CANOGA PARK: The Guadalupe Center had ALL their Christmas presents stolen by some evil grinches. The various local toy drives managed to replenish the gift supply so needy families would have gifts. However, according to Patrick Bobillo, Director of Communications at St. Mel Church in Woodland Hills which helped collect toys, what the center really needs are food items. “That is a daily need that never goes away,” he said. Canned goods, staples such as beans and rice, and non-perishable food is in desperate need.

The Guadalupe Center is located at 6933 Remmet Avenue, Canoga Park CA 91303. For more information on food or monetary donations call (213) 251-3549.

A very merry Christmas to all……And to all may Christmas be safe and enjoyable with your family as you observe and practice COVID-19 social restrictions to keep safe, healthy and happy as we enter 2021.

I am ending the year 2020 with a BIG and well deserved “Rave” for L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield from the 3rd Council District in the West San Fernando Valley.

It all began in 2005 when D.S. Ventures, LLC purchased vacant land along the north side of Mulholland Drive near Topanga Canyon Blvd to build a number of custom homes. Local residents immediately became involved and formed a group to block the housing development along the pristine land and open space. The neighbors organized, raised funds and retained an attorney to fight the development. The matter languished between the developer, homeowners, a private school, L.A. Department of Building and Safety, the local Neighborhood Council, the Mulholland Drive Review Board, the City Council Office along with various departments at City Hall and a number of other organizations for over 15 years. Fifteen years of meetings and negotiations and reports and all that goes along with any development built in the City of L.A.

At times it appeared that no solution was ever possible considering all the parties that were engaged with lawyers and city officials at various levels of government. During this time, local Councilman Bob Blumenfield continued to try and find a solution while never running out of patience or understanding for all involved. I am happy to finally “Rave” that after all the meetings and mounds of reports and lack of patience by many of the involved parties, Councilman Bob Blumenfield was successful in finally negotiating a solution that all parties agreed too. ALL APPEALS filed by the numerous community groups and individuals were dismissed after a variety of reasonable modifications were agreed to by the developer.

Rantz & Ravez from Dennis ZineThe matter ultimately was

heard at a recent city council meeting and the council voted unanimously to approve the development. Nineteen homes will be built for residential use and open space will be preserved along with a number of other enhancements for the benefit of the community. Congratulations to L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield for his patience, understanding and ability to bring parties with opposing views and concerns together for a successful conclusion after years of negotiations. I acknowledge Councilman Blumenfield and present him with a “Rave” for a job well done.

As 2020 comes to an end, we are all impacted by the effects of the coronavirus.

No matter what your position is or status of life is in America or throughout the world, we are all subject to the COVID-19 virus. It is critical that we follow the rules of the CDC and other medical professionals. I have friends

to represent you in Washington, DC? Something to think about before the next election.

The annual Homeless Count was scrapped this year. We all know that the homeless population is not improving. It is getting worse day by day. It’s obvious that politicians and various governmental organizations are not doing much to reduce the number of homeless living on the streets throughout Los Angeles. Channel 4 TV News has done a number of reports on the exploding homeless population in the various Los Angeles neighborhoods. Rats roaming many areas of L.A. are adding to the problem.

Voters passed tax increases to address the situation. While the money is there to address the matter, there is little to show for it.

Now word comes that the annual homeless count is not going to happen this year. The reason is very obvious. If there is no count, we won’t know how many homeless there are in Los Angeles. Interesting way to hide the truth and keep squandering the bond funds.

Governor Gavin Newsom:If you are fed up with party

boy Governor Newsom and his activities that are negatively impacting Los Angeles and all of California with his close this and that business and putting thousands of people out of work, please sign the Recall Petition. All you need to do is go to RecallGavin2020.com and copy the petition and circulate it with your friends. It is time to let the Governor know that we are not happy with his lack of leadership and hypocritical activities.

that have been stricken with the coronavirus. One nearly died and fortunately all have recovered. Those impacted by the virus that survive are very fortunate. Others less fortunate have died. May those that have died rest in peace...

