3,750 in August 2012
