General Secretary, ISSU, and Director,

St Andrew Centre for HRD and Counselling

Dear Friends,

We are happy to introduce opportunities for continuing education on offer for 2011 in Coonoor and other cities. We seek to extend our courses to laity, clergy, activists, and students preparing for ministry. While we offer on-site courses in theological institutions, at the St Andrew Centre for HRD and Counselling of the India Sunday School Union we continue to design new courses to meet the needs of the pastoral and educational ministry of the church. You will find courses in Christian education, pastoral care and counseling, preaching, music and worship, servant-leadership, youth ministry, theology and ethics, and so on. We will offer more courses in these areas and in particular Bible and theology in the following years. This year St Andrew faculty will travel to the USA and Sri Lanka to offer courses and lectures on the following: Spirituality, Transformation, and Pastoral Care among People with Post Traumatic Stress Disorders.

Gifted faculty, students from around the country and overseas, comprehensive and in-depth design of courses, and up-to-date course materials ensure a stimulating learning experience. Certificates of completion are given to all participants who complete the requirements. In addition assignments are graded for students who take courses for credit recognized by their respective degree-conferring institutions.

We hope you will take the opportunity to benefit from the courses on offer this year and encourage others to do so.

My colleagues and I look forward to welcoming you, your friends, and colleagues to the on- and off-campus courses.

Yours sincerely,

Ajit A. Prasadam

Counselling with Couples & FamiliesThe course will explore the question, how can families live in love and thrive in the midst of disintegrative forces and live effectively even though a dysfunctional family refuses to change? We will draw on theoretical, theological, and practical aspects of pastoral counselling with couples and families using essentially a family systems approach within a transformational understanding. Issues to be addressed will include pre-marital counselling, developmental and accidental crises in family life, abuse, problems in dysfunctional families and family enrichment possibilities, parenting and adoption, and other dimensions of pastoral counselling with families. Designed as a five-day course with self study. Prerequisite: a graduate degree in any field, a course in pastoral counselling and preferably experience in the field.

Human Development Within a Theological UnderstandingThe course will explore the question, what is a lifetime and why do we live it? Together we will seek answers from the human and social sciences and theological perspectives. Opportunities will be provided to look at one’s own growth and that of others with the aim of understanding one’s own life history, its direction, and at the same time be able to help others in their growth and development. Attention will be paid to the fundamental methodological question of the inter-disciplinary relationship between human development and Christian theology. Designed as a five-day course with readings, lectures, videos, and discussions. Prerequisite: open to counsellors, pastors, social workers, theology students, teachers, administrators, community development workers, and a graduate degree in any field.

Preaching in a Global ContextThis course, for Princeton Theological Seminary students, will focus on preaching in diverse contexts through dialogue with Indian professors and students, sermons they will preach in Indian Christian communities, as well as exposure to and interaction with the broader Indian culture. The goal is to gain some understanding of how the Christian gospel might address matters of poverty, the environment, immigration, the global economy, health care, education, and so forth in a developing nation such as India, thus enabling students to preach on these topics with integrity both abroad and at home in the North American context. This course fulfills the Practical Theology Department distribution requirements of Princeton Theological Seminary. 3 credits. Prerequisite: readings in advance and during the course.

Integrated Course in Christian Education (ICE)The course will seek to meet your need for an overview of the Bible and church history and appropriate skills to be a transformational teacher. The curriculum will include survey of the Bible, church history, a Christian philosophy of education, human development, classroom and interpersonal communication, other faiths and ideologies, and creative and innovative use of curriculums. Opportunities will be given to understand one’s integration, and develop interpreting, facilitating, and communicating skills. The Emmaus event will be studied as a model to understand the theory of transformation in Christian education. Guidelines will be explored for evaluating a curriculum for theological and educational soundness. Servant-Leadership for TransformationRobert Greenleaf’s understanding of leadership as servant-leadership has brought about a paradigm shift in the discussion on leadership. This course will explore servant-leadership for transformation from the social sciences and theological perspectives and will go beyond the initial discussion of Greenleaf’s contribution. Special attention will be given to the work of Robert E. Quinn, University of Michigan, which focuses on organizational behaviour and transformational leadership, and the work of the late James E. Loder, Princeton Theological Seminary, which explores transformation of all areas of human action, in the Divine-human interaction. The issue of transformational dynamics and finances will also be discussed. The five-day course is designed as a seminar with readings, videos, short lectures, and discussions. Prerequisite: a graduate degree in any field with leadership experience in the church or the world at large.

Creative Teaching for TransformationThis week-end workshop will discuss models of education and help you critically evaluate them to develop an approach to education that will encourage creativity and transformation. The course will help you understand transformation and how it works in relation to socialization. You will be introduced to a variety of creative teaching methods, old and new, and the stages of human development to gear your teaching not only to a particular stage of development but to engage students’ conflicts and help them stretch their minds and hearts. We will discuss the report on education in West Bengal by Amartya Sen’s Pratichi Trust (India) and go beyond it in relation to our work in Sunday

Group Activity, Servant-Leadership 2010

schools, day schools and Bible studies. Prerequisite: a graduate degree.

Church Alive for Youth in an Uncertain WorldIn the increasingly globalizing world that attracts mass allegiance to the promise of technological and economic freedom on the one hand and violent reaction in the name of religious fundamentalism on the other, congregations often feel their young people’s souls are being kidnapped. Church leaders are being forced to ask difficult but important questions about the Gospel’s power to shape human lives in such a context. What is the Gospel’s promise to young people in this kind of world? How does the Church respond to the raw emotion, often reckless passion, and deep longings for relationships within young people? How might congregations help turn the hearts of the young toward the Reign of God and the redemptive transformation of the Holy Spirit in a world of violence, idolatry, despair, and the trivialization of the Holy? In this course we will explore the biblical, theological, and human science dimensions of a practical ecclesiology focused on youth and young adults. We will use the metaphors of vocation and witness to uncover the theo-anthropological and pneumatological (i.e. Trinitarian) depths of such an ecclesiology. We will also explore how the core practices of congregational existence—worship, listening, learning, loving, serving, and advocacy—become the lived raw material for the Spirit’s transformational work among the young. Prerequisite: Open to students of theology (ideally those in the final year of BD/M.Div., M.Th., and Ph.D.), pastors, and others with a graduate degree in any field. Readings in advance and during the course.

The Theology and Ethics of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Dialogue with that of B.R.Ambedkar

To help students understand and critically assess the theology and ethics of Martin Luther King, Jr. in dialogue with that of B.R. Ambedkar in order to determine the extent to which their thought and practice can be a contemporary resources for Christian ministry. The course will focus on their theology/religion, ethics, views on nonviolence, quest for social justice, their prophetic role in their respective societies, and foundational principles that guided their lives and work. Designed as a five-day course with lectures, videos, and music of the era. Prerequisite: Open to students of theology (ideally those in the final year of BD/M.Div., M.Th., and Ph.D.), pastors, activists, and others with a graduate degree in any field. Readings in advance and during the course.

Workshop on Music and Worship Participants will explore ways that pastors, worship leaders, music directors and choirs can more fully engage the congregation in the worship of God. We will begin by looking back to the biblical Psalms as models for Christian worship. From here we will look forward to the emerging phenomenon of global music in Christian worship. Particular attention will be devoted to the African- American church music traditions. Together we will consider why it is important to sing globally in the church today and the best ways to teach these new songs to choirs and congregations. Designed as a five-day workshop with short lectures and music and worship labs. On the penultimate day the choir will perform for the public. Prerequisite: a higher secondary certificate.
