COTSWOLDSTYLE AUGUST 2015 9

W e’ve headed to the South West thisAugust issue of Cotswold Style to ourfavourite holiday destination on the

English coast. Salcombe in Devon could easily beregarded as Cotswolds-on-Sea at this time of year (see The CotswoldGent), so Fashion Editor, Yvette Brentnall took her creative team to thebeautiful seaside town to shoot holiday scenes depicting the glamorouslocation and what it has to offer for the family holiday. Claire in theCounty heads further south to the idyllic St. Mawes in Cornwall and EdDurley, tests drive a vehicle to get you and your brood all packed up forthe journey down the M5, while Interiors Editor, Emeline Watchornhas created some inspirational looks from the coast and Shelle Duffincooks up a beach BBQ.Locally there is plenty happening outdoors, with a cultural ramble

around our local countryside, clay pigeon shooting in Andoversford andCamilla Bassett-Smith met with Jekka McVicar whose herb farm inAlveston introduces us to a whole new ‘herbilicious’ experience. Whilston the subject of gardening, our Real Life feature this month, is theinspirational John Sutherland, who has been the allotment maestro ofCheltenham for over 50 years! The quality of our children’s education is an never-ending thought

process and our MPs have been campaigning in Parliament for extrafunding for their constituencies, as Gloucestershire is still one of thelowest funded education authorities in the country. We have profiledsome of the county’s leading independent schools for parents who maybe making a choice to educate their children privately and Kate Justicetalks us through the process of choosing her son’s secondary education. Finally we have some great competitions for you to enter; a month’s

worth of Personal Training from Cotswold Style’s fitness expert,Luciano Kydd and a VIP day at the Gatcombe International HorseTrials with a Spa Day at the illustrious Whatley Manor Hotel.

A llotmenteering must be thesecret to a long, healthy, happylife and the key to eternalyouth, if John The Merlin

Maestro is anything to go by. JohnSutherland has been growing fresh foodand flowers for his friends and family atthe same plot for over 50 years - and he alean, mean, allotmenting machine, aged85 with two new hips and matchingknees! The Hall Road allotments situated in

the leafy suburb of Leckhampton inCheltenham are a labyrinth of freshlymown narrow paths, dividing finely hoedbeds, retaining prolific greens, displaying ariot of colourful flowers. You could evenmistake them for part of Britain inBloom. The plot is a heavenly scene nestled

below the backdrop of Leckhampton Hilland The Devil’s Chimney, with fabulousvistas of the entire escarpment. As Imeandered the colourful maze to thegentle hum of the honeybee, St Peter’schurch bells pealed in the distance andthe occasional ding of metal on stoneindicated the digging, hoeing and weedinggoing on behind shimmering screens ofgreen. This is a place of peace andmemories and it soothes the soul to takein this scene, with its fluffy cocoacoloured earth and seedlings burstingthrough the finely tilled soil. Neat rowsof tumbling leaves, wigwams of Frenchbeans and hedges of sweet peas, iridescent walls of runner beans, rills ofperpetual spinach, tunnels of raspberriesand statuesque globe artichokes -exercising, producing food and puttingthe world to rights, all in the name ofgardening.John Sutherland chats to me as he

decants anti-blackfly potion from acrumbling box into a spray-bottle, “Mynon-chemical method of ‘pinching out’has not abated the army descending onmy broad beans!” he professes. Sportingglowing tan, playful blue eyes, a quick wit

and a sparkling personality, John has aplethora of pearly words of wisdom andat least one thought for each day. He’s upat first light and is busy with his plotwhile most of us slumber. “As you getolder you get wiser,” John tells me with atwinkle in his eye. “I have worked my wayup the allotment ladder over the yearsgraduating from the far end under thetrees with sandy soil, to the premiernumber one spot by the gate for easyaccess and next to the water source for‘Mrs Hosepipe’ (his wife of 64 years), todo her job! Without doubt the mainchange noted here in the allotments overthe fifty years, has been the influx ofpetticoats. The other ‘Dad’s Army’geriatrics and I are being overtaken bywomen - they are either side of me and atthe top!” This must be another ingredientto his youthful persona and immaculategardening get-up.John is a former Pates Grammar

School boy. He started his career in abank and then joined the Navy in the“Robbers Branch” he pronounces, gleefully reminiscing, “I was the mostpopular bloke aboard ship as I had all the

goodies!” Following this, John worked atUnilever for 40 years and met his wife,Diana whilst on their bicycles inCheltenham. When asked what Johnthinks the best thing is about his wife hechuckles, “Diana keeps me going and thesecret to a successful marriage iscompromise - weighted on my side ofcourse and the allotment has always beenmy refuge from my large family!” (Theyhave 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 13great grandchildren.)John is a very busy man. Not only is he

at the allotments for at least a couple ofhours most mornings but he has alwaysbeen a keen tennis player and wasSecretary of Dowty Tennis Club foryears. John plays snooker every Thursdaynight (which is where his nickname ‘TheMerlin Maestro’ comes from, as hemysteriously pots blacks) and he andDiana walk every day and swim threetimes a week together. He ponders,“Most irksome, as some of these ladiesare passing me swimming now and I usedto be a 8/10 swimmer. You’ve got tokeep the momentum going in life – weshould all get moving more – we all sitdown too much. We should get up earlierand go to bed later.”John rattles off his inventory of

vegetables; “Fifty tomato plants, onehundred runner bean plants, one hundredleeks, three rows of potatoes, three rowsof broad beans, five courgettes, beetroot, carrots, sweetcorn – the flavour andnutritional value is enhanced when yougrow your own. I’ve never beenmechanised and have always used a spadeand fork – a neighbour with a rotovatorasked, why don’t you become mechanisedJohn? My response was that the industrialrevolution is over and anyway you can’tget the weeds out with a machine.”The secret to bountiful crops is feeding

and oxygenating the soil. John tells me, “Iam known as King of the Compost - Icurrently hold three compost crates withplenty of grass mowings for nitrogen,

beech leaves incorporated with sulphateof ammonia to speed up the process ofgetting a good balance of humus, whichin turn gives a good ratio of water and air- so important for the right balance ofsoil management.” How satisfying tocreate your own compost from a slow, gentle breaking-down chemistry overtime.John seems to have a deep-rooted

feeling for the land and takes such greatpride in growing fresh life from his plot. His allotment is a place of contemplationand friendship, as much as a necessaryplace to grow food.I love gardening for all the wonderful

benefits it encourages, such aspreservation of wildlife and green spacesand personal qualities of patience, worthwhile exercise, interaction andlearning from people, like John.I think I need to take a leaf or two out

of John’s book if I am going to enjoytwenty-five years of healthy retirement!

Sam Lewis, Cheltenham: Thank you for staying positive and helpfulthroughout our house purchase. House-Moves offer a personal touch and Iwould definitely recommend them.Felicity Fildes, Cheltenham: This is a unique agency; not only that it is runby three delightful women with their differing personalities and individualgifts in the business, but they are "on the ball", constantly keeping one up todate as to progress etc. Without them, or with another agent, I would nothave stayed the course. It was a prolonged and nerve racking experience.Don't go anywhere else. Courtesy, perception and a sense of humour wereparamount. They put all other agencies in the shade.Katy Gibson, Cheltenham: found this estate agent by sheer good luck.My one bed flat had been on the market with a well known establishedCheltenham Estate Agent for over four months without an offer, despite anasking price reduction (must have been reasonable as it's the price House-Moves got for me). I saw on right move they had sold a similar flat so I gavethem a call. I had multiple viewings (with very detailed constructive feedback)

and then I had three offers within two weeks and a brilliant service thereafter. When I told the other Estate Agent I was moving the flat to House-Moves,to say they didn't care is an understatement. I would recommend House-Moves Ltd to anyone, bigger is not better, personable, professional andcompletely reliable; that's better.Carol Davies, Cheltenham: Rolls Royce service from valuation to finalcompletion, very professional, good communication and feedback, woulddefinitely use them again, and would most definitely recommend them !!Ryan Newman, Cheltenham: A very professional service offered and allstaff were helpful throughout. Stayed in contact at all times during thepurchase and was kept up to date. Very efficient and highly recommended.Excellent. Many thanks.Chrissie Head, Cheltenham: Friendly, professional, reliable service. Greatlocal knowledge & a passion for selling houses. Moved to House - Movesfrom a larger agent who failed to deliver. Would highly recommend House – moves.

Lucy Baldwin, Cheltenham: Absolutely thrilled that the sale of my flat inCheltenham went so smoothly and quickly with House-Moves! What makes House-Moves differentfrom the competition? With a whopping 74 estate agents inCheltenham, we understand that choosingthe right agent can be a mind field.House-Moves has been operating for over2 years and the biggest testimony we havethat shows we differ from the otheragents, is our testimonials left from realclients and our growing number of repeatbusiness. We are a family run business soour reputation is extremely important. Weoffer a real personal service, we openlonger hours to be as flexible as possibleto both buyers and sellers. We facilitate allviewings and provide honest and promptfeedback to our clients. We also offer adedicated after-sales progression servicewhich is all in house, we liaise withsolicitors to ensure the sale is running assmoothly as possible, keeping both clientsup to date throughout the process.

A lot of agents claim to offer a‘personal service’ can you tell uswhat is ‘a personal service’ toHouse-Moves?For House-Moves it’s about going thatextra mile. We listen to our clients’ needsfrom the outset, taking into account theirpersonal circumstance. With House-Moves you’re not just a number, we care. For example, some of our clients areelderly and don’t drive; we would drivethose clients to viewings, arrange solicitorsto visit them, just to make things easierand take all the hassle and worry out ofmoving. Offering flexible appointmenttimes outside of normal hours, forexample, we understand many peoplework until 6/7pm these days so if we canmeet you at 8pm for a viewing we will doso. We are licensed members of theNAEA and The Property Ombusman; weadhere to a code of practise, this reassuresbuyers and sellers they will receive the bestpossible service.

Tell us about your backgrounds? The House-Moves office consists ofChristine, Michelle and Joanna andbetween us we have over 20 years’

experience of working within the propertyindustry. We have worked for largecorporates for many years and just feltthat some had become complacent andmore about numbers rather than peopleand had lost touch with what sellinghouses should be about. We wanted tocreate an environment where the clienttruly feels we are working for them. Ourfocus is selling houses, for the bestpossible price, ensuring all of ourclients receive a service so good thatthey would want to recommend us tofriends and family.

Being Cheltenham based, do youoperate in the Cotswolds too?We operate mainly in Cheltenham andGloucester though we have also hadsome properties in more rural villages.

What advice would you give topeople looking at selling theirproperty to make it more desirablebefore it goes on the market? The property market is moving quickly inthe current climate so we would adviseour clients to be as organised as possible.Put in place a solicitor from the outset sothat when you get a buyer the solicitorscan move quickly.

