Councillor’s Newsletter
KEEPING YOU INFORMED
Dear Residents,
Last Tuesday night, I met with some Stittsville
business owners for an excellent discussion at the
information session regarding the potential
Stittsville Business Improvement Area (BIA).
A BIA is important for the growing business
community in Stittsville to have access to the
resources which help them to thrive.
The session was well attended and some valuable
points were brought up by some of the
attendees.
I would like to thank the steering committee and
all potential members who joined to share their
insight, particularly Jim Walker for taking the lead
as Chair person.
I have attached a copy of the presentation made
at the meeting for your information available by
clicking here.
A number of businesses have volunteered to be
part of the Stittsville BIA Steering Committee to
engage the discussion in the community and seek
input. Now, it is very important that the Steering
Committee hears from Stittsville’s business
leaders to provide their input. All types of
feedback are important and welcomed from every
area of our diverse business community.
Businesses and commercial property owners are
requested to please complete an online survey
available at the below links:

Please note that the survey will close on August 4
I strongly support the establishment of a BIA in
Stittsville as I see there are many benefits that it
would provide and it would be a valuable
investment for businesses. All decisions of the BIA
would be made by the businesses and it is the
businesses that would elect a Board made up of
Stittsville businesses.
Another meeting is being planned and will
hopefully take place later this autumn. More
information on that will be shared in my newsletter
as it is received.
For more information or to provide additional
comments please contact myself and the Stittsville
BIA Steering Committee at [email protected].
If you have specific questions regarding the
assessment of your property and potential levy
please feel free to contact the City’s Economic

Kanata West Pump Station and Forcemain Project and Maple
Grove Closure - UPDATE I would like to provide a quick update regarding the ongoing construction work for the Kanata West
Pump Station and Forcemain Project Maple Grove Road between Terry Fox Road and Huntmar Road.
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the segment between Terry Fox and Silver Seven was
reopened last Friday.
However, due to weather, I have been advised that the sewer installation work and subsequent road
closure between Silver Seven and Huntmar scheduled for completion July 21st has been extended to
August 4th to allow more time for road reinstatement and paving.
I would like to thank affected residents for their patience at this time.
The Contractor will take every precaution necessary to minimize interruptions to residents but as
you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as delays
and traffic detours when travelling through the construction zone, noise, dust and vibration.
Signed detours for vehicles and bicyclists will be in place during the duration of the road closure.
Sidewalk Construction on Hazeldean
I would like to update
residents on the construction
of a sidewalk on Hazeldean to
take place later this year.
The overall project involves the
construction of a new 2.0m
wide asphalt sidewalk along
the north side of Hazeldean
Road east of Kittiwake Drive.
The new sidewalk will connect
to the existing sidewalk at the
intersection of Hazeldean Road
and Kittiwake Drive at the
western limit and the existing
Page 3 Keeping You Informed
sidewalk connection from Abaca Way at the eastern limit. The sidewalk will be located behind the
existing shoulder and streetlighting within the existing grass boulevard.
Schedule is unknown at this point, but the sidewalk is anticipated to be constructed before the end
of 2017. It is noted that while the design is being completed by the City, construction will be
undertaken by the Developer of Bulat Court.
For the construction of sidewalk, traffic should not be impacted and therefore no long duration lane
closures will be required. Pedestrian access and construction site control will be per the City’s latest
requirements.
I will be certain to provide updates in my weekly newsletter on this project as they become available.
Fernbank Rd Culvert Installation
I would like to advise residents that Fernbank Road will be closed from Shea to Robert Grant
between Tuesday, August 8th and Tuesday, August 22nd.
The contractor, Taggart Construction, will be installing a box culvert across the roadway for future
storm water management.
Notification signs will be posted in advance of the closure with additional signs posted during the
affected period. Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

By-law Q2 Report
I would like to take a moment to supply residents with a
breakdown of the quarterly by-law regulatory service request
report.
Every three months, by-law services releases a ward-by-ward
summary of general request types. These requests range from a
multitude of services offered by calling or emailing 3-1-1
By-law & Regulatory Services experienced an overall decrease of -3.5% in total call volume compared
to Q2 of 2016.
The full report can be found here and Stittsville’s individual report can be found here.
As you can observe, parking was the most-requested by-law item within our ward (268) however it
only comprised 1.5% of the total city’s parking requests (consistent with last year’s statistics at Q2).
Alternatively, Stittsville’s greatest reflection against the city as a whole were requests regarding care
of streets (3.8%) and signs (3.8%) which saw 51 and 23 requests respectively for the first half of the
year. At this time last year, Parks were among the highest representation of requests in Stittsville at
5.2% (this year down to 2.8%).
Learning from these trends helps the City of Ottawa to ensure that proper investments are made
into resources for the future.
I encourage residents to take a moment and see what trends they can spot. Of course, as your City
Councillor, I am always keen to hear your well thought-out ideas regarding how to improve our
community. You can do so by emailing me at [email protected].

