Sales of country recordings kept contracting during second-quarter 2015, though three acts who have created music that paints outside the lines — Zac Brown Band, Little Big Town and Sam Hunt — finished one-two among the top-selling al-bums and tracks for the quarter.

With consumers continuing to move toward streaming, a shift that has tamped down sales, the drop in purchases was less painful this year than it was dur-ing second-quarter 2014. Some 7.2 million country albums were bought between March 30 and June 28, according to Nielsen Music. That represents a slide of 9 percent from the same period a year ago. Country track down-loads totalled 37.5 million, a de-cline of nearly 15 percent.

While those numbers are steep, they’re less jarring than what the country business expe-rienced in 2014, when both Q2 country album and track sales nosedived 24 percent.

Zac Brown Band’s Jekyll + Hyde, which combines its coun-try core with out-of-genre influences – including collabora-tions with rocker Chris Cornell and pop singer Sara Bareilles, plus a Pink Floyd sample – topped the albums list after moving

415,000 copies during the three-month window, more than double the No. 2 title, Hunt’s Montevallo. Similarly, Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” which tested some conservative listeners with lyrics that were misinterpreted as referring to lesbianism, edged past the million mark to lead the 10 best-selling country

songs during the quarter. Hunt’s “Take Your Time,” which liber-ally employs pop and R&B influ-ences, was the only other track to best the 500,000 mark, racking up 651,000 Q2 downloads.

Other acts that have pushed sonic boundaries also fared well. Florida Georgia Line and Eric Church finished the quar-ter in the top 10 in both album and track sales, while Brant-ley Gilbert’s hard-rocking Just As I Am landed at No. 8 among country albums and A Thou-sand Horses’ Southern-rockin’ “Smoke” and Thomas Rhett’s

Motown-flecked “Crash and Burn” were both counted among the top 10 songs.

The industry overall was down 6 percent from last year in both album and track sales. Total album sales amounted to 55.5 mil-lion, a drop of 3.7 million from 2014. Track downloads totalled 253.7 million, a slip of 17.9 million purchases.

GOODMAN TO FILL SONY MUSIC POST After months of speculation about what Sony Music’s leadership would do about the empty top spot in its Nashville office, Randy Goodman, founder and former president of the defunct Lyric Street label, will take over the coun-try and Christian division, multiple sources say. The ink is not yet dry on the contract, but is expected to be within 24 hours.

Another industry veteran who had been rumored for the job, Ken Robold, is said to be coming in as Sony Nashville’s new GM. Although Sony didn’t im-mediately confirm the reports, an announcement about their respective ap-pointments is believed to be imminent.

The news comes as a relief to many on Music Row who have spent the last three-and-a-half months wondering how Sony Nashville could continue without someone in charge. As everyone in town seemed to know — and the Wikileaks Sony documents dump confirmed — Sony had wanted to hire man-ager Jason Owen for the top job last year, but he and Sony ultimately weren’t able to come to terms on a deal that would allow him to keep his management

company, Sandbox Entertainment.Goodman and Robold have a long history with major labels in Nashville.

Goodman had been seen as Joe Galante’s protege at RCA Nashville in the ’80s and ’90s, and a possible successor for the top job when he served as the label’s GM. But he left to found Lyric Street in 1997, heading that company — and finding considerable success with Rascal Flatts — before Disney shut-tered the imprint in 2010. Ironically, Disney closed the label and let Goodman go the same week that it was announced Galante would be handing the Sony Nashville baton to Gary Overton.

Robold brings a wealth of experience from labels that were in com-petition with RCA and Sony, having enjoyed a 22-year run at Polygram/ Universal that ended with him becoming that label group’s executive VP/GM in Nashville. More recently, Robold spent a year at the helm of Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Artists label. —Chris Willman

Cheers to Blake Shelton’s “Sangria” (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville), which holds the No. 1 spot for a second week on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 18). The content of the lyrics — drinking — has certainly been one of the major themes in country music since the very beginning. However, there have been long periods of time in recent history that they were missing in the country charts’ upper reaches.

For instance, in 2005, five songs that clearly reference drinking in their titles hit the Hot Country Songs top 10. After that, we hit a dry spell (pun in-tended). Just one song alluding to, or outright mentioning, drinking in its title made the top 10 in 2006 (Toby Keith’s “Get Drunk and Be Somebody”); two did in 2007; and then, even more sharply, none did in 2008 and 2009. All in all, only five country songs that reference drinking in their titles reached the top from 2006 to 2011. Drinking songs rebounded strongly in 2012, with six hitting the top 10. A wobble occurred in 2013, with only one such top 10, but six more tasted top 10 success in 2014. In 2015, we have already seen four.

