FILMa HiStory of World cinema (1931-1933)

This unique course on cinema history continues with a detailed exploration of the films produced during three vital years, 1931-1933, the height of the Depression. In America, with talkies now fully established, but with box-office takings in decline, the major studios reacted by increasing the level of violence and sex in their films, resulting in an increased backlash from conservatives which would eventually lead, in 1934, to the severe tightening of the Production Code. In this Pre-Code era, almost anything went; the films were fast, provocative, funny and daring. The superstars of the era – Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Mae West, the Marx Brothers, James Cagney, Marlene Dietrich and all the rest – were at their peak. Elsewhere, we will explore the cinema of Europe, especially Britain, France and Germany (the latter entering the Nazi era) and Asia. A feature film will screen at every session and there will be hundreds of film excerpts.

JameS cagney

The most stylised of the Hollywood super-stars, James Cagney was a song-and-dance man who earned his reputation playing pugnacious gangsters and unpredictable heroes. He has been described as the most compelling and original actor of his generation, and from his very first screen appearance, in 1930, he electrified audiences. His gangsters (The Pubic Enemy, The Roaring Twenties, White Heat) were brutal, but he could also be charming (The Strawberry Blonde). His Oscar-winning role as George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy is a fine example of his versatility, and he portrayed silent star Lon Chaney in Man of a Thousand Faces. That he was also adept at high comedy is evident from his breathtaking performance in Billy Wilder’s One, Two, Three. Three Cagney features will screen in full, along with excerpts from some extremely rare films.

pHiloSopHical conceptS in film: life, deatH and tHe QueStion of meaning

Many films are driven by significant and memorable philosophical ideas about life, death and meaning. Philosophical, especially existential and ontological, ideas can be traced through the fabric of many recent films such as Avatar, Gran Torino and The Matrix; masterpieces such as Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind and La Dolce Vita; and cult favourites like Pulp Fiction, Blade Runner and El Topo. What are these great ideas? Are the filmmakers faithful to the philosophical arguments? What is it about these philosophical ideas that make them suitable for mass dissemination, and also make them unforgettable? Join us and find out!

CREATIVE WRITINGWriting tHe real

This course offers you a rich immersion in creative nonfiction, practical tuition and instruction in composition and style, along with plenty of opportunities to write and be inspired. You'll learn how to approach nonfiction writing with imagination, discipline and lyricism. The course explores the distinctions between fiction and nonfiction and the meanings of real and truthful. It encourages writers to understand nonfiction as literature, and shows them how to employ imagination, discipline, creativity and lyricism in its composition, just as one would in fiction. Although a work of nonfiction can be every bit as literary in its diction and design as a novel, nonfiction cleaves to the actual - something that places a heavy burden of truth-telling upon the writer and reorients imagination from invention to witness.

grammar and punctuation fundamentalS

Do you have a feeling for grammar that looks and sounds right but you’re not quite sure? In this course, you’ll spend a day learning all the basic concepts and principles of grammar that you were probably never formally taught. What do ‘subject’, ‘verb/s’ and ‘predicate’ mean? What are the nine parts of speech? How do you use phrases, clauses, sentences and paragraphs to construct effective English? What is the purpose of the punctuation marks, and how do you set up bulleted lists? If you work with words and need to grasp the basics so you can identify errors and justify your corrections, this is the course for you. Join us for a day of de-mystifying a subject that hasn’t been systematically taught since 1972!

ANCIENT HISTORYancient alexandria: ligHtHouSe, library and learning

This one day course examines the archaeological and textual evidence for the ancient city of Alexandria, today largely hidden under the modern metropolis. Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE, it became one of the greatest cities of antiquity, largely due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast. Under the Ptolemaic Dynasty it received a huge lighthouse to ensure the safety of its harbour, a library which was unrivalled and the 'Mouseion', a renowned centre of learning and scholarship. Incorporated into the Roman world with the death of Cleopatra, Alexandria would remain a city of learning down to the 5th Century AD.

coming of age: auStralian literature 1988-2002

Australia and Australian literature went through an astonishing transformation in the 70’s and 80’s, which continued with intensity over the following decade. Besides ‘celebrating’ the bi-centennial, Australian literature found itself coming of age. No longer culturally cringing, writers could be proud of a rich tradition behind them. With energy and imagination, they took on global and national issues while crossing genre boundaries with great success. This course will introduce some major Australian texts and writers of the period from 1988 to 2002. While its main focus will be on fiction, poetry and non-fiction, there will also be an emphasis on texts which aim to subvert or question such generic boundaries. Other issues to be discussed will include the re-writing of Australian history from postcolonial and Indigenous perspectives and the representation of gender and sexuality in recent Australian writing.

The impact has been immediate and intense, enriching and revitalizing the Western poetic tradition. The course will also introduce the process and complexities of translation. Participants will have an opportunity to attempt simple translations themselves during weekly workshops. conSciouS ageing: Journey into your WiSdom

50% of all people, who have reached 65 years of age, are alive today. The fact that we are living longer (and retiring sooner) means that we are facing decades of life for which our culture offers us little preparation. In this course, participants will explore the question, 'Who do I want to be now that I'm grown up?' The course provides practical guidelines to make acquiring the qualities of the elder we want to be a deliberate outcome, rather than a lucky break. The transformation from 'old person' to elder requires us to review the past; extract lessons we've learned; repair unhealed wounds and fractured relationships; face our mortality and deliberately envision the life we want to lead now and the legacy we want to leave behind.

Sri lanka: a Journey tHrougH tHe Holy iSland

Since the age of the Roman Empire westerners have been drawn with fascination to the sublime beauty, wealth and cultural richness of Sri Lanka. When met with the tropical magnificence of the island early Christian explorers thought they had discovered the last earthly remnants of the Garden of Eden, far to the east dropping like a glistening pearl into the Indian Ocean. Islamic sailors called it Serendip, a word that has come to suggest extreme luck and good fortune. Today the Island’s name, Sri Lanka, translates in Sanskrit to the ‘Holy’ or ‘Blessed Island’. With the end of the country’s recent political troubles, travel through Sri Lanka is once again an opportunity not to be missed. In this tour we will experience the wonders of ancient Buddhist culture and civilisation, wildlife on a par with an African safari, and the old-world charm of Sri Lanka’s colonial heritage. This tour is for anybody who is interested in history, religions and culture of one of Asia’s least known, most beautiful, but long neglected, travel destinations.
