CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS- Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited toexhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at home at the 2013 WarrenCounty Youth Fair on Saturday, August 10th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. Inaddition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from theNew York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories rangefrom creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules forspecific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell UniversityCooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thurs-day. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm atthe fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judgedbased on the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibi t against another(referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Someexhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helpsyouth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confi-dence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AMto 4:00PM at the fairgrounds. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. For moreinformation on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative ExtensionEducation Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/warren

CAMBRIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM THIRD SUMMER PROGRAM.Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. the Cambridge Historical Socie ty & Museum will hold the thirdn a series of summer Wednesday night programs at the Museum on Broad Street. Mr. Ken Gottry, aocal historian, will speak of his project - the history of the Yellow Brick Road celebrating its 100th

nniversary. In the 1800s the flooding of Blairs Brook (now Owl Kill) made Main Steet and Springtreet impassable for days even after the briefest of showers. The East End and West End werehysically, politically, and economically separated. In 1913 the village voted to pave Main Street

with yellow bricks. While the project served its ultimate goal of uniting the two communities, it alsomphasized their long-held sense of independence. Following in his fathers footsteps, Ken Gottry, araveling computer consultant, dabbles in local history. Ken will relive the villages history, culminatingn the construction of the Yellow Brick Road by his great grandfather, William Hitchcock. Come outn August 14 at 7:00 p.m. and hear Ken relive this important event in the history of Cambridge. The

Museum will open at 6:00 p.m. for tours with refreshments to follow.

THE FLAMINGOES ARE BACK! A FUN FUND RAISER!Residents of Washington County and the surrounding area should keep their eyes open for a waywardlock of pink flamingoes that just might show up on a front lawn in your neighborhood! The flamingoesre on the move to benefit the Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill in

Granville. If you wake up to find the flock resting in front of your house, the only way to make them

My name is Ana and Im a3yr. old calico who wasbrought to Second Chanceafter I was found as apregnant stray. Im a littleshy at first but once I get toknow you, Im friendly andmellow. I also have a bit of

an independent streak! I would be fine with othercats or children, but Im not too sure about dogs.If I sound like the girl for you, please come andvisit me and give me my forever home!Hi Im Ashley and Im a pretty and petite little

girl. I can be a little shy until I get to know you.Once Im comfortable withyou though, I love attentionand to be petted. I have a bitof an independent streak in meso Id be most happy in aquiet home that allows me tobe an indoor/outdoor kitty.Since I came to Second Chanceafter living on a farm, that might be just what Ineed again. So if you are looking for a kitty tocomplete your life and I sound perfect for you, please come by and meet me!Hi my name isRocky! I am a 6 month old AmericanShelter Dog. I came to Second Chance because Iwas too much for my previous guardian to handle.

I love attention and to playwith all sorts of toys! I wouldreally like a home where I canhave someone to run around andplay with and I love the water!!I can go to a home with children

6 years or older; cats and dogsupon introduction. If I soundlike the guy for you, please come see me at SCAC!!Hi my name is George! Im a very friendly andaffectionate two-year-old Coonhound. I came toSecond Chance Animal Center from another shelterthat was too full. I long for afamily who will spend timewith me taking me for longwalks and hikes! Once weare done, Id love to snuggleup with you on the couch atthe end of the day. I wouldprefer a home with a fencedin yard when Im not on my walks. I can share myhome with kids 8 years old and older. I can be alittle picky about four-legged companions, so Iwill want to be your one and only. As a dog thathas lived outside my entire life, my new familywill need a little patience while I learn to live inside, but I promise Im worth it. Im a good boy with alot of love to give and I deserve a chance to

experience life with someone who will love meback.

NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washing-ton County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores inWashington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in trans-portation are documented by period photographs and artifacts.Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers whoalso remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences.Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the ChamplainCanal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south toAlbany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved toaccommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways todispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included woodenboxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, nocorrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothingof plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and dis-tance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores

would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cartwith horse could be rented by an individual or small businessfrom a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoachescould carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and somemail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general storesprovided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stockingthe General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednes-days and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through No-vember. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the WashingtonCounty Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, NewYork. For further information call 518-747-9108 or [email protected].
