Tatt'll Do Nicely!We were lucky enough to go along to the preview evening ofthe ‘British Tattoo Art Revealed’ exhibition which is currentlyrunning at Rozelle House Galleries in Ayr. Featuring around400 historical artefacts, original artworks and photographs,this major exhibition is a must-see! Visitors can view the journeyfrom traditional tribal ink all the way through to 21st centurytattoos.

The ‘100 Hands Project’, a collaboration of artwork fromtattooists across the UK, and the life-size statue of ‘The GreatOmi’, the famous tattooed circus performer, have beenparticularly popular!

Derryth Ridge, Co-curator of the National Maritime Museum inCornwall said, “If you like tattoos, you’ll love it, if you like socialhistory, it’s for you… it’s beautiful and spellbinding.” So if you’relooking for inspiration for your next inking, or just looking fora great day out, get yourself down to Rozelle House - theexhibition is open until Sunday 3rd March.

Love is in the Ayr!

We met with Senior Registrar, Denise McKay, who was kind enoughto show us around their offices which are located on Ayr HighStreet in the Town Hall Building. "We have 10 full time employeesand 11 casual Ceremony Officers." says Denise, "Our registrarswon't just marry you, we provide a range of services." The skilledteam play a significant role in some of the most importantmoments in people's lives, as they register births, deaths andmarriages across South Ayrshire.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we decided to go along tomeet our Celebrants team at Ayr Registration Office to find outmore about the team and what they do.

They also conduct marriage ceremonies, extract birth certificates,process change of name paperwork and conduct citizenshipceremonies. They even offer a family tree service by appointmentwhere you can research your family history!

Senior Assistant, Evelyn Walker, said, “Every day is different. I reallyenjoy getting to be part of special moments between two people,and hearing about different wedding plans. There is never a dullmoment.” The Town Hall has two bright and airy ceremony rooms(pictured left). However, love is definitely all around as our teamwill marry you almost anywhere - with a recent venue being thecastle on Ailsa Craig, which stands almost 300 feet above sea level!Assistant Registrar, Caroline Agnew, who conducted the ceremonyon the granite jewel said, “Usually couples are suited and booted –this time they were just booted!”

Torn From Home

Coordinated by History teacher, Kevin Riley, pupils from Carrick andGirvan Academies had the privilege of meeting Holocaust survivorJoanna Millan (born Bela Rosenthal). Joanna spent most of her infancyin the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp before she was liberated atthe age of 3. Her parents did not survive the Holocaust and she wassent to Britain as an orphan and later adopted by a British family.Joanna gave S5 History pupils

Schools across South Ayrshire organised various activities tocommemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

from both Carrick and GirvanAcademies, an incrediblypowerful insight into herharrowing experiences. Shebegan her story with theNuremberg Laws, life as a Jewin Berlin, and later inTheresienstadt, before endingwith her life in Britain andadjusting to her new identity.

The session concluded with pupils taking the opportunity to askJoanna questions about her experience.

Joanna's talk touched uponmany current societal issues,focusing on how we must learnfrom the past, treasure ourdifferences and why we shouldspeak out against wrongdoings.

Senior pupils at Kyle Academydelivered an outstandingworkshop for S2 pupils whoare currently learning aboutthe Holocaust. Overseen byHistory teacher, EmmaAndersson, S5-S6 Historypupils organised a lesson plan

the theme of 'Torn from Home'. In addition to learning about theHolocaust, the workshop provided an opportunity for pupils to reflectupon these issues, and how they are resurfacing 75 years later throughhate crimes and the Syrian refugee crisis. All pupils conductedthemselves in a respectful, mature manner and are truly a credit to allof us in South Ayrshire.

The JourneyHard hitting educational film, 'The Journey', has been shownto many of our school pupils. The short film, created by ourCommunity Safety Team, follows Johnny who finds his lifespiraling out of control after making one bad decision. Thisfilm shows what can happen when we fall foul of the law.

The film has been rolled out across secondary schools in SouthAyrshire and Police Scotland are now looking to use theresource in schools in both North and East Ayrshire andpotentially Greater Glasgow. For more information on 'TheJourney' contact [email protected]

Ayrshire College's Mark Vance said, "I work with young people,who for various reasons, face barriers to learning and indeedday to day life and the subject matter of the film is so relevantto the situations they could find themselves in."