Committee of Adjustment Stittsville Items
The Committee of Adjustment for the City of Ottawa is holding a Public Hearing on August 2nd and
residents’ input is requested.
Of the items for discussion, one application falls within the Stittsville Ward for 6111 Hazeldean/603
Geranium to consider an Application for Consent to subdivide the property into two separate parcels
of land in order to create one new lot for future commercial mixed-use development.
I highly encourage residents to share their thoughts on this item so that they may be discussed in
full at the Public Hearing. Comments are required by July 26th. Please email comments to
For more details of the applications scheduled for this Hearing, please visit the City’s e-Agenda
website at http://app05.ottawa.ca/sirepub/agendaminutes/index_en.aspx.
Public Health Expert Panel Report
In January of this year, the Provincial Ministry of Health partnered
with public health units together to create an Expert Panel on
public health which would generate a report to guide the future of
public healthcare plans in Ontario.
This report makes recommendations on structural, organizational
and governance changes for Ontario’s public health sector that, if
implemented, would constitute a significant departure from status
quo. As part of their recommendation, the Expert Panel was asked to consider:
1. The optimal organizational structure for public health in Ontario to:
ensure accountability, transparency and quality of population and public health
programs and services
improve capacity and equity in public health units across Ontario
support integration with the broader health system and the Local Health Integration
Networks (LHINs) – the organizations responsible for planning health services
leverage public health’s expertise and leadership in population health-based planning,
decision-making and resource allocation, as well as in addressing health equity and
the social determinants of health.
Page 6
Keeping You Informed
2. How best to govern and staff the optimal organizational structure.
Yesterday, the report was made available in full and is available by clicking here.
I believe this is a great stride forward toward a public health sector that operates consistently
between municipality and province. Moreover, an integrated health system will make the programs
offered by public health will be more visible in the public domain, thereby improving upon resources
that are readily available.
I highly encourage all residents to review the report as there are quite a few perspectives explained
in the way of optimizing public health for everyday life.
La Machine creatures and crowds will take over downtown
streets
https://vimeo.com/218662694
La Machine, an Ottawa 2017 Signature Event, will occur in downtown Ottawa, the ByWard Market and
Downtown Rideau, from July 27 to 30. This event will bring giant mechanical creatures, thousands of
visitors and five days of intermittent traffic impacts – including one for setup on Wednesday, July 26
– to Ottawa’s downtown.
I would like to take a moment to share some of the logistics for this event so that residents may
plan their commutes in advance and make the most of this iconic and memorable event!
Page 7 Keeping You Informed
During this event, businesses will remain open, but there will be numerous traffic impacts in order
to create safe pedestrian zones for residents and visitors to enjoy the four-day street performance.
Anyone travelling downtown to enjoy La Machine is strongly encouraged to review scheduled traffic
impacts listed on ottawa.ca in advance.
The list of affected roads and the timings of traffic impacts are subject to change. Follow the City
through Facebook and Twitter for real-time updates.
Commuting downtown
Workers are encouraged to take transit, bike, walk or carpool to reduce delays.
City parking lots will be available but are expected to fill-up quickly. Parking will be available for $2
at City Hall over the weekend. Please be patient as significant delays are expected on all downtown,
ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau streets during performances.
Transit
OC Transpo is your best choice for getting downtown, but you should leave home early and expect
delays. OC Transpo, Traffic Services and the Ottawa Police Service will work together to mitigate
delays and lessen the impact of rolling road closures on transit.
OC Transpo Routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19 and all routes that operate on the Transitway
will experience short intermittent disruptions to service or be on detour on many streets downtown
while La Machine creatures pass.
Keep up to date by checking OC Transpo’s live updates page or follow @OCTranspoLive on Twitter.
Customers can also sign-up to receive email or text alerts by creating a subscription for selected
routes at octranspo.com.
On Saturdays or Sundays, customers can purchase a Family DayPass for $10.25, which allows a
family of up to six people, with a maximum of two aged 13 or older, to ride on OC Transpo the
entire day.
Traffic impacts
There will be significant and rolling traffic impacts for motorists, and intermittent disruptions for
cyclists, throughout the weekend. The full list of closures is available on ottawa.ca. Pedestrian-only
traffic will be permitted in designated areas. Wayfinding signage and members of the Ottawa Police
Service will help direct traffic. Expect delays.