What steps should somebody expectto take when putting their house on

the market, is it quite a quick processthese days with technology being themain portal when selling houses? It can be quite a quick process yes but ithas to be done correctly. Firstly wewould organise for somebody to comeand provide a free valuation. We usefacts, figures and comparable evidencefrom the current market when doing thisand set a realistic price from the outsetas this provides clients with a realisticgoal from day one. We would thenarrange for photos to be taken.Nowadays photos are your shop window, you have to be clear, tidy and presentedin the best possible way. Floor plans arealso very important. We can then getthings moving with your main portalssuch as Rightmove, Zoopla,Primelocation, we also advertise onFacebook and local press which ensuresmaximum exposure.

What commission rates do you charge? We offer very competitive and flexiblerates. To discuss how we can help get youmoving, Call, Email or pop into theoffice.

L ast month I mentioned how I hadnoticed that a lot more people werekeeping and rejuvenating pieces of

furniture, rather than simply replacing withsomething new.Nothing illustrates this point better than a

job I did last week. While visiting some friends recently for a

glass of wine or two, this very subject came up.They are in the process of restoring a largeRegency house in Gloucester and at the stagewhere, having completed most of the buildingwork and alterations, colour schemes andfurniture are now being, shall we say, ‘debated’.One item that stood out rather was a

beautiful pine dresser base (well I thought so!),which was destined for an already full skipoutside the front door. This was a classicexample of stripped pine, stencil decorated intrue 1980’s fashion (we all did it), thanks toJocasta Innes and ‘Paint Magic’. I can certainlyunderstand their urge to ‘skip it’. It lookedtired, rough and battered round the edges andin need of a serious makeover (a bit like me ona Sunday morning!).A few drinks later and decision made, I

would collect said dresser base in a few daysand see if there is anything I could do with it.I love projects like this because having seen thetransformation many times, I know that thefinished result is likely to be beyond anyexpectations the owner may have. These pieces

were made to last. Obviously wearand tear, small children, dogs and catsall make a mark or two but the shapeand style is all there and any repairsare usually quite superficial.Once in the workshop the first job

is to remove the dated replacementknobs, fill all the holes, repair thedrawers, seal the knots and startpainting. I suggested we use some facetedcrystal knobs and my friends agreed and leftthe choice of colour to me. As I usually mixmy own colours, using natural earth pigmentsand china clay paint, I decided to go for aslightly darker than usual ‘Cotswold Stone’ andbrighten up the inside of the drawers andcupboards with one of my favourite blues. The before and after effect, is again clear to

see. In this case I’ve added a ‘during’ picture

too. The result was extremely well received andthe search is on to find a few more pieces thatcan be saved from the skip!If you’re thinking ‘well actually I quite like

the old pine and stencil look’ don’t worry, I’msure it will be back again at some point!

WeBrits seem to be having a propersummer for once andwe shouldn’t have toface 5amcheck-ins for that charter flightstuffed to the gills with the great unwashedto get a proper tan. Although sadly, mycrystal ball didn't tell me that 2months agowhen in amoment of panic, facedwith theprospect of another summer holidayspent enduring chilly evenings huddledaround the BBQ and in a desperateattempt to enjoy some summer living, Ibooked a holiday with ClubMedwhichinvolved getting on said charter flight. My sometimes better andwiser half,

gently remindedme of the last time I hadtravelled charter with him, when Imanaged to have a spectacularlyembarrassing full blown panic attack, involving some attractive hyperventilatingand an hour lying down on a decidedlysticky airplane floor trying to calm down. Iregained a normal breathing patterneventually but it was not remotely yogicand I did not achievemindfulness. It wasnot a good look overall but luckily we hadnot beenmarried long and I could do littlewrong inmy beloveds eyes and there werethen no offspring yet to traumatise.Thankfully I can report that charter

flights seem to have improved. We had alittle legroomand pleather seats in analmost Farrow&Ball shade of grey. I evenbraved an in-flight toasty, which was 'madeto order'. This foolhardy decision wasnecessary because of course, despite thetwo hour check-in, the lovely people at so-and-so airlines thought it would bemuchmore fun to herd us through endless ropesfor over an hour, rather than allow us timeto get some breakfast at silly o'clock in themorning. The toasty was actually good-ishand I didn't spend the rest of the flight onthe loo regrettingmymoment ofdesperation. Thanks to a blissfully uneventful flight, I

was able to get onwith some appropriatelylowbrow entertainment and an excellentintroduction to the summer.... limitlessmagazines obsessing over celebrity beachbodies. The husband fails to understandthat ogling the Teflon torsos of the cast ofTOWIE and endless boy bands and thatTaylor + Calvin now equals Talvin, is farmore soporific than reading about thelatestmisguided antics of the somewhatself-styled rock star of politics, YanisVaroufakis and the tragic demise of theGreek economy. Should I have booked alastminute trip to Greece I wonder? I thinkI would rather takemy next batch of touriststerling to support the fledglingdemocracy of Tunisia.Well-versed in politics I amnot, so back

to some light-hearted summer fun. Havingmanaged to tearmyself away from thereclining bliss ofmy sun lounger andfuelled bymy probably gazillionth ‘all-

inclusive’mojito, I ampleased to report.All-inclusive generallymeans sports, whichmuch tomy delightmeans lots ofvery buff GO’s, (that abbreviates ‘GenteelOrganizers’ to the unitiated), to please theeye. They were of course very gentils and Iam sure the intention is that they werethere to teachme towaterski (fail),windsurf (double-fail) or try the trapez(not sure hanging upside down above acrowd of enthusiastic onlookers is a goodlook in yourmid-forties having breast fedtwo children, so didn’t dare go there),however I can report somemoderatesuccess with sailing (whoopwhoop!!) butthey are certainly very easy on the eye. Soif any sailing operators on the CotswoldWaterparks want some plugging in thiscolumn, you now know that there is ashameless and receptive columnist inyour vicinity.Alas, my voyeuristic activities and

mojito indulgence soon came to an end asa return to the Cotswolds was nigh. I dohope the weather holds thismonth, as I willbe taking the children off to explore thevarious Lidos the Cotswolds have to offer.Lido is the Italian word for beach andprobablymade its way to our shores viareturning visitors to the Lido di Veneziawhere bathing took place from the late19th century. How I do loveWikipedia! Ourvery own Sandford Parks Lido inCheltenhamalso gets amention as‘notable’, so inmy book thatmakes it apretty good place to start conducting ahard days research. If you see a tanned blonde, (minus

tattoos), with her nose in amag admiringDavid Gandy's pandies, again all in thename of research of course, (he has amarketing degree from the University ofGloucestershire), and attempting to orderamojito at the cafe...it could well possiblybeme.

T ennis equals Murray, footballgoes hand in hand (or foot inboot) with Mr Beckham but

when it comes to herbs, there’s only onelady at the forefront of her field andthat’s South Gloucestershire’s very ownJekka McVicar.

Most of us have had a run in withrosemary, a bash with basil or maybeeven a tinkling with thyme, but Jekka’sHerb Farm in Alveston introduces us toa whole new herbilicious experience.

From a family of cooks, she wassurrounded by herbs from a young ageand started planting her own organicherbs in 1984. Two years later, Jekkamoved with her family to the site wherethey are still based today, now with acollection of over 300 culinary herbsand a wealth of knowledge on the useof each.

There are 40 different mints alone,

from curly to grapefruit and chocolate toorange. Sage presents itself in tangerineand blackcurrant forms, to name a few.(I recently acquired the tangerine sageand have to say it is a stunner, strikingorange red flowers and an unbelievablecitric scent plus a willingness to growwith gusto).

Not content with just a herb farm, twoyears ago The Herbetum was created onsite. This is an area of raised bedsplanted with herbs according to theirspecies, name, group or region and is thefirst of its kind in this country.Wandering around the beds is a real eyeand nose-opener - so much choice, somuch scent and if accompanied by Jekkaon one of her tours, an unforgettableeducation.

‘Meadowsweet’ – sacred herb of theDruids and a favourite of RaymondBlanc, this is nature’s painkiller: the drug

that was made from it became known asaspirin. Tastes like Germolene, but don’teat too much! If arthritis is your enemy, then some celery seed tea is just thething, whilst for a bit of relaxation, catmint waves its hands of whispyfoliage in the air! Prepare to bothobserve and taste as you are guided onyour tour.

For me, the large pink pompoms ofAllium nutans reached out and rooted itsonion shoots in my purse, making itselfat home and expelling the pound coinsneeded for purchase like stones rejectedfrom the soil. A striking plant; like achive that’s had its spinach and is goingfor gold (or pink in this case).

Jekka is not the only lady in this familywith an eye for the plant world – herdaughter Hannah produces the mostexquisite pieces of artwork. It wouldseem that this family’s veins, in addition

to flowing with chlorophyll, also flowwith a certain amount of ink! ForHannah takes after her GreatGrandfather, Thomas Lowinsky, whowas a well know artist and has clearlypassed on his talents.

Now while some of us tut at the snailswho play edible twister with our hostasand others wage war on the blackfly thatmake our broad bean shoots look likecaviar coated tips, Jekka has anothercritter on her mind. Meet the RosemaryBeetle – well I hope you never do – but

just in case she comes knocking at yourshed door, here’s why you should ignoreher – she’ll strip all of your rosemary, thyme, lavender and mint before she’s asmuch as introduced herself. Plus onceshe’s settled in, you’ll never get rid ofher, although your best bet according toJekka is the good old fashioned yellowsticky traps – maybe get them ready as awarning and if she flies by perhaps she’llkeep on going on the M5. (That’s thebeetle not Jekka you understand!)

While Jekka isn’t busy tending her

plants, re-designing herb gardens for topclients, writing books and winning Goldmedals from the RHS, she is keen tobreed a new strain of thyme that canwithstand heavy rain. Following crosspollination and observing which newplants behave well, any showing promiseare propagated and then put to the test.Watch this space – I have a feeling we’regoing to see something good, but onlythyme will tell!