Our FloatFit classes are a great way to get fit while you'rehaving fun in the water. The Citadel now offers threedifferent types of these stimulating classes, with a mixtureof HIIT and Yoga inspired moves. The Citadel's Lauren Cahirsaid, "There are so many benefits to FloatFit: increasedflexibility, enhanced posture, coordination, balance,muscular strength and mental wellbeing." And the Winner is...The draw for our 12 month Citadel Gym MembershipCompetition took place on Thursday 31 January and we'redelighted to announce the lucky winner is Clare Connor!

John said, "This is the break I've needed to give myself a pushto get fit again." We'll catch up with John later in the year tofind out how he's enjoying his gym membership.

Clare, who is already a member at the Citadel, decided to giftthe membership to her husband John. She told us, "I wassurprised to win, but I think my husband was even moresurprised when I told him I was giving it to him."

Family Fun at Whitletts Activity Centre Whitletts Activity Centre were delighted to welcome the 10:10 Trust,who now run weekly activity sessions from the facility. The Trust,whose work is supported by local churches, provides support andactivities for children, young people and families in North Ayr. Nowrunning are: ‘HisTots’ - a group for ‘wee ones and their grown-ups’and ‘HisKids’ for children in pre-school through to P5. Both groupsboast a range of fun activities run by staff and volunteers from theTrust and include games, arts and crafts, free play, songs and storiesfrom the bible.

Looking for other exciting activities for children? Our pre-school FunHouse classes which are held at the Citadel, Ayr on Mondays andTuesdays,10am to 12pm and Fridays, 12noon -2pm. Classes are only£1 per child and everyone is welcome! To find out more call 01292269793 or email [email protected] .

Hitting the Slopes with Active Schools

50 pupils from TroonPrimary Schools headed toNewmilns Ski Slope withour Active Schools Team totake part in the 2018/19 SkiProgramme. The five week programmesaw youngsters enjoy skilessons and take part intubing. Barassie PS pupilMatthew said, "The part Ienjoy most is tubing withmy friends. I would like totry skiing again!"

Tumbling - That's How Evie Rolls!There was cause for celebration when inspirational EvieMacLeod picked up an achievement award for gymnastics.9 year old Evie rocks, tumbles and rolls her way to successand doesn’t let anything get in the way of achieving her goals.The determined youngster, who was born without her full left

hand has beenattending gymnasticswith our SportsDevelopment Programmefor the last four years.In that time, Evie hascome on leaps andbounds, receivingrecognition for hereffort, progress andpositive attitude.

As if that wasn’tenough, active Eviealso practises Karate,Bujinkai and swims.With all that it soundsas if she’s a force to bereckoned with!

Food with FionaWelcome to our new feature ‘Food withFiona’. Each month Catering Supervisor andOutstanding People Awards winner, FionaCant, will bring you tasty recipes which youcan try out for yourself. This month -pancakes! Who doesn’t enjoy this traditional

1) Sieve the flour, sugar andbicarbonate of soda into a large bowl2) In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs,then add to the flour mixture3) Slowly add some splashes of milk,while mixing. Continue until the batteris smooth and soft. You can add moremilk until you reach the desiredtexture. Leave to sit for a few minutes4) Melt the butter on a spoon & drizzleacross a non-stick frying or griddle pan- you want a thin layer5) Once the pan is hot enough, add aspoonful of batter to create smallcircles (although you can make theseas big as you like!)6) The top of the pancake should soonstart to bubble. Once this happens, usea spatula to flip the pancake over. Bothsides should be golden brown7) Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you haveused all of the pancake mixture8) Leave to cool for a few minutesand serve with your choice oftopping.

Macmillan Move MoreWe teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support and North andEast Ayrshire Councils to launch the Macmillan Move Moreprogramme. Traditionally, cancer patients have been told torest and put their feet up, however, that's now not the caseaccording to Macmillan Cancer Support research. Being activeduring and after treatment can help to: maintain physicalfunction, improve the feeling of mental wellbeing and minimisethe side effects of treatment.