It is nice when our national elected officials finally remember those of you who are struggling for survival.

Our elected officials in Washington, D.C. finally approved a $900 billion package on Sunday, December 20, to help Americans in distress. Many Americans are not able to pay their rent, mortgage, property taxes or purchase food or Christmas gifts for their loved ones.

While it will take some time for the funds to reach you, the elected members of Congress and the Senate have not missed a check or any of the other benefits they receive at our expense. Is it fair or proper for you to be treated like this by those that are elected

A BIG and well deserved “Rave” for L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield.

• With most parents working from home as well as now teaching their children, one local reader and mom shared her thoughts on changing some Christmas carols to better reflect 2020...

“I’m dreaming of a wine Christmas...”“Dashing through the snow, with a bottle of merlot!”“All I want from Christmas is schooool”

• Silent night isn’t a carol but a parents’ plea!

• Why didn’t Mary and Joseph make it to Bethlehem this year? All Virgin flights were cancelled...

BUSINESS

By Barbara Oberman-Lippe Our local small businesses

are the economic strength of our community and they are struggling to keep their doors open.

The West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce reminds us that this holiday season we have an opportunity to support our community and small business owners by shopping/cyber shopping locally.

Consumers are aware of the challenges faced by all businesses this year, and many want to do their part to help. Three in four consumers say they are going to try to shop from small and local businesses this holiday season, according to an Ad Taxi survey.

Here are some tips offered by local business owners belonging to the West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce on how you can help:

Shop your local stores online. Most retailers are offering their products on their website with online purchasing.

Share social media posts and online referrals.

Order take out. Purchase gift cards now to use later. Many local restaurants have been hit hard by COVID-19, and their very existence is being threatened.

Shop Small and Support Local:How to Help Local Businesses this Holiday Season

Start a Zoom dining club with your friends. Order from restaurants and Zoom to dine together safely.

Give your friends gift cards as holiday gifts and ask them to do the same for their friends.

Give the gift of knowledge.

Virtual classes (music/ dance/ fitness/ckooking) and other services. “Consider purchasing consulting services from local service providers” says Lee Levy, website designer and owner of Nex Graphics.

Refer a friend. “A wonderful way to support local business is to refer a friend to a business or restaurant” says Barbara Beaver-Cavaleri, the owner of Beaver’s Den Antiques located in the French Quarter, Woodland Hills.

Choose contactless pick-up in lieu of delivery services. To avoid third-party delivery charges and inevitable delays, pick up may be your best bet to make sure your gifts arrive on time for the holidays.

Diana Williams CEO of the Chamber, said, “In order for our business community to stay connected while observing safety measures, we quickly moved from face-to-face networking to virtual gatherings. Social media is filled with opportunities to refer local businesses. We have an interactive holiday/dining guide which accesses website and phones with your smart devices at your fingertips. The convenience of cyber shopping is right here locally. Shop local.”

Barbara Oberman is owner of Barbara C. Oberman Insurance Services, Inc. in Woodland Hills.

Order take out. Purchase gift cards now to use later or give them to friends and ask them to do the same for their friends.

By Laura Levinsky It had been a long, difficult

year where we had to learn, among other things, to stay at home, wash our hands and how to wear a mask. Those things were just the beginning.

So what else have our readers learned from 2020?

For many, it was about relocating to working from home:

“I never thought I’d like working from home. But I am really enjoying it.”

“I want to keep my kids safe but having them distance-learning from home makes it really hard to also work from home.”

From some, it was more about what the government was or was not doing to help the people:

“That we need to elect reasonable people to run our government. The Constitution was never designed to function for leaders with no respect for its citizens. We have now proven it.”

