21. I know most of the material fairly adequately and Dr. Evans was always very helpful to make sure youunderstood what was going on before moving on to the new material. Didn't have a solid background ofprobability and stats going in but have a very solid one coming out.

22. Course is well structured and a good mixture of lecturing and in-classroom practice makes the learningexperience great.

25. Really interesting26. I've never taken statistics before though i do have a background in counting from Dicso and I feel I gained a lot of

knowledge about statistics and probability 27. The resources that Dr. Evans provided for our class were extremely helpful and effective at teaching us the

material. In class, Dr. Evans would sometimes set aside class periods where she would just have us work andshe'd check on all of us at some point to make sure we didn't have any questions about the topics walking out ofclass.

29. She is great teacher and also a nice person.

Describe one or more strengths of this course.3. As a math course there's no different interpretations regarding how things are done.4. Lots of good relevant real-world applications. I can now gamble effectively. Thanks!6. Dr. Evans is the most helpful teach I have ever met.7. The amount of extra material provided to the students is amazing. I missed some days due to being ill, but I was

able to keep up solely because of the videos to go with the lectures and the notes provided. 8. This course was very helpful in teaching me how to calculate probabilities of obscure events.9. Ideas were presented in a logical and deliberate order10. The light coursework made this class the least stressful but there was still enough work to show that we

understand the material. Many of the topics can be related to real world problems which is a big strength.

MA381-01 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

11. There's not too much homework, but when there is homework, it pinpoints important concepts. The lectures andnotes for each lecture were also incredibly useful resources to have.

13. Doing work in class with Dr. Evans there to help when needed was a great strength of the class. It gave me achance to work on the homework and quizzes in class with other classmates' help, which is how I learn the best.Yeah, group activities are definitely a strength of this course.

14. Good at covering a broad range of topics in a short amount of time. The topics covered are applicable to manyother situations.

15. Probability is without question an incredibly useful course to take. A very good professor like Dr. Evans makes itbetter. The homework is never too overwhelming and Dr. Evans is understandable.

16. Organized course with a lot of online resources on the moodle page. 18. Terrific teacher19. This class was really fascinating and cool.20. Online lecture videos were great. When homework was uncertain it was nice to hear from my professor how to

do my problems instead of wikipedia or something.21. Covers a lot of things that could or will be used in other classes. 22. Course is well structured and a good mixture of lecturing and in-classroom practice makes the learning

experience great.24. interesting class material25. Really important and useful for cs.26. This course has a lot of obvious application to the real world and because of the use of a lot of examples its easy

to find a new way to look at a kind of problem if you are having difficulty understanding it from one perspective. 27. 1. The notes that Dr. Evans provide are very easy to understand and I was effective at studying from them.

2. The grade breakdown of the class is fair and provides opportunities to improve your grade if you performpoorly on a test.3. The homework assignments are weekly, which I enjoy. I find that it's very easy to manage my time with themand gives me plenty of time to ask questions about it if I'm confused.

28. Teaching was very good, and very happy to help for anything29. The text is very good and the order to teach the knowledge is very reasonable.

It is relatively easier for us to understand some difficult knowledge.

Describe one or more ways this course can be improved.3. I have no suggestions.7. The homework worksheets were a little intense at times.8. This course does not really need to be improved. The best part about this class is working in class and getting to

ask questions as problems are being done.10. None11. The tests sometimes included some decently harsh curveball problems, but nothing too extreme.13. I really can't think of any ways to improve this course. It was very well planned out and presented. Great job, Dr.

Evans.14. Some of the topics covered were reiterations from other courses. Thus, it would have been a more beneficial

course for me if that overlap had been eliminated. The course could have been a bit more in depth and rigorous.

3

MA381-01 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

15. There could be a little shorter homework assignments. Like instead of 15 problems, maybe there can be a littleless than that.

16. Cant think of anything at the moment18. Hard if one has not yet taken MA27519. I don't think this course can be improved!20. Not impossible, but having notes early in advanced is hard to manage. Its not terrrible but maybe less notes at a

time.21. Disco would have been a good class to take before this one because of the counting.22. Some prelude to real-life level application might be enlightening.24. good enough25. I am not sure.26. Unsure, I feel I would have enjoyed some kind of project maybe? Though I think most other people would

disagree, maybe as an alternative assignment one time there could be like a small paper to a larger question butI think thats just kind of like the bonus questions that were available so maybe not

27. 1. I think it may be even more helpful if Dr. Evans gave us all of the notes for the entire class on the first day ofthe quarter. I would find that helpful, because I could look ahead to other topics in the class and have more timeto fully understand those challenging topics that may come later in the class.2. I didn't fully understand moment generating functions, or at least I feel like I should understand it in moredepth than I do. Dr. Evans should do a more thorough "proof" of the topic, because I didn't really know wherethose ideas were coming from.