Have we lost our way when it comes tothe art of walking for pleasure? Faster andfaster we go, swept along by the pressuresof practicality into the paths of leastresistance. It takes determination toindulge in many of the traditionalpleasures of the countryside and walkingis the most basic and simple of them all. It’s a quietly unassumingworkout that might notget the column inches butoffers a myriad of healthbenefits - you can do italone or with friends, andit doesn’t cost a thing.Countryside walking or

‘rambling’ forms a crucialpart of our Englishheritage, springing from asmall and often illegalpastime. The history of rambling beginswith the remarkable people whocampaigned for the right to be able to‘roam’ across England and Wales. Whenthe industrial revolution took hold, countryside walking offered a welcomerelief from a polluted environment andthe stress of daily life for the many peoplenow confined to burgeoning towns andcities. Access to the countryside however, was problematic due to the EnclosuresAct which allowed private landowners toclose off their land. The RamblersAssociation and individuals like TomStephenson and MP Hugh Daltoncampaigned for walkers’ rights, resulting inover 68 years of hard fought battles to geta proper right to roam. The 140,000miles of public rights of wayacross England and Wales thatwe enjoy today, are entirely dueto their persistence anddedication.Even now the fight

between landowners andwalkers can flare up like abush fire. Whilst mostlandowners recogniseboth the rights ofwalkers and theirvalue to ruraltourism, a fewresist. They are the

ones who craftily move footpaths todogleg around their land, fence over stylesor allow for strategic placement of bulls orcows with calves adjacent to footpaths. The most notorious of them all, NicholasVan Hoogstraten, used razor wire, disusedrefrigerators and corrugated barns toblock the public right of way that snakedits way through his land on the South

Downs. His dislikeof walkers waslegendary - hereferred to them as“the greatunwashed” and“riff raff ”. He wasalso reported ascalling them“herberts” but saidhe was misquoted:

he had really meant to describe them as“perverts”. All of which makes theaforementioned efforts of otherlandowning miscreants look rather tame incomparison.Assuming you are endowed with the

sort of British grit and determination thatcasually brushes aside the efforts of aconvicted killer to inflict army type assaultson your ‘rights to roam’ your nextrambling hurdle to be attended to will beyour attire. Your walk might be as routineas they come but your outfit doesn't haveto be. Those seemingly innocuous ribs, stripes and seams on your Northface orWanderfreund are meant to connoteperformance. They aim to awaken a senseof your latent potential in the ramblingarena and that psychological effect should

not be underestimated. You want towear something that makes youfeel like you can take on anysituation you may encounterduring your walk and that youare protected and empowered. On the other hand, you don'twant to look like a nerd. Theclothing choices can beproblematic unless of course

you decide to follow in thefootsteps of ramblerStephen Gough, whorecently lost his case at the

European Court of Human Rights, wherehe had protested about his repeated arrestsfor insisting on rambling nakedthroughout the UK. Unsurprisingly hiscase was summarily dismissed – asDebretts in their guide to countrysideetiquette; there is here, an age-old way ofdoing things in rural Britain and goingnaked with a backpack simply isn’t oneof them. Our gorgeous Cotswolds offer the

perfect antidote to our pace of life - agusty hill-top path; labyrinthine dark forestfloors; the feel of different soil, peat androck; the sight of alternating sunlight andshadow sweeping across vast valleys andall for free. A garrulous, glorious ramblewill stretch tired muscles, soothe a moodand burn off some of that summer rosewine you’ve been quaffing throughout thebalmy summer evenings. Take a friend orgo alone. As Big Feastival organiser and

rambler enthusiast Alex James said, ‘thereis no better way of seeing the world, oryourself, than walking. Many people thinkit’s boring. Like anything, it’s only as boringas the people you are doing it with, or ifyou’re alone, as boring as you are’.

For over two thousand years theEast African coast has luredtravellers and traders alike frommany distant shores. Zanzibar

became the most powerful centre of arich and lucrative trade route supplyinggold, ivory and slaves and serving as themain power base for the Sultans ofOman, as well as a gateway to the Africancontinent for many European explorerssuch as Speke, Burton and Livingstone.

We headed to the exotic Tanzanianarchipelago of Zanzibar following an

action-packed safari to the Selous GameReserve and discovered a perfect slice ofparadise and dreamy finale to a perfectget away.

Stone Town is an historic trade centreand fusion of the old Indo-Arabianarchitecture and a modern new worldcreeping into the mix. My tour of StoneTown and its minarets, carved andstudded doorways, fish and spice marketstook me through a labyrinth of twistingalleyways and a winding history. I wastransported back through the centuries toancient Persia and tales of Shirazimerchants, Swahili Princesses and OmaniSultans. I saw 19th Century landmarkssuch as the House of Wonders, a formerSultan’s palace and The AnglicanCathedral Church of Christ. In the churchare displayed many fascinating discoveriessuch as a tribute to Dr David Livingstonein the form of a cross carved from part

of the tree in Zambia, under which theexplorer’s heart was buried. The world’slast open slave market is located nearbyand I still shudder at how I felt to enterthe poisonously oppressive, damp cellarsand to think of the cruelty and sufferingthat took place here.

Zanzibar boasts some of the world’sfinest beaches, world class cuisine andmost stunning boutique hotels. We werelucky enough to circumnavigate the islandstaying at different resorts and hotels toget a true flavour of this tropical islandparadise. One thing remains consistentand that is the powder soft sand andlapping, shimmering, clear water fringedby swaying coconut palms beneath azureblue skies! I loved the beaches of theSouth East boasting long swathes ofgleaming white sand into the horizon. Onemorning with the tide far out we cycledthe length of the beach soaking up thesights as we zipped along, seeing womenin brightly coloured bui-buis (Islamiccover-alls) farming sea shells, small fishand seaweed from the white coral sand, children swimming and fishermen busy inthe shallows. The watersports facilities arefantastic here too with every sort ofseaworthy vessel imaginable – a highlightfor me was some exhilarating hobi-catsailing in bath temperature water and the

novelty of not having to wear a wetsuit tokeep out the cold!

We passed avenues of mango treesladen with ripe orange fruit, equatorialrainforests of towering iridescent leavesand watched the rare Red Colobusmonkey munching on unripe fruit. Wedrove past fields with farmers labouringby-hand with pickaxes and throughcolourful towns with people busy sellingand transporting everything frommattresses on bicycles to produce inwooden carts pulled by oxen. Along oneremote stretch of road, a car width oftarmac was taken over by metres of loose

cloves drying in the sun. Eventually thetarmac ran out and we bumped over dustyroads of coral, past picturesque fishingvillages with elderly men sitting on theirverandas playing bao (a traditional boardgame), fishermen busy in their dhows andchildren playing in the water and wavingat us. Some of the beaches are so remoteand isolated that time has stood still. Wewere lucky enough to stay beside such abeach with the hotel, a series oftraditionally styled round chalets withpitched makuti roofs tucked into therocks and were treated to a luxurious staybeyond my wildest dreams.

W e girls know that it is‘The Mrs’ who makesthe choice around the

weekend destination, or at least dropsheavy hints about where she would liketo go… therefore we’ve honoured ourfirst lady by dispensing with traditionand placing the Mrs in the front whereshe belongs…This month we visit the wedding

destination of the ‘oh so’ glamorousGeorge and Amal Clooney.

VENICEOften described as one of the mostromantic cities in the world, LaSerenissima offers a tantalizing blend ofEast and West, thanks to its unbroken1,100 years as an independent empire. From the minute of arrival in Venice, visitors feel they are stepping back into amagical past, or even a giant film set.Narrow, traffic-free streets wind aroundlabyrinthine canals, and Gothic palazzoslie side by side with Oriental mosaics andByzantine domes. Yet hidden amongst thehistorical alleys, there’s a contemporaryedge to this beautiful city. World-classmodern art galleries vie for attentionalongside designer shopping, boutiquehotels and stylish bars. When the film andbiennale art festivals open, Venice trulycomes alive. Celebs flock to town to partyin grand palazzos and swanky yachts. Hereare a few of Mrs and Mr Jones’ highlights:

Out and about...Piazza San Marco is the obvious startpoint for sightseeing. This grandest ofsquares was described by Napoleon as the‘finest drawing room in Europe.’The exquisite 11th century Basilica di

San Marco is an architecturalmasterpiece and well worth a visit.Alongside, sits the imposing Palazzo

Ducale (Doges’ Palace). On the ‘SecretTour’, Mr Jones enjoyed hearing aboutthe scandalous philanderer and prisoner,Casanova. Mrs Jones, meanwhile, washappy to remind him that she wasn’taverse to leaving him behind in thetorture chamber and finding her ownCasanova for a gondola ride.To avoid the long queues for both

sights (and Mr Jones’ grumbles), it’s agood idea to pre-book tickets in advance.Away from the people and pigeons of

St Mark’s, the Rialto markets sit belowthe famous bridge. This is a fabulousplace to browse alongside locals forvibrant fruit, flowers, fresh seafood andsouvenirs. It’s said there is more art per square

mile in Venice, than in any other city. Inthe arty district of Dorsoduro, Mr Jonesheaded to the famous GalleriaAccademia and the lesser-knownMuseo del Settecento in a magnificent17th century palazzo, home to twoCanalettos.Being more of a modernist, Mrs Jones

loved the Peggy Guggenheim art

museum on the Grand Canal. Thefamous Biennale art festival (during oddyears), sees pop-up galleries appear allover the city. For tiring feet and to live life like a

Venetian, hop on a vaporetto (waterbus).Observing Mr Jones’ reluctance to ask fordirections after the third time of gettinglost, Mrs Jones armed herself with avaporetti map and a two-day pass(http://www.veneziaunica.it/en), a greatoption if you’re going to be a frequentuser.Keen to follow in the footsteps of

James Bond, Mr Jones suggested avaporetto ride across the lagoon to theisland of Murano, remembering thefamous glass museum fight.Far from the bustle of St Mark’s

Square, Murano has its own Grand Canalbut on a much smaller scale. It’s linedwith colourful buildings, restaurants and,of course to Mrs Jones’ delight, an arrayof glass shops perfect for browsing forjewellery and glassware. Be sure to headoff the main street, for a glimpse intolocal life.

Our new short haul travel section, is hostedbyour very ownCotswoldia couple,Mrs andMrJones. Theywill be thoroughly investigating destinations ideal for a little trip away. Theywon’tjust reveal vital tips oneach glamorous getawaybut also provide the inside track to ensurethedestination caters for a rangeof tastes andwallets. From the slickest city hangouts

to peaceful boltholes, youwon’t waste amoment planning your travels.

Eating...Coffee and croissants are the order of theday for breakfast Venetian-style. Yes it’strue, Italians frown upon ordering acappuccino after 11am.

For lunch on the go, the little bars inthe streets surrounding St Mark’s displayan array of delicious filled focaccia andpanini. If you’re keeping an eye on thepennies, steer away from Piazza SanMarco itself. But if Mr Jones is happy tosplash out, choose a prime table forpeople watching at the grand old CaffèQuadri (www.alajmo.it)

In the arty Dorsoduro district, reasonably priced Risoteca Oniga(www.oniga.it/eng/restaurants-in-venice.htm) in Campo San Barnaba is alovely spot for lunch or dinner. Mrs Joneswaxed lyrical about the best caprese(burrata mozzarella and tomato) saladshe’d ever had, while Mr Jones imaginedhimself as Indiana Jones, on his LastCrusade, filmed right there in the Campo.

For a mid-range priced dinner near StMark’s, Osteria da Carla (www.osteriadacarla.it) is a great little find. It has arustic feel and offers a fabulous selectionof tapas, typical Venetian fare and a goodselection of wines.

