Due scuole verdi… la terzadi Elide Mussner

Con il 31 maggio 2014 si è conclusa la terza fase del progetto delle scuole verdi, a beneficio di 750 persone. Era il 2011, quando ci siamo impegnati per 5 anni con l’ONG ISP… in Africa, per migliorare la

situazione strutturale delle scuole in Karamoja.Perché? Perché più sono autosufficienti, più è alta la frequenza scolastica. I dati sulla popolazione qui, sono tosti: 900.000 persone, la prospettiva di vita alla nascita è di 40 anni, la causa di morte

principale è il “colpo di fucile”, la percentuale di alfabetizzazione è del 13%.ACQUA: nel corso del 2013 abbiamo lavorato alle scuole di Nadunget, Moroto Parents e KDA, nel distretto di Moroto per un budget totale di 36.278 euro. Come ogni anno, siamo partiti dall’acqua, nella scuola superiore di Moroto Parents abbiamo installato 2 impianti di raccolta dell’acqua piovana nuovi, per una capacità di

10.000 litri, costruendo 2 basamenti e posando 2 nuovi serbatoi, muniti di rubinetti e di canali di raccolta dell’acqua dai tetti dell’edificio. Essendo la scuola in un posto molto remoto, per sicurezza i serbatoi sono stati rivestiti di mattoni e poi intonacati. Nella scuola elementare di KDA e di Nadunget, reciproca-mente abbiamo riparato 3 impianti di raccolta dell’acqua piovana già esistenti, per una capacità di 30.000 litri l’uno. Il secondo passo è stato quello del test di pompaggio sul pozzo della scuola elementare di Kau-takou, per arrivare poi all’installazione di una pompa a mano della profondità di 100 metri. Le pompe a mano con una profondità simile purtroppo, molto spesso sono soggette a rotture, sarà il nostro obiettivo quindi, quello di raccogliere ulteriori 11.000 euro per riuscire a costruirne una ad energia solare. Infine, con il

budget rimanente, abbiamo riparato la pompa manuale già presente nella scuola elementare di Nawanatau. TERRA: dall’acqua alla terra; nelle tre scuole sono poi state costruite una cucina ciascuna, in muratura, il tetto in lamiera, le finestre a griglia e la porta di ferro e dotate di stufe a risparmio energetico. Con la rimanenza del budget per le cucine, sono stati acquistati 46 fornelli a risparmio energetico, di-stribuiti agli insegnanti di Nadunget e KDA e 13 fornelli per il corpo scolastico della Moroto Parents. FONDI: i fondi necessari raccolti per la realizzazione del progetto sono stati raccolti nel corso del

2013, e ammontano a 41.207 euro. Il surplus verrà utilizzato per il finanziamento della quarta fase del progetto “Scuole Verdi”, nel 2014.

All good things come in three’s:green schools in africa

On 31 May 2014 the third phase of the ‘green schools’ project came to an end, benefiting 750 people. We started collaborating with ISP, an NGO, back in 2011. Our collaboration lasted 5 years, during which we

improved the structural foundations of schools in Karamoja, Africa. Why have we done so? School attendance is directly linked to a school’s self-sufficiency. The numbers in this location are harrowing: 900,000 people, with an average life expectancy of 40; gunshot victims ac-

count for the majority of deaths in the country and literacy stagnates at 13%.WATER: in 2013 we worked in the schools of Nadunget, Moroto Parents and KDA in the Moroto district, with a total budget of €36,278. Water was our main concern, just like in previous years. In Moroto Parents hi-gh-school we installed two, new rainwater harvesting systems (10,000 litre capacity), building two bases and installing two new tanks with taps and pipes running from the roof to the tanks. As the school lies in a remote location, tanks were covered in bricks and successively plastered for additional security.