Explain why you gave Diane Evans this rating.1. Teaching methods helped reinforce the material learned in class. If I was unable to grasp a subject she was

available during office hours to help me understand. 2. A very nice professor. She really cares about every students in this course, and she try to help each students to

get a good grade for this course.3. She rambled occasionally but was very genuine in her teaching of the subject and was very helpful in her

methods.4. Great at helping with homework/quizzes. Very involved after class via office hours and by email. Giving solutions

early really helped me learn material so I knew I was doing stuff wrong early on, so I had time to figure it out.Great Professor, taught great, and very enthused about probability. 10/10 would recommend. Also, saved thewhole class a couple hundred dollars by not requiring the book

5. She was one of, if not the most helpful professors I've had. She was always available, wanted to make sureeveryone was up to date and always wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable with the material. Sheloves probability and statistics and it showed in her enthusiasm while teaching, which i thought definitely helpedeveryone. One of my favorite professors.

6. All the class materials are well prepared and she spend a lot of time outside class to help us.7. She is awesome at keeping us entertained and learning at the same time. She has us do experiments like the esp

experiment. Overall she does her best to prepare an overly prepare us for what we need to know8. She always had a great attitude when it came to teaching this class and frankly made learning a lot easier due to

her enthusiasm. 9. Was very good at explaining things, focused a lot on student understanding10. Dr. Evans was probably the best professor I have had here at Rose so far. She makes class really enjoyable and

the fun little games just made it even better. I especially like the fact that she lets us use maple forintegrals/derivatives because the focus of this course should be probability, not calculus. I could definitely tell shegenuinely cared about us because she would consider any issues and compromise to make it easier on us (such asdeadlines). I do feel like she was a little too lenient on partial credit when grading however.

11. Dr. Evans was always very willing to help and always available, even when not at school. Her lectures wereto-the-point and made great use of example problems and analogies to teach the course material.

13. As stated before, Dr. Evans did a great job with this course. There were a few times where I went to her office forhelp and she wasn't there, but that was my fault for waiting until the last minute get help on and turn inassignments. Her method of working out examples on the board from the notes really helped me to understandthe material better; the in-class work with her supervising was also a big plus.

5

MA381-01 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

14. Dr. Evans is a fantastic professor. She absolutely loves both statistics and her job. It is easy to get excited aboutprobability and statistics with Dr. Evans as a teacher. She is always ready and willing to offer help. I truly enjoyher as a professor.

15. She's a professor that really gets excited for her teaching in this course. She's very understanding with homeworkand isn't a tough grader. She gives work that isn't as overwhelming as other classes.

16. She was always there for students and is constantly updating students regarding the weeks schedule.18. Hyper energetic, Dr. Evans turned what could have been an incredibly dry course into a class that was enjoyable

to attend.19. Dr. Evans might be my favorite professor. She is so enthusiastic and wonderful! She makes me so excited to come

to class and she is so understanding about everything. I think the only problem is that I think Dr. Evans worriestoo much. And I do not think she should have anything to worry about she is one of the best professors at thisschool and she works hard to make sure every student is excited to be in class. Any class Dr. Evans teaches nomatter how hard it is, I would take it! Thank you so much Dr. Evans for making this class super interesting andexciting!

20. Dr. Evans classes are always upbeat and exciting. She comes prepared with examples and its easy to follow thematerial of the course. Did a good job preparing non disco students for counting early in the course.

21. Always happy and glad to be in class. Was a bit flighty but added to the fun of the class which always made mewant to be in class. Would go through example thoroughly and fully before moving on the the next example ornext section. Would always take questions before class started to allow us to ask questions before class startedto make sure we had a full understanding before moving on. LOVED quiz/lab assignment days because they let usmove at our own pace and she let us ask questions on a personal face to face method instead of explaining themto the class. If someone would ask a question via email that pertained to the whole class she would make sureshe would send the answer to the whole class. Letters to mom are also a fun reason to make sure you attendclass. Its a fun probability game that has nothing to do with the class but is honestly fun to do.

22. Dr. Evans is a lovely professor! Clear and relaxing style of lecturing makes classroom experience very enjoyableand productive. Well organized lecture notes and homework assignment. Everything fits together perfectly. Veryhelpful outside of classroom.

24. she is nice and generous25. Dr Evans is really interesting person. She can make the course really excited.26. Dr. Evans is really helpful and enthusiastic about the class. She's always willing to go back and re explain

something if you get lost and provides tons of alternative resources which accommodate different learning stylesand make it easy to keep up with the class even if you're having a hard time one week or another.

