YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM BENEFITS FROM FUNDS RAISED BY HUDSON
RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION As part of its ongoing Community He-
roes Campaign, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) recently pre-
sented a check in the amount of $250 to Youthbuild, a program sponsored by theTroy Commission on Economic Opportunity. Each month, HRCCU chooses a local
not-for-profit community organization and donates five dollars for each new mem-
ber that joins or existing member that upgrades a service. To date, HRCCU has
donated thousands of dollars to local organizations. In YouthBuild programs, low-
ncome young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their
GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable hous-
ng in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community
service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth commit-
ted to each other’s success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through
their homebuilding and other community service. At exit,
they are placed in college, jobs, or both. Hudson River Community Credit Union’s
mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing
quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit
Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and
Cohoes. The Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and gov-
erned by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or busi-
nesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and RensselaerCounties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family
members are eligible to join the credit union. For more information, call 518-654-
9028, 1-800-824-0700 or visit hrccu.org.
AWARD GIVEN- Sheriff Jack Mahar is proud to receive the Certificate of Apprecia-
tion from New York State Marine Corps Commandant Timothy M. Forbes for out-
standing support of the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots. The
Rensselaer Public Safety Building was one of the official drop-off locations for Toys for
Tots 2013. Chief Bly donated his 2014 raise of $430.00 and the officers union matched
that $430.00(total $860.00). Sergeant Sauer took the money and through the use of
coupons, manufacturer and store rebates purchased $1,600.00 worth of toys. Toys
for Tots is one of the most recognizable charitable organizations in New York. It is run
by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and is supported by thousands of civilian volun-
teers. “This organization allows people in the community to give back to those less
fortunate,” said Mahar “Toys for Tots focuses on the importance of “giving” especially
to those less fortunate at this time of year.” Sheriff Mahar is also a member of the Troy Detachment Marine Corps League. Toys for Tots started in 1947 by a Marine Reserv-
st and his wife for needy children at Christmastime. Since then, more than half a
billion toys have been distributed to millions of children.

(from their website) Rising Sun Farm is a sustain-
able family farm in upstate New York. We primarilyraise 100% pure bred, registered Black Angus cattlethat are grass-fed and raised using superior grass-
fed beef product which has drawn the attention ofconsumers throughout the Tri-state area. Our BlackAngus beef products are of a higher quality and
more taste than store bought beef due to the care-ful practices and standards we use to raise our ani-mals as well as the care put into processing the
products. Our cattle live a comfortable, low stresslife and they are given no artificial growth hormonesor antibiotics. We also produce farm fresh eggs,
chicken and pork products using similar sustain-able methods. All images featured on our websiteare of Rising Sun Farm and our products produced
from the farm.
The Farm is owned and operated by Levi Cahanwith partners Jeffrey and Sally Cahan. At a youngage, Levi developed a passion for agriculture and
set a goal to own and operate his own farm. Leviattended Cornell University to obtain a BachelorsDegree in Animal Science and Masters Degree in
Agriculture Education. Levi spent a semester in NewZealand studying rotational grazing and noticed thebenefits of feeding animals on an all grass-fed diet.
This prompted his search for the perfect farm, whichhe found in Whitehall, New York.
Creating sustainability for the small-farming com-munity is vital. In order to raise awareness and edu-cation, Levi teaches high school Agriculture in the
Schuylerville, New York area. In addition to educat-ing the next generation farmers, it is important thatconsumers are equally knowledgeable about their
Rising Sun Farm products.
When you call or email, you’ll talk to a farmer (or more likely the answering machine– we’re outside working. But don’t worry, we will call you
back – just make sure to leave a message).
“This is in response to a request you put in your papers about readers letting you know our favorite
locally owned businesses. My favorite locally owned business is rising sun farm in Whitehall,Washington County, New York. They have the very
best beef I’ve tasted in a long time: 100% black angus, all grass fed and dry aged. they also sell all natural pork, chicken and eggs.” J.C.