In the schools of KDS and Nadunget we repaired three rain water harvesting systems (30,000 litres each). The second step was to test the pump system at the Kautakou school well, followed by installing a 100 me-tre deep hand pump. However, hand pumps of a similar depth are often prone to breaking, so our next goal is to raise €11,000 to build a solar energy pump. The remaining funds were used to repair a hand pump in

the Nawanatau elementary school. EARTH: from water to earth. The aforementioned schools were given a new kitchen, a roof, window grills

and an iron door with energy-saving heaters. With the remaining kitchen funds we bought 46 energy-saving stoves for the Nadunget and KDA schools and 13 stoves for the Moroto Parents school.

FUNDS: funds necessary for the project’s completion were raised throughout 2013 and totalled €41,207. The surplus will be used to finance the fourth phase of ‘Green Schools’ in 2014.

Dal 2012 in Karamoja ristrutturiamo scuole, per renderle più autonome. Da allora per questo progetto ab-biamo raccolto 170.000 euro. Perché soltanto dove c’è cibo e acqua, ci sono anche bimbi che apprendono.

“Poveri bimbi, quanto li fanno studiare oggi!”. La scuola a volte ci sembra un attacco alla libertà dei no-stri figli, orari fissi, regole da rispettare, insegnanti severi. Ci piacerebbe vederli giocare senza re-strizioni, “lascia che vivano la loro infanzia!”. Sì, perché l’ovvietà fa male, rende le cose obsolete. Ep-pure il diritto allo studio è una delle più grandi conquiste dell’umanità; significa libertà, prospettiva, sicurezza. Dico sempre a mio figlio: “Vedrai che bello, quando saprai leggere e scrivere, nessun potrà più raccontarti niente, avrai il mondo nelle tue mani.” Troppo spesso dimentichiamo che i diritti sono delle conquiste. Per gran parte dei ragazzi su questo mondo il diritto allo studio non esiste. Ogni giorno c’è

chi rischia la vita per l’educazione, soprattutto se femmina. Tuttavia l’educazione rimane l’arma più effi-cace contro la violenza. Nei paesi più istruiti, la violenza è minore.

In Karamoja, nel distretto di Moroto, l’alfabetizzazione è al 13%. Dal 2011 è qui che rendiamo le scuole più efficienti energeticamente e attraverso orti, creiamo una fonte di cibo autonoma. Perché laggiù, se i figli si mandano a scuola, soltanto in cambio di un pasto. Quest’anno tocca alle scuole primarie Kautakou e Demonstration Farm, riabilitiamo i sistemi di raccolta dell’acqua piovana, costruiamo cucine a basso consu-mo di legna, facciamo corsi teorici e pratici sull’uso dell’ambiente, forniamo attrezzi agricoli e sementi.Il costo totale del progetto è di 34.493 euro. Vorremmo concluderlo entro il maggio 2015. Insieme a voi,

ne siamo certi, ci riusciremo.

“Those poor children! Do they ever stop studying?” School, at times, comes across as the enemy: it limits our children’s freedom, it has inflexible hours, rules to follow, strict teachers. All we want to see them do is play in absolute freedom, ‘let them be children!’. However, let’s not take things for granted. We’ve forgotten certain things. In fact, the right to study is one of the biggest achievements of mankind. Free-dom, the prospect of a future, safety. I always tell my son: “Just you wait until you learn how to read, write. Nobody will pull the wool over your eyes anymore, the world will be your oyster”. We often forget that our rights are conquests. Most kids on this planet do not have the right to study. People risk their life daily to fight for this right, especially girls. And yet, education remains the most effective weapon

against violence. In countries with a high level of education, violence is at its lowest.Take Karamoja, in the Moroto district, for example. Literacy is around 13%. We have been working here since 2011, making schools more energy efficient and food independent by tending a small vegetable

patch. Why? Because children are sent to school in exchange for a meal. This year it’s Kaloi and Kauta-kou’s turn. We have brought the rain water collection system back to life, we are building low wood con-sumption kitchens, we are giving practical and theoretical courses on the smart use of spaces and provi-

ding farming tools and seeds.The total cost of the project is €34,493. We would like to finish it by May 2015. Together we know we can.