Why the greater outpouring of top 10s referencing drink-ing since 2012? Admittedly, country has always cycled through various styles, from traditional to pop-sounding country, to songs with a rock edge or even hip-hop influences. It just makes sense that drinking songs also rotate in and out, depending on the varying temperature of the format’s sound. Further, when you consider the “bro-country” that has infiltrated country airwaves in recent years, drinking themes go down especially smooth.

Scott Mahalick, executive VP programming for Alpha Broadcasting, says that when drinking songs were largely missing from the charts, many 25- to 54-year-olds listen-ing to country radio wanted lyrics with mature themes. Now,

“younger people are listening to country more and more, and it makes sense that they want fun music,” he says. “A lot of

ager Jerry Weintraub died July 6, according to TMZ. He managed John Denver, promoted Elvis Pre-sley shows and produced such mov-ies as Nashville and Pure Country, the latter featuring George Strait.

GOOD WORKSWhen Garth Brooks brought his tour to Houston, he also brought a little new life to a Child Life Zone.

Brooks’ Teammates for Kids Foundation was instrumental in establishing the facility in 2001 at the Texas Children’s Hospital, and he was on hand on June 26 to introduce a renovation to the site, which has an expanded play space, including improved video gaming options.

More than 100 kids attended the unveiling of the upgrade. The Houston facility is just one of 11 Child Life Zones, which can also be found in such cit-ies as Denver, Dallas, Phoenix and Indianapolis.

TWEET OF THE WEEKThe venue and the city might change for Frankie Ballard (@FrankieBallard). The crust may not:

“God, please let the after show food be something other than pizza”

To follow BCU, go to Twitter.com/bbcountryupdate.

the current success of drinking songs was inspired by Toby Keith, who had songs like ‘Red Solo Cup’ and ‘Beers Ago,’ ” both top 10s on Hot Country Songs in 2012. “Because success chases success, we now have this current trend.”

Mahalick also thinks that the current round of drinking songs are eas-ily palatable to women, which traditionally may not have been the case. Today’s drinking songs tend to be party-driven, as opposed to telling sad tales of men drowning their sorrows alone at a bar. “When it was [Merle] Haggard or [George] Jones singing about alcohol back in the day, those were ‘guy’ songs,” says Mahalick. “But if it’s a young, cool artist like Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean or Eric Church on the topic, women love it.”

PANEL CHANGES: Effective with the Billboard Country Airplay chart dated Aug. 1 (released July 20), KIZN Boise, Idaho, will join the Country Airplay panel, replacing the market’s KQFC. Thus, the panel’s count will remain at 150 reporters.

Additionally, the following stations’ airplay will begin reporting to the Hot Country Songs chart — although not Country Airplay — also for the chart dated Aug. 1: WNNF Cincinnati; KJJY Des Moines, Iowa; WDRQ Detroit; and WSM-FM Nashville.

NEW RECURRENT RULE: As of the Country Indicator chart dated July 18 (see page 13), Billboard has amended the rules by which songs move to recurrent status. On Country In-dicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 will continue to move to recurrent status after 20 weeks. Now, however, a second qualifier will dictate recurrent status: After 10 weeks, songs will be moved if they post a third con-secutive week of decline in plays. Check out the full Charts Legend on page 13.

MUSIC NOTESCarrie Underwood may or may not be a victor when the final votes are tallied after three rounds of ballots this fall, but she was the winner in one aspect of the 2015 Country Music Association Awards: a solicitation for votes arrived via email shortly after 9 a.m. CT on July 6, roughly three hours before the CMA opened the nominating round in awards voting. Underwood’s email, which

suggested five categories in which she might be appropriate, was the first sent to potential voters through the CMA’s approved relation-ship with HiFi Fusion.

Tom Cruise set tongues wagging when he randomly appeared in the crowd dur-ing Nashville’s Fourth of July f ireworks display, headlined by Martina McBride. One other notable Independence Day con-cert moment came during the finale of Wil-lie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic in Austin: He was joined by Kris Kristofferson, Eric Church and Jamey Johnson on “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.”

Luke Bryan’s forthcoming album, Kill the Lights, has a higher quotient of self-written material than 2013’s Crash My Party. The standard version of Kill the Lights features six songs that he co-wrote — including two one-word titles, “Fast” and “Move” — while a Target-exclusive deluxe edition offers three more Bryan compositions. Crash My Party featured just two Bryan-penned titles. Kill the Lights also features Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild as a duet partner on “Home Alone Tonight.”

Wynonna Judd and Terri Clark are the latest additions to Charlie Daniels’ resurrected Volunteer Jam, set for Aug. 12 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. More than 25 acts had previously committed to the show, including a number that will perform on a free stage outside the arena. Already in the lineup: Craig Morgan, Lee Roy Parnell, Alabama, Trace Adkins and the Oak Ridge Boys.

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 150 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 104 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
