All classrooms have now been given four iPads use by students – a huge thank you to the Board and Parents Association for funding these. All iPads have initially been set up with the same apps. Additional apps will be added in the future. Click here to see a list of the apps we are currently using. During the next three weeks all our students will be involved in Cross Country races. We have some future champions in the making and I wish all our student the best of luck knowing they will rise to the challenge. Parents are reminded that the Senior Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 7th May and the Junior Cross Country on the 21st May. There is more detailed information included in the newsletter. We are currently having problems with a number of teenagers causing damage to school facilities outside school hours. They have been climbing up walls, downpipes and damaging spouting, running across roofs,

jumping from one block to another and graffiting walls. If you are in our school grounds at any stage and observe children on roofs or causing damage, we’d appreciate you calling the Police. We are particularly interested in identifying four people. If you know these people we’d appreciate hearing from you. STEPHEN HARRISON Principal ICAS AT COTSWOLD SCHOOL All entries to the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) exams are now closed. The revised timetable for ICAS exams is as follows.

Computer Science - Thursday May 15

Maths - Tuesday 12 August As this is an external exam we are unable to offer catch up tests or alternative sitting dates or times. We are also unable to refund entrance fees. Good luck to all those who have entered. MATHS WORKSHOPS World of Maths is a unique traveling Maths Show that provides fun, colourful, hands-on, mathematical, problem solving activities for student participation in school visits since 1990. The activities or “displays” have been invented/designed and manufactured by World of Maths and therefore would not be found anywhere else in the world. The program has been designed to cater for all abilities with 34 activities covering ages from 5 to 14 year old. This is a hands on maths workshop for the whole school happening for groups of classes on the following dates:

Thursday 22nd May, 2014 SKETCHING WORKSHOP Children will participate in one sketching workshop in which they will learn to draw an animal. Children work from mounted animals and projected images. They learn how to break complex shapes down into simple ones, portray distinguishing features and how to use sketching pencils to convey surfaces and textures. Sketching workshops will be held for groups of classes on the following dates:

PARKING AT OUR SCHOOL GATEWAYS Please note the following parking restrictions at our school gateways: Cotswold Avenue A three minute parking limit has been placed on all parking spaces directly outside the school gateway – from the school gateway to the school driveway entrance during the following periods: 8.15am – 9.15am 2.30pm – 3.15pm This has been done to establish a drop-off zone outside our school gate for parents who would like to drop their children off without entering the school grounds. Martbern Crescent A no parking area has been established directly outside our school entrance on both sides of Martbern Crescent. This restriction is for the following periods:

Please also ensure you do not block resident’s driveway access points. SCHOOL CARPARK The school carpark is for staff and service vehicles only. Parents are not permitted to park, pick-up or drop-off students in this area, cycle or use it as a pedestrian access way. Your cooperation would be appreciated. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS A note for your calendar’s. Heritage Productions will be at school on Wednesday 23rd July, 2014 to take school photographs for this year. TERM 2, 2014 ACTIVITY FEE INVOICES Invoices for Term 2, 2014 activity fees went home with students on the last week of Terrn 1, items that will be included in this invoice are listed below (other items may also be added that were not known about at the time of this newsletter):

Sketching Workshop – $4.50 (Whole School) Children will participate in one sketching workshop in which they will learn to draw an animal.

Maths Workshop - $6.40 (Whole School) A hands on maths workshop for the whole school.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve – $11.00 (Rooms 16 & 18 only) An educational programme about nature and endangered birds of New Zealand.

Museum Trip – Dinosaur Lesson - $2.00 (Room 25 only)

Room 25 will participate in a Dinosaur & Fossil lesson at the Canterbury Museum as part of our Dinosaur Inquiry Topic. We will have the opportunity to explore other galleries as part of our trip. Parent help will be required for transport and supervision.

Junior School Gymnastics – $12.00 (Y0-Y3)