Hennington e la sua squadra:un impegno contro il destino

Alla Ssezibwa Demonstration Farm abbiamo avviato l’attività, costruito un silo, costruito un pozzo, esteso il

condotto dell’acqua potabile…

Hennington assieme a qualche suo amico ne sono i fautori, è la Sezzibwa Demostration Farm nel distretto di Muko-no, non lontano da Kampala, la capitale Ugandese. La Costa Family Foundation sostiene questo progetto dal 2012. Sino ad ora le attività erano concentrate sull’insegnamento di tecniche agricole moderne, sulla distribuzione di

semi ed animali e sulla possibilità di accedere ad acqua pulita. Con l’aiuto della farm i contadini riescono ad aumentare in maniera quasi esponenziale i loro raccolti, tanto che è nata la necessità di creare uno stoccaggio della messe. Così è partito il progetto 11.1: la costruzione di un

silo con la capacità di 60 tonnellate di cibo. A settembre dello scorso anno, assieme ad alcuni volontari, sono stato a visitare la farm e abbiamo potuto verifica-re di persona come stando andando i lavori. Al nostro arrivo alla farm le mura del silo sono completate e si sta procedendo alla gettata del pavimento. Da lì a poco sarà installato il tetto e i tank per contenere il raccolto.Personalmente devo dare atto alla forza delle operazioni di Hennington e della sua squadra. Con alcune azioni ben

mirate riescono a migliorare la vita dei contadini e delle loro famiglie della comunità combattendo in questa manie-ra la vendita dei terreni alle grosse multinazionali ed evitando così l’esodo di queste famiglie verso la città.

Mi sento fortunato di aver avuto la possibilità di visitare la farm e la sua gente. Non farò passare molto tempo fino alla mia prossima visita.

Hennington, together with some friends, is the creator of the Sezzibwa Demostration Farm in the Mukono district not far from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Costa Family Foundation is supporting this project since 2012. Up to

now, the activities have focussed on teaching modern farming techniques, seed and animal distribution and the possibility of accessing clean water sources.

With the farm’s help, the farmers have managed to exponentially increase their yields, so much so that they have had to enquire about building a storage space for their harvest. This is how the new project started: building a silo with a storage capacity of 60 tons of food. Last September, together with some volunteers, I went to visit the farm and we personally saw how the works were going. On our arrival, the silo walls had been completed and

they were laying the floor. In a bit they will be installing the roof and the tanks to store the harvest.I must say that I recognise the strength of Hennington’s operations and of his team. With some well targeted action they have managed to improve the farmer’s life and that of families belonging to the community, at the same time fighting the practice of selling land to big multinationals and avoiding the exodus of families towards the city.

I feel blessed to have seen the farm and its people. I am sure not much time will go by before I return.

Vivere di meno, non significa non poter sperare

La Ssezibwa Demonstration Farm a Mukono, in Uganda, è una farm autosostenuta, dalla comunità per la comunità. Siamo al suo fianco sin dalla sua nascita: quest’anno costruiremo un mulino!

L’Uganda è al 151. posto nella classifica per la prospettiva di vita, alla nascita infatti è di 51 anni. L’Italia è al quarto. Chi vive in Uganda quindi, vive la metà di quanto viviamo noi. Di certo vivere meno non significa vivere peggio, ma ognuno di noi non dovrebbe avere almeno la possibilità di prendere in mano la propria vita?

