Scott Foresman – Addison Wesley MATH

Scott Foresman – Addison Wesley MATH was carefully developed to reflect the specific needs of students and teachers at every grade level, while maintaining an overall primary goal: to have math make sense form every perspective. The program’s content, based on the NCTM Standards, places a strong emphasis on helping children develop number sense. The program is designed to support four major goals: • Meaningful learning over time: The program focuses on building number sense through

conceptual development of number, operations, and computation including estimation and mental math. Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley MATH builds understanding through connections to prior knowledge, math strands, other subjects and the real world. It provides practice for maximum results and offers assessment in a variety of ways. Besides carefully placed reviews at the end of each Section, an important Test Prep strand runs throughout the program. Sample standardized test items are included in every Review and Test Prep section of the lesson practice pages at Grades 3-6. Students need to prepare for algebra and Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley MATH built pre-algebra concepts into lessons and review. Rich and varied practice is built into daily lessons insuring mastery of skills and strategies.

• Sensitivity to ages and stages of learning: Each stage of development is addressed through

engaging themes, interesting data, and appealing mascots. Students are motivated and challenged through various types of lessons: Explore Lessons, Learn Lessons, and Problem Solving Lessons.

• Priority on problem solving: The reading expertise of Scott Foresman and the math

expertise of Addison Wesley provided students with the tools to become independent problem solvers. By integrating problem solving into daily instruction, students gain confidence and achieve success.

• Customized instructional support: the program meets teachers’ needs with the Teachers’

Edition, and reaches all learners with ancillaries for practice and problem solving, hands-on math, language support, assessment and teacher support. Technology is integrated into the program with MathSURF, an Internet site for students, teachers and parents. Ancillaries specific to Grades K-4 include a Calendar Time Kit and Teacher’s Overhead Manipulative Kit. In grades K-2, language support is available through Reading Strategies for Math Flipcharts and Blackline Masters, Math Songs and Rhymes Audiocassettes and Song Book. The MATHmatazz Kit created by the Children’s Television Workshop offers a video, story, puppet skits or game for each chapter.