27. Dr. Evans is one of my favorite teachers here. She's extremely energetic and I love it. She wakes you up if youneed it with her energy and enthusiasm, she can make you laugh and keep you interested in class, she is veryeffective at teaching you new topics quickly and she is more than wiling to help all of her students succeed inwhatever way they need it.

28. Very helpful, and kind29. She is really nice and always give us some extra interesting probability problems.

Explain why your learning was at this level.1. Dr. Evans was a friendly and clear teacher. The lessons were simple and organized. Homework was helpful, and

challenging, but not too challenging. Tests were fair.3. There was a lot more than just lecturing in the class. Quizzes and bonus problems were used consistently to

reinforce topics. Lecture was more that just talking to a slide as well.4. i feel like the course went at a good pace and the material was interesting5. I really enjoyed the class and the note sheets were very helpful for my understanding.6. I think that this course does a very good job at teaching students important aspects of probability and statistics in

a realistic manner, which does not involve unnecessarily memorizing equations that in a real-world scenariocould be googled or found on a reference sheet. Since as a student, I was not forced to memorize equations, thetime that I spent for this class was increasing my ability in probability and statistics, and my problem solvingability as well.

7. This class was exciting and always very interesting. Im a Mechanical Engineer taking this as a tech elective and itwas my favorite class of the quarter. Dr. Evans made the class very enjoyable.

10. The course was very logically arranged. The material built on itself as the course went on. I feel that I knewalmost nothing about probability before this course, but now I feel that I know quite a bit about it.

12. Perhaps it's just a mismatch of learning and teaching styles--I've found that I'm more of a kinesthetic learner, meaning that writing helps me understand the material. As a result of being given all the notes instead of havingto work hard to jot things down, I felt like I didn't absorb as much material as I could have.

Additionally, I am more of a structured learner and prefer being able to follow along lectures with my textbook. The number of handouts we got often made me feel overwhelmed, although I appreciated them because theycontained a lot of helpful information.

13. I found this class to be challenging and without a textbook I felt lost. 14. The class was taught very well15. Amazingly taught.

16. I was able to understand almost everything from this course with ease; only a few topics were hard tounderstand.

17. The lectures were clear and helpful, and the instructor provided a lot of additional materials to study with. Thecoursework helped solidify concepts and were very relevant to the tests.

18. I feel confident about the final19. Nothing bad.20. I loved this class Dr. Evans made it so fun!21. I have learn a lot of knowledge in probability, and learn bunch of useful rules.22. Yeahhhhh24. Dr Evans was always very helpful and willing to answer any and all questions no matter how stupid. She made it

easy to learn Probability25. Dr. Evans was very organized and provided many resources which aided in learning the material.

Describe one or more strengths of this course.1. I liked that the HW solutions were posted after we turned it in, so that we could see what we did wrong. It's also

nice because some problems I wasn't able to figure out. With the solutions, I was able to get help to figure it outbefore the exam.

I liked having access to the notes online. It was helpful since I am tired in class some times.

I thought the tests were very fair for the most part.3. The teaching was excellent and this class and the problems given were both fair and helpful in learning the

material.4. the topics were interesting and built on each other

9

MA381-02 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

5. The note sheets were really nice to have, so that I could look back at them later to get a better understanding.6. Having an equation sheet for exams (and the final) is a super strong point for this course, and in all honesty,

surprising considering this course is an MA course. I think that the equation sheet for exams allows theprofessor, and especially the student, to focus on understanding the material instead of memorizing equations. Keep in mind that the equation sheet we use for exams is one normal sized piece of paper, double-sided, so ifsomeone was doing statistics as their occupation its definitely feasible they could use a sheet like this forreference, and I assume the vast majority do use reference sheets. The equation sheet meant that the exams areabout applying the equations to solve a problem, which is more realistic than being given an easier problem andthe primary concern being whether or not you can remember the equation to use.

7. The note packets and the way we went through the material. Also all the supplemental things that were offeredonline were very helpful.

10. The notes packets used in this course were great. The take-home quizzes were nice too and it was also very nicehow some class days were just work days.

12. Math had always been quite procedural; taking classes like this and disco expose us to new ways of thinking.13. All the worksheets she gave us were usually pretty helpful when it came to understanding the material.

Sometimes if they were all filled in they weren't as helpful. I liked the fact that she gave us tons of practiceproblems and the moodle videos were always very helpful. All the bonuses were very helpful as well. Theyallowed you to spend time outside of class other than homework and challenged you to understand the material. The stories that each problem had were entertaining and helped better understand and visualize the outcome.