Siamo convinti che bisogna creare basi, dare l’opportunità di autosostenersi, non vogliamo creare dipendenza, vo-gliamo che ci sia la possibilità di farcela. Sosteniamo la Ssezibwa Demonstration Farm sin dalla sua nascita,

nel 2012. Quest’anno, la costruzione di un mulino a mais è uno degli obiettivi che ci siamo posti, perché uno dei più grandi problemi è la possibilità di lavorare il raccolto, costringendo gli agricoltori a vendere il loro a

prezzi molto bassi. Costruendo il mulino alla farm riusciremo ad eliminare “middle-men”, che è la causa per l’au-mento dei costi, con un mulino proprio, alla farm avranno un’ulteriore possibilità di guadagno, lavorando il rac-colto e vendendo la farina; inoltre si potrà utilizzare il mulino per la macinazione dei gambi e dei rimasugli

della raccolta, così da farne mangime per gli animali. Una parte importantissima dei nostri progetti sono i training e la distribuzione di sementi. Molti membri della comunità non sanno né leggere né scrivere, si lavorerà quindi negli orti dimostrativi della farm, dove circa 150 famiglie verranno istruite alla coltivazione ed all’allevamento, ottenendo a conclusione dei corsi delle sementi

da utilizzare nei propri orti. Nomineremo e istruiremo un esperto di caffè, il quale a sua volta istruirà membri della comunità alla piantagione di caffè, così da creare un circolo di apprendimento. Faremo lo stesso per la vaniglia e il cacao, due piante fa-

cilmente coltivabili in piantagioni miste. Questo è l’inizio, è la base migliore per arrivare ad una buona fine, lo vediamo nella voglia di fare dei membri del-la farm; sono soprattutto loro che vogliono apprendere, cambiare, cambiare in meglio. Sperare in un futuro migliore!

Uganda is at the 151st position, on the ranking list for life expectancy at birth. Italy is fourth. Who lives in Uganda therefore, has half of our lifetime. Surely living less, doesn’t forcibly mean to live worse, but everyone

should have at least the possibility of taking his live in his own hands. We believe, that it is necessary to create a basis, to give the opportunity to self-sustainability, we do not want to offer addiction, we want there to be the possibility to make it. We endorse the Ssezibwa Demonstration Farm since its birth, in 2012. This year, the construction of a maize mill is one of the goals we have set. Be-cause one of the main problems, is the possibility to work out the harvest, forcing the farmers to sell its pro-ducts at very low prices. Building a mill at the farm, we mean to eliminate the “middle-men”, which actually is the cause of price raisings. With an own mill, the farm will have a further income option, producing and selling

its own flour. Moreover the mill can be used to grind harvest left-overs and produce food for their animals. A very important part of our projects are the trainings and seed distribution. Many community members cannot read and write, we will therefore work on the farm’s demonstration gardens, where 150 families will be taught to agri-cultural and animal farming. At the end of the classes, seeds which can be used on their own gardens, will be di-

stributed to the beneficiaries.We will have a coffee expert, who will teach the community members to coffee farming, in order to create a knowledge

cycle. The same will happen with vanilla and cocoa, two plants which are easily growing on mixed land. This is the beginning, the base for achieving a happy end. We can tell from the interest of the community, their will to learn and to achieve, their will to change, change into better. Their will to hope for a better future!

E poi ci sono io, che ho solo dato una semplice mano ad aiutare a costruire la nuova scuola ad Amakpape…

L’aiuto nel mondo, porta un nomedi Paolo Baraldi

Il sorriso che mi ha accolto appena ho toccato terra in Togo, il sorriso che mi ha accompagnato per due settimane, il sorriso che mi è rimasto nel cuore una volta tornato. La gioia di un popolo semplice,

povero, dignitoso. Voglio iniziare così il mio racconto dell’Africa, parlando del Togo, ma soprattutto delle persone che mi hanno portato a passare una fantastica esperienza in terra Africana. E proprio a proposito di missione, vorrei dire due parole sui tanti missionari che ho incontrato, che mi hanno

accolto, e che mi hanno aiutato a rendere meno traumatico l’incontro con un paese così diverso. Li vorrei ringraziare tanto per la loro testimonianza di vita, per il loro coraggio di rimanere con la gente, anche

