Unfortunately, studies show the answer is yes - money can and does ruin many rela-tionships, every day . When it comes to find-ing your soul mate, it is crucial to ensure you have also found your financial mate. While money isn’t the most romantic sub-ject to broach, experts recommend couples start talking about finances right before

moving in together or getting engaged, to avoid any major prob-lems down the road.

According to research from Jeffrey Dew, at Utah State University, arguments over finances are a prime risk factor for divorce. The 5 most common arguments couples reported were: chores, spend-ing time together, sex, money and in-laws. Dew found that across all income levels and both genders, money was the most-cited issue when things got (negatively) heated. And it’s not just lack of funds that causes couples to fight. Con-flicting money management styles and personalities are the real friction causers, and most financial arguments tend to bring a plethora of underlying issues into a hostile context.

When couples are constantly fighting over the same topics, there is usually something deeper going on than who spent what. For instance, a spouse constantly overspending might be seek-

ing more attention, or a person being restrictive over spending might be feeling insecure. What’s more, money has a ten-dency to extravagate any tensions already in a re-lationship and that’s why it’s easier for more afflu-ent couples to gloss over problems.

To avoid the risk of hav-ing money issues ruin your relationship, ex-perts suggest:Talking About It. We all equate different values and meaning to mon-ey, and in order to be successful financial partners, couples need to be frank about their views and current financial standings.Setting Priorities Together. Creating a budget together and establish-ing savings goals that take into account both individuals’ financial per-sonalities will increase the chance of success. Negotiating. Experts say money savers and spenders can have long, happy marriages if they remain respectful and supportive of the oth-er’s money values. Coming up with a compromise is key.

* Take advantage of unexpected money: If you receive a significant influx in funds, such as a lump-sum bonus, insurance payout, tax refund, divorce settlement or inheritance, avoid the lure of spending frivolously and think about the long-term. If you are willing to assume the risk, consider investing some, or even all of the funds.

* Try not to sacrifice growth for safety: Guard against being too passive in your approach to retirement investing. Be strategic by increasing your level of involvement and make investment decisions based on your retirement liquidity needs and risk tolerance, which is essential to building a robust portfolio.

* Take care of your health now: Practicing preventive healthcare can make an impact on your bottom line by lowering healthcare costs and allowing you to contribute more to your long-term future. It can also help cut costs during retirement and will hopefully lead to a longer and healthier life, too.

* Consider waiting to collect Social Security: While everyone’s situation is different, if you can delay retirement, you may be able to reap significant rewards. By working longer or using income from other sources first, your Social Security benefit grows 8 percent each year until you reach age 70 in the current market.

The bottom line is: while both men and women should invest as much as they can, as early as they can, women face some different realities, and they should stay mindful of them.

to practice your skills or learn a new technique.5. Prepare a romantic candlelit dinner at home using one of our heart-healthy recipes.6. Spice it up – try cooking with healthier seasonings and avoid prepackaged mixes that maycontain a lot of salt. Instead, add some spice with some fresh hot peppers. 7. Still craving something sweet? Send or share a fruit basket with your loved one that has natural sugar as well as healthy nutrients instead of sending sweets with processed sugars.8. Sharing is caring – if you do go out for a romantic dinner date, order one entrée to share. Many restaurant servings are enough for two – splitting will keep you from overdoing it.9. Take it slow – if you were gifted a luxurious box of chocolates from your sweetie stick it in the fridge or freezer and enjoy in moderation over several weeks.10. Give to one another by giving back. Ask a date to volunteer with you at a local charity. Giving back is a healthy habit that will boost your mood and beat stress.

We compiled some tips from The American Heart Association, because we know your sweetheart may have the key to your heart, but a proper diet and regular physical activity are the key to a healthy heart. So, this Valentine’s Day, indulge your sweetheart with a heart-healthy gift or date:

1. Rather than tempting your beloved with chocolates, consider a gift that has more permanence. Search for a poem that describes your feelings and write it on beautiful paper for a handmade Valentine.

2. One of the best things you can do for your heart is to give up smoking or help a loved one quit. Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death.3. Quality time is one of the most meaningful gifts. Bundle up and plan an active outing such as ice skating or, if you’re feeling adventurous, visit an indoor rock wall!4. Cooking at home is an excellent way to control the quality and amounts of what you eat. Take your date to a local cooking class

It’s a healthy practice to reevaluate your retirement plan as you grow in your career or go through life changes. And ladies should be the first to secure a realistic reassessment. Why? Men and

women are not created equal; and neither is their retirement plan. Many tend to discard differences such as longer life spans, as well as unique career patterns. A husband and a wife of the same age, earning the same salary and looking to retire during the same year need to account for different factors. This is true even if they share a household, hold joint responsibility for their finances and equally contribute to the amount of incoming funds.

According to a recent Merrill Edge Report, nearly six in 10 women fear not having enough money throughout retirement, and their amounts are notably higher than their male counterparts. It is important that both women and men recognize the retirement landscape is changing, and proactively address the factors and situations that are personally unique to them to help ensure a financially secure retirement.

So what can women do to better prepare? How can they plan to address these factors and live comfortably in retirement? Here are a few important tips:

* Start now to maximize contributions: Save and invest as soon as you can through your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or 403(b) account, or set up an automatic transfer from your bank or brokerage account into your personal IRA, Simplified Employee Pension (SEP-IRA) or SIMPLE IRA. Whatever options you choose, aim to increase and diversify your contributions as frequently as possible. But, remember that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in declining markets.

The San Francisco Zoo is giving the spurned and broken-hearted a new reason to mark Valentine’s Day - the chance to adopt a giant scorpion or hissing cockroach named after a heart-trampling ex.

For those suffering the sting of rejection, the zoo rec-ommends the giant hairy scorpion.

“Just like you-know-who, when a suitable victim wanders by, the scorpion grabs the doomed crea-

For those feeling especially wronged, the zoo also gives the option of having a notification sent to the person behind the heartbreak.

Naming rights start at $25, and the spite money goes to a good cause, the zoo said. In both cases, the donations will be used to support research and conservation efforts.
