The skills of critical thinking, listening, reading, writing, and speaking will continue to be developed. Literary and expository texts will serve as models to improve reading and writing skills. Analyzing informational text will also be prioritized. Instructional practices will incorporate the integration of diversity awareness including an appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this online course utilizing Canvas as the delivery platform for instruction. 7. To write expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive compositions. [NS: 6.0]

8. To expand research skills to produce a research paper. [NS: 6.12.9]

9. To develop effective listening and speaking skills. [NS: 7.0, 8.0]

10. To apply appropriate study skills and learning behaviors across an online platform.

NovelsFirst Quarter- The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, Second Quarter- Julius Caesar, by William

Shakespeare.

Third Quarter- Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.

Fourth Quarter- Night, by Elie Wiesel

Supplementary short stories and informational text will be used in conjunction withthe course.

Writing AssignmentsThe students will be writing essays per quarter. All final drafts must conform to MLA guidelines. A sample of the format is posted in Canvas under: Announcements/MLA Sample doc.

1. All formal drafts must be typed (No Exceptions!)2. Double spaced3. Use a 12 point font.4. Typed heading and title per MLA guidelines to be presented in class. 5. Use Times Roman or Courier fonts.

Homework/Make-Up WorkWithin three days after an absence, the student must contact the teacher to determine the homework assigned during the absence and the period of time allowed for turning in the homework. When a student is absent, the educational experiences lost from class time are irretrievable and the instruction and interaction cannot be duplicated through make-up work. (CCSD Regulation 13). Make-up work represents only a portion of the daily grade; for students with approved absences, the substance and grade value of make-up work is subject to the teacher’s discretion. Students with unapproved absences are entitled to make-up work information but may not receive any credit for assignments due to their truancy.

Exception: Major assignments given with more than a week’s notification of the due date are due on that day or upon the student’s return from an absence. Any major assignment submitted after a due date may receive reduced credit.

School Wide Late Work Policy:

At SVHS, we have a standardized system for late work based on the level of the class that

students are enrolled in.

Late Work penalties are as follows:

-AP Courses: NO Late Work Accepted

-Honors Courses: 50% penalty for any Late Work

-Regular Course: 10% penalty for Late Work

Please note, no late work will be accepted after the unit test!

Evaluation Guidelines1. Student grades are determined in relationship to the course objectives stated in the district curriculum guide. Students must complete the coursework in order to earn credit.(NRS392.122; CCSD Regulation 5121)

2. For a student to meet the curricular requirements of the course, he/she must actively participate in the class in various ways, including but not limited to the following areas: listening, recording notes, responding to and answering questions, participating in large and small group discussions, and completing in-class work activities. This daily participation is part of the student’s grade and their completion of the coursework are the assessments of student progress and understanding such as tests, quizzes, papers, journals, projects, and in-class homework review. (CCSD Standard of Quality V).

Grading Policy:

90—100% B: 80—89% C: 70—79% D: 60—69% F: 59% and below

Quarter Grade Computation:

Formative 40% Summative 60%

Semester Grade Computation:

1st/3rd Quarter 40% 2nd/4th Quarter 40% Exam 20%

Discipline PolicyA list of classroom behavioral expectations will be given to you. Violation of classroom rules will result in the following:

1st violation- warning

2nd violation- parent contact

3rd violation- teacher consequence

4th violation- referral to discipline office

Possession of weapons, theft, fighting, possession or use of alcohol/narcotics, gross

insubordination (threatening or cursing the teacher) will result in immediate referral to the dean on the 1st offense and could result in RPC, Suspension, or expulsion.

Attendance PolicyAttendance is an essential part of the educational setting and lack thereof can seriously affect a student’s grade. Students must present notes to the attendance office within three days of their return from any approved absence or the absence is considered unapproved. The attendance note should state the reason for absence, the student name and student ID number, and dates of absence. Attendance notes can be emailed to [email protected].

Computer Related ResponsibilitiesAll students are required to complete the Acceptable Use Policy portion of the online registration process in order to have network access.

Do not change desktops, alter or download programs or otherwise tamper with the computer system or equipment in any way.

Any tampering with the configuration of the computer will result in an immediate dean’s referral.

Playing computer games and/or using the Internet is a privilege.

Students who commit intentional damage to school computers and mobile devices will be responsible for the cost of replacement of the item.

If an accidental situation occurs with a computer/mobile device, Sierra Vista will cover the first repair. Any additional occurrences will be the responsibility of the student.