For splurging, the romantic Osteriaalle Testiere (www.osterialletestiere.it/Testiere/Welcome.html) near Santa MariaFormosa, serves exceptional seafood andhas a great wine list. Book in advance, it’ssmall and incredibly popular.

No trip to Italy would be completewithout an obligatory gelato. Look outfor artisan gelaterias, who normally makefresh gelato daily. Boutique del Gelato, between the Rialto and St Mark’s is worthsearching out. If you’re in Dorsoduro, make a beeline for Gelateria il Doge inCampo Santa Margherita.

Sundowner Time...It’s a Venetian tradition to enjoy anAperol spritz before dinner, perhapsaccompanied by a selection of cichetti(appetisers). Around the Rialto market, inSan Polo, Santa Croce and Cannaregio, look out for bacari, traditional Venetiantapas bars.

Sunset is one of the most romantictimes to head out with a gondolier alongthe canals. Mr Jones, keen to keep theprice down, accepted the hotel’s offer ofa shared ride with other guests.

He made up for it afterwards bytreating Mrs Jones to a Bellini - the best-known Venetian cocktail. The mostfamous location to have this gorgeousmix of white peach juice andprosecco is Harry’s Bar(www.harrysbarvenezia.com), eventhough it’s one of the pricier options.

As darkness falls, head back to PiazzaSan Marco, and enjoy the music at CafféFlorian (the world’s oldest café)(www.caffeflorian.com/en/) or splash outon a Vesper martini at the Gran CafféQuadri.

One of the most buzzy areas forpartying into the night is Campo SantaMargherita, a square of restaurants andbars frequented by students inDorsoduro.

Sleeping...Choose whether to stay in the morecentral but busier San Marco district, orperhaps further from the crowds in oneof the other districts, such as artyDorsoduro.Splurge: Venice is home to some trulyiconic hotels. The Belmond HotelCipriani (www.belmond.com/hotel-cipriani-venice) is four minutes by privatelaunch from San Marco, and hasunrivalled views over the lagoon andDoge’s Palace. Guest rooms are tuckedaway amongst flowering gardens and ithas a wellness centre and Olympic-sizedpool. The Hotel Danieli(www.danielihotelvenice.com) occupies awonderful location on the edge of thelagoon, minutes’ walk from Piazza SanMarco. It’s an architectural treasure andthe rooftop restaurant offers panoramicviews of the Grand Canal and the lagoon.Mid range: Hotel a la Commedia(www.commediahotel.com) is locatednear the Rialto Bridge and within 10minutes walk of St Mark’s. It offers

beautifully furnished rooms and a greatbuffet breakfast. Refresh, revive and invigorate with adeeply relaxing treatment by Jane Mann,The Organic Beautician, tested byEmeline Watchorn.Overwhelmed as we are with claims of

organic, fair trade products, in a largelyunregulated industry, it’s hard to ascertainwho exactly is telling the truth. But a visitto Jane Mann, aka The OrganicBeautician left me feeling totally reassuredthat her products really were as theypromised and the results were alsoimpressive.Working from her house in

Pitchcombe, she offers several types oftreatments from the classic facials, clarifying treatments, facial gymnastics, facial firming treatments, back cleansing,to foot and hand treatments. She workswith Dr Hauschka products so is referredto as a Dr. Hauschka Esthetician. Dr.Hauschka was inspired by Dr. Steiner inthe 1920’s who talked about rhythmcarrying life and went on to develop anew method of farming calledBiodynamics. The company thatsubsequently developed in the 1960’sproduces skin care products usingorganically/bio-dynamically grown or

responsibly wild crafted ingredients andsupports fair trade projects in places likeAfghanistan. It also uses green transportand green electricity. So the ideology isimpressive but do they work?I had opted for a 2-hour classic facial,

which starts with a warm footbath andmassage, followed by a hand, neck andshoulder massage and then the facialitself. Jane’s easy manner combined withthe footbath and consultation, made mefeel relaxed and at home. It’s a differenttype of experience to the hyper styledspa’s that we tend to head to fortreatments but I think I preferred it onaccount of how ridiculously relaxed andcalm I felt. By the time the actual facialstarted, I felt weightless and all tingly andI can’t remember all that much about itother than the sensation my face beingbrushed with a soft brush. When it sadlycame to an end, my skin felt and lookedlovely and the lymph massage also meantI felt the treatment went far beyond justmy skin.Armed with a bag full of products, I

have carried on using them at home, andbacked up by several comments fromobservant girlfriends, can say that my skin

is looking and feeling better. Jane can alsooffer specialised treatment programmestackling problems like acne and theeffects of aging and with prices startingfrom £55, I think this is an ethical andaffordable way of looking after your skin, mind, body and soul.www.theorgaincbeautician.com01453 763081,[email protected]/english

W ith over 30 years of expertisein the hair industry, brothersDarrell and Mark Blake have

created a sensational, new Barber’s in theheart of Montpellier in Cheltenham.

Mark Blake is one of the country’smost prominent Trichologists – a Doctorof hair to the uninitiated who is at theforefront of assisting both men andwomen in the treatment of hair and scalpdisorders as well as performing hairtransplants. He works from practices inCheltenham, Liverpool and at No. 10Harley Street in London. Darrell is adistinguished hairdresser who runs thehighly successful Blushes HairdresserSalons in Cheltenham, Gloucester andCirencester.

Now this ambitious duo have takenanother creative step forward to openBLAKES, a traditional Barber’s,especially for ‘the boys’ who don’t enjoysitting in an effeminate atmosphere at atypical salon.

BLAKES was founded on the beliefthat men’s grooming has now entered anew era and a new type of salon isrequired; one that successfully blendscontemporary fashion, with the besttraditional barbering.

As the world continues to evolvebarbering should not be left behindand held back by tradition.BLAKES defies convention byoffering all the services amodern man needs. It is alsothe ideal environment forteenage boys to haveaccess to a hair servicethat is masculineenough for theiryouthful mindssurrounded by afabulous, industrialthemed boysretreat ofvintage sportsequipment, great warmemorabilia

such as an Apache tail rotor whichwas shot by the Taliban inAfghanistan and Sky Sports so asnever to miss a ball during TheAshes!

BLAKES services range fromtraditional barbering tobeard trimming, skin fadesto discreetly camouflaginggrey hair - nothing is aproblem. You can bookonline/call or justsimply walk in and theQueue Com live linkon their website will

show you how busy thebarber’s is incase you are in

a hurry.

BLAKES is open early till late anddon’t close early on the weekend. Theyunderstand that people are busier thanever and flexibility is key.

They say every day is a school day andthis week at Vets on the Park that turnedout to be true. Each year all veterinarysurgeons must take part in 35 hours ofcontinuing professional development, such as attending lectures and meetingsand so we organised an in-house lectureon an exciting new therapy for dogs withosteoarthritis. It is called ‘AdiShot’ and it is a unique

new stem cell therapy that can be usedto help relieve pain and disability inoseteoarthtitis and other joint problemsin dogs. Using state-of-the-arttechnology our vets can now isolate andprepare a dog’s own stem cells from asmall sample of fat tissue taken fromunder the skin. This sample of fat isthen sent to a special laboratory, alonmgwith a small sample of your dog’s blood, where the stem cells found in the fattytissue are grown until they reach theirpeak, when a tailor-made stem cell

therapy is made especially for your dog.We then get this special stem cell therapysent back to our clinic where it isinjected into the affected joints undersedation. The incredible thing about stem cells

is that they have the ability to changeinto a range of different tissue types, including muscle, cartilage and bone. The cells are essentially the body’s ownrepair kit. They can quickly move the

areas of damaged tissue where they actto reduce inflammation and pain. Theeffects of the therapy have been shownto improve over time, with the bestresults achieved two to three monthsafter administration of the stem cells.Treated dogs show reduced levels ofpain, improved mobility, reducedlameness and less difficulty in rising. This all leads to an improved quality oflife and a reduced dependence on painmedication.

NEIL CARMICHAEL,MP FOR STROUDLast month I was elected Chairman ofthe Education Select Committee. Havingserved on this committee for the previousfive years, formed an ‘All ParliamentaryParty Group’ on School Leadership andGovernance and repeatedly promoted afocus on science, technology, engineeringand mathematics, it was an obvious postfor me to seek in the new Parliament. The election process, itself, was

interesting and intense. Once the newlyelected Parliament met for the first time, the chairs of the twenty-five selectcommittees were allocated on a roughreflection on party representation withsome bargaining over preferences.Education was confirmed as aConservative chair so I proceeded to seeknomination to stand, securing thenecessary support from my own andother parties. Two other candidates were also

nominated; former Education Minister,Tim Loughton and my colleague on theprevious committee, Caroline Nokes both

stood for election. The electorate was theentire membership of the House ofCommons so the two weeks of‘campaigning’ was all about reaching outto colleagues through internal mail, emailsand my preferred style, face-to-faceconversations.With all Select Committees needing a

chair, some candidates effectively carriedover from the last Parliament so these andseveral other vacancies were uncontested. This left twelve positions where electionstook place and Education was obviously, one of these. The alternative vote systemis used with the ballot papers consistingof a bundle of twelve papers with two tofive candidates for each vacancy beinglisted. The Speaker of the House of

Commons formally announced theelection results and details of the votingcan be found on the relevant website. The Committee will formally start work

in September, interviewing both NickyMorgan, the Secretary of State forEducation and Sir Michael Wilshaw, ChiefInspector of Schools at OFSTED. TheCommittee is likely to hold enquiries inthe first year looking at tackling theproductivity gap, testing accountabilitysystems for academies and free schools, investigating the role of the new RegionalCommissioners and highlighting childprotection with a focus on inter-agency

cooperation. Members of the public cansubmit evidence and further details can befound at the Committee’s website onwww.parliament.ukContact Neil at [email protected] or his constituencyoffice on 01453 751 572

GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN,MP FOR COTSWOLDSOne of the big issues I have been tacklingover recent weeks is that of fairer fundingfor Gloucestershire Schools. I frequentlyvisit schools across my constituency andhear at first hand the issues they are facing.Gloucestershire is one of the lowestfunded education authorities in thecountry and this puts incredible strain onthe operation of those schools. This is anissue, which I have been campaigning on

for some time and one, which a numberof schools have contacted me withconcerns about. I have already raised thiswith the Schools Minister, Sam GyimahMP and have now done so again. I wasdelighted that the Prime Ministerconfirmed that an additional £390 millionfunding for schools in low funded areaswould continue and I hope that a fairerNational Funding Formula is not in thetoo distant future. There was a meeting ofthe F40 group in Parliament, which is thecampaign group on this issue, where theMinister was able to hear the strength offeeling on this issue. He confirmed again atthe meeting that the Governmentremained committed to its Manifestopromise of fairer funding.Of course the big Parliamentary event

this month was the first ConservativeBudget since 1996, which was a historicmoment. It was an excellent budget whichdelivers security for working people – withour finances under control, the nationaldebt falling, our defences supported, productivity boosted, welfare controlled, income taxes cut and a National LivingWage. This Budget keeps us moving froma low wage, high tax, high welfareeconomy to a higher wage, lower tax andlower welfare country. This budget put security first. The

economic security of a country that liveswithin its means. The financial security oflower taxes and a new National LivingWage. The national security of a countrythat defends itself and its values.I was particularly pleased that the budget

committed us to meeting our NATOcommitment of spending two per cent ofGDP on defence, as this is something Ihave been calling for some time, especiallygiven the threats we face and the instabilitythat exists in the world.www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk

ALEXCHALK,MPFORCHELTENHAMFor many of us, education is pretty highup on the list of priorities. Our town’smotto, Salubritas et Eruditio, translatesas ‘health and education’ and our proudreputation for academic excellence is oneof the reasons why Cheltenham is suchan attractive place to live. But for the last twenty years or so,

Cheltenham’s dedicated local teachershave fought to maintain those highstandards in the face of a raw deal onschools funding. Gloucestershire is oneof the 37 lowest funded local authoritiesin the country. That makes a significantdifference. Children in the top tenhighest funded local authorities receiveon average around £6,300 per pupil, whereas those in the bottom ten receivearound £4,200.That discrepancy is simply not

justified in my view. Cheltenham’sschoolchildren should not be penalisedon the basis that they happen to livehere. I’ve been raising this issue inParliament at every opportunity. Asidefrom highlighting in my maiden speech,I referred specifically to this injustice in adebate in the House of Commonsearlier this month. The positive news isthat the Government appears to belistening. The Prime Minister hasconfirmed that the £390 million of extracash for underfunded educationauthorities will be incorporated ontobaseline funding for future years. That’sgood news, but we need to keep upthe fight.Over the coming weeks I will be

inviting Cheltonians to sign my petitioncalling for fairer school funding which Iwill then present in the main Chamberof the House of Commons.www.alexchalk.com

LAURENCEROBERTSON,MPFORTEWKESBURYThis year is going by like a flash. It doesn'tseem long since we were in the middle ofthe election campaign, and Parliament isnow rising for the recess, to be followedby the Party Conference season.Recess (which is not a holiday!), gives

MPs the chance to get round theconstituency and meet people more thanis possible during term time, whenParliament is actually sitting. This amounts

to valuable work because it is cruciallyimportant for MPs to hear the views andassess the interests of all theirconstituents. I will therefore be looking tocontinue to visit individuals, as well asbusinesses, charities and public sectororganisations in order to do this. The issues continue though, even if

Parliament will not be sitting again until7th September. One change I would liketo see introduced is for MPs to still beable to table Parliamentary Questions toMinisters during the recess, as we dowhen in session, as there is always a needto be able to put points forward andobtains responses from Ministers onvarious issues. I'll keep pressing for this tohappen.During recess, I will also be continuing

to promote British business abroad andthis will involve a couple of brief trips tofar-flung places of the world. Then there'sthe matter of a honeymoon - I wasmarried on Saturday 7th February and wasback at work in London on the Mondayand my wife, perhaps not unreasonably, has booked for us to go away togethertowards the end of August!Anyone wishing to contact me during

the recess can still do as normal, at theHouse of Commons, London SW1A0AA, or at 22 High Street, TewkesburyGL20 5AL. I do hope to bump into youduring the summer.www.laurencerobertsonmp.com

Q. Dear Robert,I’ve just had a letter throughfrom my bank telling me therates on my ISA are about to bereduced from September. I justassumed all ISA interest rates werethe same, but is there an alternative, higher interest rate ISA I canswitch to?Lucy, Stroud

Dear Lucy,Your question is one that is asked quiteregularly and in many ways is indicativeof our banking system. Not knowingyou circumstances it would be quitewrong of me to suggest which use of anISA is correct for you. ISA’s have to datebeen heavily promoted as a way ofreceiving a tax free return on your cashsavings by banks using what they refer toas a ‘teaser rate’ which usually lasts for ayear. Following that first period theyreduce the rate quite dramatically hopingthat you won’t remove your money anddo next year’s at the teaser rate, and soon. It is a method of getting the use ofyour money at a very low cost to thebank. Clearly they then lend that moneyto other people at a much higher rate.So what else can you do? Well you can

look around for a higher return on cash, but the difference between the highestand the lowest will be not a lot to makeup for the time it takes for your moneyto be moved from one institution toanother, unless you look at a small notwell known provider where they will paya small premium for the risk of themnot being well known. The alternative isto understand that ISA’s don’t have tojust invest in cash. They can invest in allof what are known as standard assets. These are investments that are readilyrealizable either with a large institutionor quoted on a recognizable stockexchange.Spend an hour with any decent

IFA who will assess your risk andpropensity for loss and will then makea recommendation as to what suitsyou best.

Q. Dear Robert,We’re a newly retired couple and ownour house worth around £350,000currently. We want to make sure weleave something for our threechildren, is there anything we shouldbe preparing for now, with regards toinheritance tax specifically?Andy & Debbie, Tewkesbury

Dear Andy and Debbie,Good news and congratulations onowning a home worth £350k, you don’tsay if you still have a mortgage but let’sassume that you have paid it off.The good news is that the present

IHT rules, again assuming that youqualify, enable people (let’s define ashusband and wife) to pass assets fromone to the other tax free, and not use upyour IHT allowance. Then upon ‘seconddeath’ (I always find that an oddstatement, I thought you could only dieonce) the allowance from both of you isadded together to be used in one go.This allowance is subject to change, usually in the chancellor’s budget. It ispresently £325k per person so in yourcase if everything is passed to yoursurviving spouse then £650k isavailable. The even better news is that plans

have been announced to increase thisfigure to £1m so if house pricescontinue to rise you are not sat thinkingthat the taxman will get it in the end. Iam looking forward to the fine print onthis one.

Q. Dear Robert,I’m self-employed and have astakeholder pension that I pay intosporadically. Is this pensioncompliant with Auto Enrolment? What details do I need to check?Greta, Chipping Norton

Dear Greta,A self-employed lady who has controlover her life. Auto enrolment will onlyaffect you if you employ people, but ifyou don’t life is all about you and yourloved ones.If you are employing people go onto

the HMRC website and type in autoenrolment, you will then see the relevantdate for you to have made yourarrangements for your staff. Make surethat you take qualified advice fromsomeone who works in this space all thetime, not just someone who says ‘I can dothat’. I am always reminded at this pointof the man who attends his doctor, whodiagnoses a need for an appendixoperation. The doctor doesn’t say hop upon the couch I will do that for you, herefers you to a specialist who does it allthe time.Carry on paying in as often as you can

and reduce your tax bill, saving is a gooddiscipline. When you have begun toaccumulate a reasonable sum you maywant to have a greater input as to wherethe funds are invested. Any goodpension’s specialist or whole of marketIFA will be able to look at this for you.You may have a wish to only invest inethical investments, for instance, there aresome first rate companies around that dojust that.

It will come as no great surprise to thosefollowing the success of Parlour FarmKitchens that the last few years havebeen a real test of strength and integrityfor the Cirencester based handmadekitchen company.Parlour Farmbegan creating stunning,

bespoke, handmade kitchens nearly 20years ago. Along the way they facedmany challenges, but nonemore sothan the shocking and untimely death ofits founder, Nick Grunfeld, back in 2011.For all their staff, including the teamof

10 local cabinetmakers, this timewas areal test of their resolve. Coe said: “Thesense of being ‘one big family’, who hadworked together for up to 10 years, reallyhelped the company through this verydifficult time.”It was late in 2014, whenNick’s wife,

Naomi, decided that it was finally time tomove on and sell the business. Coedescribes that time: “Nick was a goodfriend, so when he fell ill, my husband, vowed to help himwith the business.WhenNick sadly passed away, he

continued to help Naomi for some timebut ultimately however, she did not wantto stay, so we took it on.”Ninemonths later things are positively

growing, for what Coe describes as, “agood honest company, blessedwithsome incredibly talented cabinetmakers and designers.”Havingmade a significant investment

in their beautiful showroom, which hasbeen described by experts in the field asone of the best in the country, they haveintroduced a ‘choices room’, whichdisplays a range of variations andoptions for handles, work surfaces andcabinets, which customers can choosefrom. Coe enthused: “We have investedin new systems andmachinery, andhave welcomed back three cabinetmakers who served theirapprenticeships under Nickmanyyears ago.“Parlour Farm is still amust visit

delights Coe, is seeing the immensesatisfaction that customers have fortheir finished designs and the delight ontheir faces on completion. Shefurthered: “Only yesterday I was at acustomer’s house for the wholemorning enjoying their kitchenwiththem, taking pictures and chatting, theywere truly delightedwith what we hadcreated for them.”Sourcing new customers is obviously

There’s something special about aclambake during the summer months. VeryAmerican yes but in Britain with ourbeautiful beaches and delicious freshseafood, we can throw one just as well. Myfirst experience of a clambake was duringmy days at university, which just sohappened to be by the sea (and a healthydistance from home). We would pile thebeers, Pimms (we are British after all), anexciting assortment of shellfish, blankets, some good tunes and the necessary meansto make our own beach barbeque into carsand head for the golden sands of theCornish coastline.Whether you’re by the sea or not, the

smell of fresh seafood (either straight fromthe sea or your local fishmonger), is alwaysalluring and there’s no reason you can’tbring the taste of the sea to your backyardduring the warm summer months. Alfrescodining is a culinary trend we’re all indulgingin - glass of wine, Pimms, a beer, orwhatever your tipple may be in hand (makesure you do have one in hand, it is thesummer after all), we’ve all taken to ourgardens to soak up the summer sun. Whystay inside to dine? Nature can offer thehome comforts that are normally found inthe dining room. As the sun sets it creates alandscape of colour in the sky. Thecomforts of central heating are replaced by

its rays of warmth; and as for music, thesweet notes of harmony from the birds asthey sing their last songs of the day, sharesa natural resemblance to Tchaikovsky’s‘Bluebird Pas de Deux’. It’s all rathertranquil and romantic and mostimportantly of all, creates the perfect scenefor an idyllic summer dinner party. This dish symbolises for me alfresco

dining and is great for a summer dinnerparty. It’s simple to make (can be done inthe oven or on the barby), fresh and utterlydelicious with flavour combinations thatspark an Italian theme, so it only seemsright at this point to stick a bottle of PinotGrigio on ice to partner this! >>>

Serves 4 (generously)

Ingredients:1kg fresh clams600g mixed vine tomatoes2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced1 lemon, juiced300ml white wine40g butter, cut into small cubesExtra-virgin olive oilBunch of flat-leaf parsley, roughlychoppedSalt & PepperA loaf of fresh crusty bread

Method:• Preheat the oven to 200°C• Put the tomatoes and garlic into anovenproof dish, drizzle with olive oil andseason with salt and pepper.• Place in the oven for 15 minutes untilthe tomatoes soften and the skins areblistered.• In the meantime, clean the clams withcold water, discarding any beards that maystill be attached. Any clams that are open, gently tap them and if they don’timmediately close, throw them awayimmediately.• Remove the tomatoes from the ovenand dot the clams around them.• Sprinkle the butter around and pour the

wine and lemon juice over the clams.Gently toss all the ingredients, althoughbe careful not to disturb the tomatoestoo much.• Season with salt and pepper and returnto the oven for 10-14 minutes until nearlyall the clams have opened. Dispose of anyclams that have failed to.

• Sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serveinto bowls with a generous chunk ofwarm crusty bread and a glass of crispdry white wine.• For barbeque lovers

Cook’s note ~ you’ll be glad to know thisdish can be done ‘on the grill’. Simplyfollow the same instructions (the cookingtime shouldn’t differ much, however whencooking the clams, cook until the majorityof them have opened, which should be inthe same time frame as the oven). Use anoven/barbeque-proof dish and eithercover with foil or the lid of the barbequewhen cooking the clams.

I was intrigued by an invitation to stay atThe Convent for an escape. Being an ex-convent girl I felt a surge of naughtinesspulse through my veins at the irony of it.Perish the thought of our Head Mistress,Sister Anne’s reaction but there was more– not only a romantic night away in such asanctimonious place but there was to belive music in The Chapel – Sister Paulwould turn in her grave! Oh my goodness– the naughtiness of it all, I couldn’t wait.

The Convent is not just a heavenlysanctuary in the Cotswolds with four barsand a private members club, it offers a fullcalendar of live music, literary events andcomedy nights in the Chapel and DirtyHabit bar and we were to be entertainedby an extraordinary Irish singer, CaraDillon.

Following a morning of shopping ingorgeous villages en route, we headed toour boudoir in South Woodchester alongtiny, winding lanes as the mystiquemounted, with vineyards above and atowering castellated wall beside us.Through a stone entrance was theimposing 19th Century gothic conventwith towering pillars, arched mullions andbell tower with folksy rock music waftingfrom open leaded windows. We passed theintriguing piano graveyard and I felt likeAlice, as I pushed open the giant oak doorinto a long purple funnel leading to thewonderland of the reception with itsflagstone floor and shrine to BlessedVirgin Mary Mother Madonna. To theimmediate left, is a grand wood panelleddining room formally set for dinner anddisappearing into the distance, cloisterswith stripped sandstone and turquoiseblue walls leads to The Dirty Habit privatemembers bar.

Our tour of the hotel was full of moreexciting discoveries including therecording studio suite, the gallery and theChapel. The Chapel is centre stage as alive music venue. It spans 40m in heightwith an ornately decorated pointed archedceiling with intricate cornicing, exquisitestained glass windows and a finely carvedlimestone reredos to the altar with

elaborate friezes and finials making a mostdramatic backdrop.

Our suite was enormous, luxurious andchic and yet full of original features, with ahuge L-shaped sofa and high tech AppleTV. It had quite possibly the mostcomfortable super king size bed and themost fabulous bathroom with afreestanding tub overlooking the gardens.

We enjoyed exploring the grounds withenchanting grottos, intriguing monumentsand the kitchen garden brimming withsalads and herbs before relaxing on thelawn indulging in an afternoon teabanquet complete with homemade scones, clotted cream and the most delicious jams(my favourite being Tutti-Fruitie) fromaward-winning, Artisan Kitchen.

After pre-dinner drinks there were stillmore treats for us as we were notprepared for the palette wow of pre-eventsupper, compliments of Michelin-ratedchef Ryan Bennett. The Convent food is

some of the most delicious andflavoursome we have ever tasted. We wereushered to our romantic table for two inthe cloisters, where our small platesincluded a taste explosion of Duck hash, fried duck egg, duck crackling, saucesoubise and mains a huge whole grilledplaice, Jersey royals, samphire and pottedshrimps (£14). We sampled exquisite sidessuch as shaved fennel, radish andwatercress (£4) and for desserts, delightssuch as St Clement’s pot which was yetanother taste sensation.

We were then ushered to our seats inThe Chapel, which looked fabulous withsensational lighting creating an etherealatmosphere. A buzz of excitementerupted as one of the founders, Willwelcomed the audience – which includes aNetgig audience to gives legions ofadmirers from around the globe access tothe event. Cara Dillon (voice of an angelaccording to the Husband) appeared witha surge of excitement from the fans. Wewere then transported through a journeyof captivating Irish songs of lost love andemigration. Matt another of the foundersjoined us for a nightcap as we slumpedinto leather armchairs. “When I started Iknew I wanted something fun and big thatwould create a thriving community.Having toyed with the idea of becoming aringmaster, I decided that perhaps beingringmaster of a great big musical circuswas the way forward. The Convent is allabout theatre, from our wonderful acts toour extraordinary venue. This is not aconventional venue! That said, ourbusiness model is deadly serious and ourplans for Netgig – a live streamingplatform for live gigs – is taking us global– we can reach over 20 million viewersfrom here.”

After the best night’s sleep, the mostjaw-droppingly delicious and generousbreakfast and a read of the papers in thesunshine we left, longing to return!

M ost people are intrigued by theseemingly shadowy world ofbetting. Rather like those who

chisel away at conspiracy theories, somebody knows something they don’t.As a former Head of Broadcast atWilliam Hill, tapping the nose knowingly,I am expected to know.Come a little closer, sit comfortably, in

a whisper, let me begin ….When I first joined Hills I was

introduced to ‘Golden Spurs’, the nervecentre of the operation, the war roombunker where bets were observed fortwenty four hours, seven days a week. Itwas structured pyramid fashion wherethe worker bees at the bottom scrutinisedthe smaller bets, ascending to the biggerwiggery at the top, which dealt with thesubstantial bets struck. The day I was there the queen, king

actually, bee took a telephone call from amajor figure in the English PremierLeague. Said individual placed a £50,000win bet on one of the matches that nightin the Champions League, a £25,000double on Barcelona and Bayern Munichalso that evening and £30,000 each wayon a horse that he was involved in. Theprices on all selections remain unaltered.Minutes later the king bee took a

similar call from Gee Armytage, APMcCoy’s agent at the time. She wanted£50 each way on a horse running later inthe day. She was offered a price of 6/1which she took and the price wasimmediately slashed to 7/2.Bookmakers do not always win; indeed

annual company reports are oftendictated by recent Premiership results inparticular. Successive winning Saturdaysfor bankers like Chelsea and ManchesterCity, can result in huge losses. Ironicallybookmakers can be as vulnerable as thepunter, as instanced by a famous storyfrom the Seventies. An Irish former band manager and

trainee Jesuit priest-turned gambler, racehorse owner and philanthropistBarney Curley, entered a horse namedYellow Sam in a National Hunt race atthe small provincial track of

Bellewstown in Ireland. His reasons for targeting that particular

course were quite deliberate: at a timelong before the advent of mobile phonesand email, it was serviced by only onetelephone; a public call box. In order toensure his horse went off at generousodds, he had previously run it in a seriesof races in conditions that could best bedescribed as “unfavourable.”On race day, an army of Curley’s

runners were dispatched to a wide varietyof bookmakers with sums of moneyranging in size from £50 to £300 whichwere wagered on the horse in the 10minutes prior to the beginning of YellowSam’s race. As the money piled in, justover £15,000 in total, various bookiesbegan to panic and attempted to contacttheir representatives at Bellewstown toget them to bet on Yellow Sam. By doingso, his starting price would be slashedand their liabilities would be hugelyreduced. Unfortunately, their efforts atself-preservation were scuppered when it

became apparent that the telephone atBellewstown was, at the time, beinghogged by a particularly distraughtracegoer who was having one finalconversation with an aunt who was dyingin hospital. The grieving nephew in question was

Benny O’Hanlon, a friend of Curley’sand his dying aunt was a figment of hisimagination, unbeknownst to the bettingagents standing in the queue waiting touse the phone, he kept tied up untilYellow Sam had won his race by two-and-half lengths at the ridiculouslygenerous odds of 20-1.Curley’s profits on the race amounted

to £300,000, which adjusted to currentinflation rates amounts to about £1.4m.One piece of advice I will always give

is follow the money...

T hree months ago, Paul Bakerwas ready to walk away fromCheltenham Town after 18years as chairman.

A £500,000 loss of income afterrelegation from the Football League andthe prospect of having to lay off staffmembers and slash the playing budgetresulted in sleepless nights. The club appeared to be on a

downward spiral and Baker admits at thetime it felt like the end of the world butafter what he describes as a ‘staggering’summer break, the smile is very muchback on his face ahead of the 2015/16Vanarama National League campaign.Standing next to a whiteboard with the

running total of season tickets sold, it isclear Baker has renewed vigour andenthusiasm for the task in hand: trying toguide the club back into League Two atthe first attempt.“We are approaching 1,000 season

tickets and if you’d have told me we’d sellmore than last season after beingrelegated and two pretty miserable years,I’d have thought you were mad, butwe’ve done it,” he said proudly.“I have been staggered with the

support we’ve had in the community, with businesses and fans rallying round inour hour of need. It is very difficult tofind any negativity around the place atthe moment and I am really lookingforward to this season.”Baker has experienced far more highs

than lows since becoming chairman in1997, overseeing the rebuilding of threesides of Whaddon Road, threepromotions, an FA Trophy win atWembley and two play-off victories atthe Millennium Stadium. There have alsobeen cup-ties against Newcastle,Sunderland, Tottenham, Everton andWest Ham but there have also been darktimes. The club recorded a loss of £800,000

after their relegation from League One in2009 but they have always fought backand Baker is determined to do the sameagain after their latest setback.“As a business, we had to deal with a

situation whereby our income was

reduced by half a million pounds almostovernight,” he said. “Most would struggleto come to terms with that and we wereno different.“I must admit I wanted to hang up my

boots at the end of last season but Ididn’t think it was the right thing to dobecause you should bow out at the top,not the bottom.“There was an air of despondency

around the club last season and it wascrazy really, with managers coming andgoing and there were times I struggled towant to come to games and I don’t thinkanybody was enjoying it.“It was a low place to be and while we

did our best, it wasn’t good enough andwe were always fighting an uphill battle, trying to patch things up in a desperatesituation.“Then as a board we had to address

how to maintain a full-time football cluband look at all areas of expenditurewhich meant some staff moving on andothers having their hours heavilyreduced.“The last two years have been

harrowing but walking away when thingsaren’t working is not a greatcharacteristic. I am pleased I have stayedbecause I realised it was not all doom andgloom and I feel I’ve made a differencein the close season.”Working full-time hours in the office at