Junior School Classes will visit the Christchurch School of Gymnastics for a Celebration Day. STUDENT ABSENCES Please, for absences over 3 days you must notify the Office as well as the Class Teacher, either by email to [email protected] or a written note. Please also state the reason eg holiday in NZ or O/Seas, illness etc. ARE YOU OUR NEXT LIBRARIAN? This term our Student Voice is running a Librarian for a Day competition. Use your fabulous Cotswold Caring manners and you might be entered into the raffle to be Cotswold’s Librarian for a Day! One winner will be chosen during Week 3 of this term to issue and return library books from the class rooms, select and order new ones from catalogues and visit a bookshop at Northlands to buy some new books for our Information Centre. You will have a fun-filled day being Cotswold’s Apprentice Librarian! TRAFFIC DELAYS Please remind children to wait in the Office if you are delayed. If you know you are going to be late please phone the office so that our staff can reassure your children that you are on your way. FLU VACCINE Seasonal Influenza vaccination is again being offered free for all people aged 6 month to under the age of 18year in Canterbury. The vaccine helps protect against the Influenza which causes serious disease that spreads rapidly in the school environment, to homes and the wider community. The only effective way for people to protect themselves is to get vaccinated. School holidays is a good time to get your children vaccinated, the vaccination is available through your general practice team. Be flu strong this winter. CANTERBURY PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ ARTISTIC & RHYTHMIC GYMNASTIC COMP If you have a daughter or son (8 years or older) who belongs to a Gymnastic or Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and would like them to enter or find out more information about these two competitions please see Mr Harper by 17th May. BRING BACK BULLRUSH Back by popular demand….Year 2–6 Bullrush (Tuesday 12.55pm – 1.25pm). Girls and boys who are interested in taking part in Bullrush can register ‘on-line’ on the Cotswold Website. Bullrush sessions will take place on Tuesday, 12:55-1:25pm. The first Bullrush session will take place on 13th May. Participants will need a change of clothes and a mouth guard. NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS’ DAY Eight students will be attending the National Young Leaders’ Day with on Tuesday 20th May 2014 (09.30-2.30pm). This event provides a variety of guest speakers who inspire, motivate and reflect on what it is to be a young leader and making the most of every opportunity offered to you. The speakers share their own life experiences and discuss the importance of making responsible life choices. Further information regarding the National Young Leaders’ Day can be found on www.nyldnz.org. WILLOWBANK WILDLIFE RESERVE VISIT – ROOMS 16 & 18 As part of their Inquiry programme for Term 2, Rooms 16 and 18 will be focusing on Science – native and endangered birds of New Zealand (the Living World). To support this topic they will be visiting Willowbank Wildlife Reserve to participate in an education programme about the native and endangered birds of New Zealand, their predators, the impact of humans on their habitat and what we can do to prevent the extinction of a species.

PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER MAY 2014

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS The Christchurch Entertainment book team have put together another fantastic new Entertainment Book/Digital Membership for 2014/2015, this includes an additional 56 offers, adding extra value to an already fantastic product. This year the brand new Digital Membership is launched so you can have access to your vouchers via your smartphone. The Entertainment Books are still $65 ($13 of that comes to us). We have six bonus offers worth up to $240 for the first 50 people who order an entertainment from the Cotswold School Parents Association. QUIZ NIGHT This event will take place on Friday the 6th of June. Attached to this newsletter is a registration form to complete and hand in (with money) to the red lock box in the office foyer. This night will be styled along the same lines as last time. Each team can have a themed dress up style and appropriate team name. Teams are groups of 1 to 8 people (we can place you in a team with others if you don't want to be on your own!), at a cost of $15 per person. We will provide a light supper and tea and coffee. Please bring along your own nibbles and BYO alcohol. We will be running raffles and the 'roll a coin to win a bottle of spirits' games. MUFTI-DAY An All Blacks themed black and white dress up day on Friday the 6th of June. Gold Coin donation very much appreciated. OUR SCHOOL PROJECT The association has signed up for this new quiz based fundraising scheme. Visit www.ourschoolproject.org and nominate Cotswold School, answer some quiz questions and the association can collect some much needed fundraiser dollars!

MEETING DATES The Parents Association get together on a Tuesday night from 7.30pm in the school staffroom. The next meeting date is the 27th May.

SUBWAY OR SUSHI (FROM SUSHI-YA) The next date for this is Wednesday the 4th June. Money to be in by 3pm on Friday 30th of May (as Monday 2nd June is Queens Birthday). SUBWAY - The Subway School Lunch Programme consists of a 6” sub, small juice and a cookie. The lunches

are made fresh the morning of delivery and each sandwich is made to the student’s individual taste. Each sub

SUSHI - The Sushi is from Sushi-Ya and comes in 4, 6 and 8 piece packs with a small juice. Prices are on the attached order form. Please note we have had to increase our prices this year due to our suppliers putting up their prices, we have kept it at a small increase of 50c for each item. LEGO Club Lego Simple & Powered Machines - Junior Build & Design For 5 – 7 year olds. Held each Saturday from 1pm - 2.30pm Starts Saturday 10th May and runs for 8 weeks finishing 28th June. Kids will learn about gears, pulleys, motors, levers, ratchets and structures while having great fun building machines with a combination of Technic Lego and the Crazy Contraptions sets. Lego Powered Machines - Creative Mechanics For 8 – 11 year olds. Held each Saturday from 3pm - 4.30pm Starts 10th May and runs for 8 weeks finishing 28th June. Kids will learn about structures and mechanics while having fun building with Technic Lego. They will also learn to collaborate and be challenged to think about what they have built! This fun 8 week course builds on what is covered in our Lego Powered Machines course with more complex models and the introduction of Robotics. Coding Club Graphical Coding with Scratch on the Raspberry Pi For 8 – 12 year olds. Held each Saturday from 2.30pm - 4pm Starts Saturday 10th May and runs for 8 weeks finishing 28th June. The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized computer. Scratch is a programming language. It is a visual language and is very easy for young learners to use. Python Programming on the Raspberry Pi For 11 – 15 year olds. Held each Wednesday from 6pm -7.30pm Starts Wednesday 14th May and runs for 8 weeks finishing 2nd July. Python is a popular programming language used by Google, the New York Stock Exchange, and NASA and is considered very easy to learn. CIMM Maths Club For 8 – 12 year olds. Held each Tuesday & Thursday from 4pm - 5pm Starts week 2 (13th May) and runs for 8 weeks (16 sessions) finishing 3rd July. CIMM program has a dramatic impact on the mathematical competence of children as they gain the ability to visualize, manipulate and express sound mathematical ideas.