Macmillan Strategic Partnership Manager, Joanne Andersonsaid, "Research shows that being active during and aftertreatment can not only help with the side effects, but also reducethe loneliness and isolation many people feel."Designed specifically for people affected by cancer, theprogramme includes: walking groups, a gentle movement class,circuits-based activity classes and gardening. Life on Mars?Girvan Academy pupil Daniel Conlan, was over the moon whenhe heard he'd secured a place at NASA’s United Space Schoolin Houston, Texas this summer. The international programmebrings 50 students from 25 countries together to design a‘Manned Mission to Mars’. Physics fanatic Daniel told us, “Icouldn’t stop smiling when I heard I’d got a place! It’s like adream come true.”Daniel, who will make the venture in July, will also get a tasteof what it’s like to live in the states as he’ll be staying with ahost family for the duration of his two week trip. Daniel is nowbusy raising funds to put towards his travel costs. We'll catchup with Daniel on his return from NASA. Early Years Workshops at Carrick Academy Carrick Academy recently hosted Early Learning and Childcareworkshops for pupils who are interested in a career in this area.Girvan Academy and Marr College pupils joined the workshop alongwith 3 of our Early Learning and Childcare Modern Apprentices.

Eilidh Summers (pictured right), gave usher take on the day, “I went along to theworkshop and found out more about earlyeducation and childcare as I wasn’t surethat it was what I wanted to do. I found outabout the work and which routes I couldchoose to take, one being anapprenticeship. I applied for a couple thatwere advertised and I was successful,which I was over the moon about.” Eilidhhas since went on to gain an Early Learningand Childcare Apprenticeship at MaidensEarly Years Centre.

LGBT History MonthFebruary is LGBT History Month! It's an opportunity to celebrateLGBT culture, reflect on LGBT history and look to the future ofactivism. LGBT History Month is for everyone: community groups,organisations, individuals, activists, service providers, LGBT andnon-LGBT people alike. Throughout February, a range of SouthAyrshire youth groups and schools will be delivering awarenessraising sessions for LGBT History Month – find out more here.

SAY LGBT is a youth group opento Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI)young people and their friends,who are aged 13-25 years old. It’srun in partnership with SouthAyrshire Community Learningand Development and LGBT YouthScotland. The Book and BunWe heard great things about the Book and Bun in NewmarketStreet in Ayr, so we decided to get ourselves along there to seewhat all the fuss was about. We received a warm welcome fromVASA's Angela McWhinney who runs the cafe and social enterprise.Filled with friendly staff, customers, volunteers and readingmaterials galore, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. Custo-mers can enjoy an abundance of baked goods (we recommend

Led byvolunteer Lesley Adams, the group produced some prettyimpressive pieces. “VASA were looking for volunteers and I hadthe experience to lead the group. We look at new techniques andwork on current skills. It really helps to build people's confidenceand I get a lot of enjoyment out of it too!"

For a small fee per class, over 60s can take part in a range ofactivities, including: line dancing, Yoga, Tai Chi and writing classes.Mary Hodgson has been coming along to these 'Strictly SeniorsSocial’ groups for 3 years, “I go to Tai Chi and Stretching, it’s a greatatmosphere. You can be your own person.” Next up, people beganto file in enthusiastically for Ayrways Choir, a singing group forthose with respiratory conditions. Other services available arenail cutting and ‘Knit and Natter’, the venue can even be rentedout with catering options available.

What really strikes us is the positive vibe from everyone we met –people want to be there! So whether you’d like to volunteer, takepart in social activities or are simply looking for a cuppa and ablether, there really is something for everyone at the Book andBun. Young Musicians Hit the High Notes!

Young musicians from schools across South Ayrshire arecelebrating after scooping top awards at a National Concert BandFestival event held in Glengarnock. The Junior and Senior ConcertBands each received a Gold Award with event organisers praisingthe quality of their sound, attention to detail and response to theirconductor. The Big Band received a Platinum Award whichrecognises outstanding musical performances. All three bands have now qualified for the national UK ConcertBand finals which are being held in Manchester in April. Plans areunderway to ensure that all 120 young musicians and staff cantravel to Manchester to take part in this fantastic music makingopportunity. South Ayrshire Schools’ Junior and Senior Concert Bands and BigBand are led by the Instrumental Music Service. They have beenrehearsing weekly on Tuesday evenings since September andcontinue to practice together in preparation for their concert inAyr Town Hall on 26th March.