This week’s ag report is sponsoredby:
New Way to Evaluate Seed for Your FarmCredit: Rhonda Brooks, Farm Journal Seeds & Production EditorIsmail Cakmak expects the concept of seed fertilization to be developed by the agricultural indus-try and used by farmers, much like soil and foliar fertilization practices are used today. Cakmak, abiological scientist at Sabanci University in Turkey. What if you could look at a bag of corn, soy-bean or wheat seed and know the nutrients each kernel of seed contained--before you purchasedany of those hybrids and varieties for your farm? If this sounds like a pipe dream, i t’s not. Scientistsare already figuring out how seed nutrient levels affect crop productivity. Ismail Cakmak, for one, says seed-contained macro- and micro-nutrients are key factors affecting seed germination, seed-ling emergence, uniformity of emergence and plant yield."Today, everybody analyzes soil samples and plant-leaf tissue to see the impact of soil fertilization, but no one pays attention to the seed nutrient profile and they need to," says Cakmak, professor of biological sciences and bioengineering at Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey. "When seeds withlow nutrient density are sown, the ability of the new crop to withstand environmental stress factorsin the early growth stages is often impaired."Cakmak was the keynote speaker for the inaugural Exceed the Seed Symposium, hosted byAgriThority, this week in Chicago. Cakmak spoke on the topic of "Valued Nutrition Starts wi th theSeed" and provided a number of examples that demonstrate the importance of seed nutrients oncrop outcomes. For instance, Cakmak’s research shows that: Soybean seeds with a low concentration of borontend to have permanently damaged seed embryos, which can prevent germination or producedefective seedlings. The availability of phosphorus very early in a wheat plant’s development ismore critical to helping farmers achieve good crop yields than the supply of phosphorus at latergrowth stages. This highlights the importance of seed phosphorus reserves. Cakmak adds thatadverse effects resulting from the lack of adequate seed-based nutrients cannot always be re-versed with soil-applied nutrients, especially micronutrients. Improved food quality. Some seedindustry members attending the Exceed the Seed symposium see an immediate opportunity to putCakmak’s research to work."We’re overlooking a lot of things in plant physiology that could better our seed production workand result in higher-quality plants," says Mike Haedt, a partner in the Wisconsin-based Partners inProduction. The company markets corn, soybeans, alfalfa, cover crops and products for enhancingforages. "This is a whole new way to think about growing food," Haedt adds. That latter point, the potential for producing plants containing more and better nutrients for humanhealth, is what drives much of Cakmak’s enthusiasm for seed research, some of which has beenfunded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He says zinc deficiency alone is responsible for500,000 child deaths worldwide each year.Eventually, Cakmak expects the concept of seed fertil ization for improved seed nutrient content tobe developed by the agricul-tural industry and used by farm-ers, much like soil and foliar fer-tilization practices are used to-day.Haedt says while seed nutrientvalues are not currently avail-able on any production seed-bag labels, he expects thatcould change.

Sun. 12-3Bamboo came to Second Chance because his
previous guardians were moving and unable
to care for him. Bamboo is good with other
cats, dogs, and younger children so would
fit into any home nicely. He is litter boxtrained, likes his scratching post, and is very
friendly. If you think that you could give Bam-
boo a forever home please stop by and visit
him.
Maggie originally came
to Second Chance after
being found as a stray.
Maggie is a very
friendly girl, but does
take time to warm up to
new people. Maggie
would be best in a qui-
eter home, possibly
with mellower dogs and older children. If you think you
could give Maggie a forever home please stop by and visit
her.
Kira came to Second Chance because
her previous home was a bit too ac-
tive for her. Kira is overall friendly
but does take a bit of time to warm up,
and is very shy at first. Given some
time Kira likes to be held, but would
do best in a quieter home with older
children. If you think you could give Kira the perfect home
please stop by and visit him.