in situazioni difficili, per la loro capacità di amare, per il modo in cui parlano di queste persone, come se fossero i loro figli, per il loro entusiasmo nonostante le malattie, le incomprensioni e a volte l’esperienza spiacevole di sentirsi usati.I volti di queste persone, portano un nome: Suor Patrizia, una suora tutto di un pezzo, forte e allo stesso tempo energica. Un manovale al servizio di Dio. Maristella, con la sua finezza ed eleganza, sempre pronta ad aiutare il prossimo, fino a portarsi allo sfinimento

fisico, pur di riuscire a compiere i suoi obbiettivi. Federica, forse la persona con la quale ho legato di più, la persona che bastava uno sguardo per capirci al volo. Si vedeva che era guidata dal signore… Bortolo, un Signore con la S maiuscola. Abbandona spesso e volentieri, la sua amata campagna Bresciana,

per unirsi ad aiutare i poveri dell’Africa, terra che ama e che rispetta profondamente. E poi ci sono io, che ho solo dato una semplice mano ad aiutare a costruire la nuova scuola ad Amakpape. Ricordo ancora la

fatica nel dover andare a raccogliere la sabbia al fiume, sotto un sole cocente ed un umidità massacrante.Ma la soddisfazione nel vedere tanti piccoli sorrisi al nostro ritorno alla missione non ha prezzo. Le mie giornate sono trascorse veloci e rapide come un fulmine, segnate da un duro lavoro, e spezzettate solo per andare a prendere qualche arnese che si necessitava in cantiere. Il momento che ricordo sempre volentieri, sono le domeniche. Tutti quanti ci ritrovavamo nella missione principale a

Lomè. La spiritualità, la faceva da padrone in quei momenti, le messe cantate, gridate, ballate, saranno sempre una cosa che mi porterò nel cuore.

The welcome smile, touching land in Togo, accompanied me over two weeks, that smile, which has remained in my heart once home. The joy of peoples living poorly but full of

dignity. I want to start like this, my story about Togo, but overall about those people, who have brought me to live a fantastic experience in Africa. And it’s right about

mission, that I would like to spend two words, about the many missionaries I have met, who have welcomed me, who have helped me to face the differences of a strange country

less traumatically. I would like to thank them all, for the testimonial of life they are, for their courage, for their ability to love, for their way to talk to those people, as if they would be talking to their own children. Their enthusiasm despite the diseases,

the incomprehension and sometimes the bad experiences of feeling used. The faces of those people, have a name: Suor Patrizia, a strong and energetic sister. A worker at God’s

service. Maristella, with her niceness and elegance, always ready to help her next, onto the physical breakdown. Federica, with whom I have bonded most, a look was enough to

understand each other immediately… Bortolo, a real gentleman. Here and then he leaves her partner in Brescia, in order to go help endorsing the poor in Africa, land which he

adores and profoundly respects. And then there is me, I who simply have helped building a school in Amakpape. I still remember the strain of having to go collect the sand in the river, under a hot sun and a disruptive humidity. But the satisfaction of seeing small

smiles at our return to the mission, has no price. My days there where passing quick like a storm, characterized by hard work, which was braked only by the need of going to

collect some tool for the building lot. The moment I always love to remember though, are the Sundays. All together we went back at the main mission house in Lomè. Spirituality was at the centre in those moments, the sung messes, nearly shouted and danced, are a

treasure which I will always carry in my heart.