Whaddon Road, Baker has beeninfluential alongside new commercialexecutive and ex-Robins skipper JohnFinnigan and commercial consultantMark Cuzner in bringing in valuablerevenue to help kick-start the fightback.A three-year stadium sponsorship deal

with World of Smile has given Baker areal lift, along with the continued supportof stand sponsors Hazlewoods andThomson and Bancks, while MarchantsCoaches have renewed their ‘back ofshirt’ sponsorship. The main bar has been given a total

facelift, made possible by a £10,000investment from the 500 Club – afundraising prize draw run by volunteers.A new member has been added to theboard, in Cheltenham based solicitorDavid Bloxham and fan-elected directorClive Gowing, Chairman of the club’sSupporters Trust, has begun to make hisinfluence felt.“We are on course to better last

season’s commercial income, which againis staggering and John Finnigan has beenabsolutely first class,” Baker said. “MarkCuzner has been helping out in a purelyvoluntary role and while it is still achallenging economic climate, it’s allgoing well.”Even more crucially, team manager

Gary Johnson and his new-look teamhave given Baker the most cause foroptimism as the club competes at thislevel for the first time since 1998/1999.A vastly experienced boss with animpressive track record at Yeovil Townand Bristol City, along with a spell asmanager of the Latvian internationalside, Johnson has seen it all before.Unfazed by the task of helping

Cheltenham bounce straight back,Johnson has assembled an exciting groupwith young, technical talents such asGeorge McLennan and Billy Watersbacked up by experienced campaignerslike Danny Wright and Kyle Storer.Jack Munns and his former Tottenham

academy team mate Jack Barthramlodged with Baker for the pre-seasonperiod before moving into their ownaccommodation and the improvedatmosphere in the camp has been clearfor the Chairman to see.“I said to Munnsy ‘you’re back in

training again today, are you having anydays off?’ and he replied ‘no, we’re goingto win the league!’ and I thought that wasbrilliant,” Baker said.

“Credit to Gary and his brother Petewho is heavily involved in therecruitment of players because they havebuilt a really competitive squad over thesummer and it was a big job.

“We have put together a reasonablewage budget but we will not have one ofthe biggest in the division by any meansso we are up against it but we have a verygood Manager in place, who we were

fortunate to secure for two years whenmany League clubs would have gladlysigned him up.

“Russell Milton as Assistant Manager isexcellent and they are a really goodbunch of players, who we all hope knittogether quickly. There are certainly somecharacters in the squad and people likeAaron Downes and Harry Pell, whojoined us for a day at the Cricket

Festival, are fabulous guys.“While it’s early days of course, I know

these players are fully committed tohelping Cheltenham Town bounce backto the Football League straight away.

“Since relegation we’ve lookedforward, not backwards and I amgenuinely looking forward to the season. You only have to look at teams likeGrimsby, Wrexham and Lincoln, whowere established Football League clubslong before we were – they have droppeddown and survived, still providingentertainment for their communities.

“Bristol Rovers, who are admittedly abigger club than us, showed bouncingback immediately can be done lastseason, while Barnet have been promotedand they are definitely a smaller club.

“We have the realistic aim of reachingthe play-offs or maybe even automaticpromotion by winning the title. It isgoing to be tough of course but it wouldbe huge if we could do it.”

W ould you like to spend a dayclay pigeon shooting?’ - thiswas the ‘phone message I

picked up a month ago. My onlyprevious experience of Clay PigeonShooting was watching Peter Wilson, afarmer’s son from Devon, beating therest of the world to the Gold medal inthe 2012 Olympics. I had watched in aweas he obliterated 188 clays out of 200and I was left wondering how hardwould it would be to hit even one - tooright I’d like a go; always one to say yesto any opportunity that might lead to anew adventure, I was eager to snap upthe chance. Roll on the 2nd July andafter dropping children at school I droveup to Ian Coley’s Shooting School, nearAndoversford, 10 minutes out ofCheltenham. The discrete entrancedown a long wooded driveway opens upinto an impressive site; significantinvestment has created one of the finestpurpose-built clay shootingestablishments in the UK.A very warm welcome awaited me at

the reception of the shooting schoolfrom which I was guided gently past theentrance to the exceptionally wellstocked country clothing shop (I’vealways admired country chic) and on tothe group of lady guns gathered in acosy marquee complete with soft leathersofas, fresh coffee and delicious pastries. Our host for the day was Sue Tippett, again of farming stock and anenthusiastic ambassador of countrysports, who took up shooting at the ageof ten. An impressive lady who not onlyhas an extensive knowledge of all thingsshooting but who is a LANTRAqualified shotgun coach and is currentlyLadies Number 1 in Gloucestershire forfour shooting disciplines - go girl! Aftera friendly introduction to the lady gunswe were then briefed on gun safety;having never handled one before I wasinitially anxious - it’s a real responsibility

- but with Sue’s expert guidance I wassoon familiar with having the gunbroken and empty of cartridges whennot on the stand and being constantlyaware of all others around me; then Iwas guided to my date for the day, a 20gauge shotgun which would be gentleron recoil than the standard 12 gauge. Finally the least glamorous aspect, thedonning of the essential but rather lessthan sexy safety equipment; wrap aroundsafety glasses and squidgy ear protection.Once on the first stand I watched in

admiration as my fellow ladies took theirturn to nail their clays one by one. Thiswas one of those moments of my lifewhen I naively flirted with the notion, prior to letting off a single cartridge, thatthis might be the sport I was born tocompete in - I might have a latentnatural talent - even though I too haveread all the articles on needing 10,000hours to become an expert in anything. And so it was that after the first 10cartridges it was glaringly apparent that, like tennis and golf, shooting wasn’t aninnate gift of mine but this is where it allgot really interesting…Sue had been observing me like a

hawk, she had made an assessment ofmy preferred learning style and withfocussed clear instruction she had mehitting on target after clay number 15.She is an intuitive teacher with largerthan life character that puts one at easeinstantly. There was no shame in beingthe new girl and I felt only support andenthusiasm from my fellow guns; eachtime I hit the clay I was cheered andcongratulated, camaraderie was theessence of the day.Five stands followed with a varied

array of clays approaching fromdiffering directions, at different speedsand heights; it was exhilarating, physically and mentally challenging andenormously good fun. The time limit ofour morning session allowed us to utiliseonly a few of the 24 stands, each with atleast two traps, which comprise theexcellent facilities on offer, I would haveto wait for another time to experiencethe thrills of the high towers! The finale to the day was a superb

lunch, a fantastic BBQ of locallysourced meat paired with delicioussalads. Around the table the lady gunshad a chance to chat and what aninteresting and diverse group of ladiesthey were - professionals, small businessowners, mums at home – everyone wasengaging, enthusiastic andoverwhelmingly welcoming. I wouldrecommend a Ladies Day at Ian Coley’sto any of my friends; it is great value formoney with access to excellent facilitiesin a relaxed and supportive environmentwith no requirement for owning any ofthe kit. In fact I think I will gather agroup together for the next available day- I can’t think of a better opportunitythat has potential to lead to a host ofnew adventures - and don’t forget thecountry clothing shopping!

“A re we nearly there yet??”That was my little voice

from the back seat, after amere thirty minutes on the road….Every year my father drove us down to

St Mawes, in Cornwall for a week, alwaysover Easter. They may just be childhoodmemories but it never rained, the sunalways shone and my Easter eggs alwaysmelted on the back shelf of the packedcar. In the 70’s it used to take us over six

hours to drive down (yes I know it’s hardto believe I am that old). There was noA30, so we had to drive through varioustowns and if there was racing on atNewton Abbot it took even longer! Nowgetting on the M5 at Cheltenham, I can bepulling off at Bodmin in just over two anda half hours so don’t rule out a longweekend – its not that far!We always had to stop on Bodmin

Moor for a picnic and to see the ponies –the photos are hilarious. Red hot pants, quirky sun hat on and dolls lined up withteddies, sat on the picnic blanket and alltaken on the latest Polaroid Camera.Having lived on the Roseland for

sixteen years, I have to say I loved everyminute and the children had a wonderfulchildhood whilst of course, seeing the seawas never the novelty that it was for me.

As soon as we came down the hill headingtowards St Austell on the A38, it wasalways a game to see who could see thesea first but not for Emily and Lucinda. My first top tip if you are visiting

Cornwall this month, is to plan yourjourney so that you are not travellingdown on a Friday night after work – orSaturday morning (the usual change overtime for many holiday cottages). So ifyou do nothing else, PLEASE plan yourjourney early morning or late at night…to avoid the jams. I hate seeing people saton the A30 it really becomes a ‘car park’at peak times, which is not the best startto anyone’s holiday! Put the children intotheir pyjamas, take their duvet and pillows, avoid sugary drinks and sweets, keep themcalm, and encourage them to sleep … atleast that way you will avoid the obligatory‘are we nearly there yet.’Now don’t tell anyone but I am happy

to share a few secret places to visit thatare off the beaten track. Though thereare amazing beaches there are alsofantastic walks on the moors, beautifullakes and lots of activities for the wholefamily to enjoy…along with the familydog.www.visitcornwall.com is the perfect

place to plan your trip with all theinformation you need; places to stay,

events and festivals and ideas to inspirekids, parents and grandparents - therereally is something for everyone.

To my top ten things to do:1. Adrenaline Quarry2. Austells restaurant for supper3. Truro Cathedral4. The Scarlet Hotel5. Llanhydrock6. Dairyland7. Veryan pub walk8. Enjoy the Fal – River Link Ferries andtrips up the Fal to Truro9. Clay museum10. Eating tour of the Roseland to includeTresanton, Hidden Hut and theDriftwood

And as Malcolm Bell, CEO VisitCornwall says, “In the TV adaptation ofPoldark, Ross Poldark’s servant Juddkeeps saying, ‘tisn’t right, tisn’t fair, tisn’tproper’. I say tis right, tis the best placefor a proper holiday, tis a great place tomake life long memories – tis abouttime you came and enjoyed Cornwallwith us.”

It is of course a well understood conceptthat the glorious season that is theEnglish summer (alright I hear you say, periodically damp and disappointing),gives rise to the most important ofconsiderations – the family summerholiday. This particular holiday, which isof course, after Christmas, the mostimportant of breaks from the drudge ofdaily life, is to be carefully distinguishedfrom other important sojourns during thecourse of the year – the autumn halfterm trip to the Maldives for instance, orindeed the winter warmer trip to theCaribbean at the end of a busy shootingseason in early February. For this is thefamily holiday – and by tradition no effortis to be spared in pursuing its delightswith all the vigour one can muster.

