WANT TO PAY LESS FOR QUALITY ORGANIC FOODS?f you prefer to eat organic food but can't always stomach therices, you may be interested in the Greenwich Food Buying Club.
We are community-minded people from a number of towns in therea who like eating well. Last spring we formed a new buyinglub to access non-perishable organic foods at near wholesalerices. Often they're one-third (or more) lower than what you'dave to pay in a supermarket or natural foods store. We orderhings like beans, grains, flours, nuts, nut butters, dried fruits andoffee. All the beans and grains come from Cayuga Pure Organicsnd are grown in New York. Our other supplier is Tierra Farm, aut processor/coffee roaster located only 60 miles to our south.
By working together we are able to buy directly from suppliers andill individual members orders. In most cases we purchase prod-cts in bulk in large bags or boxes and divide the product up ac-ording to people's requests. For some items though we buy casesf prepackaged product. With everyone contributing a few hoursf work, our buying club can pass on the big savings to the mem-ers. The most common job is weighing and bagging bulk foods at
central distribution site but there are also other tasks to be done.f you are interested, don't procrastinate. Our next order goes outt the end of January so the deadline for individual members tolace their orders is January 25.We only plan to order two or
hree times in 2014. Contact Tracy Frisch, [email protected] 518/692-8242 (no voice mail) with questions or to participate.

Some Things to Watch in 2014The 2012- 2013- 2014 Farm Bill The 2012 effort to pass a Farm Bill failed. Congress punted by granting aone-year extension. The 2013 effort was a struggle that will spill over into 2014. In particular, the fight over how farto cut SNAP benefits has put Democrats and Republicans at loggerheads. Based on the latest developments, we canexpect to see one some time in January. However, the specifics of the Farm Bill remain to be seen.Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. The new COOL born, raised, and slaughtered regulationsbecame effective on November 23, 2013. The battle to overturn these regulations, which are intended to protectAmerican swine and cattle producers from foreign competition, is waging on three fronts Capitol Hill, the federalcourts, and the WTO. The major livestock and meatpacking trade associations have challenged COOL in the federalcourts. The COOL supporters, including USDA, R-CALF and HSUS, prevailed on the first round of litigation. COOLopponents have appealed this decision. We can expect a decision sometime in the next few months on this matter.Canada and Mexico have also challenged the new mCOOL regulations at the WTO because COOL provides anincentive to discriminate against Mexican and Canadian livestock.Lawyers, Dust and Feathers the Alt case. One of the major cases decided this year was Alt v. EPA. InAlt, EPA alleged that a poultry farmer needed a NPDES permit on the basis that the farm was discharging pollutants
when stormwater washed dust, feathers and litter away from the barnyard area. Under this theory, nearly everyCAFO would be required to obtain a NPDES permit, a costly and onerous process. A federal judge held that the farmwas not required to obtain a NPDES permit because runoff from the barnyard area is an agricultural stormwaterdischarge that is exempt from permi tting requirements under the Clean Water Act. While this decision is a majorvictory for animal agriculture, its not quite time to uncork the champagne. EPA and the environmental groups thatintervened in the suit have decided to appeal this case. Arguments will take place later this year and we can expecta decision towards the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015.FSMA RolloutFDA is under the gun, or actually a court order, to write the rules that implement the Food SafetyModernization Act of 2011. FDA has to propose, accept public comment on, and finalize several major regulationspursuant to FSMA by June 30, 2015. While these rules will not be finalized until 2015, FDA is accepting publiccomments on their various proposals through the early months of 2014. We can expect that the new FSMA rules willhave a substantial impact on various segments of the ag sector.GMO Labeling. Whether food manufacturers should be required to label their products that include geneticallyengineered ingredients has been a hot button issue for the past few years. Supporters of mandatory labeling have hitseveral roadblocks at the federal level, so they have turned to state governments to require labeling. While high-profile ballot initiatives in California and Washington state have failed, supporters have made inroads with somemeasures in the northeastern states. For instance, Maine and Connecticut have labeling measures in place, but theyonly become effective if a critical mass of other states require GMO labeling. In order to avoid a patchwork ofvarious state labeling laws, we may see efforts ramp up in 2014 to pass some type of law regarding GMO labelingat the federal level, which would preempt state labeling laws. The Renewable Fuels Standard. The fight over the Renewable Fuels Standard will likely come to a headthis year. Much of the political support for the policy has dwindled in the face of opposition from a growing number
of strange bedfellows including environmentalists, livestock producers, and the oil industry. With petroleum consumptiondecreasing, the RFS mandate for renewable fuel use is hitting the blend wall much sooner than was anticipatedwhen the legislation was drafted in 2007. In response to the blend wall concerns, EPA has proposed lowering thetargets for corn ethanol use in 2014. Opponents of the RFS believe this is a step in the right direction, but not farenough. Meanwhile, supporters believe this is a step down a slippery slope. We can expect 2014 to bring uslegislative proposals to gut the corn ethanol portion of the RFS. We can also expect RFS supporters to sue EPA if itfinalizes its proposal to reduce the corn ethanol mandate.Trade Agreements. The Obama Administration is currently negotiating two major trade agreements that couldhave a major long-term effect on agricultural trade. The Trans-Pacific Partnership could significantly improve ouraccess to export markets in the Asia-Pacific region. However, agriculture is a major sticking point in these negotiations.Japan, in particular, wants to protect much of its agricultural industry from foreign competition. If this is allowed, thenother countries to the agreement will likely seek similar protect ions, making the TPA a much weaker deal for USagriculture. The second major trade agreement under negotiation is the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).This is a proposed trade agreement between the US and the European Union. While this trade agreement could bethe biggest trade deal in the world, agriculture could be a major sticking point in the negotiations. Conflicts over GMOacceptance in some of the EU membercountries, the use of hormones for growthpromotion, and animal welfare practices couldbe roadblocks for increasing trade with the EU.The TTIP negotiations have not progressed asfar as TPA, so we can expect developments in
TPA to influence the outcome in TTIP.Immigration Reform. The story for immigrationreform in 2014 will likely be a disappointment. While it seemed possible that some type ofbipartisan immigration reform deal could haveemerged in early 2013, that window has closed.

When it happens, this will be the obit:Please join us in remembering a greaticon of the entertainment community. ThePillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a
yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokesin the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greasedcoffin.Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, includingMrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, BettyCrocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with flours.Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly describedDoughboy as a man who never knew how much he waskneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his laterlife was filled with turnovers. He was considered a very smartcookie, but wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes.
Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty oldman and was considered a positive roll model for millions.Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough, three children:John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had onein the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

THE CREATION- On Sunday, January 26at 2pm, HubbardHall will present a Music from Salem Listening Club about Haydnsmasterwork The Creation, led by Peter Subers. Franz Josef Haydnvisited London twice during the 1790s. There he heard the orato-rios of Handel for the first time and returned to Vienna determinedto write his own work in the form. The libretto he used, based onthe Genesis story, the Psalms, and Miltons Paradise Lost, had beenoriginally refused by Handel, but Haydn used it to deliver a master-piece that ranks among his finest. Described by one critic as thevery embodiment of Enlightenment idealism, The Creation remainsan abiding testament not only to the grandeur of our world, but toits sacred origin as well. Join us as we explore, through recordingand discussion, this magnificent work. No musical knowledge isrequired, just a will ing set of ears. The January 26 Listening Clubwill take place at 2:00pm at Hubbard Halls Dance Studio in Cam-bridge, NY. Cost is $10. Pay at door, or pre-register at
