College Credit Now (CCN)Courses with the CCN designation are taught by teachers at North Salem High School who have been approved by Chemeketa Community College to teach college-level courses. By completing these courses, high school students are able to receive college credit.

Willamette PromiseWillamette Promise courses are an overlay into existing high school courses. Teachers use the college’s learning standards and assessments to determine a student’s eligibility for credit within the high school class. The outcomes are an overlay to multiple high school classes from general requirements to AP.

International Baccalaureate Credit OptionsAfter enrolling in IB courses, students can earn college credit by taking exams in the spring. Each college or university and in many cases, each department within those colleges, decides what amount of credit and/or advanced standing is given for IB exams. Why International Baccalaureate?International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP)The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is a two-year program of studies offered in over 4954 high schools in 153 countries. Each school shares a common curriculum and external assessment process based on world-class standards which prepare students for successful university experience and for life in a global society.

Nearly all higher education institutions in the United States will consider performance in the IB Diploma Program for admissions or other factors, including granting course credit, advanced standing, scholarships or financial aid. Challenging classes, development of time management and study skills, highly motivated teachers and students and the requirement of social service activities are some of the many reasons that students benefit from the program.

North High offers numerous courses within the IB Program where students may receive college credit. After enrolling IB courses, students can earn college credit by taking exams in the spring. Each college and university decides what amount of credit and/or advanced standing is given for IB exams. The amount of credit varies from institution to institution.

SKPS HS Embedded Honors

Definition:Embedding an Honors Option in general education courses allows every student the opportunity to earn honors designated credit while earning content area credit within the same classroom. Students choose to pursue the opportunity to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency on specific assessments/tasks to earn honors credit by the end of the course.

Which Courses Will Carry Embedded Honors Option?• English 9, 10, 11, 12

• Algebra I, Geometry

• World Social Sciences

• US Social Sciences

• Dual Language Social Studies

• US Gov and Civics, & Economics

• Physics and Chemical Systems

• Biological Systems

• Chemistry

Earning Honors Credit in a Class: • Each course will differ with exact requirements for earning Honors credit. The requirements for each class will be

listed in the course syllabus and communicated to Parents/Guardians at the beginning of the term.

• Students can decide to work towards Honors credit at any point in the term. Teachers are encouraged to include the first opportunity for students to indicate this choice by asking students to notify the teacher after reading the syllabus, which will outline the exact requirements for earning the Honors credit.

-This initial indication will be used to early-identify students but will not prevent others from choosing to pursue Honors credit later in the term.

-If the student wants to choose to work towards Honors credit later in the term, but opportunities for Honors assignments have passed, the student will need to work with the teacher to implement one of the following:

•determine a supplemental honors option.

•re-work a previous assessment/task with the honors option.

-If a student meets all of the Honors criteria at the end of the term but did not signal this formally, the student may still choose to earn Honors credit.

-Students will not be put into a separate course for Honors. Teachers will continue to address the entire class with the Honors Options as summative assessments/tasks are presented. Teachers will also continue to encourage students to try the honors option whether or not they have formally opted into the credit.

• Students may choose, and should be encouraged, to complete Honors Options on assessments even if not formally opting into honors credit.

• Students may opt out of earning honors credit at any point, but teachers should conference to determine if students need more support.

• All students within the course will meet the same grade level standards. Students may receive an A in the regular course and not access Honors. Students demonstrating an honors option will demonstrate deeper application of the standards. The Honors Option will NOT assign substantially more work than other students in the course.

• TAG Considerations: TAG students may also require adjustments not only to rigor but to the rate of learning. Though Honors is not synonymous with acceleration, some TAG students may require acceleration (compacting of standards to increase the pacing of class) to meet their individual TAG plans.

French I FF201S1/FF201S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This course is designed to introduce the student to the French language and the culture of some French speaking nations. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be introduced. Communication in French will be stressed. Oral production will consist of isolated words and learned phrases within very predictable areas of need. Vocabulary is sufficient only for handling simple, elementary needs and expressing basic courtesies. Utterances rarely consist of more than two or three words and show frequent long pauses and repetition of interlocutor’s words. Speaker may have some difficulty producing even the simplest utterances. Some speakers will be understood only with great difficulty.

Prerequisite: None

French II FF301S1/FF301S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This is an intermediate course for the student who has completed one year of high school French. Activities will focus on reinforcing the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The student will be able to satisfy partially the requirements of basic communicative exchanges by relying heavily on learned utterances but occasionally expanding these through simple recombinations of their elements. Students will be able to ask questions or make statements involving learned material. Students will show signs of spontaneity although this falls short of real autonomy of expression. Speed continues to consist of learned utterances rather than of personalized situational adapted ones. Vocabulary centers on areas such as basic objects, places, and most common kinship terms. Pronunciation may still be strongly influenced by first language. Errors are frequent and, in spite of repetition, some speakers will have difficulty being understood even by sympathetic interlocutors.