All’inizio era pura ammirazione. Passava le giornate con la lente d’ingrandimento a osservare come su quel mondo costruivano, si affaccendavano, si amavano, morivano. Ben presto, però, i microscopici uomini iniziarono a odiarsi, a rompere alleanze, a combattere guerre insensate. Sprecavano, buttavano via. Via dove, poi? Ogni tanto usava la voce forte, faceva venire giù qualche frana, sradicava qualche foresta, gonfiava i fiumi fino a farli straripare. Tentava di scuoterli, quegli esseri

ridicoli e presuntuosi. Ma non bastò. Sul piccolo pianeta, gli uomini continuavano a volersi male, a lottare, a consumare risorse che non c’erano più. Venne il tempo

delle carestie. I ricchissimi scapparono sulla luna, gli altri morirono di fame e di stenti. E di battaglie continue. Era diventato un mondo assurdo. Stufa di tutto quell’ambaradan, si fece il segno della croce e poi, scelta una limpida notte

stellata, morì. E fu allora che quei piccoli, stupidi esseri, si accorsero che la loro Madre Terra li aveva abbandonati. Per sempre.

Il sole si spense, e venne giù anche la luna. Solo allora fu l’apocalisse.

At the beginning, it was pure admiration. She spent the days with a magnifying glass, observing how on that planet they were busy, loved each other, died. Soon, however,

the minuscule men started to hate each other, to break allegiances, to fight nonsensical wars. They wasted, they threw away. Where did all this waste go anyway? Sometimes she raised her voice, her rumble caused a mudslide or two, uprooted some forests, bloated some rivers until they overflowed. She tried to shake them, those ridiculous and presumptuous creatures. But that wasn’t enough. On the small planet,

men continued to hate each other, to fight, to consume resources which were not available. Then came famines. Rich people went to the moon, the others died of

hunger. And of continuous battles. It had become a bizarre world. She has grown fed up with all those comings and goings so, she made the sign of the cross and on a

Parlare della mamma è un lavoro da bambino, è un compito di scuola, uno di quelli facili, che si scrivono da soli, quando la mente e il cuore si aprono alla spontaneità. Parlare della mamma è una cosa da piccoli e puri, quando “dipendere” non è una debolezza ma una necessità, quando sentirsi amati senza limiti e senza riserve è una diritto naturale, quando essere tenuti per mano, essere aiutati nei compiti, essere rimproverati senza essere feriti, essere protetti e allo stesso tempo lasciati liberi di sbagliare...quando essere e sentirsi

figli è giusto, è normale perché siamo bambini, siamo ragazzi, abbiamo bisogno della mamma. Parlare della mamma non è una cosa da grandi, da adulti, da persone cresciute, perché parlare della mamma e commuoversi, e sentire ancora dentro lo stesso struggente affetto, e sentire che avremmo ancora bisogno di essere aiutati e tenuti per mano e protetti e gratuitamente amati...beh, non è cosa da adulti, non è cosa da uomini. Ed ecco che allora la

dipendenza diventa tenerezza, e ritrovarmi più forte di lei, più autonomo, più libero, mi commuove. La mia mamma che cammina tenendosi al mio braccio, che mi sussurra piccole richieste di aiuto, che dipende dal mio sostegno, dal mio affetto, dalle mie attenzioni è come un cerchio che si chiude, un dare e trovare un senso all’essere cresciuto e diventato grande grazie a lei. E le lacrime che mi bagnano il viso sono colme dello

stesso affetto che in ogni istante della mia vita ho provato per la mia mamma.

Speaking of your mum is a child’s task, it’s homework, one of those easy chores that almost speak for themselves, when heart and mind are open to spontaneity. Speaking of your mum is something for the young

and pure of heart, when ‘depending’ on someone is not a weakness but necessity, when feeling loved with no limitations and with no reserves is a natural right, when being held by hand, helped with one’s homework, being reprimanded without being hurt, being protected and at the same time allowing us to make errors….

When feeling and being children is just normal, normal because we are children, kids, and we need our mum. Speaking of our mum is not something which adults do, that grown-ups do, because speaking of your mum means being moved, and feeling a poignant feeling, and knowing that we still would like to be helped out and held by hand and protected and be loved with nothing asked in return…well, tough luck. Adults don’t do that, men

don’t do that. That’s when dependence becomes sweetness, and I become freer, more independent thanks to her. And that moves me. My mum walks linking her arm into mine, whispering into my ear with small chores

she needs help with, she depends on my support, on my love, on my attention and it’s like a closing circle, having become an adult thanks to her. And the tears running down my face are full of the same love that I

have felt in every instant of my life for my mother.

scolastico in Togo. Perché Suor Patrizia? Perché come donna ci ricorda tanto una mamma, la mamma di tutti, che con il suo immenso amore e il suo sorriso dolce regala ogni giorno una

speranza a questi bambini e d’altronde, Madre è l’altro nome di Dio sulle labbra e sui cuori di tutti i nostri figli.

