I probably should never quote Madonna in the Courier (or anywhere else for that matter!) But Mindy and I were watch-ing the movie Evita not long ago and a line stuck with me from one of the songs sung by Eva Peron (played by Madonna):
Where do we go from here? This isn’t where we intended to be. We had it all. You believed in me; I believed in you.
Immediately I drifted off in my mind to that great Bible verse that declares that the gift of everlasting life is given to “whoever believes in him,” meaning Jesus (John 3:16). And I thought of how dynamic it is to come to believe in a person. Take Eva Peron, for example. On stage, if Andrew Lloyd We-ber’s depiction is correct, she reflects how she and Juan Peron had entwined their lives together, each believing in the other. Once they met, for each of them, their futures were dependent on one another. His destiny was to become President of Argentina; her destiny was to become Argen-tina’s first lady. A direction was set, a course was taken, a journey began once they met. Surely this gives us some in-sight into what it means to believe in Jesus.
I’m afraid that, for some, believing in Jesus is not a very dy-namic thing. For them hardly a decision is made out of con-sideration of the will or teachings of Jesus; hardly a thought is taken captive by the Savior; hardly a value matches the values of our Lord. For them, believing in Jesus is just some Sunday School thing that makes you look good with the peo-ple at church, but it has no real bearing on life. Kind of like belief in that jolly old fellow who we sing so much about and hear so much about this time of year. No, believing in Jesus is not like believing in Santa Claus or good luck or karma. Be-lieving in Jesus means entwining your life in his, adopting his values as yours, accepting his mission as yours–not the mis-sion to die on the cross, that was unique to Jesus, but the mission of bringing God to man.
We come to Christmas. What joy! Joy because of the one in whom we believe. One whose greatness far exceeds the
greatness of the President of Argentina, or any President. This Christmas believe in Jesus. Believe in his Nativity; believe in his teachings; believe in his miracles; believe in his lord-ship. Look for his sandal prints and deliberately put your feet into those prints. Walk with him. Don’t believe in yourself–
whatever you do don’t believe in yourself. And don’t believe just in the spirit of Christmas, or the spirit of goodwill. Be-lieve in the Christ of Christmas, and you will never perish but have everlasting life.
Blessings,
Pastor Dave Fenska, Interim Senior Pastor

elder’s note & information
SESSION CORNER:
Keeping the Congregation informed! Submitted by Elder John Beauman
VISION DEVELOPMENT: Session held its last “Vision Development” meeting in November, bringing that series of meetings offi-cially to a close. Much of the associated conversation was based on the Rev. Tim Keller’s book, Center Church. The process, under the guidance of Pastor Dave as Moderator, has helped Session to think about the mission and future of Covenant Pres-byterian Church. The process proved helpful to the PST as they evaluate and interview potential candidates for the position of Senior Pastor. All of which raised the question, “now what?” The “now what?” will be the focus of Session going forward. Our continuing goal is to reach people for Christ as the best way to glorify God, and grow our church!
CHURCH EXECUTIVE POSITION: Pastor Dave, with Session’s concurrence and approval, endorsed the position of Church Execu-tive as being in the best interest of the church and its staff during this period of transition. Elder John Beauman will continue in this role throughout the transition to a new Senior Pastor. Basically, John is the elder-spokesman for the Session. Staff and ministry leaders can go to either Pastor Dave or John with their questions or concerns. Between Pastor Dave and John, an effort will be made to address every concern, and when necessary, as dictated by our By-Laws, we’ll bring the whole Session into the discussion.
Lycée International de Los Angeles (LILA): Two information meetings were held in November to explain a pending agreement with LILA to share our school facilities, including the financial benefits to Covenant Christian School (CCS). Since this is being written before November’s Session meeting, the congregation will be informed of Session’s decision during the pre-worship announcements. One important consideration, if approved, is that it affords an opportunity to invite LILA families to seasonal church events, and our Wednesday evening family night.
COURIER: Feedback was solicited from the congregation regarding the Courier. Noted below is a portion of one such response that says it all. You still have an opportunity to share your viewpoint via [email protected], regarding the Courier format and contents for 2015.
“The Courier is informative. At Covenant, we have so much going on!! I would have a difficult time trying to keep track of it all without the Courier. It both tells me what’s coming up and provides feedback on how past events went. I especially appreciate the updates from the Pastor, the Session and the PST. I am highly interested in what is happening with our boards and any decisions being made by those in positions of authority. I have been very encouraged by reading about the vision casting meetings held by session and, of course, the exciting progress made by our PST. I depend on the Courier to feel communicated with about these important topics.”

CPC MEN’S & WOMEN’S RETREATS CPC Ladies "Alive in Christ!" On Nov. 8, at the Chapman Chapel in Orange, women of all ages were blessed by Colos-sians and grew in their relationship with Christ. Nancy Van Den Berg was our speaker and the Spirit was with us. Throughout the day, we were enriched by teaching, music, fellowship, tea and scones, food and more food, worship and the gifts of the Spirit. Our thanks to all who attended and to everyone who helped coordinate this wonderful event.
CPC Men "Faith-Filled Leaders!"
The men at CPC enjoyed a weekend of spiritual growth and relaxation… well… if you consider games, zip line into the lake, horse back riding, jeep tours, and rifle and shot gun range relaxing!
Billie Archie gave a strong message about Faith-Filled Leadership and gave the men a lot to “bring home” with them. Great food, wonderful fellowship and other activities made for a fantastic weekend!