Prerequisite: French I

French III FF401S1/FF401S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 11-12

This is an intermediate course for the student who has completed two years of high school French. Activities will focus on reinforcing the four major language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The intermediate level is characterized by the speaker’s ability to: create with the language by combining and recombining learned elements, though primarily in a reactive mode; initiate, minimally sustain, and close in a simple way basic communicative tasks; and ask and answer questions. The student will be able to handle successfully a limited number of interactive, task-oriented and social situations. He/she can ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and maintain face-to-face conversation, although in a highly restricted manner and with much linguistic inaccuracy. Within these limitations, the student can perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases. Vocabulary is adequate to express only the most elementary needs. Strong interference from native language may occur. Misunderstandings frequently arise, but with repetition, the speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors.

He/she can ask and answer questions and participate in simple conversations on topics beyond the most immediate needs; e.g., personal history and leisure time activities. Utterance length increases slightly, but speech may continue to be characterized by frequent long pauses, since the smooth incorporation of even basic conversational strategies if often hindered as the speaker struggles to create appropriate language forms. Pronunciation may continue to be strongly influenced by first language and fluency may still be strained. Although misunderstandings still arise, the speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors.

Spanish I FS201S1/FS201S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This course is designed to introduce the student to the Spanish language and the culture of some Spanish speaking nations. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be introduced. Communication in Spanish will be stressed. Oral production will consist of isolated words and learned phrases within very predictable areas of need. Vocabulary is sufficient for handling simple, elementary needs and expressing basic courtesies. Utterances usually consist of two or three words and show frequent pauses and repetition of interlocutor’s words. Speaker may have some difficulty producing the simplest utterances, some speakers will be understood only with difficulty. Listening, reading, and writing proficiency will be slightly higher.

Prerequisite: None

Spanish II FS301S1/FS301S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 9-12

This is an advanced beginner’s course for the student who has completed one year of high school Spanish. Activities will focus on reinforcing the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The student will be able to satisfy partially the requirements of basic communicative exchanges by relying heavily on learned utterances but occasionally expanding these through simple recombinations of their elements. The student can ask questions or make statements involving learned material and shows signs of spontaneity although this falls short of real autonomy of expression. Listening, reading, and writing proficiency will be slightly higher.

Prerequisite: Spanish I

Spanish III FS401S1/FS401S2 Fine/App Arts Credit=1.0HECC: Yes NCAA: Yes Fine & Applied Arts : Yes Grade Level: 10-12

This is an intermediate course for the student who has completed two years of high school Spanish. Activities will focus on reinforcing the four language skills of reading, writing speaking and listening. The student can ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and maintain face-to-face conversation, although in a highly restricted manner and with much linguistic inaccuracy. Within these limitations, the students can perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases. Vocabulary is adequate to express only the most elementary needs. Strong interference from native language may occur. Misunderstandings frequently arise, but with repetition, the speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors.

Prerequisite: Spanish II

This is a year-long course for the student who has completed three years of high school Spanish. Activities will focus on reinforcing the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The student will be able to handle successfully a variety of uncomplicated, basic and communicative tasks and social situations. The student can talk simply about self and family members, ask and answer questions and participate in simple conversations on topics beyond the most immediate needs; e.g., personal history and leisure time activities. Utterance length increases slightly, but speech may be continue to be characterized by frequent long pauses and linguistic inaccuracy. Pronunciation may continue to be strongly influenced by first language and fluency may still be strained. Although misunderstandings still arise, the speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors.

The process begins with the resident, or assigned school. Parent or guardian obtains an In-District Transfer request form from either their resident school or the Office of Elementary/Secondary Education. Forms are not available online or at other locations. The completed form is returned to the resident school.

For middle and high school students, if a transfer is desired within a school year, the transfer request form must be submitted between November 1 and November 30.

If the transfer is desired for the following school year, the request form must be submitted between March 1 and March 31.

The principals of both the resident school and the requested school separately review and approve or deny the request. If the request is approved by both principals, parents are mailed a copy of the approved form notifying them of the decision. The response time on transfer requests can vary but generally takes about one week.

If parents disagree with a decision on a transfer request, there is an appeal process. A letter of appeal must be written to the appropriate director of high school education. Be sure to include a copy of the In-District Transfer request and explain the reason you disagree with the decision. Please add any additional information you feel the director would need to make a decision. The director will respond in a letter detailing their decision. The director’s decision is final, and no further appeals can be submitted.

Please note: Bus transportation is not provided for students who attend school on an In-District Transfer.

For more information or questions about the In-District Transfer process, please contact the Office of Secondary Education at 503-399-2636.
