UFSC has a very well established “study buddy” system that helps with the integration of foreign students into the local environment. They will pick you up at the airport, invite you to our welcome day, and organize activities throughout the whole semester.
VISA (Non-Brazilian citizens): Foreign citizens who are subject to visa requirement are obliged to apply for a visa prior to their entry into Brazil at an authorized Brazilian embassy. A visa is not required for Mercosur citizens. It takes some time for you get a visa, so don’t forget to apply on time!
Calculation of ECTS credits
• 1 ECTS credit equals 25 work hours; in reality, we use the rule of 10:1, which means that 1 course lesson (=1 hour) gives 0.1 ECTS credits, assuming a preparation factor of 1.5.
• The ECTS calculation includes scheduled lessons, obligatory home assignments and exams.

Relational Methods in Sociology
To be confirmed
2018-2 This course aims to introduce relational sociology as an emerging intellectual movement within contemporary sociology. After briefly studying relational thinking in other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, psychoanalysis and political science, classical sociologists such as G. Tarde, E, Durkheim, G. Simmel and M. Weber will be discussed in relation to this approach, as well as well-established and compatible social thinkers such as H. Becker, H. Blumer, B. Lahire, B. Latour and G.H. Mead. The central part of the course will be based on the critical analysis of the main relational approaches and theories in contemporary sociology, such as the ones influenced by P. Bourdieu (M. Emirbayer), pragmatism (F. Dépelteau, O. Kivinen and T. Piiroinen, P. Selg), the work of H. White (J. Fontdevilla, J. Fuhse), critical realism (M. Archer, P. Donati), and the eclectic approach of N. Crossley. Each theory will be discussed based on empirical illustrations.

Research Synthesis in Agroecosystems and Biodiversity
PGA410037 Every 2nd semester of the year
Why synthesize data from fragmented sources that have already been collected? How to integrate and utilize the full potential of such data, addressing novel questions that enable a more robust understanding of biodiversity, ecosystems and production processes? During the course, students will plan and carry out a research synthesis of their own choice, under the professor’s guidance and drawing on the constructive feedback from their peers. Topics include: sourcing, selection and analysis of fragmented evidence that enable the testing of coherent hypotheses of broad scope, high priority, and that support decision making on biodiversity and ecosystems management and conservation; the importance of synergies and tradeoffs among Biodiversity’s Contributions to People for the stewardship of multifunctional and resilient ecosystems; brief introduction to various research syntheses approaches; estimation of the potential to generalize conclusions from research syntheses; estimation of contextual factors that limit the potential for generalization; inference of causality; complementarity between qualitative and quantitative aspects to understand social-ecological processes and assess the broader impacts of decision making.

Emulsion and Miniemulsion Polymerization Processes
ENQ410003 3rd trimester of the year
Emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization processes are versatile processes for obtaining submicrometric polymeric particles with a variety of applications, ranging from latex for paper and cellulose to polymeric nanoparticles used for controlled release of drugs. The polymers obtained via emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization are products defined by the process, what means that their properties are determined during the polymerization process. The focus of this course is on the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of emulsion and miniemulsion polymerization, what allows to manipulate the process conditions in order to optimize the process and obtain new products with improved qualities.