Accordingly the tradition for many ofus blessed with our domesticarrangements located at the heart of thissceptered Isle in the Cotswolds, is toabandon the beautiful countryside thatinspired Vaughan Williams and Elgar, load the family together with necessaryaccoutrements into the trusty Rangey, andlurch at little further to the west ofEngland down to Salcombe, or indeed forthe true campaigner as far afield asCornwall.

This time honoured tactic of pursuinggreater exposure to the warm westerlywinds that periodically – it's fair to say –dump enormous amounts of rain uponus, is a way of showing our lovingfamilies how much we wish to share aconvivial experience with one another(apparently some of our fellowCotswolders even head across the borderto Wales – although this is a seriousmatter requiring some bravery) butwherever we go... West is Best!Who needs the Hamptonsand Nantucket when wehave Salcombe, Rock andthe beautiful Gower soclose?

Occasionally mydelightful off-springquery this last assertionbut I am always able tosettle their minds andsecure their hearts with thecomforting knowledge that halfof their friends and most of ours will befound holidaying in the same place, sothere is no chance of the dreaded ennuisetting in. Indeed the proximity of onesnearest and dearest as well as onesfavourite chums completely de-risks theentire experience!

Who would want tobe in St Tropez on ayacht, or pursuing aTitleist Pro V1 aroundthe Algarve when

crabbing in Kingsbridgeor beach combing at

Bantham offer such sublimealternatives? Seriously, even with

the agreeable collapse of the Euro andour Greek friends making ever-strongerovertures to us to come and enjoy amoussaka or two in Lesbos – there can beno more agreeable prospect than a weekon the English Riviera.

This year by happy coincidence, I haverecently learned from the Memsaab thatno less than fifty-eight of our ‘close’friends will be in Salcombe on holidaywith us. Which is an intoxicating prospect– in every sense of the word (intoxicatingthat is!). This eventuality is a new recordand I fear will be very tough to top. It is arare thing indeed to find oneself onholiday (without having to pay for them),with so many of one's chums.

As I write these jottings I am fizzingwith excitement of the prospect of asunny week in Salcombe, messing abouton boats and enjoying fishy delightswashed down with lashings ofburgundy...for even if one’s soul in a quietmoment hankers for a bit of la vieFrancaise, at least much of that feelingcan be tempered with an inexhaustiblesupply of the trusty Montrachet!

Happy Holidays to All!

T raveling relatively long distancesin any vehicle is something thatnot many people look forward to

and a week long holiday with two adults, four children and associated luggagewould usually involve a two carprocession. Not on this occasion. Beingput to the test is Vauxhall’s new shapeZafira Tourer, the model in questionbeing the tech line 2.0 CDTi 170psEcoflex. This vehicle can seat sevenpeople across its three rows of seats; thevery rear set folding away flat to allow fora good-sized boot space. For this journey, one seat was stowed away flat, enablingall six large pieces of luggage to bestowed away (just!). One point to note, ifall seven seats are required, don’t expectmuch room behind the rear seats, maybejust a few shopping bags. The trip from Cheltenham to NorthWales and back down to Devon wasextremely comfortable. The ZafiraTourer had plenty of room for us all. This was made easier by all five seats ofthe front two rows, being individuallyadjustable back and forth, maximisingstowage space depending on the size ofeach occupant. It was easy to find a gooddriving position and I liked the slightlyelevated position, which gave super allround visibility. Being very tall, I couldhave done with a deeper leg support tothe driver's seat but this is just me being atad fussy!

The 1.7 litre turbo diesel engine waseffortless and I was surprised by howquickly it picked up pace when fullyladen. It was stable at motorway speedsand had good road holding on the twisty, undulating country roads encounteredduring the holiday. The engine is a littlenoisy when revved but settles down at aconstant speed. There were no road maps required forthis holiday as the Zafira is fitted with agood sized Sat Nav with full colourscreen. What a simple pleasure it was touse. The display was very clear and the

commands were given in good time. Theanswer to the often asked question, ‘arewe nearly there yet?’ easily dispatchedwith utter precision! All the controlswere well positioned with the exceptionof the main electric window buttons, which were slightly behind the naturalfall of my right hand, makingadjustments a bit awkward. I was alsosurprised that there wasn’t a USBconnection for the second row ofseating, given that this vehicle is clearlyaimed at a family market. There is oneUSB connection in the centre consolebelow the air con controls. The Zafira Tourer passed the test withflying colours and at £23,890 for ourmodel this is no bargain basementpeople carrier. It looks good, drives welland offers great comfort for multipleoccupants.Whatever your lifestyle demands thereis a Vauxhall Zafira Tourer to fit it. From£21,760 each model has everythingyou’d expect from a premium car anddefinitely one to consider.

Iam not a Cotswold-y person bybirth. Having grown up in LondonI view every stretch of this regionwith delight. It could be that it is

summer but even when it is raining, I feelwe live in a beautiful part of the countryand I’m very lucky to be here.Last week I was in Tewksbury

experiencing another amazing reason whyI love living here. Locals and enthusiastsfrom all over the country, gathered forEurope’s biggest and best medievalfestival - which included a reenactment ofthe Battle of Tewkesbury that took placein 1471. It was wonderful and barmy atthe same time. Hundreds of peoplewalking around in costumes whichincluded monks habits mixed with a fewmedieval milk maids, whilst Hells Angelsbikers attempted to roar at 2 miles anhour though the high street. Anunbelievable mix of people, traditions, cultures, all celebrating being British withan element of eccentricity. It made mewant to drink cider for some reason. In the past couple of weeks I’ve also

visited the Brewin Dolphin CricketFestival in Cheltenham, Cotswold FarmPark, Minchinhampton, Cirencester, andGloucester town centres. However, I wasvisiting along with what seemed likemillions of other people! Cheltenham inparticular has been buzzing with touristsdrawn here not just because it is awonderful example of a spa town but itsfabulous festivals. The Jazz and Scienceevents in particular, are drawing aninternational crowd. I left Londonbecause I couldn’t bear the masses ofpeople and yet everywhere in theCotswolds it seems jam-packed at themoment - with tourists. On the one handit’s great to see this region as popular as itis, not just overseas tourists but Britishtourists too taking advantage of the superweather we have had and taking time tovisit. But, why can’t the crowds spreadthemselves throughout the year so itdoesn’t feel like a massive sale is on at thevery precise time you want to drive

anywhere - the roads are clogged up andevery parking spot has been taken.Talking about parking (again), I

smirked when I read what they’re doing inCirencester. The parking issue is beingaddressed by the launch of a ‘ProjectBoard’ led by ‘Cabinet Members’supported by the Mayor and councilorswho will ‘engage with key localstakeholders’. Seriously, read this next linecarefully:“Whilst we have no statutory obligation

to provide parking – and we are under noobligation to deliver additional parking aspart of the emerging Local Plan we,nevertheless, understand the importanceof ensuring that the parking needs ofbusinesses, workers, shoppers, touristsand residents are managed effectively, andwe believe that the project route is thebest way to tackle this issue.”This is Sir Humphrey at his best. There

are a lot of important sounding wordsstrung together and yet it says nothingmore than it is looking at the issue. Andwe all know nothing, practically willchange. I will not find it easier to visit andpark tomorrow or indeed next year. Andwhy do they have such inflated titles suchas ‘Cabinet Members’? This isCirencester, for goodness sake.Telling the public they are doing us a

favour by looking at the parking needs ofnow and the future is intended to makeus feel looked after and reassured. Butsurely addressing the needs of thecommunity now and in the future istheir job?I guarantee that a bunch of my mates

supping coffee (or vino depending ontime of day) could get the parking issuesorted in an hour! Stand on the street doa straw poll; that’s stakeholder researchdone for you. How difficult can it be?It might not be illegal but it is immoral

to park in family-allocated spaces. And Idon't mind you parking there. It is thoseuppity cows, which are just worried aboutparking their expensive cars in a normalspace with the rest of us plebs that Iobject to. Unbelievable!Interestingly, the press release issued by

the Council didn’t give deadlines for theProject to end. Neither did it give acommitment to implement whatever theconclusions of the Project recommend. Iexpect too much.

Y up, the eldest child is about tostart his secondary education. The debates, investigations,

careful research, random questions andsoul searching all happened severalmonths back. After dabbling ineverything from figures for privateschools (day and boarding), to attendingrepeated open days and headmaster chatsat both big comprehensives in smarttowns and small local schools with noonsite 6th forms… we eventually wentwith the closest school to our housewhere all his mates are going. It is a big decision this school; it’s staff

and pupils, facilities, ethos and approachto life will help to shape and mould ouryoung family for at least the next five year.We will probably have to make friendswith the other parents and go to schoolsocial events and our children couldpotentially meet their life partner herebefore they’re done!I therefore did an enormous amount

of research and carefully considered theadvantages (and disadvantages) of payingfor school in a country where aneducation is available for free. The pupil :teacher ratio appeals when one pays butthe potential, ‘keeping up with the Jones’’and never being able to go on holidayagain were drawbacks. The compromiseseemed obvious in the end – my sonchose his school. It’s just in the nextvillage, we already know loads of peoplethere and as it provides a good – and free– bus, he won’t be out of the houseduring the week much longer than he iscurrently, leaving us to still, possibly havea small iota of potential influence on ourchild’s attitudes and choices. We’ve done induction week… the staff

went to an enormous amount of effort tocreate a good first impression – it workedand the relief was huge. (I still couldn’thelp counting the number of parents withvisible tattoos, teenage boys with earringsand teenage girls with rolled up schoolskirts but I’m going to gloss over that inan effort to stop myself sounding like ajumped up Stepford wife). Will is in thesame class as his best mate, Harry and wealready know his tutor from previous

events and the uniform ordering processwas almost a joy.By far the biggest surprise though was

the cafeteria. I am staggered by the levelof catering on offer – admittedly, this ispretty much the first time I have spentany time in a school canteen for about 25years but the change is almostunfathomable. When I was at school, I was given

gruel. GRUEL, I tell you. And we onlyhad water. In tin cups. You know, likeOliver Twist?NOWADAYS, there is a MENU and

advertisements; with pictures of the 35different meal choices available. AND….there is staff! Uniformed waiters to makesure my 11 year old has everything heneeds with his Tuna Nicoise Salad andsugar free 7Up all for “two pounds eighty, but I’ll have three pounds fifty please as I

am going back with Harry and Jamesafter lessons to choose something fromthe ice-cream counter”.Clearly much has changed since I went

to big school, but I’m pleased to say thebasics remain the same: They might havea ‘House Twitter Account’ but they stillneed paper and pencils for lessons. Ifthey forget their homework it’s 15minutes detention, bullies are nottolerated and parents are encouraged tocontact the school at any time.I’ll be hovering over the phone come

September to pre-order my lunch for theoffice, does that count?!