“That having a leader no matter the party he/she belongs to should at least be able to play nice, think of the whole, and have some level of social manners. Also I hope we are aware that we have given the president way too many loop holes and abilities to do things that in no way help anyone but himself. We need to

What Did You Learn From 2020?look at the ‘rule book’ again as this guy showed us a bunch of weak spots.”

For some, it was about the everyday things:

“Retirement is good. I value and miss the ability to dine out.”

“That valuing myself and my health was more important than going out at will and getting things.”

By an overwhelming number, it was about the people in their lives:

“Friends and family are what is important.”

“It taught me to cherish every moment and to always find the silver lining in every situation. When else will we ever all get to be home and spend so much time together as a family?”

“I definitely value quality in-person time with friends and family more. That will never be taken for granted again. The hugs we would we give each other so freely have taken on a new meaning.”

No matter what you learned, and what you take into 2021, may you have a happy and healthy in the New Year!

Netflix Gets Royal: “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” Top ChartsWhen it seems like you’ve

exhausted all there is to binge-watch while staying safely at home, Netflix delivers with not one, but two, highly anticipated and royally delightful series.

Currently on its fourth season, “The Crown” built quite a buzz with the impending introduction of its most anticipated member of the royal family, Diana (eerily perfected and played by Emma Corrin).

Given the audience is well aware of the tumultuous relationship between the “people’s princess” and “the firm,” this latest season delivers on the drama while exploring the various relationships between the royal family as well as the public.

While Diana and Charles do dominate a large portion of the season, “The Crown” also introduces another historic figure of the time, Prime Minister

Hot now on Netflix are “The Queen’s Gambit” at left, and “The Crown,” below.

M a r g a r e t T h a t c h e r , ( G i l l i a n A n d e r s o n ) and her rocky but respected relationship with the Queen.

This fourth season is also the last we will see of the current cast (Olivia Colman as the Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, etc.) as the next season will introduce a whole new cast to portray the family in later years, as has been custom every two seasons of the show.

Perhaps not as royal in the traditional sense, but still boasting a queen and king, is the new series “The Queen’s Gambit.”

Based on the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, this coming-of-age story reflects one orphan’s upbringing and her struggles with addiction as she strives to become the greatest chess player in the world.

While a series about a chess prodigy may not sound like the most entertaining at first glance,

this scripted series has quickly become the most-watched limited-series as of yet at Netflix. Chess sales have even grown 125% since its debut.

Orphaned as a young girl, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) discovers the world of chess when she befriends the maintenance man at the orphanage, who quickly realizes her talent for the game.

Queen’s Gambit refers to a specific chess move, one of many that Harmon comes to identify on her path as not only the greatest chess player, but a female player in a male-dominated game.

Both “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” are currently streaming all episodes on Netflix.

Too much royal tension for you?

Tune into “The Great British Baking Show” instead, where the only drama is the threat of a soggy bottom.

“Christmas Chronicles 2” Arrives in the St. Nick of TimeBy Theda Kleinhans Reichman

When it comes to wonderful Christmas movies you can’t beat Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” starring James Stewart as George Bailey. It was first released in 1947 and over time it has become a holiday tradition on TV. When I was young my family

and I watched this heart warming film religiously every year.

This year, due to the coronavirus, the holidays won’t be quite the same. Sadly we can’t venture out to do our Christmas shopping. Instead we have to shop online and let FedEx, UPS, and the post office make our very special deliveries. As Scrooge would say “Bah, humbug!” But wait--all is not lost--we can still watch holiday movies on TV with our family.

A real charmer for young and old alike is “A Christmas Story” starring Darren McGavin as the dad and Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, a little boy who desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas. Unfortunately his

mom is certain he would shoot his eye out and says no. But will Santa come through?

Check TV listings for Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” There are quite a few to choose from. In 2009 Jim Carrey played Scrooge and there’s even a Muppet movie version that’s a lot of fun.

