CATS Members arriving at our October meeting were greeted by a mouthwatering array of lovingly

restored and refurbished Heathkit equipment, plus a few specially-created Heathkit look-alikes. The owner of this superb arrangement of kit was Bob Burns G3OOU from the Crystal Palace club who had agreed to give a talk on the subject of Heathkit refurbishment and rebuild to CATS - a passion he had first succumbed to many years ago.

After describing all the equipment he had brought with him, Bob outlined the various steps of his refurbishment process, beginning with his golden rule, “never just switch on!” This included checking all electrolytic capacitors, discharging high voltage lines, visual checking, trying all controls, and checking for: anything loose, broken or cracked; swollen electrolytics; perished drive belts, leaking chemicals etc. Common problems include

• Dirt, smoke/nicotine stains • Deformed electrolytics

• Aged carbon resistors • Corroded rotary switches

• Loose valve sockets, particularly on PCBs • Frozen controls

• Missing or broken decorative parts Amongst others, solutions include: • Washing the case

• Reforming electrolytic capacitors

• Cleaning and degreasing chassis After carrying out all relevant steps of the above process, Bob recommends that next, the set should be run for 30 minutes on heaters only. Materials used by Bob for rebuilds include: • 16 swg sheet (bendable and non-bendable)

• 6 mm square bar • 12 mm angle

• 12 mm and 18 mm U channel • Tin plate steel Where a repaint is needed, Bob recommends careful preparation followed by using solvent-based model paint with 10% Araldite (not the quick setting variety) to produce an extremely durable finish. Some of the work that Bob described, such as adding WARC bands and or Top Band to Heathkit designs intended for operation on 80m to 10 m only (five bands), required much painstaking work to install extra components and modify wavechange switches to provide more ways (switched positions.) He also described how, when the front panel space was inadequate, he had converted controls to dual concentric use. A selection of photos follows:

The CATS Committee sent a floral tribute on members’ behalf to Ken’s funeral. At the funeral it was recounted how Ken had worked on RADAR installations in Burma. While being parachuted in, he was shot at by American forces. He “was very relieved,” his widow Mary writes, “to make regular contact by radio with a chap in Thornton Heath who was able to visit his parents in Norbury and let them know that he was safe and well. Letters took forever and Burma was a very dangerous place to be. Ken was upset that the contribution made by the forces in Burma was never publically recognized – perhaps they will be one day.”

CCoouullssddoonn BBrroowwnniieess On 9th October CATS members Andy G0KZT, Andy G8JAC, Glenn G4FVL and Steve G3WZK were involved in helping 14 Brownies gain their Communicator badges. The Brownies in question were the eleventh Coulsdon group and one of the members, Melissa, just happened to be the daughter of Andy G0KZT!

On this occasion the session began with Andy G8JAC giving a brief introduction to the principles of communication and the NATO phonetic alphabet. Then the Brownies were divided into three groups to undertake three different activities in sequence. These three activities were: • With support from Andy G0KZT and his

TS2000, send a supervised message on two metres to Glenn G4FVL (who was at home nearby throughout the event) using the callsign GX1FUR/P.

• With Andy G8JAC and his ex-military back pack radio listen to activity on the amateur 40 metre band, or use 446 MHz fun radios around the guide hut.

• With Steve G3WZK, send and receive

simple messages using Morse code and a practice oscillator.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and to cap it all, each of the four CATS members involved received a box of chocolates for their efforts. Thank you Brown Owl! A selection of photos follows.

Ken Rosier G3DJK (1925 – 2012)

It is with regret that CATS Whispers announces the death of CATS member

CCoonntteesstt UUppddaattee BByy AAnnddyy GG00KKZZTT Remainder of 2012 With just November and December to go, here is a brief overview of the remaining contests for the year. On bands above 30MHz there are the usual Tuesday night activity contests: 144 MHz 6th November and 4th December; 432 MHz 13th November and 11th December; 1.3 GHz 20th November and 18th December; 50 MHz 27th November (not in December due to it the fourth Tuesday being Christmas Day). Times are 2000 – 2230hrs UTC. Sunday 2nd December is the 144 MHz Affiliated Societies Contest. Operation is from 0900 – 1700hrs UTC and the exchange is RST and locator. Score is simply 1 point per kilometre with no multipliers. Individuals need to be RSGB members but groups just have to be members of an affiliated Society. Clubs may not operate more than 50 miles from the formal club meeting place. Also between 26th and 29th December are the Christmas Cumulatives on 6m, 4m, 2m and 70cms. Each period of operation is from 1400