14. The class was very good at in class lectures that helped learning.15. The way the material is laid out is very nice, each topic leads to the next.16. Having the preprinted note sheets helped a lot because you could focus on the content of the stuff than just

writing notes down on a paper. Also, the reviews and practice exams helped a lot because they gave me extraproblems to practice on topics that were confusing. The online review of the notes helped too.

17. the material is given to us in a logical pattern and each topic builds on the last so it is easier to learn the newmethods/concepts.

19. Useful skills.20. The strength was Dr. Evans she reazlly knows how to explain material and get her point made.21. The formula is very helpful for review what I have already learn, and very helpful for exam.22. We have a great Prof 23. The learning is not only based on lecturing, Dr. Evans also let us learn the materials by ourselves in class, which

helps us improve self-learning skills.24. goes through all of the different techniques for solving and dealing with probabilty problems. 25. The material was interesting and there were a lot of old study materials.

Describe one or more ways this course can be improved.1. On exam 3, I felt that there were a couple of questions that were a bit too challenging. We had done similar

problems, but the ones on the exam were different enough to be a pretty big challenge. Maybe I was just tiredthough.

3. All around excellent course nothing to improve on material wise.4. i don't know6. I don't know.7. I thoroughly enjoyed this class all the way through.

10

MA381-02 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

10. Towards the end of the course, I felt like new topics were just being thrown out. The notes packets weren't usedtoo much and I got lost a lot within the last three weeks. Before that, I felt very comfortable with going throughthe notes packets in lecture, but then all of a sudden, that just stopped and I got confused on the topics.

12. Less handouts?13. Cut down on paper consumption. Dr. Evans already sends emails during the day. She should just send solutions

out instead of printing them every time. 14. I'm not quite sure.15. I cannot think of anything honestly.16. I don't think this course can be improved in any way.17. I think this course's biggest flaw is that there is so much overlap with Disco I. While topics such as counting are

essential for each, I think one should be a pre-req for the other so you can get to more advance topics. 19. Too many overlap with high school statistic class.20. This could be improved by just having some more review sessions i think, one for each test.21. Already very good22. Maybe we could have talk more on materials after exam224. make all the quizzes on paper, so that way students don't forget to do them. 25. Part of this course is difficult because some knowledge of counting is assumed. Learning new material and

counting at the same time was not easy to do.

Explain why you gave Diane Evans this rating.1. She was perfect, all across the board. Funny, dedicated, available at even later times than most professors, clear

at explaining, helpful....3. Dr. Evans did an excellent job everyday as she was always prepared with a lecture that would keep me interested

and engaged or she would have class work prepared that would help reinforce any concepts that had beendiscussed. Dr. Evans always went the extra mile when grading because she would always explain what may havewent wrong. She always seems to be invested in her students and is always willing to do whatever it takes tohelp.

4. did a really good job answering questions, helped me a lot when i had questions. was very prepared andgenuinely interested in the subject.

5. She was an exceptional teacher. She was always smiling in class and had a really good teaching style. If I had totake another course by her I'd gladly do it.

6. I think Dr. Evans does a good job of describing things in a plain English sort of way. She does her best to stayaway from overly technical mathematical jargon, and only uses it when she shows the class a proof of animportant concept. Her exams focus on using the equations to solve a problem, instead of having to memorizeequations, since we get an equation sheet, which I think is more realistic and also helps me to learn more aboutprobability and statistics.

7. Dr. Evans was always prepared for class and brought a fun and enjoyable attitude to class. She became one ofmy favorite teachers here at Rose and i plan on taking classes that she is teaching just to be in her class again. She was was always available for help outside the classroom, whether it be late at night through email oranytime during the day in her office.

9. Dr Evans is the G.O.A.T!10. Dr. Evans was so enthusiastic about teaching the course. She always made everything seem simple. She was very

accommodating with tests and giving extra time and moving test days around for individuals who had conflicts. She was so easy to reach for help outside of class, very good at responding to emails and always helpful andwilling to meet during office hours. It was fun how she always used games to engage the students. She also has agreat sense of humor. She is very understanding towards students as well.

12. Dr. Evans is brilliant because she's openly enthusiastic about the subject and tries hard to find ways to make classfun. For example, she puts pictures in homework, makes up funny stories, brings in things like flashing dice andgiant cards, and shows us websites like the quincunx that simulate what she's trying to teach. She also respondsvery quickly to emails and will take the time to explain things to you.

12

MA381-02 Winter Quarter - 2015-16 Diane L. Evans

13. Dr. Evans is very dedicated and super helpful. She relates to the students while explaining the topics. She jokesaround in class and is always trying to make class more interesting and asking for feedback from her students. Allthe time she spent in class going over homework was also very helpful.