Other holiday films to look for on TV include: “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Elf” with Will Ferrell and Bob Newhart, “Miracle on 34th Street” starring a very young Natalie Wood, “Bad Santa” with Billy Bob Thornton and National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.”

And this year on Netflix it’s “The Christmas Chronicles 2” directed by Chris Columbus. Kurt Russell stars as Santa and Goldie Hawn is Mrs. Claus.

The story begins as Kate (Darby Camp) goes to Cancun

Real life partners Goldi Hawn and Kurt Russell star as Mr. and Mrs. Clausin “Christmas Chronicles 2.”

with her mother, brother, her mom’s gentleman friend and his young son Jack (Jazir Bruno). Still grieving over her father’s death Kate is depressed by the thought that her mother might remarry and replace her dad.

Upset she heads off to town, followed by Jack. Enroute she is offered a ride by one of Santa’s elves, Belsnickel (Julian Dennison). Unnoticed, Jack

hops aboard behind Kate and in the blink of an eye the elf whisks them off to the North Pole. Luckily they are rescued by Santa in the nick of time.

Belsnikel, once Santa’s favorite, has decided to take over the North Pole. Will he be successful?

At one point in the story, Santa and Kate are chased back in time by Belsnikel. It’s now 1990,

not 2020 and they are stranded in Logan Airport. Everyone is angry because all flights have been cancelled. Even Santa’s reindeers can’t fly due to the negativity all around them. Then Kate bumps into a 13-year-old boy who will become a meaningful part of her life in the future.

“The Christmas Chronicles” from Netflix is rated PG and has a running time of 115 minutes.

By Paul DavisYou may think this is a devious

come-on from an unscrupulous insurance agent. But really my intent is to try to connect with people that are truly overpaying on their present plans without realizing it.

If you watch TV, you cannot avoid all the commercials for Medicare Advantage HMO plans that have zero monthly premium. Those plans are GREAT for people who have doctors that are contracted with those plans and comfortable with the HMO concept. Just FYI: Some of those plans include providers contracted with UCLA and Cedars. Many people find that surprising.

But this article is more for those people who want to have freedom of choice and do not mind paying a monthly premium for a Medicare Supplement (also known as a Medi-gap) plan.

If you are on a Plan J you are on the richest standardized Medicare supplement plan. It has not been sold since 2010. Plan J has an at home recovery benefit that does not exist on any current plans. But how much extra are you paying for that benefit and is it worth it?

2020 case studies: We recently had a client that was on a Plan J and his premiums were going up to $343/mo. He had been on that plan since 2009. When we shopped his plan this year, we found a Plan G coming in at $233/mo. $110 a month in savings equates to over $1300 a year. There are two benefit differences. Plan J has an at-home recovery benefit of $40/day for up to 40 days a year after discharge from a hospital and for every day you receive home health care. Sounds good, but I have never had a client make use of that benefit. Plan J has no deductibles. Plan G has a $203 deductible for Part B. After reviewing these plan and premium differences my client decided to change plans. He will be net ahead over $1000 a year.

I also had a client this year whose mother was on a very old Medicare supplement plan and it was costing over $1100 a month. This plan included nominal coverage for prescription drugs. We moved her to a new Plan G at $282/mo. and added a Part D plan. She must pay a penalty for not having “creditable Part D” coverage, but she is going to save about $7000 this year.

In both case studies above these people were able to afford their older premiums. But they are much happier and better off

Are You Wasting Some Money on Medicare Supplement Plans?

paying the lower rates. This is a great time to review

your coverage. Two major carriers currently have an open enrollment going on through February 28. You can change to any of the plans they are offering on a guaranteed basis. You can even upgrade your plan to a richer plan, all without any health history questions.

In California we have a “birthday rule” which guarantees the right of plan participants to change to any carrier’s similar or lesser Medicare supplement plan within 60 days of their birthday – with no health questions. Several other states have similar guarantees. But most states will not let you change plans unless you can prove you are still in good health. When clients tell me they are moving out of California we will strategically put them on plans that will be better for them in the long run in the new state they are moving to.

