Counseling and Support Services
The mission of Counseling and Support Services is to assiststudents with their personal and academic concerns by
providingcounseling and support services.
Our services advance the academic mission of the university byfacilitating personal development, self-awareness, problem-
solvingand communication.
Services we provide:♦ Personal Counseling ♦ Career Assessment Testing ♦ Disability Resource ♦ Student Health Insurance♦ Housing Referral ♦ Health Referral Services
Counseling Services
We provide short-term therapy (up to 12 sessions per academic year) to all registered UM-D students. Our counseling is provided by licensed psychologists and there is no fee involved. Please note however that we do not prescribe medication but will give you a referral if needed.
Counseling begins with a assessment of your concerns and leads to a recommendation which may include:– Individual Counseling– Couples Counseling– Groups– Referrals
Counseling Issues & Confidentiality
Some issues expressed by students in Counseling include: ♦ Relationship Concerns ♦ Lack of Emotional Support ♦ Family Conflicts ♦ Role Conflicts and Strain ♦ Abuse ♦ Body Image Concerns
Students are assured that their use of counseling and personalinformation shared with our counselors in C&SS is totallyConfidential. No information is released without a client’s
writtenpermission and no information is entered into a student’s collegerecord.
Career Assessment Services
Career Assessment Testing is available for all students that areundecided or wanting to change their major/minor and/orcareer plans. Students receive feedback on interests, valuesand personality type related to types of work and careers.
We administer the following types of career test assessments:- Career Occupational Preference Survey (COPS)
- Myer’s Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) - Strong Interest Inventory
Each test cost $15 (or $35 for all three) for UM-D students. Cost is $40 (or $100 for all three) for all others.
Those interested should call or stop by C&SS to take a Career Assessment.
Disability Resource Services
Disability Resource Services (DRS) is responsible for facilitating UM-D’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other federal and state laws designed to remove barriers that my impede the progress of individuals with disabilities.
In order to be eligible for classroom accommodations, a student must register with DRS and provide the necessary disability/medical documentation. DRS will then determine “reasonable accommodations” for that individual student and will assist in providing those academic accommodations.
Some types of accommodations that can be provided are:◦ early registration ◦ tutorial referrals◦ extended time on exams ◦ scanning of textbooks◦ note-taker ◦ Interpreters for the deaf ◦ reader/scriber for exams
Students should register for DRS through Counseling & Support Services before the second week of the classes.
Housing Referral Services
Off-campus housing referral services is available to all students in
search of an apartment, house, room or roommate.
The following are a few of the services available:• Dearborn area rental listings/Landlord Properties• Apartment brochures/flyers• Roommate List• City maps• A guide to your rights & responsibilities as a tenant• Property Insurance Applications• Telephone access to contact local landlords & apartment
units• Computer access to attain driving directions/bus schedules
Interested individuals should contact Counseling & Support Services
or register online with housing services.
Health Referral Services
Student whom are not feeling well while they are oncampus can get a medical referral to see a doctor at
HenryFord Medical Center-Fairlane
Same day appointments are available, student are required
to get authorization from C&SS and pay a $5 co-pay.
Student Health Insurance is also available for students to