to be HIS HANDS Trudging Through Mud?
I imagine that many of you have felt this way recently as you've grieved the loss of a loved one, waded through endless pages of a loan or college application,
repeated tedious physical therapy exer-cises or struggled in an unfulfilling job. I hear you! Life is difficult and sometimes
it feels like we're slogging in mud.
The responsibilities of Steve's job as Training and Competency Manager can leave him feeling a bit "muddy" at the end of a day. Being ultimately responsi-ble for the training and competency of all pilots is a lot of mud to wade through. I have been sensing the added stress of recent "peace and order" situa-tions as well as the grim reality of the lack of potential teachers in our school's "pipeline" for next year. However, if I focus on what God is doing, I am en-couraged.
Just last month, four Scripture dedica-tions occurred within the Enga language group. The book of Mark and the Abra-ham Story (Gen 11:27-25:11) were re-leased in four formats: Audibible, mem-ory card (MP3 files), Touch Screen Phone App, and Print.
These were released in four different locations in PNG where the Enga lan-guage is spoken. We continue to pray
that these Scripture portions would en-courage the Enga people in their faith journeys.
Our colleagues, Adam and Martha Boyd, have been coordinating the translation effort among the Enga people. V i s i t t h e i r b l o g a t pngboyd.blogspot.com.au for a detailed report. You will be encouraged as I have been.
I confess there are times I feel like I am walking in mud, but my path becomes firm as I dwell on the true picture - God is at work in your life and mine. He is at work in the lives of Papua New Gui-neans. I'm grateful for this truth and I'm grateful for you! May you experience His strength and presence in the midst of your difficult tasks this month.
We value your prayers. Please lift the Enga people before the Father this month as they interact with their new Scripture portions. Pray for the dire
need for teachers for this next school year. Pray that Steve and I would finish our last six months of this present field term well. Have a great month,
Tracy & Steve Geis

SUPPORT & SERVICE
Not everyone may know that the church has two funds to assist those in financial crisis. The Saint Stephen’s Fund is for members and the Benevolence Fund is for those closely associ-ated with the church or one of its members. These two funds also provide monies to purchase the food for the meals that are prepared each week for our shut-ins by Bev Price, Dave McClellan and a crew of volun-teers. While donations to the funds can be made at any time by specifying your gift for this purpose, support is also pro-vided three times a year by offer-ings taken at services such as Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and Maundy Thursday. The recent economic downturn has affected many, resulting in an appreciable drop in the bal-ances of these two funds. This ministry is a wonderful opportu-nity to show compassion to those who have a critical, unex-pected need for assistance. These funds are not meant to cover long-term issues, but give the recipient a helping hand when they have run out of op-tions to cover an urgent need. Please remember this ministry when you are able, as well as when attending the services that take offerings to support it. Contact the church for more.

CHRISTMAS CORNER
He was born in an obscure village
The child of a peasant woman
He grew up in another obscure village
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirty when public opinion turned against him
He never wrote a book
He never held an office
He never went to college
He never visited a big city
He never travelled more than two hundred miles
From the place where he was born
He did none of the things
Usually associated with greatness
He had no credentials but himself
He was only thirty three
His friends ran away
One of them denied him
He was turned over to his enemies
And went through the mockery of a trial
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves
While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing
The only property he had on earth
When he was dead
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend
Nineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of the human race
And the leader of mankind's progress
All the armies that have ever marched
All the navies that have ever sailed
All the parliaments that have ever sat
All the kings that ever reigned put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on earth
As powerfully as that one solitary life Adapted from a sermon

CPC UPDATES
FOR THE PERIOD ENDING: OCTOBER 31, 2014
Revenue did not keep up with expenses this month so we had a short fall of $10,411. Revenue and expenses year- to- date is the lowest we have had the last four years as you will notice in the chart of the month. We will need to watch this very closely as this cut into our reserves by over $18,000 in just one month.
Total cash and investments decreased for the month by $18,644 resulting in a balance of $498,873. Net cash re-serves are $298,703 down by $13,380 at the end of the month. Restricted funds also decreased by $5,264 leaving a balance of $200,169.
The chart of the month is Revenue and Expense Comparison for the last four years. It shows how far our revenue has slipped. The fact that expenses have also stayed low kept us in a positive condition for the fiscal year so far.

Greetings to all Covenant folks. This update is very short since the November issue of the Courier just came out. On the weekend of November 22/23 your PST team will be visiting two ministerial applicants to hear them preach in their current church. They are located in TWO of our 50 states!! Now that doesn't tell you much, but in time we hope to disclose those locations.
Please bear with us, have patience, and most important----pray for us as we continue our search for our new Shepherd of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

COURIER SURVEY:
Thank you for picking this up and reading
it...hopefully!
If you receive this Courier via “snail mail,” next month’s copy may not get to you as we are trying to conserve our resources and print costs (not to mention a few trees).
If you would like to receive the Courier via email, please write to [email protected] or respond to the reply card coming to you shortly in the mail.
What do you want to see in the Courier?
When you think of the Courier, what kind of informa-tion would you like to read about? A “church-life” magazine, a calendar of events and reminders, an outreach tool for visitors, reflections of past events and things to come, testimonies and spiritual jour-neys… what would you like to see?
Please let us know...we want to make this news-letter as beneficial and personal, both spiritually and logistically, to the congregation and visitors alike.