It is a well-known fact in the La Perla Home that we are one big family. And, just like in any other family worth their salt,

even here at our Spa Centre we have tried to contribute as much as possible to the fund collection of the Costa Family Foundation. How, you ask? Why, with cuddles, of course!

Collaborators who want to receive a Spa pamper session will pay a special price, which will be donated to the Foundation. Thanks

to them, the funds collected this year are € 1791. We have decided to give the funds to Sister Patrizia who, for over 30

years, has been taking care of a Togo school project. Why Sister Patrizia? Because as a woman she reminds us of a mother,

everybody’s mother, who, with her immense love and her sweet smile gives hope to these children every day and, after all,

mother is the other name of God on the lips and in the hearts of all our children.

La prima madre che conosciamo è la terra, la Pachamama. Ed anche l’ultima. Da lei veniamo, a lei torniamo. Inesorabile è il cammino delle generazioni dal primo all’ultimo grembo. Per questo i cristiani chiamano il giorno della morte dei santi “dies natalis”, giorno della nascita al cielo. Pure la mamma che ci ha generati è una terra, fertile e generosa, oscura e inconoscibile ma anche calda e ospitale. Una terra che pian piano ti consente di operare giri sempre più larghi ma mai del tutto staccati da lei. È la terra che conferisce stabilità al tuo essere e al tuo volere, che ti offre il fondamento su cui costruire la tua casa personale. Certe mamme sono però sabbie mobili, paludi gelose che a nessun costo vogliono consegnare i propri figli al mondo.La mamma è però anche aria, l’aria che ti soffia sul volto per destarti dal sonno, l’aria che ti sfiora con una carezza, che ti canta una ninna nanna, che ti insegna le prime sillabe e parole, che ti volteggia intorno come un angelo, che ti avvolge con un profumo inconfondibile, che sa di buono, di vita, di speranza. A volte però è aria di temporale che con lampi e tuoni ti fa paura, ti rende insicuro, ti fa sentire piccolo, finché non sia passata la tempesta e cessato il brontolio e la furia degli elementi. La mamma è ancora acqua: l’acqua in cui hai nuotato per nove mesi e che poi ti ha spiaggiato sulla terraferma della vita. È l’acqua che ti ha lavato mille volte la faccia e il culetto, l’acqua che ha pianto per te nei tuoi e nei suoi momenti difficili, nella fatica, nell’incomprensione. È l’acqua-latte con cui ti ha nutrito nei primi mesi di vita. È anche l’acqua che ha lavato i tuoi vestiti e il vapore che li ha stirati. L’acqua con cui ti ha preparato i migliori piatti della sua cucina. L’acqua che ti ha annaffiato e fatto crescere come un fiore di cui va orgogliosa. È l’acqua che ha lavato via tanti tuoi errori e ti ha difeso agli occhi del mondo. È però anche l’acqua fredda della critica tagliente, l’acqua minacciosa dei ricatti sentimentali, l’acqua fredda della vendetta se l’hai contrariata. È l’acqua che ti ha fatto piangere perché non le andava la tua ragazza, la scuola che hai scelto, le tue amicizie. La mamma è infine fuoco. Il fuoco della passione con cui ti ha concepito insieme a tuo padre. Il fuoco del calore corporeo con cui ti ha portato in grembo e ti ha riscaldato dopo la tua nascita. È il fuoco della draghessa che ti ha difeso in mille circostanze della tua esistenza. È il fuoco che per te ha cucinato tante cose buone e che ti ha fatto maturare tante convinzioni e certezze. È il fuoco che ti ha temprato perché ti ha messo alla prova infinite volte per renderti forte e ben resistente. Ma è anche il fuoco che può incenerirti con un giudizio sprezzante, con una lamentela non giustificata, con un’accusa che ti vuol tenere a lei soggetto. Il segreto sta nella giusta miscelazione degli elementi, un’alchimia che dipende dalla natura, dalla volontà personale e da quella del buon Dio, che in Gesù ha voluto provare anche lui l’ebbrezza di avere una mamma.