Kontinuum
https://vimeo.com/221635570
Another great Ottawa2017 signature event to check out this summer provides a first-hand look at
the brand new Light Rail Transit (LRT) Tunnel.
Kontinuum is an immersive multimedia production, created by Ottawa 2017 and Moment Factory,
and it unfolds in the future Lyon Light Rail Transit (LRT) station. Visitors descend deep underground
into an anomaly in the fabric of reality where invisible frequencies take on physical dimension.
Elevate your senses and awaken your imagination in this journey where two realms collide.
The story premise for Kontinuum is that a crevice in the fabric of reality was discovered during
excavation of the LRT tunnel. Since this discovery, inexplicable electromagnetic waves have been
appearing in and around the tunnel, captivating the imagination of passersby. It is an immersive,
dynamic and moving experience, using the full 500-metre length of the station, where participants
will be exposed to the hidden frequencies of the material world.
Using technology in creative ways to highlight the architecture in the Confederation Line’s Lyon
Station, this is a fantastic opportunity to get a first look at Ottawa’s new Confederation Line tunnel
prior to its launch in 2018.
Operating Hours run until September 14th from 10 am to 10 pm daily and free tickets are available

Whether you are new to Ottawa or a familiar face who hasn’t had the opportunity to watch yet, one
exciting tradition in the City is the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
The Changing of the Guard is a daily ceremony over the summer which includes a regimental band
and pipers as they gather on Parliament Hill for drills. This event begins at 10:00 AM every day until
August 25.

Splash pads, Beaches, and Pools are a Great Way to Beat the
Heat this Summer
As the warm weather gains momentum, I wanted to remind residents of just some of the fun ways to
keep cool this summer in Stittsville.
Splash Pads are active until September 11th and run from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Splash Pads are
available in Stittsville at Pioneer Plains Park, Haliburton Park, Bandmaster Park, Upcountry Park and
soon Deer Run Park (construction scheduled to finish with facilities available for public use by July
28th. Please note that there was an inconsistency in last week’s newsletter saying the pad would be
open August 28th. My apologies for any confusion).
For a list of all splash pad locations across the City, please visit Ottawa.ca. To report a
malfunctioning splash pad, please call 3-1-1 or email [email protected].
Beaches are also open with supervision from 12:00-7:00 PM every day until August 27th at Mooney’s
Bay, Britannia, Westboro, and Petrie Island (weather permitting). Be sure to check in with Ottawa
Public Health for the most recent water quality results.

Lock Your Vehicles!
I would like to take a moment to remind residents to take precautions and ensure that any vehicles
parked in driveways or the side of the road should always remain locked when not in use.
Ottawa Police Services (OPS) advise residents to never leave personal identification, spare keys,
credit cards, or valuables in your vehicle and any other items of value that remain should be hidden
from view including loose change, shopping bags, GPS systems and/or music-playing devices.
One useful tip to prevent vehicular break-ins is to run a mental checklist every time you leave your
vehicle with questions like:
Are the windows raised all the way with the doors locked?
Am I parked in a well-lit area with regular foot traffic to deter potential break-ins?
If parked in the driveway, have I backed in to make sure anyone tampering with the vehicle is
more likely to be seen?
Other alternatives for protecting your belongings could be engraving
your vehicle registration number on your stereo system, wheel rims,
tools, etc. You might also consider installing an anti-theft device or
using your garage more regularly.
If you or someone you know has recently had their vehicle broken
into, I understand it can be a devastating experience. However, as
urgently as possible, it is important to report the theft to the Ottawa
police online at Ottawapolice.ca. Upon reporting, OPS requests a
complete description of your vehicle including:
Year
Make
Model
Colour
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Plate number
Ignition key number
Insurance company
Policy number
Telephone
Any outstanding features, dents, scratches
Contents of the vehicle (e.g., stereo system)
Page 15 Keeping You Informed
I encourage residents to help their street by organizing a neighbourhood watch by
contacting our Community Police Liaison, Kevin Williams
at [email protected], and coordinator for neighbourhood watches, Victor
McNabney at [email protected].
I hope that some residents find these tips helpful. Of course, never hesitate to
contact your Ottawa Police Services whenever you suspect strange activity in your
neighbourhood. Be prepared, and be safe.
Proposed Changes to 3 Hour Parking Bylaw on Unsigned
Roads
I would like to request residents to participate in a very
important online public consultation.
As some of you may know, the City of Ottawa Bylaws
indicate a maximum 3-hour parking limit on any
unsigned street between 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM. This bylaw
is enforced on a complaint basis allowing residents the
ability to report parked vehicles which remain parked
on the street for long durations of time.
Traffic Services is currently in the process of updating/rewriting the Traffic and Parking By-law and
would like your input on this item.
The proposed change would allow vehicles to park for 6 consecutive hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on
weekends and statutory holidays. Please note that the 3 hour parking limit on Monday-Friday would
remain in effect should the changes move forward. Please click the following link to have your say
and for more information: https://s-ca.chkmkt.com/?e=89947&h=166F2DC43855E35&l=en
A phone number, 613-842-3622 has been set-up as an alternative to providing online feedback.
The metrics pulled from the survey will be included in the final report to be tabled at the
Transportation Committee on September 6, 2017. Please provide your input before August 22nd.
I hope that all residents take a moment to share their thoughts on this item as street parking is
something that affects all residents in Stittsville.