Page 7: COULSDON AMATEUR TRANSMITTING SOCIETY G4FUR M1FUR … · 2019. 10. 20. · thinking about standing for election. As usual, it is hoped to provide mince pies and wine at this event

7

to 1600 hrs UTC. Exchange is RST and locator square and the score is made up of 1 point per QSO x number of countries x locator square. On HF there is the Club Calls Contest on Saturday 10th November between 2000 and 2300hrs UTC. It's Top Band operating between 1870-1990 kHz and it's SSB only. Exchange is Report, Serial Number and either "Club Station", "Club Member" or "No Club", plus a 4-letter club abbreviation. Also, on Wednesday 14th November is the 80m Sprint contest. Operation is between 2000 – 2100hrs UTC and is SSB only. Exchange is Other station’s callsign + Sending station's callsign + Serial Number + Name (Sounds complicated!). There are 2 sections, either low power (max 100 watts) or QRP (less than 10 watts). The CW section is on 29th November, with times and exchange the same as for SSB. Now is a good time to start thinking about what we would like to do in 2013. VHF There will be the usual Tuesday night activity contests and I would like to see if we can get a few more members to take part. When an entry is submitted as part of a club entry, (unless things change) the individual scores of each team member are tabled for the respective club entry. Why don't we have a competition between ourselves with some sort of award, trophy or prize available at the end of the year when the results are published? March will see the 144/432 MHz 24hr contest (known amongst CATS as the Brass Monkey's Contest) but unless there is an overwhelming majority that wish to participate, then I think we should resign any activity to individual entries from our respective QTH's. Agree? Others we could consider-: 144 MHz Trophy, 50 MHz Trophy, VHF NFD, Aug low power plus any of the others on offer. The range on VHF/UHF/SHF is very wide. HF Again, a range of contests to choose from, either CW or SSB or both. I believe we should give strong consideration to entering SSB Field Day again. It was a great success (irrelevant of our 2012 score) and

there is definite scope to improve on this September's entry (both aerial and manpower). I will look to publish a contest calendar next month after getting YOUR views of what contesting you wish to do next year. I will also look to publish some results of this year's efforts once they are released from the respective contest committees. Please do let me have your views by 30th November 2012 via the new CATS Contest email address below: Andy Briers G0KZT [email protected]

I have a number of aerials that I can call upon to use at my QTH, including my own vertical co-linear and a 7 element ZL special, and CATS Tonna beams for both VHF & UHF. During 2012 I have been on several activity contests that take place on Tuesday evenings. The aerial option usually falls between the vertical and the 7 element beam and which one I use is dependent upon the time available to install the pump up mast. The only permanently installed aerial is the vertical. At this point we can rule out the vertical as an option and, dare I say, even rule out taking part as the stations heard are fewer and weaker. This is common on all of its three bands; 6m, 2m & 70cms. The cross polarization combined with the lower gain produces dismal results. My findings are based on 2 VHF entries that I have submitted this year, March with the 7 element ZL Special and October with the club 17 element Tonna. For both contests, some of the variables are the same. The transceiver consists of my Kenwood TS-2000 running 100 watts and the mast at its full height of 12 metres. In the March contest I worked a total of 55 stations with the furthest station being PD2TW in JO33FI at 502km. I had 12 multiplier squares (only UK based squares count as multipliers). My total score was 69504 points In the October I worked a total of 57 stations

Page 8: COULSDON AMATEUR TRANSMITTING SOCIETY G4FUR M1FUR … · 2019. 10. 20. · thinking about standing for election. As usual, it is hoped to provide mince pies and wine at this event

8

with the furthest station being DL4KCA in JO30JX at 484km. I had 10 multiplier squares and my total score was 63400 points. I have reproduced the VHFCC generated maps that you can view when you submit your entry. They both look very similar with a few more stations in Northern England in March but less on the near continent. My remarks for the March event were that conditions were good while, as it was only a short time ago, I recall that the October conditions seemed flat. It was also wet and windy so low pressure would have been evident across the country.

While it will have more gain in the given direction with several stations reporting I was louder than usual, the 17 element beam has a narrower beam width. I believe this becomes a disadvantage as you don't hear those stations perhaps 20 to 30 degrees from the heading. But what if the conditions had been better in October? The true answer is I don't know and

without having both aerials switchable on the same mast, it is difficult to make a true comparison. But, I believe the answer lies in the middle with perhaps an 11 element beam giving the best of both worlds! In the meantime I will continue with the 7 element beam as it is easier to assemble and has a lesser impact on the neighbours! 73 de Andy G0KZT