Plan F has been the richest plan since 2010. Plan F is still available to you if you became eligible for Medicare before 1/1/2020. But, if your 65th birthday was after that date the richest plan you can enroll in is Plan G. The ONLY difference between Plans F and G is that with G you are responsible for the Part B deductible. That deductible is $203 this year and will index up yearly.

Over the past few years, we have seen more companies emerge with Plan G offerings, and have also seen companies LOWER their rates on Plan G. Plan G is the competitive battleground for

carriers wanting to capture baby boomers. We are moving 10-15% of our clients each year for meaningful savings. We suggest to everyone that this is something they should be doing.

My office has a mechanism in place where we offer to re-shop all of our clients’ Part D prescription drug plans during the Annual Election Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7). We also re-shop all of our California clients’ Medicare supplement plans around their birthday every year. I know of no other agent or agency that is doing that.

NBA Superstar Paul George has sold his Hidden Hills home (complete with basketball court of course) to rapper French Montana.

George relocated to Pacific Palisades after being traded to the Clippers.

The Hidden Hills home is located on Ashley Ridge, also home to Kris Jenner, Montana’s ex Khloe Kardashian and the recently-incarcerated Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli.

The 16,000-square-foot house sits on 1.4 acres and has seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. The open floor plan features a series of A-frame areas. Floor to ceiling windows look out at the yard. There is a sitting area, bar area, casual dining space and a tree in the middle of the living room that reaches to the skylight. The home also has a formal dining room, game room den, movie theatre, wine cellar, wood-paneled study and dedicated gym with its own shower.

In addition to the basketball court, there is a kids’ playground, outdoor kitchen, large patio and pool.

George paid $7.4 million for the property in 2016. Montana purchased it for $8.4 million. He still owns a Tuscan-style home he purchased from Selena Gomez in 2016 that he had on the market for $5.6 million earlier this year that did not sell.

Executive Officer of HACLA. “We are so pleased to have a long-term stake in this community with our project in partnership with LA Family Housing and want to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without cooperative leadership at the State and local level, including City leaders like Councilmember Blumenfield.”

Project Roomkey has been a collaborative effort between multiple levels of government and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to swiftly provide local unhoused people with rooms, and supportive services, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As LAHSA has been closing down some hotels and finding other living assistance for the formerly homeless, Blumenfield fought to ensure that the two Roomkey sites in his district were formally purchased to create new, permanent housing opportunities for the West Valley’s homeless.

To celebrate the occasion, Blumenfield joined Stephanie Klasky Gamer, CEO of LA Family Housing, and a formerly homeless resident named Michael to hand over a ceremonial key and

drop off care packages comprised of reusable masks and personal hand sanitizers for each of the residents.

“We are incredibly grateful for the State and City’s efforts to end homelessness in people’s lives and greatly appreciate the opportunity to house more Angelenos through Project Homekey,” said Stephanie Klasky-Gamer. “We are in unprecedented times. With far too many Angelenos without work, facing dwindling unemployment benefits, and rents they can no longer afford, the already staggering rate of homelessness in our city will without question increase. Through Project Homekey, LA Family Housing is poised to meet the growing need for safe and stable interim and permanent supportive housing for our city’s most vulnerable residents.”

Blumenfield has been pushing to create many other West Valley homeless projects in his district that currently are in the works or expanding. In January 2021, the 80-bed Bridge Housing facility will open in Canoga Park and two Cabin Communities with 125 tiny homes are projected to open in March/April. He is also expanding

Safe Parking lots in the district and helping shepherd permanent supportive housing and other developments. Additionally, he secured $450,000 to grow the capacity for the drug addiction and mental health program for unhoused people that he started with Providence-Cedars Medical Center and Tarzana Treatment Center.
