Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences

Course Title & University

Grand Challenges in Computational Biology: New Developments for Solving the Unsolved Problems of Computational Biology - University of Bologna Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences

Objectives

Ongoing projects aim to understand the universe and the origin of life to better help preserve and protect our planet; understanding basic mechanisms from molecular biology to systems/organism biology in order to revolutionize medicine and healthcare; to investigate our common origins and how we differentiate from each other, also in relation to environmental factors

Prerequisites for admission

Post-graduate students and researchers interested in Bioinformatics and its applications. Participants will be selected on the basis of their CVs

Relevant Information

9th edition of the Bologna Winter School in Bioinformatics. The school will cover different sessions: New Challenges in Modern Biology; Biodiversity from Genome annotation; Structural Modeling at large: is it possible?; Structural Bioinformatics; Networks and Biology; The 3-D structure of Membrane Proteins; Genome Expression and Regulation.

Course Title & University

Detecting Biological and Environmental Changes: Design and Analysis of Monitoring and Experiments - University of Bologna Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences

Objectives

How to decide what kind of analysis is most appropriate given the hypothesis of interest and how to interpret results; how to use the software PRIMER v6, including a separate Windows version of PERMANOVA accessed as an add-in to PRIMER.

Prerequisites for admission

Researchers from any field of work, with emphasis on studies in biology, ecology, and environmental sciences; post-graduates, PhD students, post-docs and researchers interested in developing skills in the design and analysis of data from monitoring and experiments. No explicit pre-requisites are needed, but a general familiarity with unvaried statistics is expected.

Relevant Information

The course will consist of lectures and practical PC exercises, for a total of 8 credit points. The achievement of teaching objectives will be evaluated during the practical sessions. The course will be organized into 3 main sections. Section 1: A General Introduction to Experimental Design (2 days); Section 2: Multivariate Analyses Using Primer (4 days); Section 3: Analyzing Multi-Variable Responses to Complex Experimental Designs Using Permanova (4 days)-