The first mother we know is Earth, Pachamama. She is also the last one. She gives birth to us and so we return to her. All generations make the same journey, from cradle to grave. That’s why Christians call the day of the death of saints “dies natalis”, day of the sky’s birth. Even our own mother is a Mother Earth, kind and generous, dark and fathomless but also warm and welcoming. An earth that slowly lets you circle farther away from her, but never lets you out of her orbit’s sight. She is the earth which gives you balance to your being and will, she is the foundation on which you can build your home. Some mothers are like quicksand, envious swamps which do not want to deliver their children to the world. At any cost. Mother is also air, which softly blows on your face to wake you up, air which gently caresses you, singing you a lullaby, teaching you the first syllables and words, which pirouettes around you as an angel, which surrounds you with an unmistakeable perfume. Goodness, life and hope. Sometimes it wears the guise of a stormy wind, thundering and cracking with lightning and it’s scary, it makes you insecure, it makes you feel small until the storm and the grumble of the elements has passed. Mother is also water: water in which you have swum and which then left you on the dry land that is life. And water which has splashed on your face thousands of times and your bottom, water which cried for your and for her pain, in struggles and incomprehension. The same water-milk with which she fed you in the first months. The same water which washed your clothes and the steam which ironed them. The same water used to prepare the best dishes in your kitchen. Water which watered you and nurtured you like a flower she is so proud of. Water which washed away many of your errors and protected you from the eyes of the world. It is also the cold water of cutting critique, the menacing water of emotional blackmails, the cold water of vengeance if you have crossed her. And water which made you cry because she didn’t like your girlfriend, your school or your friends. Mother is also fire. The passionate fire of conception used to give birth to you with your father. The warmth of her body carrying you around before and after your birth. The fire of the dragon who defended you in countless occasions during your life. Fire used to cook delicious dishes and which tempered many of your beliefs and certainties. The fire which challenged you and made you strong and resilient. But it is also the fire that, in a flash, can burn you with its spurious judgement, with an unjustified complaint, with an accusation. The secret lies in obtaining the correct mix of the elements, an alchemy which depends on nature, personal will and on our good God who

wanted to have the experience of having a mother via Jesus.

Raccolta fondi 2013La raccolta fondi si è suddivisa in quattro attività principali: le donazioni libere (20.192 euro), la raccolta fondi dell’ Hotel La Perla (17.854 euro), il contributo annuale dei donatori benemeriti (1.120 euro), le presentazioni dei progetti (17.590 euro), la raccolta fondi generale (16.975 euro), in cui rientrano le varie attività a favore della fondazione (p.e. la raccolta fondi Boutique Monika, la raccolta fondi Hotel La Tambra, l’azione natalizia, il cinque

per mille); a queste si aggiungono le entrate varie, quali sponsorizzazioni, rimborsi (6.321 euro).La Costa Family Foundation nel corso del 2013 si è concentrata su un attività di comunicazione tramite la

Alexandra: la sua fantasia è alata. Da grande vorrebbe fare l’educatrice. Per ora segue il suo nipotino Ezra con anima e cuore, oltre a sostenere l’attività della fondazione con passione7Her phantasy has wings. As a grown-up, she wants to be an educator. For now, she follows her nephew Ezra with heart and soul, besides endorsing the foundation’s activity.
